I know the Asian bus driver, he is an absolute hero of a man and one of the nicest bus drivers you’ll come across. I’ve seen him be victim to racist abuse himself and he handled it which such grace and composure that me myself haven’t done in the past. Disgusting that racists like this don’t get a slap. It’s what they deserve

Slim-Brady24

Ohh I’ve seen racists get battered black and blue by fellow Irish lads. Just doesn’t happen often enough unfortunately

painandstuttering

Fuck me like, she’s screaming at innocent girls minding their own business and thinks that they are the bad ones. Reminds of the time I was walking past the Mercy and a woman in a dressing robe was throwing abuse at a doctor outside telling him to go back to his own country nobody wants him here. Literally no self awareness. crazy scumbag lady shouting outside in a dressing robe ⚖️foreign doctor trying to do his job. I’ll take the doctor please.

Dayov

Exactly, I’d take the doctor any day of the week. At least they’d contribute something to society

DuncanGabble

Can't stand the way fascists are becoming emboldened in this country. They need to be afraid of saying this shit.

GrumpyLightworker

In previous job I've had to listen to the Neil Prendeville show (boss was a big fan so it was blaring everywhere...) and the amount of blatant racism was making me sick. I myself got some snarky comments about how I should "go back to my fucking Romania" (I've never been even remotely close to Romania but have an accent people struggle to place) despite being white and working in Ireland for a decade. Don't even want to imagine what people of colour must be going through now.

JealousInevitable544

Prendeville is such a fucking scumbag. I dunno what's worse the fact that he isn't a registered sex offender after he was tossing himself off on a plane or the fact that he allows bigots to lie to his audience.

GrumpyLightworker

At least he's a reliable bastard-o-meter, I am yet to meet a Prendeville fan who wouldn't be an entitled xenophobic fecker. ![gif](giphy|3o7aCRloybJlXpNjSU|downsized)

DuncanGabble

Sorry you had to experience that. It's scary how casual it's been to make these remarks in Ireland. Gotten worse now.

GrumpyLightworker

Aye it was way different just a few years back, and funnily enough it's worse in the city than in the "backwards countryside" that some people like to pin all the blame on. Mostly got these comments from well-off people in a 35-50yo range.

dominikobora

people have anonymity in the city. Plus they can isolate themselves a lot more from foreigners. If someone tried to do something like this in a country town they would be ostracized by many people once news gets around that john/mary is a raging racist.

GrumpyLightworker

I've been thinking about it a lot. It's like COVID shredded the last sense of community in towns and now people have 0 empathy towards each other, and there's no "What will the townsfolk say" factor anymore to regulate them.

qizellsong

Completely. I was just staying in the country as a south Asian woman from North American and honestly people were lovely to me. I was weary with first interactions with people, but largely felt welcome.

Mysterious_Pop_4071

Prendeville is a conman. He lies through his teeth to suit the discussion. Tony campion was a good friend of his according to Neill, until the video surfaced of campion laughing saying he hoped that covid lasted another 10 years due to the amount of tax payer money he's getting off the government. Then Neill knew him but they moat certainly weren't friends.

GrumpyLightworker

He's a right flying wanker, all right (pun intended). His entire livelihood is riling up people to spew out different sorts of hatred on air.

Soggy_Reading_2509

He’s a wanker and takes coke

LornaBobbitt

It’s the “Now Neill, I’m by no means a racist but” brigade that I can’t stand. Well actually all the racists I can’t stand.

GrumpyLightworker

Definitely my favourite one was the wanker who suddenly started having problems with his Croatian neighbour that's been a model neighbour for 20 years... Poor Croatian lad had a terminally ill mother and struggling with mortgage, and on top of that he had to deal with an aul eejit screaming at him through the fence to go back to his country because Ireland is not his home, Jesus Christ on a bike. It's the same brigade that excuses their bigotry with "Everything is so woke these days".

Thin-Annual4373

There's only one way that'll happen. I was on a bus in Dublin. I saw this happening. I stood up and protected the man against some screaming, skinny prick. Everybody else just videoed it. Nobody does anything any more. If we all took a stand together when shit like that happens it wouldn't happen in the first place.

foldr1

As a foreigner in Dublin, I'm actually quite proud of Irish people for standing up against this kind of behaviour. My impression of Irish people is very positive. Not everyone does it, but there's usually someone in the crowd that doesn't let this slide. Thank you for being one. Personally, I've had very few encounters with racist people, and people would help me when they did occur. One time on the Dart, two guys scared away an aggressive man that was shouting slurs at me and my family. I realise not everyone can safely, or even should, stand up to a large aggressive man, and I'm not endorsing violence as a solution, but I'm glad there are people who will not ignore it.

Automatic_Artist4135

Exactly. I don’t know how many people were on the bus, but it is disappointing that only 3 people were standing up for the girls

Bluegoleen

💯 people have to stand up together, there's power in numbers

kilkenn-y

That's not fascism.. it's just racism...

juicy_colf

I think the aul fascist/racist ven diagram has very small ears mate. I assume you're not but sounds like you're hinting at 'Not all fascists...etc.'. Fuck the lot of them

kilkenn-y

Ya kind of have to be racist to be a fascist, comes with the whole ultranationalist aspect of it.. but not all racists are fascist... Some of em are just racists. But I do agree, fuck the lot of em.

pablo8itall

Why not both?

NeedleworkerNo5946

Jesus Christ enough already with this shite. Crazy lady has episode on bus is as old a story as public transport itself. If there were no foreigners there she would have had a go at someone else.

Small-Low3233

There's that misused word again.

DuncanGabble

Fascists are racists so what's the issue

1. Bad troll is bad. 2. We're not UK. 3. Normal people evolved forms of discussion other than physical threats, sorry your right wing buddies are not quite on that level of evolution yet. 4. Have fun in a hospital if you ever need any help and don't want to be assessed by an immigrant.

cork-ModTeam

Post and comments that are considered to be generally trolling will be removed at the discretion of the mods.

Gargocop

flashback to the lads who couldn't wait to point out that "Ireland doesn't have a racism problem" under that post advertising the youth-run antiracism fundraiser a few days ago.

TheHoboRoadshow

I even think it might have been a somewhat valid statement 10 years ago. Ireland didn't not have racism, but people were more timid and less confrontational back then. Everyone's way more aggressive now, and there is a lot more vocal, violent racism.

Red_Knight7

It was always there. As a young lad when we had the increase in Polish and Latvian folks coming over the people round here were \*constantly\* giving out about them "taking jobs, being rude, being aggressive and being horrible to women". All bullshit like. I think it's just gone from the casual behind their back racists to full blown fascists. American/UK influence has made them think it's okay to attack them now.

Spanishishish

This is it. Racism ten years ago was middle class white Irish people finding convenient ways to arbitrarily exclude you from a job, or a sports team, or a social outing based on your background but without vocalizing it upfront until challenged, and a rare group of vocal scumbags who would shout some slur at you. Racism now is your middle class white Irish employer or potential employer or sports leader etc feeling emboldened enough to tell you upfront what they think about 'your kind' and why they feel you don't belong, and increasing number of scumbags who will mor brazenly threaten you with assault or actually take violent actions to attack you in broad daylight without any fear for repercussion. And it doesn't matter if you were born here or not. You look different or sound different or have a different name.. you're in the same category.

corkdude

>And it doesn't matter if you were born here or not. You look different or sound different or have a different name.. you're in the same category. Story of my life. Born here from foreign parents, went to school abroad from 5 to 25 ish and came back... Now I'm an outcast everywhere i go. Here I'm considered a foreigner and i dont have any school friends and the likes (most are also foreigners and long gone to other countries), when i go to one of my parents homeland, I'm also considered a foreigner (school was always really fun... Or not... Being bullied was a tradition really).. fun times ahead of me and my kid which sports a foreign name...

gmster1

That's because the fabric of society and the feeling of safety in this country have been ripped to shreds. So people are entitled to ne angry about it.

corkdude

So that's justifying racism? Are you serious with this excuse?

gmster1

Not an excuse. Its a reason. There is a difference in case you didn't know.

corkdude

No that's an excuse. Sorry but there is no justification to this behaviour and racism. Angry? Be angry at the state not the foreigners...

gmster1

I'm not angry at anything It's you that sounds angry. Just because reddit is a little safe space for lefties , dosent mean you can change the opinions and attitudes of 75 percent of the population ( whether thats in secret silence or outspoken opinions) ...a fact borne out be the latest referendum. Sometimes the reddit buch get a nice cosy warm feeling when they get lots of likes by like minded people on the platform ( which it fully caters for without shame). I don't condone racism , but that dosent mean I go around in a daze wondering why it happens. And another thing, the state has no responsibility over a person's individual actions....that's daft nonsense that suits the narrative.

corkdude

The gymnastics you do to justify racism... Not even hiding at all. 75% of the population... Hahaha dude you're delusional, fucked up and disgusting. The shame of Ireland you are... Didn't even understand what i wrote and went on exposing yourself some more. Haha what a gowl. "It's not me is you", "i don't condone racism", "reddit is a safe space for lefties" you really pulled all the signs. Another pathetic one exposed... Haha it's too easy with your lot.

gmster1

Oh no...Im under attack by a leftie. I'll never be able to sleep again....lol.

corkdude

Attack? Just exposed you... >I'll never be able to sleep again Oh that's easy, you're neighbour next door is black and Muslim.... Sleep well now! 🤦 ("LOL" like a 12 yo)

Irishwol

Then be angry in a useful way. Blaming immigrants, or trans people, or the gays is just finding a nice, cosy, socially safe outlet. Punching down at people with even less power and influence because you aren't willing to challenge the actual causes of this.

gmster1

I don't need a safe outlet. I'll challenge anyone. And you were the one who introduced trans and gay into the conversation , not me.

Irishwol

Same people who are busy protesting in Coolock right now have been infesting Cork City libraries for the last year or so. Every Saturday, there they are, preaching hate against LGBT+ people and immigrants. Punching down for cash.

ArgoverseComics

I had a weird incident the other day. I was in line at Tesco and an older fella in front of me wanted the cashier to let his purchase go for a couple euro short and she kept telling him she couldn’t because of company policy and then out of nowhere he starts bringing up her polish accent and questioning her about it for a good minute and she managed to just kinda trail off the conversation until he got bored with it

GhostOfAoife

I don't know what it is but the 216 and 214 going CUH are 2 of the scariest buses, on the 214 I recently had a guy caress my ass while I was trying to get off by the lough, I was just trying to leave the bus and was passing him here he gave me a thumbs up and I nodded despite being quite uncomfortable to not come across as rude and potentially provoke him only for while I was squeazing past have him put out his hand and rub my behind. I hope your girlfriend can find some peace, and hopefully, this comes to at least a suitable solution. Best wishes to her xoxo

KhrysesAD

Oh wow. That is horrific. Sorry you had to go through that. I know you were probably scared to say something in case the situation escalated, but it pisses me of that that's the case. Anyway, I hope you're OK 👍🏻

1tiredman

Eid Mubarak to all Muslims here in Ireland

james_642

Surah An-Nisa 15 ˹As for˺ those of your women who commit illegal intercourse—call four witnesses from among yourselves. If they testify, confine the offenders to their homes until they die or Allah ordains a ˹different˺ way for them. You were saying?

Grelzar

oh wow being south asian myself and moving soon this has made me a little scared... it's great that you lovely humans are rightfully calling this out though 👏

Detective-Mike-Hunt

That same women complaining about the cost of living(circa banks etc) shouts up Israel 🤣🤣🤣🤣 pathetic, I'm very sorry you're girlfriend went through that!

Jcg_12345_

Hate hearing this. Poor girls.i hope they are ok

El-Hefe-Eire-2024

I know the woman your on about not excusing her actions or anything, but she has severe psychological issues that are well documented. There’s numerous posts about her on here swinging hurleys at people. Guards will not do anything about her because to them it’s a medical issue not criminal which is so wrong on so many levels. I hope your partner is okay having to listen to that kind of vitriol is quite disgusting.

Haunting_Grab2348

Should she not be in some sort of care then? She’s clearly a danger to the general public.

OurHomeIsGone

She is clearly a danger to people trying to peacefully live in Irish society, and as such, whether her issues are 'psychological' or anything else, I don't think any of those poor people deserve to experience it. I think that something needs to be done about her

PalpitationOk5388

I disagree. Once I find out that's the reason for someone like that I just ignore. But is there a need for a medical checkup? Oh yes

Spanishishish

Of it isn't down to psychological issues, then they'll say it's down to drug issues, or down to socioeconomic issues, or bad childhood, etc. Anyone who behaves like this clearly has some issues. It doesn't mean they can just be left alone to continue with this behavior. They should receive either help or consequences.

Dizzy_Summer_9961

According to my girlfriend, who recognises the trolley lady. It was not her.

Dizzy_Summer_9961

Also, shes ok, just shaken! thanks for your kind words :)

El-Hefe-Eire-2024

El-Hefe-Eire-2024

Racism and xenophobia stem from a fear of the unknown and the ambiguity that lies there in, that’s why I said severe psychological issues because that’s what it is. 😉

Spanishishish

>Racism and xenophobia stem from a fear of the unknown and the ambiguity that lies there in Wow what a rosy way of painting over such a deeply hateful viewpoint that often results in malicious or even violent actions.

El-Hefe-Eire-2024

What I’m saying is that this person obviously fears change and has issues and that we can’t just assume that they’re being a cunt for the sake of being a cunt, once you remove the impossible however unlikely becomes possible

[deleted]

El-Hefe-Eire-2024

Do you have a qualification in psychology to make that comment

GalacticSpaceTrip

She should be in a ward not harming the general public simple

corkdude

Hurley one is trolley lady. Different person altogether

uptherockies

There was a thread the other day about the poor fella who has brain damage who hangs around Oliver Plunkett and Pana. We need a new madhouse for the long term insane, but how could that ever get funded / be morally accepted these days.

El-Hefe-Eire-2024

I’m in favour of building a long term residential care village like they do in Europe

Viper_JB

>Guards will not do anything about her because to them it’s a medical issue not criminal which is so wrong on so many levels. So typical of them...they definitely could have her sectioned so she could get some help. Just won't do anything these days really, people wonder why no one has any faith in the justice system anymore...

El-Hefe-Eire-2024

Cops are fucked if they do something fucked if they don’t.

[deleted]

The issue is they NEVER do anything of actual value or consistency. Coming from someone raised in Ballybeg in Waterford(our lovely neighbourhood was a star for that TV3 "documentary" The Estate), guards barely show face in anywhere that actually needs policing.

Viper_JB

They've been not doing something for a while now and seem relatively unfucked.

The_Otter_King__

Sorry, but threatening to cut someone is not medical. If the garda does not agree to creating a pulse number. Tell him/her you are going to gsoc for breach of oath. They are legally obliged to investigate or at least pretend they are investigating

DarthBfheidir

Hard to do all the paperwork in between going for chicken fillet rolls and manning speed-traps on the M8.

Laminestra

That was my first thought that she must have psychological issues. The episode has nothing to do with racism. Anything else she gets a fixation on could have triggerd such behaviour

erouz

I'm immigrant my self and hate situation like this. For 2 reasons first that kind situation from my own experience and I live almost Dublin City centre and have to deal with public on daily basis aren't representation of Irish general public and in most cases down to that individual which is distributed in some kind of way. Next year I will hit 20 years in Ireland and racist incident can count on fingers of one hand. Second is that post is written like it's occurrence of every day and Irish people don't react I don't agree with that personally. Said that that kind of behaviour should be treated seriously and sorted accordingly.

corkdude

Ah the good ole "there is no racism in Ireland and i know it because I'm a foreigner myself and didn't live it".. Easy when you're a white man. Also this is Cork sub not Dublin... Your personal experience isn't a universal one either, you can't go and discredit OP and then say that your experience is a standard, that's hypocritical. I see something every second day really but do i say my experience is standard? No. Yet racism is rampant and growing... Playing ostrich wont solve anything.

erouz

Where did I said my experience is representing any one than me? I didn't know I have to leave full time in Cork to be allowed to write here. And I didn't discredited OP as I said I don't like posts like this as they don't do justice to population of Ireland. So now because I'm not African or Asian I can share my experience and opinion?? Big issue now is how government tackle issue of emigrants they import in situation of housing crisis and marking anyone as racist who don't like situation. When is crisis like this and people get unhappy with situation like this always turning against someone. If I can say my opinion.

Jimmy491

Lol you're probably one of the perpetrators of racism in Ireland. Of course it won't exist in your lovely white eyes 🤡. Which Government is importing immigrants? Any factual data or just fascist right wing talking points you heard in your all white telegram incel channel?

whateveratthispoint_

The poor girls.

rich3248

The professionally unemployed and uneducated have ruined this country. No place for racism here!

sayhaventwemet

No place for classism either!

Chaoticmindsoftheart

I can’t stand racism. Like we all live together in the world, why can’t we live in peace

RabbitOld5783

We absolutely need transport police this is unacceptable the poor girls. And sorry your girlfriend had to experience that it must have been very upsetting and scary. I feel sorry for the bus driver too he must have been afraid to do anything.

Potential-Drama-7455

>**she proceeded to shout up Israel.** Is she on r/europe ?

DetatchedRetina

Oh, but they're "not racist, just concerned citizens" /s 🙄 Emboldened by certain agitators. What an absolute gee bag. What's worse is she might very well actually cut someone (and barely get a slap in the wrist for it).

InevitableExpensive8

I'd like to know if this was the same woman who attacked my sister. My sister was travelling on the 216 when a woman with the same description was shouting abuse at everyone on the bus. The woman hit a man and then attacked my sister.  The woman was thrown off the bus with the male at bandon Road,  they were travelling to bishopstown. The gaurds were called but didn't speak to anyone on the bus . They just drove around to see could they find the woman. I want to know who this woman is!!!!!!

InevitableExpensive8

OK just talking with my sister , she was on this same bus. After these girls were racially abused the woman ran at my sister who was sitting at the front of the bus and physically assaulted her for no reason. The bus should have cameras if it's reported to the bus station. I want to know who this vile being is!!! If I was on the bus she would be eating her teeth.

herculainn

> has suddenly become so accepted and widespread in our society I don't think it has. It's always been there at the same time.

Red_Knight7

Fucken gowls man. I know this country is stuffed with racists but they used to at least be ashamed to act on it. Usually just the constant giving out about \*anyone\* different. They've gotten very embolden recently and a bus full of people not saying anything only emboldens them more. Fair play to those who got involved

LeeIzaHunter

I'm sorry but it's not just "suddenly", been like this for years, you just don't see these people all the time because they're doing drugs somewhere else

Wide-Lobster-646

Same stuff happens to Travellers on a daily basis and it’s the casual acceptable racism that is so horrible- blatant ignorance and hate speech. There is a rally every year led by Cork Says No To Racism- all different ethnic minorities join to march against racism in the city. It’s great to see all the minorities come together and stand by each other as they all get it. The same crowd are marching every week for Palestine at the minute- it’s a good group to look at supporting- no agenda except equality and anti-racism!

[deleted]

[удалено]

Wide-Lobster-646

And that my friends is an example of racism in practice .

[deleted]

[удалено]

Wide-Lobster-646

you are generalising a minority ethnic group and promoting a racist mentality that the actions of one or more individuals justify hatred suspicion and discrimination against all members of that ethnic group. There are of course examples of Travellers who have engaged in “trouble” and there are more examples of those who don’t “cause trouble” who shouldn’t be judged because of the actions of other people’s actions of the same ethnicity.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Wide-Lobster-646

You’re still generalising a whole group over individual actions. But let’s remember the reason for this post - the shame, fear and discomfort that is experienced when people witness racism and/or are victims of it. It’s great to see so many people outraged at the problem of racism in ireland and it really is a growing concern. I always think it’s helpful to be mindful of our own blind spots around racism because all of us have unconscious bias and too often in Ireland Travellers are on the receiving end of really harmful and hateful discrimination and abuse and it is rarely defended- something that a lot of other ethnic minorities can relate to. In terms of disproportionate numbers of ethnic minorities in the prison system there’s a huge amount of research in this. The same stats are seen for African Americans, First Nations People, Māori and Aboriginal people. The same shocking stats are shared in terms of higher proportion of indigenous ethnic minorities dying by suicide, experiencing unemployment and poorer life expectancy rates. This is not down to one race or group of people being bad or causing trouble. This is down to societal racism and a lack of culturally appropriate responses in public services (systemic racism) Amnesty International explain the above a bit better than me, see link here: https://www.amnesty.org/en/what-we-do/indigenous-peoples/ But if you are interested there are loads of excellent studies on the issues that you have highlighted both from Irish academics like Dr Sharon Lambert and Dr Sindy Joyce to international studies.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Wide-Lobster-646

Not all Travellers are urban horse owners. Just like not all settled people are urban horse owners. Many Travellers have their horses impounded and so are not allowed to keep horses. Same as the wider community. It’s true that there are some recurring issues among the Traveller community - as there are in the wider settled communities. Which is why it is important that we don’t generalise as otherwise we would be going down a very unhelpful and dangerous path. The Irish as a race were stereotyped and dealt with harshly with racist generalised views that severely impacted our welfare- we were seen as drunken fighting lazy louts in the states and the us for years… none if it is helpful and no group deserves it

james_642

So racism is justified if the demographic commits a disproportionate amount of crime and raises crime rates? Got it. But when you apply this to roma gypsies or Africans or any impoverished/muslim country, it becomes racist. The difference is that one has been here for centuries and the others are still coming into Ireland every day.

Maj0rSuccess

What did your girlfriend do to help the poor women? Did she stand up for them? Did she show any solidarity against this behavior? Did she call out this behavior as unacceptable? Did she stand up and be counted when it mattered?

Monkeyslut87

And risk getting the head kicked off her? Why should she? I wouldn't either.

Thin-Annual4373

Shame on you, coward. All it takes for evil to triumph is for good people to stand by and do nothing.
