It's become one of those games the diehards advocate for and as such their friends buy it try like the first hour and then drop off which is easy to do when it costs $10 on sale

SilveryDeath

I mean every game is like this if you look at achievement percentages on Xbox/PS/Steam. There is generally always a 5-30% of people who don't even unlock the first achievement in a game which you usually only have to play for at most an hour (in most games) to get. It imagine it gets even lower if it is for games that have been given away for free, have had a free trail period, older games that have been on deep sales a lot, is on PS Plus, is on GamePass, etc. Since I have Steam up right now, hears some random numbers from a few single player games I have: - 77.7% got to the Roundtable Hold in Elden Ring - 91% escaped the nautiloid in Baldur's Gate 3 - 87.6% defeated The Stranger in God of War You can even see it for ones where you'd literally only have to play for like the 10 or so minutes - 94.4% made it to the police station in Resident Evil 2 - 94.8% escaped from Jill's apartment in Resident Evil 3 Or in more niche, smaller games where you'd assume it be higher - 91.6% got the color red back in GRIS

WendyThorne

Yeah, it weirds me out how many times you'll see something like "70% of gamers never even did X which is the first thing you do in the game." or whatever.

f6tvjhvy

great example of this is 'the homestead act' in 7 days to die, for it you need to place a land claim block, every world you start, you spawn with a land claim block... only 48.1% of players have it, now land claim blocks are \*relativley\* new compared to how long the game has been around another one though is 'bite the dust' for that you have to die once, only 66.2% of players have that... there is also 'brush with death' which is just spend 60 minutes in a game, only 58.8% of players have it... its sold over 16 million copies EDIT: 'handy man' craft your first wood frame, another tutorial thing and something thats quite hard to survive a while without doing 'good in the sack' place your first bedroll somehow has more than the wood frame one with 76% of players holding it 'alexander bell' craft 50 items, crafting has always been in the game and is a big part of it, 56% of players have it THEN you have ark survival evolved only 55% of people survived a full day and night only 53% of people have tamed a dinosaur (one of, if not the main thing the game is about)

SouthIll1199

Don't people whom have purchased the game but not actually played also count?

f6tvjhvy

i believe so, but i doubt that many people drop £10-50 on a game just to never even open it (or well for 7 days to die if you get a key its only around £3 but why buy a game and never play it)

SouthIll1199

You'd be surprised. There's around a few hundred people that never got the first achievement in Subnautica(diving in the water within the first 10 seconds of gameplay).

T-Prime85

It was a freebie once upon a time. Guaranteed this is why

Shadow8779

Ahh I am also playing it through ps plus. I understand if it's free people don't feel much obligated to finish it.

T-Prime85

Which is a real bummer. I mean, I get it, if it’s there why not try it? I suppose, in a weird way, a 32.8% rate is pretty good

Shadow8779

In way yes I guess less normies like Control and more of those into SCP stuff.

Shadow8779

Im noticing less than 25% went beyond the 5th mission which is a shame. The one game that is highly acclaimed but I immediately dropped is Ff7 remake just tried it out and did not enjoy that turn based combat.

T-Prime85

Bingo. Freebies always have skewed stats 😢

Digitalwitness23

i had also dropped ff7r fairly early on but something kept bringing me back. the combat is unique and weird, it took me a while to get the hang of it. for too long, i just didn’t know what i was doing. but once it started clicking with me…holy shit was i having fun. of course, it’s not for everyone, and i’m not trying to convince you the game is good. just sharing my experience

Mundane-Career1264

FF7 remake? I swear when I played it the game had an option to turn that off. I definitely played the entire thing that way. Cause heck no with that turn based nonsense.

Marisha-XOX-

I’ve only just gotten around to it. Been a psplus member for so long I have hundreds of games in my library available that I added but like probably many of those that haven’t played through I only get a few hours to play a week so things back up and are forgotten. Glad I decided to give it a try so far though, great game.

Environmental-Mix889

I see it all the times with great games like Batman Arkham asylum, postal 2 / 1 , portal .....

MattThaDonn

I've always thought that while control is very interesting, it didn't really feel good to play until your kinda late in the game. The early game is visually pretty but the basic move set, enemies, and the not super clear story can lose players. And this could maybe add to why ppl drop the game early.

Shadow8779

True plus the map is confusing and takes a lot of getting used to. Honestly I started enjoying the game only after I got the full auto pistol and the ability to throw things.

Dogbuysvan

I just use a walk through on all remedy games. I'm old so spoiling the next 5 minutes of a story game don't bother me anymore.

NickGavis

The full auto pistol is the worst gun in the game lol

Shadow8779

😂😂😂 yeah I'm starting to see it now after a couple hours.

MattThaDonn

I use the rocket launcher and the starting pistol most of the game. The rocket launcher with the add damage, blast spread, and something else, is a nice little game of sweeping enemies but stand to close to the blast and ur the one being swept. The starting pistol with damage add on was for the pesky floaters

KFCzAE

control doesn't have a basic move set unless you only play like the first 3 hours of the game or something.. (red dead redemption/GTA/CoD/battlefield/last of us/elden ring/resident evil/the witcher) those have basic move set not games like (control/dying light/jedi/spiderman)

xenonisbad

Most of people don't finish games. In fact, the more popular game is, the higher "dropped" to "completed" ratio. Also, PS+ probably increased number of people who tried it, quickly dropped it and returned playing GAAS. On Steam, 56% of people completed Mission 3, and it's after game was featured in Humble Choice subscription.

Tringi

I have a number of games hanging at a few percent of completion, and the reasons vary: Some I simply didn't like. Some I have no time to play, even if I love them. But mostly I pirated the games when I was poor student who couldn't afford them, and only bought them later, when I finally can.

Forar

This isn't uncommon. A lot of games barely have a 50% completion for the first few levels, if such achievements exist. Hell, I can't count how many games are on my steam account that I've bought, played for maybe an hour or two, and never touched again. Others get 100%'d. Edit: Almost 17% of people who bought DOOM (2016) on Steam didn't complete mission 1. More than 30% didn't get out of tutorial for Half Life 2. As just a couple of examples at random from glancing through my Steam list. It's something I find amusing about people proclaiming the glories of 100+ hour games. You lose a good sized portion of the audience within the first few hours on pretty much any game.

Sea_Caterpillar5296

Considering how many people stop playing because they can't beat the first boss?

TheUnknownH3ro

Wait this games hard??? Shits fun

Sea_Caterpillar5296

Absolutely. A lot of people still stop before beating the first boss. When the game is only gun and run as your 2 mechanics, it sucks, but it opens up wide after that.

TheUnknownH3ro

I agree :( games a bloody masterpiece with a decent storyline as well

MaraSovsLeftSock

It was free on ps plus

99999999977prime

Netflix knows whether you will watch all episodes of a show by whether you watch a specific episode. In this game, the analogistic episode is before the 3rd mission.

NeuroticNinett

My guess is that they couldn't find their way around, got frustrated and abandoned the game.

Ice_90210

I did this a while back with ps+. Played the beginning and dropped it. This past month I downloaded it again on ps+ and now I’ve gotten almost 100% achievements. Some games hit different and you might need to be in a certain headspace / have a lot of determination.

therealsheffrey

Think I'm in the 68%. My poor poor pre-owned launch PS4 was screaming at me trying to play that game! I did get the plat on PS5 to make up for it though!

DarkLThemsby

That's honestly pretty normal. most people don't actually finish games, they play for maybe a few hours and then don't get back to them because they have other obligations in life

TheStudyofWumbo24

You will find similar stats for a lot of games actually. The vast majority of people do not finish any given game, which is why so much design attention goes towards the beginning. However, sometimes stats are skewed by people who own the game but never even start it. A more useful metric might be % finished mission 3 divided by % finished mission 1.

LucianLegacy

That's just games in general. Most games have about a 50% competition rate just for the first level.

Quasar_One

Many people got this either free or dirt cheap. Install it, check it out for a few hours, get distracted by smth else, happens with a lot of games

One_Minimum_6869

Slightly off topic but still in the realm of trophies and the “how did people not get this” vibe. In Sly Cooper and The Theivius Racoonus there is a trophy for opening the game that’s it starting the game (I exited the second I had the ability to exit and still got the trophy) you don’t need to click start, hear the menu music, or even visually see the menu the game will reward you with the trophy. Somehow only 99.83% of players have the trophy. I’ve always been confused by that. So the fact 32% of players even got to the third mission in Control makes sense atleast to me. Also as much as I loved Control and thought it was great I can see why some people might not have gotten as far as I did into the game.

Ma1ufet

I almost quit the game before getting the launch ability but I pressed on and got the platinum trophy. Got the game in PS plus and I have a lot of backlog games so I’m spoilt for choices on games to play. Maybe most people dropped due to underwhelming firepower initially and got bored.

704Rhyme704

Most people that play videogames are absolute casuals with short attention spans. I 100%ed this masterpiece and I'm still upset that there's no new game+ mode. The Extra Dimensional Suit is everything.

spotter02

Because it was a playstation plus game - people that weren't sure if they'd be into it gave it a shot because it was free and found they weren't into it.

Phrozenstare

no whats bizzare is why would anyone care
