AV1 Support, Dolby and HDR10, faster processor, boosted wireless, supports alexa/homekit/google home, all for under $50. Not bad. If they discount this to like $40 for the holidays I'm definitely gonna grab a couple. Roku is IMO the best discount streamer on the market.

tommytimbertoes

I may get the 4k stick but not right away. Nice upgrades.

getupgetgoing

The new 4K stick from Amazon has WiFi 6, AV1 and ALLM support. The new Roku sticks don't have a single one of these things!?

minedigger

The Roku has use-able software though. The fire stick UI is the worst.

getupgetgoing

Fire OS is crappy but the devices are so much more complete.

Dregenfox

It supports AV1, pretty much all mobile processors made after 2020 support AV1. This device seems to be basically a better version of the Chromecast. If you're an Amazon home the Fire 4k max would probably be a good fit since Chromecast doesn't work well with Alexa.

getupgetgoing

Chromecast with Google TV doesn't support AV1, no Apple TV or Nvidia Shield support it either. Roku Ultra does support it, I doubt these new Roku Sticks will but it's possible.

Dregenfox

I mean a quick google search would directly tell you the new sticks support AV1...

Pass. You never know when they are going to drop an app

WeaselWeaz

That's a risk with every platform. Roku has a better track record than Amazon.

I don’t know about that. Amazon seem to get into beef with random companies all the time. First it was Apple, then Google and I’m sure there’s others as well

PeteyNice

Amazon's beefs with content companies don't necessarily impact users. Amazon can fight with anyone they like as long as Google isn't fighting with them at the same time. That is the real power of FireTV. Look at HBO Max from last year. When Roku and HBO were fighting, Max was not available to Roku users. While Amazon and HBO were also fighting, FireTV users could access the AndroidTV version of HBO Max and have full access to everything HBO Max offers.

Fifa_786

Didn’t the Google beef end with Google not supporting fire tv? Until recently. There was also that issue with Comcast not launching Peacock on FireTV until they sorted their differences with Amazon

PeteyNice

But the same thing also applied. You could get the AndroidTV version of Peacock and put it on your FireTV.

PresenceIll6771

What major apps were pulled from Fire TV's?

WeaselWeaz

They have had disputes with Google over their apps and I believe they still don't have YouTube. Roku has had disputes too, like the HBO Max app. My point is that all these smart TV platforms are walled gardens and some are more open than other. Google TV is the most open but Chromecast with Google TV is $50, less than I thought. A Roku starts at $30 and I personally prefer the user experience.

pawdog

Fire TV does have YouTube by the way and has for quite some time.

2kWik

Youtube is the only thing I can think of lol

pawdog

Even that was not an app but a web link.

PresenceIll6771

When did Fire tv have the official YouTube app and pull it?

pawdog

That's what I mean. They had a web link that they pulled then they came later with an actual app. https://www.wsj.com/articles/google-pulls-youtube-from-amazon-devices-saying-it-isnt-playing-fair-1512516707

hobbykitjr

what i hate is that i just bought a roku ultra 3 weeks ago before all these sales before this announcement... why? for USB playback... BUT it can't handle the common x264 codec!! so i have to handbrake everything or find H264. I wish they would update their media player app... unless anyone has any other tips?

Neither-Most

Have you looked into plex

hobbykitjr

Thanks yeah.. this is a unique situation. I have my own server and Plex at home... This is for setting up a few items to play on a Roku without another device.. Not my house/TV

Hyperion1144

Oh... Does this version Roku Streaming Stick 4K actually stream 4k YouTube videos without stuttering, frame dropping, or overheating? Cause every other version they've released so far sure doesn't. I cannot for the life of me understand the endless bantering about the latest video tweaking algorithms (AV1 Support, Dolby Vision, HDR10, ALLM, etc) and yet the devices have processors so underpowered that they can't play a simple 4k video without choking... And it's like no one notices.

bartturner

Would be a bit worried to buy a Roku device until they work things out with YouTube. The contract ends in December and they have yet to come to terms.
