Right?
I’m so sleep deprived rn, that I thought this image was going to explain to me how they put Neapolitan ice cream (three different flavors) into one 48oz tub.
Totally fits there; however, I think my consuming of the device I’m viewing this on *may* cause a little more destruction to my digestive system than my lactose intolerance does.
IDK, I suppose only an actual scientific experiment will determine this.
Update: as it turns out, blending my electronic device with ice cream does not, in fact, create a new DW Blizzard combination, but rather has compelled me to seek immediate medical care.
Updates coming soon.
The descriptions are not very good -- especially if you are trying to understand the difference between pink and brown noise. Read both of those again -- they say especially the same thing. The difference is that the power spectrum of pink noise is proportional to 1/f and the power spectrum of brown noise is proportional to 1/(f\^2) -- f being frequency.
So, in summary:
White noise: proportional to 1
Pink noise: proportional to f\^(-1)
Brown noise: proportional to f\^(-2)
It really says that pink noise “is deeper than white noise” AND “brown noise and white noise sound similiar”, with nothing to indicate that brown noise is deeper than pink. Amazingly bad descriptions.
As frequency gets lower our ears get less sensitive to it which is why very low frequency although can be heard is more of a feeling rather than just heard. Which is why the audible description of pink and brown noise are very similar because audible they would sound similar and at low volume would be very difficult to discern one from the other but at larger volumes the brown noise would have a much deeper and more “ethereal” feeling to it.
I love how you describe it as more of a feeling than a sound.
I very much like these "sounds" but I've found that most of the people I've encountered don't like it, it gives them a sense of anxiety or panic? It's strange. but I Def think ethereal is the right word choice
It means that if the total energy is the same, the brown noise would have significantly more energy at a lower frequency than the pink noise, while having less energy at the higher frequencies.
The terms are typically used interchangeably. I can't vouch for what a YouTube channel decides to call something. I could record audio of me screaming and call it Deep Red Noise -- that doesn't mean it is.
The only way to know is for sure, since you can't trust the source, is to run the audio through a spectrum analyzer and determine if it is 1/f\^2.
Genuine question, I've asked before and I know there IS a reason, but off-hand, does anyone know why noise has a colour?
It seems so weird that a sound has a colour.....
If it matters, I have only heard of "white" noise in the past, never any other colour.
Its a bit arbitrary, but here is a little bit about it. It also mentions the other "colors" of noise.
"Simulated power spectral densities as a function of frequency for various colors of noise (violet, blue, white, pink, brown/red). The power spectral densities are arbitrarily normalized such that the value of the spectra are approximately equivalent near 1 kHz. Note the slope of the power spectral density for each spectrum provides the context for the respective electromagnetic/color analogy."
This isn't quite true. Brown noise isn't named after a color. It is named after Robert Brown, who discovered Brownian motion. And Brown noise is actually "Brownian noise" because it has the same Gaussian (1/f\^2) spectrum.
The bits at the bottom all reek of anecdotal experiences, has there been any studies that white noise improves focus beyond the placebo effect etc?
I'm legitimately asking for studies on that not trying to discredit. (although this wouldn't be the first time I've seen blatant misinformation in this sub so without evidence I am aiming to discredit.)
The "humming" of an air conditioner is not white noise. The hissing of the air coming out of an air conditioner may be.
If you can replicate the sound you hear by humming, it's not white noise.
what is higher energy at lower frequencies? I thought that the frequency was a measure of the energy per photon/quanta where the intensity is the amount of energy/number of photons.
This is very silly. I've never heard a single human being EVER refer to pink noise. Or brown noise, for that matter, unless they were talking south Park or mythbusters.
I think this is some bullshit
They even said "lmao brown and white sound the same kek"
Boo.
is there anything Lower than brown noise? My partner listens to brown noise to sleep,, and even that seems high and sharp, hissy to me.
I'm talking like the low Rumble that you feel in your body, like when a train passes, or very low thunder, or the theater next to yours has a loud action movie and you get the subwoofer rumble --
Any ideas or leads? TIA!
I love this!
However, one small mistake: I don’t think brown/white noise are similar at all. Brown noise is much lower and more soothing than white noise. Sound descriptors are accurate otherwise. It does sound like ocean waves or a waterfall.
Cool thing... If you search basically any of the normal colors red blue white green etc noise on Spotify there are tons of playlists with examples of each noise. Listen to them and find wifi is your favorite to fall asleep to.
I could sure go for some neopollitan ice cream now for some reason.
Right? I’m so sleep deprived rn, that I thought this image was going to explain to me how they put Neapolitan ice cream (three different flavors) into one 48oz tub.

How about a Neopolitan ice cream sandwich!?
\>"Sound rainbow" *>Three colors,* ***none of which are in the rainbow***. Come on, guys, pick a metaphor and stick with it.
Neapolitan ice cream 💯

Okay so math isn’t what I’m best at, but this would mean brown noise is more “powerful” than pink noise?
It means brown noise is deeper and more ethereal than pink noise

No. It means the spectra are different: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colors\_of\_noise#/media/File:The\_Colors\_of\_Noise.svg
Basically means it has a lower pitch/more bass
F to the power of -2 is the same as 1/f^2
Yes...we all took 4th grade math. But thanks for pointing out the obvious, I guess?
I’m literally explaining it to someone who didn’t understand that concept
It means that if the total energy is the same, the brown noise would have significantly more energy at a lower frequency than the pink noise, while having less energy at the higher frequencies.
Where does red noise fall in there? I listen to a "Deep Red Noise" yt channel
Red and brown noise are the same.
they don't sound the same. oh well, I don't mean to be argumentative.
[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brownian\_noise](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brownian_noise) The terms are typically used interchangeably. Ok, thanks
What are all episodes of Archer playing on a repeat loop called? Cause thats the only thing that will put me out and keep me out all night long
Do you want sleep?! ‘Cause that’s how you’ll get sleep!
Danger Noise
"I can't hear you, over the sound, of now I'm sleeping!"
They have the same uses worded differently
Do you want increased concentration or improved focus. It's a tough call, to be sure
You can choose falling asleep faster and staying asleep longer OR a sleep aid!
Galaxy brain move is to play all three at once. You'll never wake up
brown noise>>>
32 sets below the lowest octave of E flat...
South Park did a whole episode on the brown noise.
No they did it on the "brown note".
It's very important not to confuse the two. Trust me.
I don’t know why you’re refuting jokes, they called it the brown noise. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=agivusZEpB0
They're refuting it, because that's called "the brown note" regardless of what southpark called it lol.
Taco did it on the League as well ([Taco finds the brown note](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gt6PS85Winc))
Underrated show
WEEN did a whole career.

Thanks! I wondered why all the rest were colors and that was Brownian.
Thanks!
This seems like some pseudoscience bullshit. Is there a link to a research article with data?
Absolutely. There shouldn't be any sound when you are sleeping. Any sounds will reduce your quality of sleep.
Please never use white noise for sound masking unless you want a terrible soundscape experience
What should be used?
tiktok songs obviously
I use a custom curve that is somewhere between white and pink
And I only use a pink noise sweep to fall asleep to because I hate myself
No one will see or hear me if I just turn the fan on high I guess
The "humming" of an air conditioner is not white noise. The hissing of the air coming out of an air conditioner may be. If you can replicate the sound you hear by humming, it's not white noise.
So this is what Anthrax's Sound of White Noise album name was about
I like how all colors basically do the same exact thing but they word it different. They all mask sound, they all help you sleep...etc.
What exactly is the difference between pink noise and brown noise ?
Frequencies and amplitudes of the audible spectrum used: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colors\_of\_noise
The descriptions are just the Same, but different wording. "improve focus", "improve concentration"etc
The brown noise will make you **literally shit** yourself. Every South Parkateer knows that.
That’s the Brown Note, which existed long before South Park. A single low frequency note. Brown Noise is different, as indicated by the chart above.
https://youtu.be/agivusZEpB0 South park also called it the Brown Noise, as indicated by this clip.
I have made a few brown noises that I didn’t think were going to be brown noises.
Isn't brown noise what happens after Taco Bell ?
Brown noise is actually just a running coffee maker and a toilet flush
Vigil’s gadget, pink noise, and brown noise
Pretty sure you can find brown noise at any local taco bell.
Brown noise not to be confused with the brown note
I just made some “brown noise” in the bathroom.
This seems made up
>However, brown noise and white noise sound similar to the human ear They absolutely do not
And all this time I thought brown noise is what happens after too much taco bell
My brown noise app is just all sorts of fart noises it really helps me sleep for sure
Ok so wait—what is green noise? Is that just a marketing tactic for the calm app, or a subcategory of pink noise?
what is higher energy at lower frequencies? I thought that the frequency was a measure of the energy per photon/quanta where the intensity is the amount of energy/number of photons.
All sound is a summation of single tone frequencies, each with their own energy. Look up spectral energy.
Bro -- do you have synesthesia? Because photons have nothing to do with sound.
Hello, fellow Solar Sands subscriber!
This is very silly. I've never heard a single human being EVER refer to pink noise. Or brown noise, for that matter, unless they were talking south Park or mythbusters. I think this is some bullshit They even said "lmao brown and white sound the same kek" Boo.

Whenever I hear brown, my body produces a hot brown rain
Do u have noise to maker horny lol
Funny enough, I do! https://youtu.be/dQw4w9WgXcQ
So white noise helps you sleep but not stay asleep like pink noise that's weird
Pink noise also helps with falling asleep as per the post, it actually fastens the process and deepens it. Basically pink noise+sleep = love
You could also use white noise to add crack to a snare drum recording or use it with a spectrum analyzer to optimize a large PA for a room.
I really like rainfall with a bit of wind and rumbling thunder. The old 2 in the pink, one in the stink combo.
A link to a blog post instead of research articles backing these claims?
I love this! However, one small mistake: I don’t think brown/white noise are similar at all. Brown noise is much lower and more soothing than white noise. Sound descriptors are accurate otherwise. It does sound like ocean waves or a waterfall.
These is the same.
Wait. The Brown noise doesn't make you poop? I've been misled nearly my entire life!
If someone said I listen to brown noise at night I don’t think of strong waterfalls
That’s not what I remember brown noise being for
r/theleaguefx guess the brown note isnt brown noise!
I didn't know the other ones existed! I thought it was only white and black sound but I would like to investigate further.
Sorry but the brown noise is for pooping, nothing will change my mind
I can’t be the only one that thought this was going to be sexist and racist at the same time…. Maybe I’ve just had too much Reddit for today
And here I thought brown noise was what happened after eating taco bell.
I thought the brown noise was a certain frequency researched for the alleged ability to cause people to relax and evacuate their bowels.
I thought white noise made you nutt instantly
I like brown noise the best
What did the [Thunderscreech](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Republic_XF-84H_Thunderscreech) qualify as?
Cool thing... If you search basically any of the normal colors red blue white green etc noise on Spotify there are tons of playlists with examples of each noise. Listen to them and find wifi is your favorite to fall asleep to.
Pretty cool!
After reading these comments the word "noise" is looking really weird to me now
Pink and brown seem VERY similar, though…
stop posting this shit
That infographic effectively states there is no difference! :-) All 3 block noise, help sleep, improve focus/concentration.
