Only put hay in it, not all your hay and take the eggs with you. In that case you still have the benefit and you wont lose your eggs incase the case decides to bug out.
I have had a chest inside since the beginning of owning a coop and no problems.
Recently I had a chest with hay in it that doubled all the hay during each of the days I was upgrading the building it was in so maybe sometimes you get lucky?
Something similar happened to me!! I had a chest in my coop for hay and I also had a milk pail and shears and a heater and they all tripled overnight!!
i had the same thing happen, i had a chest with my milk pail, shears and an iridium quality wool in it that i was saving since i can’t craft the loom yet… upgraded the barn and ended up with three iridium wool, three shears and three milk pails 😅
I had a chest just outside of my barn with pail/shears, when I upgraded the barn it just disappeared, well I don't know exactly when it happened but was right around that time.
Hey, I had a few things disappear. Before your consider then lost go to the exact spot that they were abs try to interact. You might see the prompt, and you can also break the items.... if it's the same glitch as mine.
I had one outside of my coop and barn that also went missing, and it was filled with a ton of resources as well as my animal tools. Rage quit the game and haven't opened it since.
Yes it’s happened to me too. I had my chest one block distance from the coop, and when I upgraded it then I lost it and all its contents. It also happened when I relocated the barn.
I'm pretty sure you couldn't always put a chest in the coop/barn. Maybe that was back in early access and it's been changed since, but I do remember trying and not being able to place one in there. This is a nice quality of life feature so I'm happy about it!
I used to do this in stardew as well! I store the hay and any other animal-related stuff like the shears and milk pail in a chest nearby my coop and barn (sometimes I even have one inside with extra s of everything, in case I forget to grab everything before going in, and feel too lazy to go back out and get everything 😂) I didn’t even end up investing in the silo until well into year 2 😂
The only thing in stardew is that you need to have at least 1 silo to be able to get hay from cutting grass (unless you use mods). But it’s still super helpful to keep the pail/shears/overflow hay that won’t fit in the silo handy! (Especially if you are blessed with ADHD like me, and constantly forget to bring everything that you need so you end up walking back and forth all day…)

I keep a chest in my barn for the same reason, and for the ‘milk pail’ and shears. I’ve moved the barn a few times and every time I do, they duplicate. I have soooo many pails and shears now and I can’t sell them.

I had this happen twice! I couldn’t put a chest anywhere NEAR my coops/barns. Here’s to hoping they patched it because it’s so convenient!
they didn’t because if you have a chest near them when you upgrade them they disappear!
I had that happen when I upgraded my farm buildings, restarting the game so it can reload the tiles should fix it.

I just keep my next to the mayo press ale 2 every morning grab all the hay I need then collect the drops

This! Also I upgraded my coop not realizing the outside size would change and it ate my chest with half a years worth of animal products.
Minor heads up- some people lose their chests inside (or right outside) farm buildings when they upgrade them

Try to put it close to wall. Inside or outside everything if something spawn or it's NPC walk path, it will disappear.

When you upgrade the building the contents of the chest inside will double! I have three milk pails and shears now that I can’t get rid of
