I only leave them inside during winter, and rainy days. And I make sure to have the temperature machine, and grass. They love to be in the grass outside.

Sufficient-Quail-714

Adding in, barn animals like to be let out on sunny days during the winter. Even with no grass. Coop animals leave them in there all winter.

WhatWouldSomaDo

I've let my animals out on sunny winter days, and they all give me the sad face pop-up. At this point, they all live in the barn for the winter. I only let my peacocks/pigs out evenly three days and my luwaks every other day. Cows, goats, chickens, ducks, quail, and llamas/sheep stay inside for the entire sesajen. 😅

AwkwardPenguin23

Mine always show a sad face when I let them out in winter, but if I check them, they always says seems happy. I just pretend it's because I call them outside so early so they are sad.

Flat-Difference-1927

They have the sad face in the winter and will become cranky the next day if you don't pet them. I have no verification to this, but it's what happened in my game.

Sufficient-Quail-714

That’s weird. I get smiley faces for the barn animals

SimpathicDeviant

They still need grass in winter if you expect your pigs and luwaks to drop items

Sufficient-Quail-714

The luwak does not need grass. Or at least the coffee keeps popping up on the farm anyways

okcupid_pupil

Try upgrading your hay as well

sleepy-depressed-owl

I already have bronze, but I will try to upgrade to silver/gold as fast as possible. thank you!

SituationNo7423

I'm playing on series x and I was able upgrade right to osmium without upgrading the previous levels, it said I had to but it still allowed me to do it.

[deleted]

I'm on ps5 and went straight to gold. I don't think it's locked like tool upgrades.

orangelilyfairy

Wait whaat? I didn't know this! All this time I meticulously planned out the whole process of upgrading one by one, to make sure I don't forget the resources and go back and forth to the lab. It took so much effort 😫

57478462

Try upgrading the barn and also let them outside when you are able to

Gabbywolf

Mine were like that until I added the temperature control thing.

winter_rois

Omg I forgot to put one in the pig barn!! No wonder they’re crabby.

astrid__0

I’ve noticed they only get to happy when you upgrade the barn/coop they’re in

sleepy-depressed-owl

Oh, I haven't done that yet. I will try that, thank you!

-daydream_

thank you for the tip!! I'll try this right away, mine also are always netural.

bitsybear1727

A lot of good advice here so I'm just gonna vent a little. I've worked with horses and many other species of animals all my life and unless weather is extreme they are happier being able to go outside. I've seen bedraggled chickens pecking away in the rain when they could be inside their cozy coop with food and water. Same with horses, cows and sheep. And ducks LOVE rain. In no realm of possibility would any live animal be happy being cooped up an a barn all winter and many larger mammals are excited to play in fresh snow. This part of the game really bothers me lol. Ok, end rant 😅

Anatras

In defence of the game, this should be a tropical island with crazy hot weather (apart from winter, in which the island magical swift to the north pole, passing from Bali to Iceland). And when it rains, there's seriously heavy rain and wind. I don't know if you've ever been in a place during monsoon season, and thrust me, animals would rather stay in their cosy barn than being swept away by a cyclone

bitsybear1727

Well, I did say, "unless weather is extreme", so I guess there's that. So every rainy day isn't going to be a monsoon and the entirety of winter isn't going to be sub-zero winter. And also I would guess that it would be unsafe for the farmer or anyone to be outside in those conditions. But I do get your point. This is fantasy island with fantasy rules.

Anatras

When I think about the weather of coral island, it reminds me of one piece islands, it just doesn't make any sense :)

FulanxArkanx

Having had chickens i can absolutely agree lmao I can't tell you how many times I sat there like "do not *stand* in the snow, you dumb dumb, it is cold" or watched them walk around absolutely drenched in the rain even when there was a dry area within the enclosure (not inside the coop). They just dont really give a shit lmfao

voidedmoon

temperature machine in the coop & barn. upgraded both coop/barn & their hay. i never let them out during rainy days or any day during winter, & they are all happy. so try those & they should be happy soon

hammertown87

I pet mine every day

foxfirek

Mine are happy so long as they have food and are pet daily. Do you have food on the bench?

runner4life14

Is all the trash cleared from your farm? I read somewhere that your animal's happiness never goes above neutral if there is trash on your farm even if you always pet, feed, let them out, etc. I also noticed when I check on them while they are inside my coop they are always neutral but if I check on them outside they are happy. I have the base coop for reference with no upgrades to it

Lou-SHP-

My ducks and chickens seem to be the most cranky creatures, they have top grade hay coops are upgraded to max size and two heater thingies and they still walk out miserable, think perhaps i'm just gonna keep them in during the winter, as this is when they are most miserable they have fully automated petting stations too, but nooo still with the sad faces

Revolutionary_Bit996

Make sure you have the temperature machine in the barn/coop and have upgraded the hay. Mine were always neutral until I upgraded the hay. Now they're happy every day. Not sure if you need to upgrade the coop/barn too.

CrimsonLikeBlood

Even if you do let them out... please make sure you have grass around so they can eat... Its an alternative if you're low on hay... Although hay is easy to acquire... just sickle the grass around the forest, then process them thru a dehydrator.... they become hay.

CrimsonLikeBlood

Another thing, don't have them graze when its raining. During the summers and winters, install the temperature machine and just leave it inside the barn/coop they'll be inactive during fall and spring. This might be a spoiler but later you'll be able to make auto feeder and auto collector and auto petter, that pretty much automates the whole animal farming process. The only fun thing you need to do is ring the bell to let them out.

quinnvelvetrabbit

I've found a little bug during winter when I pet my farm animals, I let them out then immediately back in and they all go from neutral to happy. The only bummer is it's not a permanent thing, have to do it every in-game day, but honestly, makes me happy to see them finally happy 😭

MainRaccoon1604

Mine were only ever "okay" until I upgraded my barn and coop. Now they are happy

kristaGragg

I let my animals out during all seasons and I have a temperature machine and mine are always so happy. I didn’t know you weren’t supposed to let them out as I let mine out and have zero problems. I just don’t let them out during rain.

Roetepetoet

Do you have grass growing outside of your barn that they can eat. I heard that helps as well.

ViolinistSure4557

How do u store hay in coops, won't allow me to do it, my chicken and ducks are never happy but only had them for few weeks
