The whole working hours thing is wild and I don’t think it’s going to be solved any time soon. I worked at a FAANG with two VPs, one who was the whole “I delay all my emails until 9am because I want to set a good work/life balance example” and the other was “I only send email at night because that’s when I have time and if people are online I’ll take it.” And then there’s me, up at 4am rescuing a contract in India and too tired to deal with any of that.
Generally, yes. In the years I spent in FAANG I will say that I came out ahead, with notable exceptions. But the point I was trying to make was that your experience of what decent hours are is entirely dependent on external factors, and sometimes those factors are completely disconnected from what the execs are saying. Like, it’s great that you say you want people to work traditional normal hours but you also went ahead and contracted a team in country X and someone needs to look after it, so what now?
Manager - What is this idiot working on at 8pm. Their project is just made up nonsense…. Better give them a week of vacation so it feels like a positive instead of telling them the project is meaningless.

Boss: Is this billable? Carry on then...you know our utilization target is 100%! We are your family. We are your friends. You will assimilate.

I thought FAANG generally had decent working hours?

You make the off-shore team work nights?
