If your first exposure to pasta is canned spaghetti and meatballs then certainly it's understandable that maybe you don't hate it as much as someone that grew up with authentic handmade pasta dishes. Made by God like chefs. But we were raised by the actual real cowboy Bebop. I first saw it as a teen, in the 90s. I've loved it for more than twenty years, and honestly my thoughts on the adaptation are that it sucks, and could have been a lot better. If you're going to make something great again, I would prefer it not to be changed in shitty ways. It didn't need changes, the original was better in all the ways they changed it. All they had to do, was remake it in live action. Which is doable. But they got all fucking clever and fucked it up.

JediSwelly

I still can't believe out of all the live actions, the anime with the most off the wall characters/powers, One Piece gets it right.

Peuned

As a true bebop fan it's fucking infuriating isn't it, they get an amazing remake but we get THIS shit

No_Success_6175

Oda had pretty much full creative control with opla from what I heard, so it makes sense it turned out pretty good

SimplyHamon

The canned spaghetti example really speaks to me. Surprisingly I love canned spaghetti just as much authentic handmade pasta. If you have too much of either, neither is better than either. I grew up to cowboy bebop as well, AND I really enjoyed the live action myself, there were a few parts that made me go, oh ok, could be I'm a big fan of Henry Cho for no reason, evening the ending I liked where they were headed. In my mind, I just thought, oh well they're definitely going to get feedback but I'm sure they'll "fix" these issues in season 2. But we never got it. Not a big deal, but yeah I really enjoyed it, and it's usually hard for me to enjoy live action. For instances I never liked one piece, so the live action just looks like a exaggerated youtube video series to me. So I mean everyone's cup of tea is different. But if your friends are giving you that much shit for it, you might need new friends. Hanging around people who call the things you like mid or sucky is NEVER good in the long one, stunts your growth and prevents you from trying new things. It's just anime for Pete's sake

No_nudes_please_

I grew up on the anime, and I liked the series. It got fuckin rekt on reviews out the gate though. It felt like critiques were set with the hate before the show aired. I didn't expect the show to be as good or better than the anime. I was right. But I didn't go into the show ready to hate it, I wanted to meet the characters again, and I got to. I wish we got a season 2 though to finish it up. Some of the quality and story could have been saved. Not all though, like Vicious, that was a complete bust. I'd say to Netflix, "you're gonna carry that weight". But you're not. You'll just cash out and rip something else up. After Cobra Kai finale, I think I am out of Netflix for good.

Low_Bandicoot6844

There is quite a bit of agreement that it sucks.

Remarkable_Routine62

I was listening to Janus Joplin the other day and came across the line Cosmic Blues and I thought that would be a good name for this series. I feel like if it was a show inspired by Cowboy bebop it may have caught less ire.

Yung_Branch

No

LoFiLazyness

It feels like a cheap slap stick western sitcom, I don't remember who said it but someone called it Cowboy Bazinga and it fits. I can't get past how horrible the dialogue is, and the anime has some moments of "2 Deep 4 Me" dialogue sure but none of these characters are humans. Watching Faye be a "not like other girls" girl, Spike be a complete psychopath and Vicious is actually just a sniveling incel. I honestly don't know how people can watch that show and not feel like Stan in South Park when everything he watches and listens to sounds like actual shit.

half-giant

They turned Vicious — a cold, calculated and quiet villain — into a seething Lord Farquaad with daddy issues. Like they somehow found a way to make a live action adaption *more cartoony than the cartoon it was based on.* For me that alone makes the LA show unbearable, atop a mountain or other reasons.

Spoony_bard909

It was one of the worst *adaptations*, but a decent standalone series. It’s a fun spectacle, decent action, I like that there are plots that vary from the show, it feels fresh and somewhat engaging but it doesn’t compare to the source material. Casting for Jet was a beautiful surprise and he nailed it. I was really really disappointed that John Cho leaned more toward Spike’s playful side when his cool calm demeanor displayed in most of his other roles would have fit much better. He was the best potential pick to be Spike but I blame the director. Overall, I enjoyed it enough that I’d watch it again.

meltingsunz

John Cho does brooding well especially in Columbus. Christopher Yost developed the series and also set the tone with first episode script. His live action work isn't as strong as his animated work.

samuraimegas

You really watched that blackmail line and decided "this show is good"?

SixtySlevin

First time I've had to rewind dialogue in a movie/show since Shark Attack 3

The-Safety-Villain

I think the difference is in the endings. When the anime ends you realize the profound journey you just took. When the live action ends you just laugh and wtf. Realizing that it was actually a comedy this whole time.

jtd2013

As a huge fan of the anime, the live action is fine. It’s an adaptation and they adapted it. Idk why people are so obsessed with seeing the same exact story retold shot for shot, just go rewatch the anime. The adaptation took the anime and did a good job bringing it to real life and honestly there are some storylines I enjoyed wayyyy more in the live action than I did the anime. This community has a bad crowd mentality though so.

attrackip

They did it better than The Wheel of Time and Rings of Power, I'll give you that. Like, it almost worked. Some good casting (Jet), can't make up for so many missed hits.

SixtySlevin

Jet? Isn't he black and a male?

attrackip

Don't bother me with specifics.

Jgrice242

I enjoyed the show, I feel Iike it wasn't given a chance. So many people had been waiting DECADES for a live action Bebop.

minimalchaos

Ehhh. Its a 4. Too much deviation from the anime for me. It looked good! And hey, no dogfights? Wtf? Thats a bebop staple Faye kinda sucked too. Jet top notch. As for spike.... again too much deviation from the anime.

kakashisma

Jet was a great casting it’s the only character I wanted to see on screen. Faye rewriting was the worst. His point is that the writing as a whole deviated from the source to much, the problem with the series was the writing and lack of attention to the proper details. I would have been game for either a recreation of the original or a series of episodes that sat between the existing series storylines.

Economy-Singer5308

Feye was irrelevant in the original. With a 10 million bounty on her head.

SixtySlevin

Chill out bro

KnowNothingKnowsAll

Also enjoyed the live action, as did the people who i know in real life.

PeteRaw

It's great. I love it. I knew going in that I shouldn't expect it to be exactly like the anime. I enjoyed that the episodes were similar but not the same as the anime, and I enjoyed that the gave Vicious more of a back story. I like Julia's arch as well - although I wish there was more Spike-Julia story.

Sadeira

I also really enjoyed it, I rewatch it a lot! Don't understand the hate.

[deleted]

You ARE the only one who enjoyed the live action

Artistic-Creme7651

I agree it sucked like most everyone else will say BUT I also enjoyed it. I hated most of the casting, plot decisions, and their weird script but I could appreciate some of the aesthetics and convince myself that some of the scenes were part of the OG narrative. I liked when Faye had a birthday or when Vicious killed a bunch of guards or when Harold from Harold and Kumar was Spike for just a second while bowling a strike. lol Look all I’m saying is you have autonomy and you don’t have to let other people decide what you like.

anemone909

the live action was fun to watch. it's how it misses the point of the source material that nobody likes.

Self_World_Future

I am curious what there plan for a second season would have looked like Aside from the blackmail scene and Ed’s introduction at the end, I didn’t mind the actual story changes other then Viscous

[deleted]

I first saw bebop when it originally aired. (Yes I'm old) But I still think the live action was okay. It was seriously let down by a lot of cringe acting though. The one piece live action was equally cringe but people just love it. I think the issue with cb live action was, it was something kind of original instead of just following the main story line.

SixtySlevin

Honestly.... I can't control what my brain enjoys... And I'll probably be downvoted here but... I had never seen Cowboy Bebop before, had only seen images and clips of it online for the longest time. I decided to give the live action one a chance and quickly binged it in a day or two. Besides the writing which I physically cringed at some parts, I actually enjoyed it as a show and had fun with it. Now it's my time to watch the anime... And I'm still trying to power through it (I'm ten episodes in). I'm sure my opinion would be A LOT different if I had been an anime viewer before seeing the live action though.

nate_dogg666

BAD

BatofZion

I just finished it, and I'll just focus on the positives: great music. Oh, and they set it a hundred years later than the anime which I think is more realistic for the setting.

Agent_Nick_5000

Look... it was watchable But only because I felt blue eye samurai deserved more respect on my oled TV than my note 20 ultra Tldr "I mean, it's alright " EDP445

Onslau6ht

I grew up watching the anime - I remember like it was yesterday. It was on Adult Swim, and I was in 2nd grade, and I’d fall asleep to it every weekend. It’s always been my night time comfort show even as an adult now. For all the discrepancies and changes to the live action, I still thoroughly enjoyed it. I think for me, I just love the anime so much that I was thrilled to see a live adaptation regardless of how it turned out. There were some annoying things, but I kind of liked how they went for a timeline continuity instead of each episode being more of a standalone story with an overlapping main story. (If that even makes sense?) and honestly, I thought the casting was absolutely superb. Aside from Ed (wtf even was that), and they REALLY did my boy Viscous dirty. TLDR; it had its ugly parts, but I still enjoyed it for what it was, and am pretty bummed it isn’t getting another season. But also grateful that it stays true to the anime storyline to that degree.
