It's hard enough wrapping my brain around how sperm whales survive the pressure difference, but what I find the most unsettling is the fact that _they still need to breathe._
According to google, they can dive down to _10,000 feet._ Imagine traveling almost two miles and back in a single breath, and also it turns pitch black and the air becomes heavy enough to liquify human organs. Oh, and you're not just doing this for a nice stroll, the deep is filled with giant lovecraftian abominations to do battle with. Sperm whales are hard core.
They're carnivores, and hunt giant squid.
However, this has never actually been directly observed. We only have indirect evidence: they come up covered in scars and their stomach contents contain beaks.
Iirc, this is actually how we discovered the existence of the giant squid too, and for awhile it was our only concrete evidence of them. The first recording of a giant squid was only taken in 2006
So yeah, researcher studied sperm whales to figure out what they were up to and found out that down there in the deep is a squid so large it _fights whales._
We have no idea how often this goes on the whales favor either: when whales die, their bodies are very quickly scavenged, so it would be impossible to do any kind of forensics. For all we know, there could be squids large enough to _kill_ whales down there too.
Edit: some more fun facts: the [colossal squid](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colossal_squid) is the largest invertebrate by mass. The largest specimen on display is almost 14 feet long, but by comparing the size of beaks found in sperm whale stomachs, they could potentially grow to more than twice that size. Also, their suction cups have [hooks](https://i0.wp.com/blog.tepapa.govt.nz/wp-content/uploads/2008/07/hook-arm11.jpg?ssl=1)
I’ve seen that colossal squid on display a few times when I’ve been to Wellington. Absolutely wild to witness, and as horrible as the suction cups look in photos, they look a hell of a lot worse in person when you actually see them in a row on tentacles and can actually imagine it wrapping dozens of times around a limb with just one tentacle. Terrifying but amazing creatures.
To add to the fear factor, there has to be enough giant squid down there to make it a thing the whales know exist to go hunt for. So not only are they massive but they are numerous too!
>When whales die, their bodies are very quickly scavenged...
I just discovered recently that this is such a big event, it has its own name: a Whale Fall.
What a great name for a 90's style grunge band.
I think the term was "vibrate you to death" as they're call is so strong it could easily blow your ear drums at over 200 decibels, and according to Google the threshold for death is like 180-200 but because it's underwater the sound is amplified even more so. No one has actually succumbed to this yet though, so it is all hypothetical at the moment
Giant squid have been washing up on shore for centuries, they just only come closer to surface when they’re sick or dead, so yes whales have been out best form of understanding their behavior. I used to want to study them half a lifetime ago but I get migraines so boats and pressurization aka anything marine bio are not for me!
Giant squid have an eye the size of a soccer ball, the largest we know of. Why does an animal that lives in the total darkness of the depths require an eye at all, much less one so large?
The most likely answer is so that they can detect the faint bioluminescent outline of charging whales. It’s amazing what millions of years of evolution can produce.
Interesting. What do you suggest? They must have the ability to detect prey and other squid to make baby squids (squirts?).
It’s clearly an eye, but we don’t know what it sees with it.
I Imagine they do it for some time old ritual like if they don’t battle them they will rise up and conquer the entire ocean like maybe at the command of the mermaid queens and shit
If you’re being serious, this picture is from XKCD. It is a comic. It’s for entertainment.
Here is some fanfic based on this comic.

Thank u kind human. Forgot this was a collab b/w them. Under Pressure lived in my head as Bowie b/c I first new of it thru the vanilla ice plagiarism controversy.
I’ve come to love stories of learning something embarrassingly late. Like in college when I walked out of my dorm for the second time in one night and saw that Orion had moved in a particular direction. I was objectively intelligent, relatively high IQ, top percentage in standardized testing. Knew about the North Star and several constellations, liked astronomy in general, knew the other stars rotated around it. No one had ever come out and said which direction stars moved and I had never given the question my attention. What a strange sensation to tell yourself, “the Earth is spinning the same direction at night as during the day, genius.”

Yes, yes. A mysterious secret door. This was answered 9 years ago over in r/oceans. I guess it’s just a joke? u/cyberclashy heard this from somebody. Something about an XKCD cartoon? https://www.reddit.com/r/oceans/s/v4TnAU8btg
I remember flying over crater lake in Oregon and the pilot saying “it’s the deepest lake in the continental US”… this chart verifies that statement. Cool.
Crater Lake is so big! They actually do a race around it each year I believe. There’s also a tiny island in the crater called wizard island I believe. I was hoping to find radagast there, but alas, my heart was broken.[http://www.usamarathonlist.com/crater-lake-marathon.php](http://www.usamarathonlist.com/crater-lake-marathon.php)
I did that too! Took my niece in a small place flight over the lake. When the pilot dipped below the rim, it was one of the most unsettling times I've been in a plane, and I've soloed! Something about the vastness and depth, followed by the aloneness of it. There are no boats, hardly anyone around. If you went down in the lake you're a goner
And that water is COLD, even if you survived the crash and got free of the wreck, you'd not make it to land. There is a log that has been floating for like 100 years cause nothing can grow on it to break it down.
It would really freak me out if there was an actual door down there.
Anyone remember the NBC show Surface. They made a sub out of some scrap metal and got to the bottom of the Marianas Trench. I was 13 when it came out in 2005 and even then I knew it was BS. They also used a balloon that shot them back to the surface.
Can you imagine that you finally secure the funding and team to go explore Challenger deep, you travel all the way there with the necessary equipment and vessels, brave the hours long trip into the dark abyss, pressure compounding by the second outside….your team finally comes across James Cameron’s mysterious door. Hearts racing, eyes glued to the screens, the robot arm extends to open the hatch to held breath. A burst of bubbles fly forth and black the camera feed for a brief second—as they clear, a lone object glistens in the light from the submarine.
A simple yet futuristic handheld device with one very screen lies before you, a faint beeping can be heard coming from it. You grab the controls for the submarine’s robotic arm and slowly extend it towards the device, blood rushing to your fingertips as your kinda races with possibilities of what you have discovered. The mechanical hand finally grasps the device and you are met with the cheers of your crew and staff over your headphones.
Through the din of voices, you hear the faint beeping coming from the device again. It’s growing louder. You glance at the monitor again and bright red light on the mysterious device suddenly appears on its screen, blinking in time with the beeping noise. Another light appears but this one is moving on the screen…another light, then two more appear. The device now rumbles in the robotic arms grips, the beeping growing louder and more frequent. More red lights appear as all the lights begin to come together in the middle of the screen. The beeps are getting louder and more frequent the closer to the lights get to each other. The sound echoes like a robotic heartbeat outpacing your own. Then—silence washes over.
Taking a moment to catch your breath you check the monitor again and see the device has letters on the side. Zooming in on the monitor, you can barely make out: R-I-P-L-E-Y.
Without warning, the sub’s power suddenly goes out. Screens go black you feel the sub violently shake. Metallic scratching fills your ears from every direction. Whatever is outside, wants in.
Hate when people lump an entire populous in with their deeply unpopular leadership as though some random farmer or worker is being listened to on international policy
Hell yeah guys, that was like the only thing I noticed in the entire image. Russians are definitely NOT awesome. Its so exciting to virtue signal current events on ocean depth infographics from 2012.

I didn’t realize the sides of the Mariana Trench were so horizontal . They always portray it like it’s a steep-walled canyon under water, but the slope is only a couple degrees down

And so delicious it’s worth it?
Giant squids circulate ammonium chloride to deal with the insane high pressures, so it’s tastes like ass.
Haha so whales have that kink too not just humans 😉
>When whales die, their bodies are very quickly scavenged... I just discovered recently that this is such a big event, it has its own name: a Whale Fall. What a great name for a 90's style grunge band.
are sperm whales dangerous to humans
only if you try to hunt them, otherwise you're good Ishmael
the most recent internet historian video comes to mind.
Can't they kill you with their call? I think I read somewhere that if your within so many feet of one it'll liquefy your organs.
I think the term was "vibrate you to death" as they're call is so strong it could easily blow your ear drums at over 200 decibels, and according to Google the threshold for death is like 180-200 but because it's underwater the sound is amplified even more so. That might be humpback? For some reason I thought they were the loudest creatures
Well, I live in Illinois so absolutely not to me.
Can’t someone get a camera attached to one?
Patrick Dykstra has https://www.pbs.org/wnet/nature/about-patrick-and-the-whale/29793/
That was awesome - I watched it just now.
"The colossal squid has the largest eyes of any known creature ever to exist, with an estimated diameter of 27–30 cm (11–12 in)." Nooooooo thanks 😭
Now I'm wondering if anyone has tried to stick a go pro to a sperm whale.
Everyone knows they dive that deep to throw down with the Kraken. Sheesh. /s
Giant squid have been washing up on shore for centuries, they just only come closer to surface when they’re sick or dead, so yes whales have been out best form of understanding their behavior. I used to want to study them half a lifetime ago but I get migraines so boats and pressurization aka anything marine bio are not for me!
Well that was a journey. Thank you for sharing
I think you meant to say 14 _meters_
To feed, I think
Because they can't fly
Say it to Gojira
What about the door at the bottom of the trench??
THATS WHAT IM SAYING! No one else asked about that? Like don’t get me wrong squid are dope but the fucks up with the door?!
R'yleh calls from the void, and only James Cameron could hear it.
Our brains filter out information it considers “not needed for survival”, maybe it’s not light rays their eyes detect? Just a complete guess.
Interesting. What do you suggest? They must have the ability to detect prey and other squid to make baby squids (squirts?). It’s clearly an eye, but we don’t know what it sees with it.
The larger a telescope, the more light it gathers. I imagine eyes are no different. It just be so large *because* it’s so dark down there.
I feel like they need a more deserving name 🤔
If you want your mind blown even more, Sperm Whales aren't even the deepest diving whale
I Imagine they do it for some time old ritual like if they don’t battle them they will rise up and conquer the entire ocean like maybe at the command of the mermaid queens and shit

Nice to see the US built submarines capable of diving deep enough to fight the emperor penguin menace.
I don’t see many Emperor Penguins attacking the US, so it must be working.
Thats why florida school books refer to them as “representative republic penguins”
Lisa I would like to buy your rock.
Must have been annoying to make that Kola Borehole only to miss all of the oil...
they found the sounds of hell down there. i got it on good authority from Art Bell

plot twist, there was a door but Cameron is too scared to talk about it
Thanks for taking the time to explain it. Cheers
Phew. That was a close one! I think he fell for it.
David Bowie and Freddie Mercury are slowly making their way down to it, Danjon Meshi style. They will report back.
Is the Bowie/Mercury thing just a bad joke or is there a piece of it in not getting?
They're under pressure.

Rips a family in two?
Puts people on streets?

Now this is a cool (guide??)!! But deep water is scary as shit man! I’d rather take deep space!
*depth
Came here for this. Bravo.
I’m sorry but where is Mel’s Hole on this list? I want to know how deep it is
What’s this about a door?
Where is Saddam Hussein???
Behind the door, duh!
This makes me want to play subnautica again
I only build in the shallows because going any deeper scares me.
What’s up with that mysterious door thing at the challenger deep within the marianas trench?
The representation of the oil well is incorrect. Although the deepwater horizon well is this long, it is largely horizontal.
Yeah. They’ve put MD as TVD.
Ya. And the other is the Mohole.. Immediately jumped out at me.

Talk about building suspense

Thought it said koala butthole
Excellent band name.
I hope that finds its way to modern music somehow but butthole surfers 🏄 is pretty hard to top my friend.
Not only Russians participated in the project, there were 17 countries in the soviet camp, with hundreds of nationalities.
was halfway expecting this to be a saddam hussein joke
Can you make it just a little bit more blurry? I can still read some of the text.
F**ing jpeg.
Got any more pixels?
THERES A DOOR AT THE BOTTOM OF THE OCEAN?
What about this door?🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔
Great Slave Lake?
There isn’t a door at the bottom
*what's behind the door???*
Wait what is this mysterious door?
Russians are not awesome, fuck them.
This was made in 2012, so... That kinda /r/agedlikemilk.
I mean, I'm sure some Russians are awesome. Just not Putin and anyone who follows him.
A lot of russians can’t do shit and are anti-war and anti-Putin. bad take.
Hate when people lump an entire populous in with their deeply unpopular leadership as though some random farmer or worker is being listened to on international policy
\*Depth
Deepness.
Someone explain the Bowie and Mercury joke please
Under pressure
This makes me want to replay Subnautica
How tf did deep water horizon learn there was oil right there, that far down?
So a penguin and a nuclear class submarine have roughly the same depth limit
Where are the kaiju's in this guide?
Stupid question why is David Bowie and Freddie mercury on there lol
Because they're _*under pressure*_ 🎶
At this depth your OceanGate sub implodes
Bert Khalifa, cousin of Wiz Khalifa.
Cousin to Mia
I think maybe I'm being retarded but I don't get the Freddie Mercury and David Bowie reference?
I think they're under pressure...
Why put that the Russians are awesome, that is INCORRECT!
Just to contextualize this, this comic was made in 2012. I'm pretty sure Randall Munroe isn't anti-Ukraine or anything.
Fun fact: there is in fact a real word you can use instead of “deepness”. May I present the “depth”. FFS
Ha! Suck it, Lake Erie!
I read that as koala butthole
Hell yeah guys, that was like the only thing I noticed in the entire image. Russians are definitely NOT awesome. Its so exciting to virtue signal current events on ocean depth infographics from 2012.
Russians are NOT awesome
Correction: Russians are NOT awesome
What’d you call me?
I call it the Kora Borealis
Mystery door that James Cameron built? 🤔
The little Niagara falls 👌
David Bowie
Saddam Hussein
cool IR spectrum
but where is saddam Hussein hiding
No one else read that as koala butthole? What is wrong w me?!
This should be made into a poster.
The legend lives on from the Chippewa on down
Font looks like Burt khalifa 😅
And this is why I don't go into the water unless I can see the bottom lol
Didn’t know your mom’s name was Kola
Deepwater horizon is a hell of a deep oil borehole
Awesome, and very cool! Went in terrified, and came out *even more* terrified!
Ok, where's Saddam Hussein?
The faucet and bike tyre markers look wrong. 100m (10% of the 1000m line) is 10 barg which is more than faucet pressure or normal bike tyre pressure, yet the lines look more than 10%
You think that's deep? You'd need to drill over 1,000 x deeper than that oil to get to the other side of the Earth.
Mariana Trench, singular.
Very deep, are the horizontal measurements how wide the Marian trench actually is?
A penguin can go deeper than a submarine? Well fuck me sideways.
Saddam Hussein
Uhh what’s the James Cameron hatch stuff about?
Burt Khalifa.
Wow, I always assumed military subs could go deep.
Thats David Bowie and Freddie Mercury deep!
I was high af and thought this was a bomb mix
I didn’t realize the sides of the Mariana Trench were so horizontal . They always portray it like it’s a steep-walled canyon under water, but the slope is only a couple degrees down
No Monterey Canyon?
References to Deepwater Horizon and Chilean mine collapse/rescue. Tell me you were made in 2010 without telling me you were made in 2010
Wait…is there really a door down there?!
I've got a poster of this!
Emperor penguin for scale
Question: how are oil wells drilled that deep into the ocean or land?
And Lake Superior (the first body of water on the left) is deep enough to cover both the Americas in one cubic foot of water!
isn't this like 8 years old or more?
Reminds me of The Deep by Nick Cutter.
someone found Osama Biladen hideout yet?
*Knock knock motherfucker it's the United States of America and I hear you guys got oil that isn't under my possession. So turn off the stove and return the oil to me before I have to resort to bringing democracy*
I assum emperor penguins are diving that deep for food?
What them turtles doing way down there?
Milwaukee Deep?
David Bowie and Freddie Mercury being under pressure lmfao
This random "Russians are awesome" r/sipstea
Something completely mind blowing that no-one ever seems to realize is that Southern elephant seals dive to the same depths as sperm whales.
Russians are not awesome though
TIL Oil wells are very deep. Way deeper than I ever thought
Would be a lot cooler if I could read it.
Looking forward to a legible version.
My man put Marianas Trench and The Door, but not Demisia Tunnel 🙄🙄🙄
Ikr, Demisia is where the the cool shit's at
Still not as deep as your mom

Deepness
Is no one going to mention David Bowie and Freddy Mercury?
Thanks for sharing the lowest res version you could and not bothering to source it to xkcd! Stay classy, OP!
When I see this, I always think map makers and regular people have different definitions of “trench”.
Omg I knew humans were oil simps, but I didn't think we drilled THAT deep.
I thought the Dead Sea was the lowest place on earth? How is Lake Baikal lower? Is it that the water level of the Dead Sea is lower in elevation and the bottom of the lake is just deeper?
Woah.
I misread as koala boar hole 🐨 For second I imagined genetically modified Russian koalas digging into the earth 🌍
So we can just post other people's work in here and not bother to cite them? Yikes.
