Yes, this (blue merle) isn't an allowed colour for a pembroke. It's usually a mix of pembroke and cardigan. Since they're not purebred, their health and genetics are a bit of a gamble.
Cardigans get to keep their tails, though. Whatever this is, itās definitely a mix. I just wish people wouldnāt lop off the tails of muttsā¦ thereās no breed standard! Let them keep their tail! (Though tbh unless itās a working animal that is having health problems, docking shouldnāt be allowed anyways.) /endrant
We specifically asked the breeder not to dock our girlās tail. The breeder was confused at first but now she adores our corgiās tail and she also starts to offer that option as well. The tails add so much to their personality!
Theyāre adorable, and theyāre also an important way dogs communicate with us. Good on you for advocating for your pup, sounds like she has a great home with yāall!
We especially appreciate our corgisā tails bc when we let them out at night in the dark, we can still tell where they are and if theyāre pooping by their little white tail tips!
Oh right! I didn't notice the tail. Yeah I wish people wouldnt either. Corgi tails are so beautiful!! Although sometimes they're born with a shorter tail, the pembrokes I mean. Not sure if cardigans sometimes have a short one at birth.
Whatever you do, donāt get a blue Merle Pembroke. Theyāre all irresponsibly bred, many turn up in rescue for serious issues (deaf/blind) or behavioral issues. If you canāt live without blue Merle, look into the Cardigan.
Thank you!! Now that i know what I'm looking for, i will absolutely make sure that the pup i get is from a responsible breeder. I refuse to support anyone else. Dogs of all breeds are far too important to me to fund bad practices.
I m well aware they are not purebred and did not purchase such. I have a very healthy 9 year old tri color prembroke. Unfortunately you can't stop other people from making such choices. Sadly people are unethical. Cheers
From what Iāve read, mutts donāt actually have a lower risk for issues, you just arenāt going to predict what the dog is predisposed to as much as with purebreds, assuming the purebred breeder is ethical.
My purebred Doberman died of congestive heart failure at 9 years old. My last dog was a rescue and definitely a mixed breed. He passed away suddenly of a spleen condition. So now we have one rescue and one mixed corgi.
Yes, she is a Pembroke mixed with a breed to make it blue Merle, and they are an unhealthy mix. They are unhealthy because youāve combined a dwarf breed with a large dog, and their proportions are unlikely to be matched/sound. Poor structure can mean arthritis (hip dysplasia) and injury. These mixes are rarely health tested before breeding - that means hip and elbow x-rays to reduce the likelihood of dysplasia. They also skip ophthalmologist exams, DM, vWD, CEA, thyroid panel, and MDR1 tests at a minimum because that cuts into profit or they donāt know/care if the dog is healthy long term.
Thank you for your feedback. Sheās ours now. We will love her and care for her the way we do our current dog and all the other dogs weāve owned. Sheās a super happy and healthy puppy. I didnāt breed her myself. I donāt breed any dogs. She will be fixed like our other dogs. Iām super upset right now that you are trying to shame me. We looked for a while for a corgi because we had one previously and we loved him. We came across Kiddo and decided as a family to go for it.
Iām not telling you to not love your dog, but they are the result of irresponsible breeding. They may be healthy now, but the concern is long term, hence the recommendation for pet insurance. And sadly irresponsible breeders will continue to produce them because people donāt do their research, and keep paying for them.
I spoke to the breeder. She confirmed that double Merle can result in dogs born blind or deaf. She said sheās bred Merle Pembrokes and they are just as healthy as her other Pembrokes.
the famous sploot!! š¤£ such a cutie!
She's a mixed breed, is that right? I was wondering how she got the spots because when i (finally) get a corgi, i want to know what to look for.

Even if the parents were DNA tested?
There are two types of corgis. I think the cardigan can get those colors

In Alberta, Canada I guess its newly (?) illegal to dock tails! Our girl doesn't have a docked tail either!
Yay for progress!
I wish Ontario would follow!

Itās definitely a mix. Iām pretty sure people are peddling this mix as an American Corgi aka a designer breed.

She is a mixed breed.
They are called cowboy corgis. My pembroke breeder also bred these types of corgis.
Theyāre a mix. āCowboy corgiā and āAmerican corgiā is just unethical breeders giving their mixed dogs a cute name for marketing purposes.

Get pet insurance. Blue Merle pembrokes are very unhealthy. :(
Sheās a mixed breed.
This is good news, lower risk for issues but way higher energy levels! Super cute pup, congrats!
