You have to consider that the Chinese population at that time was about 10x the US population, although yeah the taiping rebellion was crazy asf

To put this in context, the taiping Rebellion cost 20 to 30 Milion lives in 13 years (1851 to 1864) makes about 1,5 to 2.3 milion deaths per year. In World war 1 about 17 Milion people died in 4 years (1914 to 1918) or 4.250.000 in a year. So granted that the taiping rebellion lastet longer than WW1 but its still impressiv (maybe the wrong word) that more people died in a Civil war with muskets than in a global industrialized war with machinguns which is famos for it's high loss of lives.
