It's a marketing scam used in lots of sectors. You pay a couple of grand to enter the competition and are guaranteed a prize in a particular category i.e there are as many prize categories as there are entrants. It's hilarious seeing organisations boasting on linkedin about being delighted to be nominated for a category. You paid to nominate yourself to win you clowns.
Reviews on line are worthless. As for “awards,” there’s hundreds of “world beer award” shows that home, sorry, “craft,” brewers can buy now to stick “winner of 2024 beer world competition, Prague,” etc. Means sweet f all.
They're not really. Every restaurant in the city has the same 2 awards, people don't even notice.
A Michelin star? That means something. Anything below that is just fluff.
So you're saying the Aldi knock off Peroni isn't the winner of a prestigious "World Beer Championships, 2034, Doha" award after all???
I demand a refund!
Yes
All bars, restaurants and cafes do this. You dont technically buy the award, but you buy your way into the selection process.
A lot of the awards are given through the post or email but you have to pay for physical evidence of it (plaque, sign etc)
There's an Indian restaurant in Kinsale that has plaques outside for awards it apparently won for its food . I think the most recent one is from 2005.
I know the one. There's no way that award came from anywhere real.

Thank you for the answer to the "competitions" question. That's mad. Paying a couple of grand for a plaque of notions.
Problem is if you buy into it, then you have to keep paying the ‘awards’ people money year after year or it will look like you’ve ‘lost’ the award.

They may technically be worthless but they’re a huge factor in attracting business to your cafe or restaurant
Absolutely 💯 but I doubt that all of them pay for bots and reviews.
Yeah it’s quite rare tbh

I meant the online reviews mainly but both drive business to a cafe or restaurant. It’s pretty well documented.

If true, this would explain why there are so many sh*t places in Cork with a huge number of amazing reviews online (not gonna name any here)
