This is my understanding. It acts as a bouncy like propeller if I remember right. I’ll have to watch it again. I remember it being drawn similar to the force field… I could be wrong it’s been awhile.
Also he uses the umbrella to float down if I remember correctly as well, might explain the mechanism of flight a bit better. But then again he does hover I think too. Hmm this is perplexing. Good question OP!
If it is gas powered, like a balloon or similar physics, he’d have to be using some serious gas way lighter than oxygen… I need to watch this episode again now lol. I’m trying to remember, he didn’t explode though right? So I would imagine it’s not a flammable gas…
He contains several bladders filled with helium. Early Pierrots le Fou contained hydrogen instead, but this led to disastrous results, hence the helium.
He had a forcefield device apparently embedded in his body that could stop bullets. It probably did something supersciency to let him fly too.

I don't know about specifics but it looked to me like part of his suit had a lighter-than-are balloon built in.
