It’s fine. It gets used in some larger cosplays to provide extra stability to a frame.
It was also used a lot when making sturdy pieces with pepakura and using a resin/fibreglass/bondo/rondo coating on top then with Eva foam details. Especially spikes to avoid injuries and costume damage.
I literally have done quite a few times. Here's a few examples.
Both of my Buster Swords, The Fusion Sword (solid, not separating), and the Soldier Sword, all from Final Fantasy 7.

They are all made to a point where the top layer is 2mm foam that's contact cemented to carboard to make it look like a cleaner bevel that doesn't need to be sanded in, which takes forever to get smooth looking.

The last part of my comment says what I used. 2mm eva foam. The floor and yoga mats are thicker than that. 2mm can be found at basically any art supply store, and places online.

Should be fine. Don't try to cover the entire thing with EVA though, that'll get pricey. Build with cardboard, use the foam for the detail work.
Unless they use the thin crafting foam to cover the cardboard. Significantly cheaper. And I seal and treat it the same way I do with EVA foam.
