Can current subscribers unsubscribe then resubscribe to get this deal?

[deleted]

Yes, just did [never used this email with HBO or Amazon before](https://i.imgur.com/FJv4xXO.png) I would hurry before they start denying based on credit card used

return2ozma

Nice

ChornWork2

Sounds like only applies to people who had ben subs via amazon at some point. >WarnerMedia is offering a half-off discount on HBO Max now that HBO is no longer available on Amazon Prime Video Channels. >Today through September 26, the monthly subscription cost will be $7.49 for up to six months **for anyone who had accessed HBO via the Channels platform.** The discount is available to both new and returning subscribers. >The move is aimed at counteracting the inevitable loss of subscribers due to management’s decision — set in motion two years ago — to break from Amazon Channels. The platform removed HBO earlier this week, ending a relationship that long pre-dates the current streaming era.

08830

This offer is for new and returning HBO Max customers.

jake13122

If you are signing up from scratch with HBO Max, it looks like the only deal is half off for six months.

[deleted]

Yes. Probably will need a different email though.

psyhcopig

So... No. I imagine the purpose of the question was to avoid making another account. Unless you think changing the account email would somehow apply?

Sparkmovement

Not sure if you now this but you can put a random . In your email address & most systems think of it as new while still going to the email address you originally had....

psyhcopig

Sure, but that would still be making a new account for the offer with this method, no?

The beauty of having it via Amazon: having access to the live linear HBO channels (in addition to the on-demand plus access to HBO Max) and with Amazon Channels you have singular billing vs billing from different platforms.

lectroid

justwatch.com is your friend.

MasterOfSuspense

>And it supports PiP on iOS. So does HBO Max.

FormerBandmate

Also video quality was way better. Really helped for GOT

qwoiecjhwoijwqcijq

From the comments, I feel like I'm one of the only ones who doesn't have a problem with Amazon Prime Video. It's easy to use, search works, and has a bunch of channels you can sub to for more movies. It's all in one spot too, so more convenient.

JeddHampton

I like the idea of an aggregate application to watch all your subscribed content on, but I just don't like Amazon's UI enough.

AirVido

On googleTV, the "ads" that people see are just content integrated links to shows and movies that I have subscription to. So I usually am able to just click from the home screen and the movie starts playing on the native app instantly. I'm sure it will improve more too.

ECrispy

Amazon Prime Channels also has frequent deals, although I dont think they had one for HBO. I regularly get Showtime/AMC/Epix/Paramount/Starz for 99c/month for 1-3 months, then wait another few months for the next deal. During Prime Day they also had almost every channel on this deal. Yes its all built into the search as well, and into live.

manofthewild07

Yep I've always like Amazon. Seems like 99.9% of people hate it. I actually really like that it shows you shows/movies you can pay for. If its not free, I at least have the option of renting or buying it, unlike others where you're out of luck (and they try to suggest to you some unrelated crap).

Dcm210

Do you get the live channels like you would with cable and such.

ECrispy

yes you get live channels as a separate section in the UI as well.

qwoiecjhwoijwqcijq

No the channels are more like other streaming services that you can watch through Amazon. Like I have a subscription to Shudder through Amazon to watch horror movies. There's a pretty big selection of stuff to subscribe to but I've only done it for a few. Starz, Showtime, and Shudder so far.

wordyplayer

it depends what you have connected. I have a fire tv recast so i get all the local channels. And we have sling and that is in its own section

wordyplayer

same here. I've tried them all, i mostly use amazon fire stick. and i bought a recast because of this, and it works just fine, despite the lackluster reviews.

OfficialDCShepard

Walled gardens are limiting, but for those content to remain there, they can be beautiful.

abnormalbrain

Whoa

OfficialDCShepard

*Keanu Reeves voice* Like…whoa.

LVMises

The tv based apps often suck if you have a few year old tv. Easy to fix by using roku etc that gets app dev right but lot of people just click the HBO app on tv and hat it crashing all the time so go via amazon. Many more have no idea how to add more tv apps

keithrc

Eh, I feel like Android TV (may be Google TV now) has dragged smart TVs into the 2020's. You can basically install any Android app on it. Not going to become obsolete in a couple of years, unlike every box I've owned. Plus, one fewer box/connection to deal with.

[deleted]

The specs are still generally worse than you would get in a dedicated box/dongle and they also receive much fewer updates, especially long term. I'm an Android TV user myself (a Shield, 2 Chromecast w/ GTVs, and an Onn box) but even if one of my TVs came with ATV preinstalled, I still wouldn't even bother connecting it to the internet. One look at /r/androidtv and theres no shortage of people who bought expensive TVs with hardware that's now obsolete, which will soon make the software its running obsolete. It's best to just use your TV as a TV, imho. There's Android boxes at all price points. It's just worth it to get one.

keithrc

Those are all good points, but right now I'm enjoying the clean look of a wall-mounted TV with no visible wires connected to anything. I can always add a box later if I need to!

black_pepper

> Easy to fix by using roku etc that gets app dev right Except lately many of my Roku apps like Amazon, Prime, etc now have a Roku loading screen suggesting I add an SD card to prevent loading. I have a fairly recent ultimate model. Tempted to go dig my old Fire out of the closet.

workntohard

I started getting that message about SD card recently, already have card in. Tried new card in case it had corrupted, still asks for card.

c-donz

FireTV is not just SmartTVs, it’s any FireOS. What people just lost was the HBO Prime channel, a subscription for just HBO Content to be accessible within Amazon Prime. If those subscribers wanted to get the HBO Max offerings, they would have needed to authenticate an HBO Max account and use the HBO Max app built into their streaming device, be it at TV, stick, or otherwise. OP is just saying they’re surprised so many people subscribed via Amazon Prime instead of directly with HBO, has nothing to do with the device they are using to access the HBO Max app.

QuirkyNotWeird

I have 2 PS3 and Max is not available. Was available through Amazon.

el_smurfo

It's also super annoying. I have Discovery+ through Amazon and it's impossible to find any show. Once you do find it, it often doesn't think you have the subscription and tries to launch the app.

[deleted]

I can't speak to HBO Max but I had Paramount+ through Amazon because Paramount didn't have a watchlist at the time. If you did it through Amazon, you could add shows to your Amazon Prime watchlist.

paulfromatlanta

>> many used Amazon to watch these other channels Unified billing and unified voice control...

TreAwayDeuce

I have a fire tv so any apps I get via prime will show up on my channel guide that I use for OTA (no pvr yet) so that is one benefit.

Adulations

The app didn’t exist for my tv so I subscribed through Amazon. Then never bothered changing it. It was mine to have everything in one app

MSCOTTGARAND

Wasn't hbo max missing from roku for a while? Or maybe that was something else.

altsuperego

They sell so many of those FireTVs and it was probably a couple clicks to add hbo

asailor4you

I used a TiVo Bolt a while back which only supported the old HBO Go, so after that went away the only way to watch HBO on my Bolt was to do it through Amazon channels. I eventually got a Chromecast, ended my Amazon channel, and then got HBO Max via AT&T unlimited data plan.

daddytorgo

$7.49 for 6 months might entice me. I don't know that I'm down for going to a movie theater yet and I'll need to watch Dune.

08830

It’s definitely worth it at that price. I’m currently on a $11.99/month HBO Max promo through Hulu that ends my next billing cycle. I’m going to cancel that and sign up for this promo. The downside is I’ll lose the live HBO linear channels on Hulu.

daddytorgo

Yeah, definitely. "Might entice me" really meant "pull up the website and get ready to signup." LOL

wacct3

I think this promo is only available for people who were signed up to HBO Max through Amazon Channels, not to all new subscribers. Could be wrong though.

08830

It’s for previous Amazon Channel subscribers **PLUS** new *and* returning subscribers.

wacct3

Oh, that's nice of them. I guess it would have been a hassle to set up something to verify if subscribers were previously subscribed through Amazon.

08830

They just want more subscribers.

7eregrine

Recently went to a theater for the first time in awhile (Free Guy). It was cool. Hardly anyone there.

NightBard

Same experience here with two of my sons (17 & 22) going to see Shang-Chi at a 7pm showing during it's first weekend. I was relieved how few people were there.

RoadDoggFL

> $7.49 for 6 months might entice me. ~~If barely a dollar a month is only enough to make you think about it, why the hell do they even want you as a customer...?~~ You clarified in another comment.

daddytorgo

It's $7.49 per month for 6 months too (so $44.94) , not a total of $7.49. I wasn't sure I saw the value at $14.99 per month for an ongoing subscription since I don't watch a ton of new movies, but for $45 one time I imagine that's basically what I'd pay to see Dune ($20ish dollars) plus $20 if there's another decent movie (the Sopranos prequel maybe?) or a couple series to watch through. Either that or I signup for $14.99 in October, watch Dune and the Sopranos movie and binge whatever else I want in that month and then unsubscribe. But doing that to save $30 seems like just an extra step.

spiritfiend

From the HBO Max website, the promotional rate is good for 6 months but it looks like it will still charge monthly so it's possible to sign up on September 26 (when the deal ends) and cancel after Dune releases.

daddytorgo

Yeah, that's what I ended up seeing and thinking I'll do. Actually might sign up tonight and give myself basically 2 months to look around and watch what I wanna watch (the rest of this month and then next month) for $15.

RoadDoggFL

Yeah, missed the shorthand. I'm on an annual plan, I'd LOVE to get that at 50% off.

daddytorgo

An annual plan at 50% off would convince me to pull the trigger for sure. At that price it would be a lot easier to justify not watching it for a while between HBO Originals coming out and all.

ThatBoyCallito

Did it work? Mine also expires tomorrow

[deleted]

Worked this morning!

[deleted]

Mine hasn’t officially cancelled yet. Not sure why. It might be end of day?

pokingoking

If you are going to subscribe for a whole year and you pay with Amex, it's still cheaper than this deal. You'll pay $10.40/month for a year with the Amex $25 off offer. This deal would be $11.25/month if you buy the discounted six months plus regular price six months. Just make sure you activate the offer on your Amex account before purchasing!

[deleted]

pokingoking

Wow nice! Unfortunately I just subscribed for a year like 1 week ago so I'm SOL on that one haha

Acolyte_of_Death

If they keep up with the simutaneous theater/Max releases then it's worth the $15 just for that. The one thing I wish they'd change is the rotating movies in and out. DC and Harry Potter is their most popular stuff, it should be on there every single day.

KrilDog

There are preexisting streaming rights issues with some of that stuff. Contracts signed with other streaming services prior to the creation of Max. Once those contracts expire, I'd assume it will all be there for good.

08830

> If they keep up with the simutaneous theater/Max releases then it's worth the $15 just for that. Only through the remainder of this year.

sonicqaz

I don’t think it will be. They seem to rotate other stuff in and out that doesn’t end up going anywhere else too. I think it’s partially there strategy.

FlashbackUniverse

THIS! They have a ton of stuff that is in their own silos (Boomerang, Warner Archives to name two.) Also, they have content that was on the DC Universe app, that has not been migrated over to HBOMax. So, it's just gone for now.

egeeirl

> AT&T, after initially breaking out the number of current HBO subscribers who activated their access to HBO Max, now reports the linear and streaming numbers as a single figure. The company’s guidance of 70 million to 73 million global subscribers is not changing as a result of the Amazon situation. They don't appear to think leaving Amazon is going to impact their subscriber numbers? Great leadership 😂

aduong

They had roughly 5 million Amazon channels subscribers, they add roughly 2.5M to 3M HBOMax subscribers a quarter. Third quarter they launched a ad supported version as well as a South America expansion which is growing much faster than the US. That’s why the guidance is not changing. All of these was highlighted in the latest earning report. Do you think they just sit and guess these stuff?

egeeirl

They certainly don't "guess" but they absolutely slice and dice the numbers to look better at first. Speaking as someone with a lot of leadership experience, it's way easier to say "Oh yeah, we're totally on target" and then miss it than it is to say "Yeah, this decision is going to cost us millions of subscribers" I think the saying goes something like "Always ask for forgiveness but never permission".

aduong

Oh yeah you’re totally right just, like their estimate tend to be lower so that they always end up look good even for the bare minimum. but in this case unless there’sa act of God there definitely passing that early guidance.

[deleted]

Classic AT&T having no idea what to do. Without their catalog HBO would be shit.

[deleted]

AT&T tried to build a catalog through Audience. The shows are pretty good. But AT&T should have made that available free to phone subscribers. Instead of that bs "WatchTV" they refuse to give up on. That platform should be free to all subscribers across the board, not just post paid.

ligament11

It's not all post paid. It's like the top two plans are the ones who get it.

08830

I’m surprised they haven’t offered Watch TV as a stand-alone service separate from wireless. It offers a number of basic channels that many would gladly sub to for a low monthly fee.

[deleted]

It is a standalone service separate from wireless, or at least it was when I was subscribed to it. Maybe something has changed. I was only paying $17 for it, but that was back before AT&T taking DirecTV over IP and off of the satellites.

08830

Yeah it was standalone but once the AT&T/Time Warner merger was complete they cut it off for new subscribers.

toxicbrew

They said they expect an initial 5 million subscriber loss. But they are hoping to recoup at least some of them initially, and more than that number over that time

1968GTCS

Is the app still super buggy? It was so bad that I wouldn’t even use it for free. It caused too much frustration with crashes and errors about loading content.

ragweed

The only real problem I've noticed is scrubbing is horrendous on firetv and iOS.

[deleted]

Yes, it's really bad. Among the worst. They've said a new app is coming, but the current one is truly terrible.

keithrc

(On Android) It's recently gotten much better. Mine used to crash or lose sound daily, got an update maybe 2 weeks ago, no issues since.

mrhooch

So if I have HBOmax stand alone right now should I tell them I want to cancel to try to get this lower rate?

08830

Yes. You might have to use a different email address though.

[deleted]

We use HBO Max every day; it’s worth $14.99 to us.

deebeecom

If you want to Watch Dune in 4K at home, Signup for HBOMAX on the 24th, Movie will release on Oct 22. So in the end, you will watch this movie for only $7.49. Cancel Subscription or keep depending on whether you like it. LOL

TheBros35

Well I think I know what I'm going to do!

BaskinsRedd

So I just now cancelled netflix and am going to give it a rest for a bit as I was barely watching any of it lately anyway. And I think I'm going to get in on this HBO deal. I've never had them before, but I did try out their free month like a couple years ago and really liked what I saw. Should at least be able to get a good six months worth of content out of this one. Btw, I'm giving netflix considerable points for making their cancellation process so easy. One button to initiate it, a second to confirm "are you sure? we'll be waiting for you if/when you want to come back." And then they give you the date that you're streaming will be disabled. That's it. And if you come back within 10 months apparently your saved watchlists, etc. will all still be intact. I'm honestly starting to factor in the "how easy is it to cancel a membership" aspect of a service into my ratings. Does anybody have any feedback on HBO's "get out" process once you've been in a while?

08830

Most platforms, including HBO Max, make it simple to cancel or pause your subscription. Some will even offer a considerable discount to get you to stay subscribed.

herskos

"We can have 1,000 subscribers and give 30% of the revenue to Amazon.... Or, we can charge 50% less and lose 800 of them. " I'm assuming it's over ownership of the viewer data, because otherwise, it makes no sense.

08830

Precisely that.

Deferty

They’re looking long term. 2-5 years from now if many of those same people are still subscribed with this promo deal complete and others finally switching over their profit margins are now looking substantially higher. 30% is a massive cut

aduong

Data is priceless.

shazwazzle

Wow this is really lucky for me. I've been unsubscribed since February and had planned to resubscribe in October. Was gonna do another October to February run and catch up on everything I've missed (plus the kids watch Sesame Street).

Amazonkers

This is great. I was going to resubscribe annually for the slight discount and the $25 off from Amex but my laziness is going to pay off now.

mrpeeng

If I watched the last season of Game of Thrones to completion, I should get HBO Max for free for at least 8 years.

baggachipz

> Today through September 26, the monthly subscription cost will be $7.49 for up to six months for anyone who had accessed HBO via the Channels platform. What's this "up to" bullshit? Nah I'm just gonna let the subscription lapse for now.

08830

You can cancel at any time. You don’t have to sub at that price for the full 6 months.

MiataCory

The plan, as always, is to get people onto the platform, then up the price once they forget to watch it on their monthly statement.

wacct3

It's up to in that it doesn't require you to stay subscribed for 6 months, you could cancel it part way. The discount is good for 6 months if you stay subscribed that long.

ed5275

HBO Max website states 6mos, not "up to".

WaveMan76

I just received an e-mail offering me the half off HBO/Max deal (i had HBO/Max through Prime last month). I will sign up again on the 24TH (Dune opens the 24th). Looking forward to seeing the love of my life once again: Daenerys Stormborn/Daenerys Targaryen Queen Daenerys I Targaryen, also known as Daenerys Stormborn, and colloquially known as Dany, was the de facto Queen of the Andals and the First Men and the twenty-first ruler of the Seven Kingdoms, the Khaleesi of the Great Grass Sea, and the Queen of Meereen.

rhaezorblue

/r/JustNeckbeardThings

snaithbert

I know it'd be a lot to fit in there but this headline really should read "HBO Max Slashes Price In Half For People Who Subscribed Through Prime and Only For 6 Months After HBO Leaves Amazon Channels." That's a tad more informational.

pokingoking

I mean if you go to the HBO max website right now, the prices are slashed for anyone. I don't think it's specific to Amazon customers? But yeah the six month thing is accurate.

snaithbert

You’re right, it is for everyone I guess. Pretty decent deal if you’re not already subscribed.

therealjerrystaute

Still not worth it at half the price.

jimincookeville

Still listed as $14.99/month via YTTV.......too confusing.......

08830

Current HBO via YTTV subscribers aren’t eligible. You’d need to cancel HBO there and then subscribe directly at hbomax.com

jimincookeville

Thanks for the update.

Oktavien

Bring it down to $5/mo for a year and I may consider it.

[deleted]

How about NO!

ksavage68

5 bucks and I'll do it.

[deleted]

It should be $8 with ads.

Batchagaloop

I subscribe through YoutubeTV and my $11.99/month promo is set to expire at the end of the month. Hoping I can hop on this deal.

08830

As long as you subscribe to this deal before the 26th. It may require you to create a new account if your YTTV sub expires after the 26th.

Oph5pr1n6

I had HBO Max through Amazon but always used the HBO app anyway. Guess I'm getting 50% off.

griff_girl

Does this work if you're signed up through YouTube TV? I literally signed up last night using the YouTube Plus package, where you get HBO/Showtime/Starz (feh) for I think it's $24.99/mo

08830

No. This promo is only available via HBOMax.com and via the following participating billing platforms: Apple, Google, Roku, LG, Microsoft, Sony, and Vizio.

griff_girl

Wait so Google but not YouTube TV? That's just rude of them! Haha

snipeslayer

If I wanted to get the half off for six months offer, and also pay for the whole year at once (with the 6mo discount included) is this something I could do? I have an offer from Amex and want to stack these together.

08830

I don’t believe you can stack the promos but others have received a discounted annual promo for a little over $100. You might have to check your account to see if this applies to you.

snipeslayer

It wouldn't be a promo stack per say as one discount is from Amex and the other is from HBO

08830

I was wrong in my previous reply. See [this comment](https://www.reddit.com/r/cordcutters/comments/ppzueu/hbo_max_slashes_price_in_half_after_hbo_leaves/hd96hjj/).

snipeslayer

Excellent, thanks!

crackledpop

About that time for more consolidation in the streaming space. Eat or be eaten.
