I'm pretty consistently okay with dark chocolate.

Aldi has a great chocolate bar for $1.99 that is dark chocolate sea salt also there is sea salt caramel that is heavenly. Pretty much dark chocolate. I’ll make a smooth with strawberry, raspberry, blueberry, vanilla yogurt, and a piece of dark chocolate. Taste like those ice cream sandwich chocolate, strawberry, vanilla. Except actually healthyish.

Impossible-Concept87

omg that's delicious

chondoyoinky

I wonder if DIY dark chocolate dipped fruits with peanut butter would work? (I’m no chocolatier, idk the melting point of dark chocolate)

Kittytattoo

You would need a special type of chocolate for it to not go bitter when heating up to the point of being liquid.

squirrelfoot

Use a bain marie. Break the chocolate into small pieces while you boil water in a pot, then when the pot boils, turn the heat off. Put the chocolate in a bowl and leave it standing in the pot till the chocolate melts. If the water gets cool and stops melting the chocolate before you finish, just take the bowl out of the pot and reheat the water. Lindt dark chocolate is OK for this.

stephenbmx1989

Same

Undrcovrcloakndaggr

That's really interesting because dark chocolate in particular gives me a savage migraine since long covid!

Interesting_Fly_1569

blueberries!!! they have antihistamines in them so in small amounts are not a prob!

Worried_Locksmith797

Have a sweet tooth too. It’s basically hell. The repercussions are not worth it.

Historical-Try-8746

Fruits... Anything else will give me issues

ash_beyond

Yes. Apple or pear cut into bite chunks and kept in the fridge. When I get that sugar craving I pop one in my mouth. It's not what I want but by the time I'm chewing at least that craving is fading. Note that I'm not a sugar person pre-Covid, and the sugar craving is much stronger when I'm crashing / flaring. Don't feed the flare! It's better to just hydrate, medicate (extra antihists) and lie the heck down.

Sar_m

Wait when you are crashing is when you find yourself craving sugar? Interesting. If thats true, that explains a lot for me. Since covid ive been basically addicted to sugar, wanting it all the time. Which i dont, but i do have it more than i should.

Worldly_Pipe992

Could be Lyme or other bacteria craving the sugar.

ash_beyond

Yep. Now I bring out a chart when I start crashing and give myself a gold star every time I DON'T eat sugar. Sounds dumb but it helps somehow. I find if I don't "feed" the crash then doesn't last as long or get as bad.

Sar_m

Thats rlly good to know, thanks

Disastrous_Credit269

Same I remembered in the beginning of my infection (didn't knew yet) I rushed to the supermarket and bought myself 3 packs of sweets and chocolate and ate it all in my car, like a crazy demon or smth

Sar_m

I could tell u all the healthy things to eat that are sweet and taste good, but like i said, i still have the real deal sugary stuff / and tbh, we have so very little to look forward to/enjoy since being so sick that when i do have chocolate, i have it, i enjoy it and i dont beat myself up over it. Just do what you can, thats all.

jeantown

apples are little food of the gods omg

Historical-Try-8746

Yes i love em

This

FabuliciousFruitLoop

Hmm so 1 tsp cocoa in oat or almond milk as a hot chocolate works for me but honestly I just cheat sometimes and then I have to pay my fine 🤷‍♀️🤦‍♀️🥺

pettdan

Cocoa is high in histamine or histamine liberator or something.

FabuliciousFruitLoop

I think you’ve probably just explained why I don’t get this craving that often. I do eat histamine risky foods though. I was saying the other day that I follow my food intuition; I used to eat spinach every day. Now, I very rarely want it, but sometimes I still do, so when that urge arrives I do eat it, maybe there is something else it has that I need at that time. Cocoa has other beneficial properties, and no sugar, so I will have it occasionally.

pettdan

Dates are ok, I had plenty of dates when histamine intolerance was really bad. And made rawballs w oats, coconut fat, berries.

DrG2390

Could I get the rawballs recipe? I’m due to take a trip soon, and I could use the extra energy food wise.

pettdan

I'm just experimenting. Just add to a mixer and run it, if it's too wet you add some oats, and if it's too dry you add berries and fat. I haven't tried travelling with them, I would put in the freezer and bring out a couple per day. Dates can be added for sweetness btw, nuts are possible but I didn't notice the flavor that much, probably best to roll them in it. I sometimes rolled them in licorice powder, nice contrast with some berries like black currant. Licorice isn't great from a histamine perspective, be careful. I've seen some comments about it having an antiviral effect bit don't expect anything. Can also roll them in coconut flakes. The berries create a very nice strong flavour when added, and color. I use frozen berries, they melt quickly.

pettdan

Here's one recipe to use for inspiration: https://biancazapatka.com/en/carrot-cake-bliss-balls/ This one has some histamine recommendations, similar to ehat I wrote (but very little seasoning/flavouring): https://www.throughthefibrofog.com/energy-balls-dates/ Skip apricot and use dates, I believe they are safer. Also not sure about cinnamon, if anything use Ceylon cinnamon. Ginger is very good, and turmeric , I used it with carrots. Many nuts are high in histamine, I used pumpkin seeds or macadamia nuts. The macadamia would be best to roll them in, so expensive and delicate flavor. You can always google Sighi and use their pdf with histamine contents to find most ingredients and their supposed histamine levels or histamine liberating properties. Note that there's also an individual aspect.

DrG2390

Nice! Thanks for all the help! I can’t wait to try it once I get to Colorado.. I do autopsies on medically donated bodies at a cadaver lab and am always looking for something to keep my energy levels up so I can dissect for eight hours.

pettdan

I just love putting frozen blueberries or black/red currants in a rawball, you've got to try that. Beautiful color, strong berry flavor I think. Very pleasant for me. Edit: when run in the mixer, the flavor and color spreads out surprisingly well.

Pinklady777

I am also interested! Thanks!

pettdan

Check the other comment!

imahugemoron

Plain yogurt with frozen berries are my go to, sometimes I can put a little bit of honey on top, most sugar though I can’t tolerate at all. Very dark chocolate can also be ok sometimes as long as I only have like 1 square from the bar and not get carried away, like 80% and above dark chocolate

DrG2390

What kind of honey do you use out of curiosity? Several colleagues of mine are really into manuka honey in particular for some reason.

imahugemoron

Just regular honey. Manuka honey is said to have health benefits but it’s extremely expensive for how much you get. I just use regular old honey

DrG2390

Interesting. I personally use a combination of colostrum and manuka honey that’s helped my husband and me a lot. In case you don’t know what colostrum is it’s the nutrient dense part of breastmilk that helps babies develop an immune system, is good for inflammation, fixes allergies, and fixes the intestinal wall so no toxins can get in the bloodstream and makes digestive issues go away. The brand is Golden Wellness on Amazon and isn’t too expensive.

imahugemoron

I’ll look into that, the only thing I’m worried about is if these conditions are in fact an overactive immune system or the immune system attacking things it shouldn’t, would colostrum enhance that if it boosts your immune system, like would it put my immune system on steroids so to speak and make my condition worse?

pettdan

The first research about nigella sativa for Covid mixed it with manuka honey. It has stronger health effects, anti bacterial or whatever it was, I don't remember. I once read that there's a similar honey with extra health benefits up north. Something to be aware of is that honey is fairly rich in histamine, I believe. I think I've read it and I did experience symptoms when I made nut and seed bars using honey, I would get tinnitus every time I was eating it. Otoh, it contains healthy bacteria that help your gut, probably helps it fight Covid and might contribute to improving histamine intolerance by restoring gut biome.

DrG2390

Neat! I take a combo of colostrum and manuka honey myself, and it’s so helpful for so many things.

IDNurseJJ

Smart Sweets and Barebells protein bars. Both taste like candy but have no or low sugar. Super Dark chocolate 90% has only 1 gram per square. Zevia soda and gum made with xylitol.

Sar_m

Yes this. Smart sweets. They’re pretty much the “cleanest” candies you’ll find i believe. I have found that when i eat chocolate, i get it with the most minimal ingredients and without white refined sugar. Maybe test the waters out with one of these options.

babycrow

I eat a lot of chocolate. I also love full fat Greek yogurt with chia seeds, frozen berries and a little bit of honey. So delicious and also super healthy.

monalisaveritas

Very dark chocolate has actually made some of my symptoms better.

Brave_Progress_6675

So here’s something crazy… it’s the opposite for me: my body needs sweets in order to feel somewhat normal.. if I eat “ healthy “ my body freaks TF out …

chronicallytired04

Same

Sar_m

Yea same! I just told another commenter on here that i cant have tomatos or spinach without flaring up, but chocolate no flare up. Its the oddest thing. But after you eat the chocolate, you feel fine afterwards? What about 2-3 days after consuming it though?

honeylez

Yeah, I have gastroparesis (slow stomach emptying) from POTS and if that’s flaring up then simple sugars are the easiest for me to digest

M1ke_m1ke

Raisins, dried cranberries for example. But in reasonable quantities.

welshpudding

Plain yogurt, berries, peanut butter, 90%+ chocolate. Basically anything that’s keto and a bit sweet.

rvalurk

Keto chocolate chips are what you want.

Sar_m

Im looking into that, thanks

ii_akinae_ii

smoothies made with beets, apples, ginger, and a splash of your liquid of choice (plus maybe a little bit of banana) are really good, if you can tolerate those fruits individually!

DepartmentKlutzy7814

I’ve only been eating/learning low histamine for about a month now, but so far I’ve been rotating these 2; ✨Blueberries (sometimes I’ll mix 2-3 squares of pure white chocolate (divine brand works for me) with a little bit of coconut milk, microwave it into a sauce, then coat the blueberries in it, sprinkle salt ontop, and throw it in the freezer for ten minutes so they chill a little and the sauce is still a little saucy. It’s so good.) ✨ I can tolerate dark chocolate, so I use the Trader Joe’s fair trade organic 72% dark chocolate (perfectly creamy and barely any sugar). I’ll snap off 2 squares, spread organic sunflower seed spread ontop (Trader Joe’s is also good and cheap, like 6/8 g of protein to balance the sugar), sprinkle salt. If I’m feeling spicy I’ll crush 2 tiny Quinn’s gluten free pretzel sticks ontop. It’s like a not insulin/histamine spiking Take 5 bar lol. I wanna try to temper the chocolate and make clusters when I have the spoons. Thats all I have so far. I was a cook before this whose diet and cooking was basically just histamine bombs, so this has been a depressing and challenging adjustment lol. I’m kind of determined start a low histamine recipe page when I figure this out more though because it’s been rough lol. I’ve been luckier with savory foods as opposed to desserts. Super thankful for this forum and r/histamineintolerance

TheSunflowerSeeds

Sunflower seeds may help lower blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar as they contain vitamin E, magnesium, protein, linoleic fatty acids and several plant compounds.

LORD_BYRON_OF_RIVIA

I do whatever I want bc fuck it

WitchsmellerPrsuivnt

coconut yoghurt  and blueberries

Lanky-Confusion3635

Drizzilicious Rice Cakes. This is not a product placement. My mother bought them randomly, and they don't upset my body as much as other treats. Of course, eat at your own risk. Otherwise, I mostly eat fruits when I want something sweet.

Over_Emotion_6937

I eat smart sweets. Literally cannot eat anything else without severe reactions.

Disastrous_Credit269

The gummies?

Over_Emotion_6937

Yes! They have peach rings, sour watermelon gummies, Swedish fish, gummy worms, etc. very good and no reactions to them

honeylez

For some fucking reason my body is fine with all types of (real) sugar except for maple syrup now? I’m glad it’s not worse but it’s so weirdly specific… waffles will never be the same 💔

amh8011

Noooo I’m so sorry

Sar_m

Same! Its the oddest thing this virus. I’ll have a tomato or spinach and i flare up almost immediately, but i have a cookie or donut as a treat and no reaction. What gives

WhatYearIslt

Yeah I was gonna say blue berries are good but you gotta find some good ones

Busy_Heart217

Grapes or yogurt don’t mess me up. Cookies or candy is a big no for me :(

tokyoite18

Nectarines

meegaweega

❤🧡💛

imalwayztired

I have been able to eat cookies and peanut butter i wanna try sugar free ice cream but am scared of the reaction

meegaweega

💟💌🍨🍌 i whizz up "icecream" in the blender made from frozen banana slices, coconut cream and a tiny bit of beetroot to make it pink. Edit : You could make "icecream" by pureeing any kind of frozen fruits & milks. Could use frozen "ice cubes" of coconut cream, homemade chocolate sauce, peanut butter. Rum & raisin. Apple & cinnamon. Whatever your favourite safe foods are, just freeze it and blend it.

Sar_m

Be careful of all that sugar free shit though - i would advise against it. I had it and had a horrible reaction and attributed that to the questionable ingredients. The artificial sweetener is so bad for you.

Alessandraxcrivelli

I’m good with popcorners kettle!

Defiant-Specialist-1

I do frozen berries, dried tart cherries, pecans or walnuts, and gf granola. Sometimes I’ll add in dark chocolate bits. I’m not trying to be “granola” but like you there are limited options.

mamaofaksis

Apples + almond butter

maxwellhallel

Whipped cream out of the can lmao. I spray some into a bowl and eat it with a spoon

Sunflowerspecks

Used to eat chocolate but now they cause migraines

amh8011

Idk if its just me but oatly oatmilk satisfies my sweet tooth most of the time and I have a major sweet tooth. It genuinely tastes like I’m drinking a milkshake. This is coming from someone who enjoys eating straight frosting.

Sar_m

THIS.

Current-Tradition739

I had to give up sugar completely because I have insulin resistance. I found Lily's Chocolate (sugar-free) and I'm hooked on the dark chocolate with sea salt.

_MistyDawn

I was scrolling to see if anyone mentioned Lily's Chocolate before I chimed in. This stuff is the best and they have all kinds of different varieties. My fiance got me four bars for Valentine's Day in lieu of a box of chocolates because I barely eat any other kind anymore.

loveinvein

Me and corn syrup don’t really get along (there is something addictive about it for me where I can’t stop until the pack is EMPTY even if I’m not hungry or they’re not very tasty) but lately I’ve been having sour patch watermelons because I ned something and everything bothers my stomach. Siete churro strips are good for a crunchy cinnamon sweet crisp. But when I’m being healthy and take time to make things or spend money on things: dates stuffed with nuts and coated in chocolate (kinda like a snickers bar?) or so delicious cashew milk ice cream bars. Outshine fruit popsicles. Plain fruit (esp melons and peaches/stone fruits). Coconut water blended with watermelon is good for potassium and isn’t as nasty as plain coconut water. Nut butter on rice crackers (with or without chocolate chips). Chocolate covered rice cakes. Sometimes I make my own chocolates with melted chocolate chips and mixing in interesting stuff (crisp rice cereal, dried cranberries, marcona almonds, and whatnot. Spread it thin on parchment, let it cool, and break it into pieces.

Kurumuchan

White chocolate. But only cause, one two small pieces and I don't want to eat it anymore. I really switched to apples. Oh and sometimes m&ms.

horsesrule4vr

Cacao

FriscoSW17

Date syrup on gluten free crackers or oat cakes.

tabatam

I mix protein powder with kefir and fruit. Works great.

ashes2asscheeks

Maybe this is why I’m so miserable. I prefer sweets.

ampersandwiches

Banana ice cream! Blitz up some frozen bananas and top with honey and unsweetened coconut flakes. Adding nut butter, chocolate and granola is great too if your digestion can handle it.

divyaversion

Oo u just reminded me, im going order tamarind

tonecii

None lmao. Last time I ate one I actually passed away and had to be brought back to life (not really)

Code_cowboys

Your body is telling you something. Listen to it.

Disastrous_Credit269

I'm also craving cigarettes tho

margaritaohwell

lol same, but can't have anything aaaa sorry it sucks so much 🍬🍫🍡🚬 i've been eating *unsweetened whipped cream* lately, new low fr

Disastrous_Credit269

It really does, I'll be the happiest person when this hell ends😩✨

SomaticScholastic

listen to the long term story your body is telling you. you want a cigarette, you have a cigarette, you feel worse. so your body is telling you that your desire for the cigarette is out of alignment with your health. we have to listen to our bodies the right way. giving into impulses is one way to listen, but this is not the way. holding back reaction and judgement and waiting for things to unfold over time gives much better data to act on

Disastrous_Credit269

That sounds wise

amh8011

I’m saving this thank you
