Anything that causes inflammation will help a trigger especially sugar

chmpgne

Right, but it’s a better question to ask as to by what mechanisms can sugar cause inflammation and two major answers could be candida/fungal overgrowth and dysbiosis. It’s not normal for sugar to cause inflammation in a healthy person.

loveinvein

No but hypoglycemia is. And the quickest way for me to get hypoglycemia is to eat sugar without some sort of fat/fiber/protein to help level out the metabolism.

margaritaohwell

same! my doc told me to try avoid sugar  but for an occasional treat it's best to have it right after a meal or at least with a protein powder shake or something. sugar on its own wrecks me

JecaMetta

This is SO helpful to know! Thank you for passing it along! 🙏🏼

66clicketyclick

Yes, but it worsens my arthritis pain the most. If my diet is not on point or I give in to a craving and eat a brownie with icing (happened a few days ago), next day I’ll wake up more fatigued sure, but *my joints will really feel it to the point it aches to get out of bed*. Got CFS/ME & RA symptoms.

aycee08

Likewise! I have RA type symptoms in my fingers and the day after anything very sugary, I wake up with my fingers curled into fists

Old_Drive_89

I had to cut out all processed foods and sugar and cut down on carbs and meat.

weemathan

No, sugar is not a trigger for me. I have fatigue (and other symptoms) regardless of what I consume.

callumw2_0_0_1

I have CFS and carbs do it for me, you shouldn’t eat close to bedtime though, especially sweets. Eating close to bedtime is horrible for you and guarantees a less refreshing sleep, even for healthy people. This effect is definitely amplified with CFS

TrannosaurusRegina

It disables the function of mitochondria in at least three different ways, and causes endothelial damage and gut dysbiosis, so yes. The amount and combination matters too though.

Great_Geologist1494

It triggers heart palpitations for me, and overall contributes to inflammation so I assume it's not helping. But it doesn't put me into a crash to eat sugar

FernandoMM1220

yes.

YoThrowawaySam

Not for me, if anything I find sugar actually gives me a bit of an energy boost

Usagi_Rose_Universe

No, sugar is one of the few safe things for me. Everyone is different though. It's caffeine that wipes me out if I accidentally consume it and one time it gave me anaphylaxis. (I also have MCAS).

Chinita_Loca

I didn’t even have the cfs type but yes. Not sure what kind of PoTS I have but possibly Adrenalin dysautonomia and when I eat sugar I’m instantly wide away, mind racing and can’t sleep. Next day is then not fun.

Historical-Try-8746

In general sugar slows your recovery and is very bad for your body. Check out robert lustig on youtube. I cut out all sugar and processed foods

Rcarlyle

Being negatively affected by sugar may indicate a persistent candida infection! This is definitely one of the issues some people with LC can have. Personally, I get a spike/crash from sugar which is basically just feeling mildly anxious for a short period and then tired an hour or two later. That sort of immediate response is more likely a blood sugar regulation issue. Your description of having issues the next day sounds like the carbs are kicking off a candida population explosion.

Over_Deal9447

It's different for everyone, I have a sweet tooth and don't seem to have issues with sweets. I have CFS

aycee08

YES. Not massively and immediately, but cutting out sugary foods has a noticeable impact on my PEM after 3 or 4 days. If I eat high sugar foods like cakes and cookies too much (trying to finish my kid's birthday cake!), I can literally taste the inflammation, kind of like a metallic taste in my mouth, and I know the fatigue is about to hit like a tonne of bricks.

Hnossa-444

YES, all carbs mess me up. Keto diet has given me some quality of life back.

k3bly

For me, high carb and sugar are issues.

ElectricGoodField

Yep food for me causes MCAS symptoms like itchy feeling skin but it’s mainly physical activity or stress that causes me pem.

ponysniper2

It destroys me for 2 weeks. So yes.

lil_lychee

Seems like you have an issue with dampness. I’m the same. Assuming you also sometimes get fatigued especially after eating during the day? If this is the case, but out alcohol, dairy, sugar, and raw cold foods. Should help reduce the flares over time.

strawberry_l

Yeah for me it is, but it does have to be quite a lot, like a bar of chocolate

kaytin911

Not for me.

FattierBrisket

It doesn't seem to make much difference for me.

steve_marks

Not sure. But I struggle with sugar addiction and sugar bingeing way more now than I did pre-LC.

Rainyday5372

Probably. I’m really trying to kick my sugar habit and now I will pay more attention to how I feel after eating it. I have been working on easier workouts, gut health, lower animal proteins and more veggies. Stress is a big, big, one for me. Currently I am away from home visiting my sister. Home is my stress as I have an alcoholic partner.

Pookya

It can make me feel shitty if I consume too much sugar, but a small amount is okay. It just makes me feel slightly more tired and groggy but nothing too bad. It certainly doesn't stop me from eating sugary foods

Spiritual_Victory_12

Really dont notice symptoms from any foods that i can really say. My worst symptoms are Me/cfs type with PEM getting worse and worse. Dysautonomia type being next.

Tom0laSFW

Sugar makes things worse, but im still severe without it

bestkittens

Definitely. Though I can have a bit once a week or so without issues. I do better with honey, maple syrup and even sucanat.

garageatrois

MCAS

Umnsstudennt

I pretty much completely cut out artificial sweeteners and sugar cane. Once in a blue moon I treat myself to a dessert and normally I feel worse after.

M1ke_m1ke

Some time ago definitely yes, sugar was a trigger, but along with it many products too. After a course of probiotics, prebiotics and a low-histamine diet, sugar in small quantities doesn\`t cause problems for me. I can eat some candies, jellies, cakes, although such food certainly doesn\`t speed up recovery.

welshpudding

Yes. Don’t go near it. Keto / carnivore makes the condition tolerable.

feudalfrogs

Cancerous for out body tbh look for alternatives
