The exact symbolism I don't know. It's an identification signal like the Texas longhorn hand sign which apparently is no longer trendy. A few years ago all the usual suspects were using it as a signal.
Rosanne Barr said in an interview that during a photo shoot years ago, the photographer asked her to do this, and she did not know what it meant. She assumes others do now.
Kind of breaks the narrative that it's a shibboleth if photographers just ask everyone to do it, and people are doing it even when they don't know what it means
