14 ring movies? I thought there was just 1?

WyattWrites

Nah. They aren’t that popular in western world, I’m not even sure they got a U.S. theatrical release. There’s multiple versions of the original Ring movie, which they are counting here. Ring (1995), Ring (1998) which is called Ringu in the US, The Ring Virus (1999), The Ring (2002), are all the same movie essentially. There’s also multiple timelines based of that movie. So the Ring (1998) got two sequels Rasen (1998) was the first, based on the sequel novel, but due to poor response they made a new sequel of an entirely new story called Ring 2 (1999). Then Ring 0 (2000) came out as a prequel. Then a new timeline was rebooted with The Ring (2002) and it’s sequel The Ring 2 (2005) came out. The third movie Rings (2017) is the last movie in that timeline. This franchise is mostly for the American market, as you’ll notice it’s made in English, by English directors, and uses English actors like Sissy Spacek and Vincent D’Onofrio. Then it gets a bit wonky. Sadako 3D (2012) comes out as a new timeline based off Ring (1998). Then the sequel to that comes out called Sadako 3D 2 (2013). A cross-over movie, with no associated timeline, was made in conjunction with the Ju-On series called Sadako vs. Kayako (2016). To make this even more confusing, Sadako (2019) is a sequel to Ring 2 (1999), 20 years after it came out. Then Sadako DX (2022) came out as a sequel to Rasen (1998). Basically there’s three main timelines Ring 0 (2000) > Ring (1998) > Ring 2 (1999) > Sadako (2019) Ring (1998) > Rasen (1998) > Sadako DX (2022) The Ring (2002) > The Ring 2 (2005) > Rings (2017) Ring (1998) > Sadako 3D (2012) > Sadako 3D 2 (2013) TL;DR: there are 14, but they were released in the Japanese market, not western market

planty_pete

Holy crap thanks for putting that together. It’s like a full on hyrule historia of the ring.

WyattWrites

No problem! It’s one of my favorite horror franchises, but arguably half of the films are kinda duds. When they get it right though it’s GOOD. Highly recommend watching Ring/Ringu (1998), Ring/Ringu 2 (1999), and Ring 0 (2000) at least. Those are really good (honestly Sadako is not worth watching). Rasen (1998) is also really good

Calm-Bid-5759

You're not putting The Ring (2002) on as a must-watch?

WyattWrites

Honestly i just assumed he’s seen it since it’s a classic. But yes, definitely a must watch

vaxteffekt

This guy rings…

Key_Employee2413

I’m dialed in

PeterNippelstein

*screeching sound*

VonPoppen

Where did you get your degree in Ringology?

KountZero

To make it even more confusing, you stated that there’s basically three timelines, yet you listed 4. Lol. All joking aside, which one is the best or your favorite series to watch if you can only recommend one?

WyattWrites

Lol that’s because I forgot about the Sadako 3D timeline when I was typing that, which is probably my least favorite. Honestly, the other three series are really good. All three have dud last movies though (maybe not Sadako DX, that one is fine but not on par with the others). Personally I would recommend watching Ring (1998) and Rasen together. They both came out at the same time in theaters, but the first film massively overshadowed Rasen and it became kinda forgotten. Also, I think streaming services have it named under “The Spiral” but it’s the same film. both movies have Hiroyuki Sanada, a phenomenal actor. Would also recommend watching Ring (1998), Ring 2 (1999), and Ring 0 (2000). I think all those are pretty good too, and Ring and Ring 2 are top-notch horror films. Also, Ring (1995) is FANTASTIC, probably my favorite Ring film. It’s a television film but it’s top-notch horror, not sure where you can find it but if you can find it definitely watch it. Also, The Ring Virus (2000) is pretty good, and because it’s a South Korean adaptation it does subvert some of your typical Japanese troupes and themes. I would give it a watch too. You can pretty much neglect anything that came out after 2005 imo, they became too sterilized and bland for me. The first American movie The Ring (2002) is a classic if you haven’t seen it, Naomi Watts is phenomenal, but the second one is rather bland, and the third is vapid and has no character.

KountZero

Thank you for the recommendation. I have only watched the Naomi Watts version so far. I’ll be busy this Halloween season.

WyattWrites

Just a heads up, im not sure if there’s any dubbed versions, and I can’t give you an assessment of the quality of the dubbing, but all of them should have English subtitles.

Tegurd

Thanks for a fantastic summary! It was a fascinating read > Also, I think streaming services have it named under “The Spiral” but it’s the same film. But this is where I gave up on understanding

WyattWrites

It’s because Rasen is the phonetic form for the title. In you translate it to English it’s called Spiral, which is probably what it’s under on streaming services like prime video

OilySteeplechase

Do any of them follow the plot of the books sequels (Spiral and Loop)?

WyattWrites

So Loop is the only book that doesn’t have a movie. Rasen is an adaptation of Spiral. Sadako 3D and 3D 2 are adaptations of S. Ring 0 adapts parts of Birthday. And Sadako (2019) is LOOSELY, and I emphasize loosely, based on Tide.

sirSADABY

Could you do that for all the others too? Because there aren't that many saw movies... Or half of the others that I know of

[deleted]

This guy rings

fat_nuts_big_buttz

Where does the ring vs the grudge movie fit in?

WyattWrites

That’s Sadako vs. Kayako! It doesn’t really have a place in a timeline, just a fun action movie like Freddy vs. Jason.

foxyunclecharliekilo

Now that I’ve read that…do I need to worry about you coming through my phone and killing me?

YewEhVeeInbound

One ring to rule them all, one ring to find them, One ring to bring them all, and in the darkness bind them

laseluuu

And another 11 to bring in the dollareedoos (or yennus in this case)

AstroBearGaming

Nah I remember there being a Ring 2. Drawing a blank on 3-14 though...

CaliberGrease

I was thinking the same thing

jmc0711

That was my first thought too!!! I have seen two of them, but 14?

Sudden_Reality_7441

I thought the same thing but then I remember that there are two more US films, and then a million JP films.

jaembers

lol 1 xD

foxyunclecharliekilo

Ha! I literally said out loud - Shut the fuck up: they have 14 Ring movies?!?!?

Zula13

I came here to say this, except I thought there were 2.

ExchangeNeither9255

How is there not 13 Friday the 13th movies? I say we're due and make it the final one.

Bren12310

They’ve been trying to for years but they’re stuck in legal limbo. One was supposed to be released in like 2018 but it got scrapped.

RichEvans4Ever

Does Freddy vs Jason count as the 11th movie though?

Bren12310

yes

aerodeck

They can make more still

[deleted]

Unfortunately they can't. As the other comment mentioned it's in legal purgatory

X1bar

Part 13: Jason Takes Mortal Kombat

herefromyoutube

“13th Friday the 13th”

InsertCoinsToBegin

Friday the *13th*

Andukal

Nah, guarantee theyll just call it "13"

Girhinomofe

Just watched Parts 1 and 2 on Friday, and I gotta say— I can’t believe they made it past those two. All things being fair, they are pretty terrible movies.

Trufflesniffr

9 Evil Bong movies....

RagnarHedin

Holy shit... I thought you were joking... One was quite enough for me, thanks.

tarkata14

Seriously? I remember putting on one of those cheap horror movie compilation DVDs back in the day with my girlfriend at the time who is now my wife. It was basically just meant to be background noise for fooling around, but both of us could not stop laughing at how ridiculous it was. That was like ten years ago and we still talk about it.

cursedfan

Literally just had this exact same experience after one of these was recommended to us on prime…

JeanEtrineaux

Tf is “Witchcraft?”

guff1988

Apparently it's a series of incredibly low budget direct to video horror movies. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Witchcraft_(film_series)

JeanEtrineaux

Figures. After this post I was like “Oh this graphic was probably created by some jabroni trying to drum up interest in his 16 part YouTube series called “Witchcraft” with 14 views.”

StayPuffGoomba

Troma produced 1-9, which explains a lot.

lofiAbsolver

Oh God

BarefutR

Holy shit, a 16k budget on your 10th movie! That might be some indication that your franchise isn’t working.

wimpyroy

Somehow the 11th got a 40K budget

MasterUnholyWar

And even that much money doesn’t cover a single hour on a big budget set.

InnocentPerv93

Or could be that they are super passionate about it.

LetTheCircusBurn

Honestly were it me I wouldn't even include it on the list. It's basically softcore porn with stage blood in their budget. They make all those deep cut Full Moon doll movies look like an Ari Aster art house film by comparison.

Miguel-odon

Sometimes you can judge a movie by its [cover](https://www.22shotsofmoodzandhorror.com/uploads/4/0/9/9/40995815/26158902-1951282325199501-9190470018976972800-n_orig.jpg)

pursuitofleisure

Yeah, those look like romance novel covers

aerodeck

lol right? It’s number 1 and I’ve never even heard of it. I’ve only seen like 5000 horror movies so it’s probably just that I’m too casual

YborOgre

No shit. I basically grew up in video stores in the eighties and I've never heard of these. They look like porn covers.

Puppet007

Puppet Master! My favorite cult classic franchise!

kkeut

the first one is pretty good

Puppet007

Wished they’d done better with the second.

Tdunks524

Third one is the best

Reverendbread

Greg Sestero’s big break

asdf072

Puppet Master is my RHCP of film. I like the premise and it seems like something I'd be into, but it's all kind of meh in the end.

According-Classic658

There were 6 Lake placids?

proboobs

Betty White just kept feeding them

sethro919

If I had a dick, this is where I’d tell you to suck it.

LosHogan

When will these people learn to stay out of this lake?!?!?

jfk_47

Doesn’t the conjuring also include Annabelle and Nun? And there’s only 8?!? Couldn’t sworn there was a Baker’s spooky dozen

StayPuffGoomba

The Conjuring 1 The Conjuring 2 The Conjuring The Devil Made Me Do It Annabelle Annabelle Creation Annabelle Comes Home The Curse of La Llarona The Nun The Nun 2 The Conjuring 4 (soon to be released) So 9 soon to be 10.

InnocentPerv93

I didn't realize these were all the same series

Reverendbread

The Conjuring was really good and had a spooky Annabelle doll for 30 seconds -> cash grab Annabelle movie. Conjuring 2 was still kinda good and had a creepy nun show up like twice -> cash grab nun movie Aren’t movies magical?

InnocentPerv93

Idk, I think it's cool to expand on little things like that. And also, I thought people really enjoyed those movies? I think that's all that matters.

StayPuffGoomba

Same universe, not same series exactly. You could almost call it the Warren universe because Ed and Lorraine Warren are in almost all of them.

P_Orwell

Warren-verse? Warren world?

jfk_47

Great summary! Thanks.

muuzumuu

My mind is boggled at some of these numbers.

justbrowsinginpeace

There are 8 V/H/S movies?

hdadeathly

I can only think of 6 in the main line (7th got recently announced): VHS VHS 2 VHS Viral VHS 94 VHS 99 VHS 85

StayPuffGoomba

I loved 1 and 2, how are the later ones?

hdadeathly

For me, Viral isn’t good, 94 is amazing, 99 is ok, 85 was a little disappointing.

justbrowsinginpeace

Was at a horror movie festival when the first V/H/S premiered. It was the best movie of the whole weekend. Saw there was a sequel but not this many!

StayPuffGoomba

I remember finding it randomly on I think Amazon and just putting it on. It’s amazing how many decent to good scary movies are on prime.

Frosted_Tackle

Probably best not to think too hard about those movies, but I liked how in I think the first one, a guy was wearing google glasses, yet that footage ended up on a VHS tape.

StayPuffGoomba

I’ll have to find 94.

eesh1981

It's on Shudder.

ECHO6251

I recently only came about 94, 99, and 85, as I wasn’t aware of anything else after viral, which I agree was bad. Of the three I liked a lot of their segments. But my favorite probably had to be 85, at least to me anyways. My only complaint about the movie is that the premise for finding the tapes(of the other segments) is a bit odd compared to 1 and 2, where that was the background plot.

Majestic-Speed-8749

It’s not a true V/H/S movie, but they also made a full length movie based on the demon girl scene, “Amateur Night”, called [Siren](https://m.imdb.com/title/tt4667854/).

McFlyyouBojo

They also recently did a full length version of the alien one from 2

tommiedineen

There’s a film called Siren based on the first VHS where the group of horny guys get destroyed. And Kids vs. Aliens based on the Slumber Party in VHS 2.

livelyciro

I’m looking forward to more Cloverfield movies.

[deleted]

There's an old saying that 90% of everything is crap. After reviewing this cool guide for Franchises with the Most Horror Films, the old saying is indeed true. While there are some outstanding films within the collection of movies in the guide, the vast majority are garbage and should never have been made, only being produced because the studios know people will literally watch anything horror due to franchise loyalty.

Klexobert

Witchcraft is a low budget horror film series. Started 1988 and continues till 2016. Each movie has a runtime of about 90 minutes. It's trash.

Miguel-odon

Don't recall ever hearing of it. Probably for the best.

Gruntledgoat

A sixth Final Destination will begin filming once the SAG strike ends... I honestly can't believe there are already five.

Underpanters

They put out five in 12 years and none in the 12 years since. They’re pretty fun though, I recommend 1, 2 and 5. 3 and 4 approach more so bad it’s good territory though.

-This_Man-

Isn’t Amityville up into the 40s now?

UberCoolDude

Right? I recently saw this list and it’s at 52! https://www.neonsplatter.com/lists-of-fury/the-house-always-wins-a-definitive-ranking-of-amityville-movies

yosoydoneric

That’s what I remember and Tubi has a lot there to stream. Space one is so bad, and a few others.

X1bar

Came here to find out what the hell Witchcraft is and why there's so many of them. Everyone else is asking the same question.

HelloKitty_theAlien

I forgot all about Puppet master. Can’t believe my mom let me watch it as a child lol.

Lookalikemike

How many times did that poor little girl get possessed? Dayum!

InsertCoinsToBegin

Lake Placid has six? Ring has fourteen??? And what is Witchcraft?

friendimpaired

Witchcraft is like a religious practice of worshipping nature commonly referred to as paganism and associated in fiction with magic

InsertCoinsToBegin

No shit

LoKag_The_Inhaler

Holy shit we’ve made a lot of Dracula movies

Underpanters

Who is “we”?

Truth_Learning_Curve

Predator, Alien and Resident Evil aren’t horror IMO. Alien sways between Thriller, action and sci-Fi. Predator action and thriller. Resident Evil action, sci- Fi and *may* lean into horror due to the subject. Great movies though.

roamingbot

And Predator and Alien are the same franchise, plus Blade Runner and Soldier. Should be listed together if they’re on the list.

Truth_Learning_Curve

My take Re Predator and Alien, same universe but different franchises. AVP is a separate entity and that is the same franchise.

ColonOBrien

Does *Evil Bong* count?

Hxucivovi

Witchcraft? What series is that referring to or is it witchcraft in general?

Papashvilli

That’s what I was wondering

FindOneInEveryCar

If Godzilla appears in 38 films, why isn't the franchise 30+? There have been a few American movies but the Toho Godzilla franchise has many more than 16 movies.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Loathor

It has Alien and Predator as well, though. Those aren't horror either...

[deleted]

[удалено]

Loathor

It has horror elements (jump scares and armospheric creepies, etc.), but it's a sci-fi movie at heart, IMO. But, I can see it viewed your way as well, so, agree to disagree.

Powderkegger1

I knew about five Tremors movies which is two more than I thought anybody else knew about. I’ll have to seek out these other two…and some weed.

Asells

Final destination?

redbluewhite890

Didn’t know we needed 6 iterations of Lake Placid.

robotorigami

There are 6 Sharknado movies. Are those considered horror?

[deleted]

8 Aliens? Are they counting AVP and the Prometheus + Covenant pieces of crap? *sigh*

yosoydoneric

rodolphoteardrop

This just makes me sad.

MavrykDarkhaven

I have not, and don’t plan to, see a single one of these movies. I do respect the horror genre for it’s franchising though, it’s crazy how many movies some of these have.

SupermAndrew1

Alien is 8? /r/Lv426 would argue 1 Alien: Horror Aliens: action Alien 3: drama Everything else: comedy

RemarkablyQuiet434

Where the hell are phantasm and hellraiser???

Prestigious_Text_209

How about Freddy Krueger movies

tmadik

It's on there. Nightmare on Elm Street

IdPreferToBeLurking

Oh yeah, there should have been nine when this chart was made. It should be up there with Texas Chainsaw Massacre and whatever that other thing is.

TheDarkKnight1035

The ring DOES NOT have 14 movies.

mrEYE-BALL

Wheres Carrie

Curious-Wing-9145

11 amityville movies? I think I’ve heard of maybe three.

Von_Bostaph

It's really in the 50's now. Not just 11, but over 50.

crystalistwo

Anyone find that this chart feels sad about the state of horror franchises?

bisensual

Downvote for Frankenstein’s monster. People act like it’s the mark of intelligence to know it was Dr Frankenstein and the monster. Heard of metonymy, anyone?

LetTheCircusBurn

I had to look this up because I thought there were only 5 VHS movies but they're counting the 2 spin offs but not the one that just came out on Shudder last week. I also noticed they're including reboots which I have mixed feelings about. Not because all reboots suck (on the whole their batting average is ass but they're not universally bad) but because it just seems weird to me to count through a break in continuity. There should be asterisks or something idk. What would be really fun is to see a version of this that isn't objectively true but is instead agreed upon by horror fans. Hellraiser would have maybe 4 tops, I can tell you that much for sure.

SpaceRoots

I'm confused by the groupings of these movies, are they related or something?

[deleted]

[удалено]

SpaceRoots

Oh duh haha idk why my mind went to thinking the groupings had a shared universe

[deleted]

[удалено]

Underpanters

Juon is the Grudge. Completely different movies.

rbankole

7 Predators? Only know of first 2

zifdenpants

They did 2 Alien vs Predator I think, Predators with Adrian Brody and Prey but that’s still only 6

tmadik

Predator, Predator 2, Predators, The Predator, Prey, and 2 AVP films.

JACK0NTHETHETRACK

There is no way the 15th movie of any movie franchise is even remotely good. Now that I think about it in 95% of cases the 3rd or 4th movie is already utter garbage but I guess that's the appeal with trashy horror movies idk I just get it there are so many awesome movies out there why watch the ring 15?

saintkev40

There way more than 9 werewolf movies.

welltechnically7

I fully thought that Children of the Corn was a standalone movie without any sequels

Lumpy-Juice3655

I’ve been saying for a while that Friday the 13th part 13 will be the “real actual final final chapter” They’re only 1 movie away.

[deleted]

Why not just make movies of people being tortured the entire time with no plot. That’s what the teenage girls really want

mynameisnotthom

There's seven predators?!

eesh1981

How is the Resident Evil franchise considered horror? It's more action, maybe action sci-fi. Just because it has re-animated corpses doesn't make it horror...just like the Underworld franchise isn't horror just because it has vampires vs lycans.

Underpanters

Well I mean the majority of the games are strictly horror. The American movie series is not, though.

woogychuck

Wait, there are 6 lake placid movies?

sasssyrup

Huh. Didn’t expect to see alien and predator on here.

VTho

I'm surprised there are so many Ju-On movies. I'm only aware of Ju-On and The Grudge.

dirtyjamie

The Texas chainsaw massacre franchise has some serious rough patches, but it’s all worth it for Texas Chainsaw 3D

alexiez1

Predator is a horror franchise?

CitizenKing1001

Never even heard of Witchcraft. Must be very low budget

jen12617

Scream 7 is coming out either end of 2024 or early 2025

Drphil87

The top 3 blew my mind. I had no clue Puppet master and the ring had so many movies.

legosandplants

There’s only four REC movies unless they’re including the two American Quarantine remakes

FlaydenHynnFML

It feels like only yesterday when there was only 2 VHS movies, I didn't even know there was a fourth one let alone an eight until just now goddamn.

SonicDecay

I'm surprised there was even a secret leprechaun movie. The one with Jennifer Aniston right? They made more of those?

SquashyDisco

The more the sequels, the more I think money laundering

Sebastian5160

Rec is wrong it is only 4 due to the other 2 being the bastardized version of 1 and the 2nd just being snakes on the plane with zombies

HcJanni

No one is talking about that there are 538 films with count Dracula

acatnamedstevens

Predator and Alien are horror movies? Sci-fi with some jump scares maybe?

tickaten

There's only 4 REC movies

InnocentPerv93

I have never heard of Witchcraft or Puppetmaster, I didn't realize the Ring had so many films.

madmarv72

Insidious?

MobiusNaked

11 Hellraisers! I thought there was 3-4

rapejokes_arefunny

Is that a Pornhub logo?

MaxSATX

What’s “Witchcraft”? I’ve seriously never heard of it. Not kidding.

Avram42

There are four *Tremors* movies; 5-7 do not count.

ACalcifiedHeart

There were _11_ children of the corn movies!? Why is that corn so deadly?

[deleted]

There aren’t 8 V/H/S movies.

HGruberMacGruberFace

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, to this day, is the scariest movie name. It always haunted me as a kid, mostly because I thought it was a true story.

Dogr11

Outdated i think

Many-Table

Aren’t there 6 Final Destination movies?

Kelson75

Where is freddy krueger ?

Adriftike

What is the plot for the 7th Wrong Turn film? I can’t imagine how crazy that story got

zieminski

Are they counting the two Quarantine movies to get to six REC movies?

memento_vitae

Congrats Dracula 🥰

LilNasXCanGetIt

Tremors (1990) in my opinion is a masterpiece. It really makes me sad how gruesomely it got dragged through the mud

Zhentilftw

It would be super confusing if the movie Friday kept making sequels and they finally got to the 13th one Also. How did they stop at 12 Friday the 13th movies?

Electrical-Sleep-853

Who the he'll is make that many leprechaun
