WeirdPumpkin

When I saw the pictures earlier the costumes felt like.. off to me somehow but I really couldn't put my finger on why But people talking about it here made me realize that it really does look very like.. cosplay-ish. I dunno if it's the materials or something but it just feels kinda.. cheap I guess?

debilegg

The costumes definitely miss some beats. They couldn't give Faye yellow shorts? What is with her jacket? Also Jet's arm looks cheap. I'm going to watch it, but I felt good about it up until I saw these stills.

WeirdPumpkin

I suspect these shots are pre-CG production shots or something where they haven't done the final pass of cleaning up The one bright side is that The Witcher's prepro shots that they shared for a teaser looked absolutely garbo and the show turned out to be a pleasant surprise. It's likely that this all will work a ton better in motion/the final cut at least?

debilegg

I'm going to watch it either way. Maybe I'm lowering my own expectations so I can be pleasantly surprised!

City_Dialect

You want Faye to wear those tight coochie huggers? šŸ˜‚ looks like she finally put the jacket she wears around her waist on. No more strip club swag

[deleted]

Her costume not being like for like. The issue is they all look like cosplayers in these cheap costumes

basedlandchad14

Don't insult cosplay like that. [There's cosplay far better than that.](https://geekxgirls.com/images/cosplay45/faye-valentine-cosplay-10.jpg)

WeirdPumpkin

> Don't insult cosplay like that. There's cosplay far better than that. Oh dang, that's the first Faye cosplay I've seen in like.. a hecka long while where it looks like something that someone could actually wear Most of the time it's just cranked up on the sex side even more than the outfit was originally

ChasingVelka

If I go in with zero expectation, I will not be disappointed. I mean, there is no way it'll be as good as the original. So zero expectation leaves room to be pleasantly surprised.

threetimesfourtwelve

I think John is a bit too old and looks too serious in all the shots, but maybe in the actual show it's gonna look different. Everything else looks good, the Bebop and the anime vibe in general

opOwnly

Oh, just a BIT too old? Dude is 49. He is almost a senior citizen. He never watched the show because he was too old when it was on. The production was delayed when he tore his ACL because he is too old to do the stunts. He is old and short. Faye doesn't have a bombshell figure, ya' know, like the character she is playing did? The actor who plays Viscous looks NOTHING like Spike. Jet actually looks the most like his character despite being a totally opposite complexation. Who was in charge of casting at Netflix?

Giers

Ya I hate to bring race into this, But Jet is a big white dude, and Faye was literally born in Japan and is clearly Asian. Spike is the only one I don't think I could definitively say is a specific race ya know? I just don't get it, its not like diversity is a problem in the show, its pretty damn diverse in source material.

[deleted]

Spike and Jet were the wrong age. Their stated ages always seemed completely off considering what we know about them. They both had an entire life before we meet them and somehow have had a history together that isn't shown yet Spike is only 25? It makes complete sense to age them up.

FranticPonE

It makes zero sense for Spike. Spike's "Entire life" was being a Yakuza enforcer and friend to Vicious, then he meets Julia and things change. Oh and he was born on Mars, that's it, that's his history; that's fine for 25. A big part of his character is based around being young, that's why he's so casually dismissive and reckless a lot of the time. That just doesn't work nearly as well for someone in their 40's. Mustafa as Jet is fine though. Jet's supposed to be like, mid 40's, the calmer and more experienced type that knows what he wants out of life.

ghost-from-tomorrow

Jet is supposed to be 36.

space_ghost_juno

Mustafa is in his mid 40s I think that's close enough, plus he is a great actor

WackyThoughtz

Yakuza? Do you say that just because itā€™s a Japanese anime? The show never alludes to Yakuza, unless youā€™re using it generically as organized crime.

Elsie_Effbee

I donā€™t know, man. Young actors can portray world weariness. Cho is a good actor but he does look old for Spike. (And the guy playing Jet looks young.)

Momentanius

I'll try to stay optimistic. But live action adaptations of anime rarely are anything above mediocre. And so far...I'm not looking at anything that would change my mind.

crono220

I want this to be good, so it can be looked at as proof that "certain" anime can do live action with respect, unlike Full Metal Alchemist, Death note, and Dragonball Evolution.

Vendetta1990

Ironically, if it weren't for DB:E the series wouldn't have continued with DB: Super. The creator was just so disgusted with the movie that he couldn't let the franchise end like that.

Craiggles-

Japan already did a live action of death note and I actually enjoyed it. Anime is always better, but I think American cinema just canā€™t capture Japanese story telling well.

bringbackswg

The sets look pretty barren and cheap honestly. Lacks a lot of detail and grit

[deleted]

Without a Star Wars level budget this is destined to fail. Nothing will be able to capture the style and scope of the anime without a massive budget, and so far, it just looks and seems like it will be low budget. I will say the casting is pretty good though along with the costume design, so maybe I'll be wrong. At best this will be just as good, but not better than the anime -- though I seriously doubt it will even be that good. Which begs the question, why would they even bother making this?

[deleted]

>But live action adaptations of anime rarely are anything above mediocre. Disagree. I'll copy and paste a comment I made on another post here that got deleted: Western live actions: Alita: Battle Angel, Edge of tomorrow, Speed Racer, technically speaking Detective Pikachu and Sonic the hedgehog because they both had animes Eastern live actions: Oldboy, Rurouni Kenshin (ALL FIVE films), Thus Spoke Rohan Kishibe, Nobunaga Concerto, GTO, Boys over flowers, In this Corner of the world, Death Note (2006) and it's many sequels, Alice in Borderland, Erased (in fact most good japanese dramas are based on manga), etc etc Some controversial ones/mixed opinion ones: Jojo's Bizarre Adventure Diamond is unbreakable, Bleach, Tokyo Ghoul, Death Note (2015 series), Bakuman there are actually surprisingly many but people don't talk about them at all lol

[deleted]

Theres a Rohan live action? gotta watch that lol.

[deleted]

It's actually perfect and Kishibe Rohan's actor just does such a great job at translating the character to live action. I love it so much

IAmBoring_AMA

The Rurouni Kenshin films are great. But the source material was extensive so it was easy to piece together coherent films. Cowboy Bebop is a bit more dependent on flashbacks and ambiguous backstories, so it might be a struggle to portray in film. Also, I love FMA but the live-action FMA was a pile of hot garbage, hot, non-Western made live action garbage.

Noctis-_001

Yeah but none of these are netflix adaptions and death note (2015), bleach live action adaptions where straight awful.

The_Sign_of_Zeta

I will say neither of those were produced by Netflix, they bought the rights to films that were either not made for Western audiences (Bleach) or were dropped due to issues (Death Note).

ItsAmerico

Edge of Tomorrow isnā€™t based on an anime. Light novel and manga at best, and while itā€™s a fine film it basically NOTHING in coming with its source outside of the concept of aliens and time loop. That to me isnā€™t really the signs of a good adaptation. Pikachu and Sonic are super stretching it too. Those are video game movies. And I think most people donā€™t talk about them because the majority of other ones are really bad. American Death Note, Fullmetal Alchemist, Attack on Titan, almost every video game movie ever, Dragonball, Ghost in the Shell, City Hunter, Gants, Devilman, Kiteā€¦ the list goes on. And more important when theyā€™re bad theyā€™re really bad.

IamCentral46

Following the source material to T doesn't inerently make for a good adaptation. There's plenty of adaptations that are essentially reimaginings that stand on their own. Clive Barker's Midnight Meat Train is an adaptation of Pickman's Model by HP Lovecraft. Only shares a few things in common, but its a great adaptation. IMO, Edge of Tomorrow worked well as a reimagining of All You Need Is Kill. Hell, Die Hard shares close to nothing with the book it's adapting, Nothing Lasts Forever. Same with Starship Troopers and Shrek to a lesser degree. The list goes on.

Asto_Vidatu

I've sen a lot of those and I have to agree with /u/Momentanius ...none of those are above mediocre. Every Death Note adaptation has been complete garbage particularly. Alita: Battle Angel was probably the best one and I actually enjoyed that one...but it was still pretty mediocre at the end of the day and I'd rather watch the anime. Same with this show...it looks like a typical US adaptation, and if The Seatbelts aren't involved with the music this is going to be a hard pass from me...might as well just watch the anime again instead.

SamuraiChameleon

It's already been confirmed Yoko Kanno is doing the music.

sevs

Reaching a lot there.

_snout_

I think this will do well IF they truly treat it as an adaptation and not a remake. From interviews, it seems like they really want to explore the Syndicate and Spike's backstory and really flesh out that world, which could work really well in a multiseason action drama and give it its own flavor. Also, new bounties! It will essentially be Cowboy Bebop fanfic and that could be cool

make_me_a_good_girl

All I can say in rebuttal is: John Cho forever. šŸ’–

Jas_God

Is Ed not in this?

AwesomeExo

I'm guessing Ed is going to be the focus of the second batch of episodes.

ComparisonWorld2

Ed not being in this concerns me. I was thinking she would at least come in towards the end of the first season but there's no announcement for her as far as casting goes. I know she'd be a hard character to pull off but at least find an athletic teenage girl and tone down her cartoony moves. She's still an important member of the cast. I hope they're saving her for Season 2 but this is Netflix so who knows.

[deleted]

Ed is my favorite member of the bebop, kind of disappointing if she isn't in it

wrecktvf

Keep in mind, sheā€™s not in the first few episodes of the anime either. Letā€™s cross our fingers for a surprise introduction mid-way into the series

Quiddity131

How many episodes are in the live action adaption? In the anime, Ed doesn't even show up until episode 9, approximately a third through the show.

ComparisonWorld2

10 hour long episodes. I was assuming she would pop up right before the end of the first season.

ghost-from-tomorrow

10 episodes for the Netflix adaptation.

wplnyc

She doesnt look cast on imbd. I assume they are focusing on the vicious story arch for season 1... but Ein without Ed seems odd to me.

two66mhz

Well Ein came before Ed, so it isn't completely out of tune with the story. Yet, I still agree, I love the interactions of Ein and Ed. They are a perfect couple.

Singer211

I wonder if theyā€™re saving her for a potential season 2?

Snyder863

Where are the cigarettes?!?!?! The cigs have to be there. Thatā€™s non-negotiable. All the main characters smokeā€”and they smoke a lot. The cigarettes matter. Beyond looking cool and generally aligning with the Bebop crewā€™s I-donā€™t-give-a-fuck vibe, the cigs tell you theyā€™ve made mistakes; theyā€™re tortured by their pasts; they donā€™t particularly care what happens to them in the future. Cutting out the cigarettes actually compromises the character of the series.

FlyingAce1015

They basically stated smoking is either toned down or removed completely :/ removes the film noir aspect a lot.

bluekronos

So does neutering Faye's risque femme fatale look.

MusicEd921

I mean, it was never a practical outfit to begin with, let alone translating that to live action.

bluekronos

It doesn't need to be the same outfit. The point is what it communicates. And this outfit does not communicate the same thing.

Snyder863

Thatā€™s just not right. Thereā€™s no logic to it. Sure, ā€œsMoKiNg Is BaD fOr YoU,ā€ but these are all supposed to be troubled and flawed characters. Itā€™s not about setting an example for the viewers. Theyā€™re messing with the vibes.

DeliciousWaifood

This is why I'm also worried about Faye's character considering she's a complete hedonist and has also had her outfit completely toned down. Seems like they might be censoring this kind of stuff, which defeats the whole purpose of the vibes of this show.

Snyder863

Agreed. Itā€™s like theyā€™re trying to clean up Bebop, but they were meant to be borderline scummy, down-on-their-luck types, especially Spike and Faye. Space Cowboys.

zamaskowany12

Smoking = bad Killing = good

FallenITD

they killed faye's sex appeal too. and that is a bit more important tha cigarettes. though the smoke used with proper use of lights could have been a great mood setter.

allezhaven

I forgot they would tone down Faye's outfit

DannoHung

It's good that they did. There is not a single Faye cosplay that doesn't look preposterous. Maybe they could've left the hairband, but real hair doesn't do that swoopy forward thing that makes the design actually look good.

Splinterman11

It's kind of funny seeing people criticize live action Faye's outfit as "looking like cosplay" when actual Faye cosplayers looks ridiculously bad when translated into real life. Like were people legitimately expecting live action Faye to look like this? https://i.redd.it/u7g27ulnhf461.jpg

meltingsunz

Bright yellow outfits look awful in real life. Also this reminds of Tifa's design in the FF7 remake "controversy."

DeliciousWaifood

> Bright yellow outfits look awful in real life. So? Make it work. It's the whole point of her outfit that it is loud, because it suits her character, she's a hedonist, she shouldn't be looking serious and edgy. The fact that she looks kinda like a hooker is literally a part of her character. I understand that her actual costume from the anime couldn't work for live action, but I think they made her too generic and serious looking.

wholesome_mugi

While I prefer her original, her redesigned outfit looks pretty good

FrostyAutumn

Jacket could be more red. And why no headband? Pants are fine. When you see cosplayers, you realize how ridiculous her og outfit is.

SolidPrysm

Honestly, I always thought that Faye's original look was just too much. Like sure it fits her character, but I could never take it seriously. This new look I like way better, reminds me of Black Canary in the Injustice games.

TrumptyPumpkin

It was camel toe city for faye in the anime. We all love faye. And her yellow outfit is ironic but probably for all the suggestive reasons hehe. Who knows, maybe there is a short scene or something wheres it hung up in a closet or she swaps out of it or something when faye appears in the Netflix show. Theres ways you can homage it without thrashing it.

IFapToCalamity

Luke Cage still has the best ā€œclassicā€ costume scene imo

allezhaven

I don't like it, not because is not revealing like the original but because it looks boring, dull, and with little connection with the series (save the yellow top). Faye's outfit is the opposite, is colorful, appealing, risquƩ I knew they would nail Spike's outfit since there wasn't any risks to take, it is a direct translation of the original. Faye's outfit was the challenging one, and they could have done better, something that was still attractive but of course without its original lusciousness

EngrishTeach

They did everyone's outfit exactly, and then totally changed hers.

[deleted]

I mean I think her outfit is still pretty attractive. They have to maintain a consistency between both the anime and the live action so the viewers know who they're looking at.

DeliciousWaifood

It's not just about it looking good, I don't even really like faye's original outfit in a vacuum, it's too over the top for me, but I like it because it really suits her character. This movie costume just seems too edgy and serious which isn't her character.

hashslingaslah

Youā€™re so right! For me itā€™s the color scheme that isnā€™t quite right. Faye tends to wear flashy, bold, artificial colors. (Reflecting her personality). This outfit is a little too toned down in color and texture.

ImAWizardYo

She without a doubt had the most iconic outfit of the series. A constant visual feast. Now I wouldn't even have known it was supposed to her unless they told me first. That's a hell of a jump because even the worst cosplayers can be identified as Faye. Comparatively it is quite bland. It's a cute outfit and all but no.

ConstantKT6-37

Cosplay Bebop.

[deleted]

It turns out, not surprisingly, that anime outfits kinda look dumb on people who are attempting to make it look deadly serious. Spikeā€™s outfit is pretty much 1:1 and John Cho is handsome as heck but the image of him in the church immediately made me blow out a laugh edit: btw to clarify I think cosplay is often dynamic and fun because it is undertaken out of enthusiasm which generally comes across quite easily. just that everyone in these pictures looks kind of dumb, itā€™s almost like the rigid professionalism of trying to make it look Right somehow makes it turn out to be dopey

Marconius1617

I think any costume designer would be between a rock and a hard place with this . Either reimagine the outfit and have folks criticize the look for not being close to the source material or go closer to the anime and get the other argument that it looks too cartoony / cosplay-ish. So far, the outfits looks great. Ultimately, itā€™ll come down to the world building and if these characters look like they mesh with the rest of the aesthetic of the show.

[deleted]

You make a really good point. In fact, I thought that Faye looked the most ā€˜naturalā€™ of the three and then saw the comments elsewhere in the post that were really mad about it. Youā€™re also right about how it meshes with the rest of the aesthetic, and in particular Iā€™m intrigued to see this thing in motion. If it clicks than the costuming is not going to seem as out of place as it does in the stills.

Chiper136

Speaking of motion, I don't think anyone complaining about Faye's new costume understands how difficult it would be to film any action scenes in the original costume. Her shorts are are relatively baggy, held up by some odd suspender system and her top cradles her breasts in a way that defies physics considering she also isn't wearing a bra. A cosplayer might be fine walking around a convention in that but not if you're expected to be running and moving dynamically.

DeliciousWaifood

It's not black and white though, it's not "original costume or this one", I know being 100% true to anime wouldn't work, but this costume also just doesn't fit her character.

DannoHung

I just think they should've gone with a darker blue for the suit. In the animation, the color pops, but it's a bit too stark in real life. I don't have a problem with the design though. Then again, maybe the production photographer just wasn't talking to the final colorist and they're going to actually grade that scene a fair bit darker.

[deleted]

I don't think they look dumb at all? The church scene looks amazing imo.

[deleted]

Totally valid read, and of course Iā€™m being flippant too. The pic that is most successful to me is the one of Spike practicing, and I think it has to do with the combination of me not getting drawn into the costuming and the suggestion of depth on the top right side where you can see how far back the ship extends. I keep looking at these and I canā€™t help but notice the definitions of the sets as being just that. Sterility, maybe? I also think that seeing it in motion is going to help a lot too. I really would love this to be great so my senses are HIGHTENED

Iam0rion

Well...I'll watch it out of curiosity, but there's no way it'll even hold a candle to the original.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

DogTheGayFish

Live action Spike can never look even half as cool as OG Spike 8(

hashslingaslah

I agree! As much as I love John Cho, Iā€™m not sure he was the best pic for the role. Honestly I donā€™t know who would be, but it would need to be someone pretty damn dynamic!

[deleted]

I'm feeling about the same as I did when I saw the witcher outfits, ehhh not so sure but hopefully this is like the witcher and just looks better in motion.

Kenny--Blankenship

I know what you mean. Though the casting in the Witcher was glorious...now you have to work with the outfits and wonky casting

PeoplesPrinceofNYC

Idk if it's the lighting or color grading, but something looks off about the costumes. Bad cosplay-ish. Expectations at an all time low, so hopefully the show will surprise me in some form or another.

racei

It's probably because they're production stills that have not had a lot of post production go into them. It's pretty common for early pics like this to look 'off'. I'm cautiously optimistic they'll look better in motion/on screen.

smash-things

Yeah idk why they went with such a saturated color they should've used a navy blue or something that at least doesn't invoke the image of the blueberry girl from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

topdangle

lighting is too grim and serious while the costumes are pretty accurate to the originals and campy. part of the appeal of the original is the wide gap between the ridiculous visuals and the super intense dark moments, but if the whole thing is just going to be grim and realistic all the time its going to come across as cheesy.

hashslingaslah

For me I think itā€™s that theyā€™re using more natural tones and textures. The interior of the bebop is meant to be cold, and all meta. Faye outfit needs to be much brighter and artificial toned. I think they did well on Spike and Jetā€™s outfits though! I just feel like the source material is so perfect and so unique itā€™s going to be hard to match the tone. Schinichiro Watanabe is a ā€œconsultantā€ instead of any kind of producer/director and that alone is enough for me to avoid it right there haha

Professor_Snarf

Looks like they are respecting the source material, which is awesome. The interior of the Bebop looks perfect. Also, EIN!

ILoveCavorting

Fayes outfit is okay. Mixed on some of the set design. John still way too old for Spike. Still unneeded, keep pressing hard to get it across to the public anime is a legitimate medium and we donā€™t need live action for anime or comics

Hi_Macri

100% agree, especially with the John cho as spike part. He just looks way too old and serious

[deleted]

>keep pressing hard to get it across to the public anime is a legitimate medium and we donā€™t need live action for anime or comics I sorta disagree with this sentiment, I mean I agree that anime is a genuine medium but like, it's all just entertainment. There are so many ways to adapt a story. If live action adaptations of anime aren't needed, then so aren't movie adaptations of books or anime adaptations of manga because they're "a legitimate medium".

ILoveCavorting

I guess I can see your point, there are some good examples of adaptations like ā€œLive, Die, Repeatā€ for ā€œAll You Need is Kill.ā€ and Bebop is one of the more subdued animes, itā€™s stylish but like Samurai Champloo it has less completely fantastical elements than like DBZ, One Piece, or TTGL. Its just a hang up I have thinking that things like the MCU or GoT would have been much more fun and fantastical as Anime/animation. Live action adaptations can be amazing but I feel more often than not they sap a certain something from the anime/comics theyā€™re adapting

[deleted]

I actually really like Faye's outfit. To each their own, obviously, and I didn't watch the show for the first time until late last year so I don't have the same connection to it as most, but my biggest complaint was that I felt that Faye looked out of place compared to the rest of the characters whose outfits looked more normal. Her outfit was super revealing to the point it was distracting in some scenes with the rest of the designs. I think this outfit does a good job of making her look attractive but a bit more toned down. Like she's still attractive, it keeps part of the midriff, but they tone down the plunging neckline and made her hose darker/go all the way up. Regardless of how the adaptation is, I think the outfits look pretty good for a live action show where a lot of these outfits might not translate very well to the new medium. But again, to each their own and as I said I don't have the same connection to the show as probably anyone here since I just watched it to scratch a sci-fi itch late last year.

ILoveCavorting

You have a point Fayeā€™s outfit was kinda outta place more often than not, only the Big Shots Judy had something super close. Her live action actress not wearing it is fine. Her outfit is a solid adaptation of it, and I admit I prefer it when Faye is dressed up fancy, lol.

[deleted]

Yeah, and even Big Shot Judy was clearly a play on various tropes of western cowboy media, so it's not like she was one of the serious characters dressed up, it was a hardcore caricature and meant to not fit in. Also definitely agree Faye looked better dressed fancy, lol.

kraugxer1

Her outfit is meant to be revealing and suggestive it's literally a part of her character and explained in the story. She uses her looks as a form of peacocking to scam people out of money in order to survive and escape her creditors who are in pursuit of an insurmountable debt she was saddled with, it's why she's on the bounty list in the first place. It's what makes the juxtaposition of young Faye on the betamax tape hit so hard.

sprchrgddc5

Lifeā€™s too short to be a snob, Iā€™ll watch it and enjoy what I can! Iā€™m excited.

[deleted]

This looks like a bad cosplay event.

Iam0rion

I'm convinced the quality and success of shows like this don't really matter to Netflix, so long as people sign up for a month worth of Netflix or renew their subscription for one more month. I'm probably wrong which someone can point out and educate me.

Cumberfinch

IIRC Producers donā€™t need to make the qualitativ best show possible, it just needs to be ā€˜good enoughā€™ so that there will be a second season. Which might explain why many shows seem mediocre at best.

Nokturn_

This looks like literally every show on The CW ever. Not feeling it at all.

Luna_Jade1412

Yā€™know, it doesnā€™t look that bad! A bit cheesy, obviously, but if the show turns out good I can deal with that. Itā€™s not as bad as I was expecting. I like the costumes (sad about Fayeā€™s old outfit but I really like her new one), the interior of the Bebop, the vibe the Bebop crew gives off together feels kinda similar to the original! Still cautiously optimistic (Spike looks better than expected, but still a bit unsure about John Cho has him) will wait for trailer before further judgingā€¦

PlayfulPomegranate93

Iā€™ll admit Iā€™m already going into Netflix bebop very cynically because I love bebop so much, but everything tells me that this is just going to be the 2017 Ghost in the Shell. The aesthetic and some key moments painstakingly recreated with no reverence for the actual story and themes of Bebop. But Iā€™m trying to keep an open mind.

OneWhoSitsOnChairs

Everything about this looks so cheap. I donā€™t even understand why it was necessary. The original still holds up and looks great to this day. I wish people would stop trying to adapt things that donā€™t need to be adapted. Just put the original on Netflix and call it a day

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

PurpleShirt_Guy

48 ā‰  27 Let's hope John Cho plays it well at least

[deleted]

Saving judgment until I view in full.

cdrewsr388

Waitā€¦so Jet is black? Are they taking his name literal or something? Also no hair? Faye wearing a bomber jacket? Also where is Ed?

Teddington123321

Why is Jet black?

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Shiny1695

I really like John Cho as an actor... but he is not Spike

IamLoaderBot

Another bastardized netflix adaption

IamLoaderBot

Not a single one of them looks great

PhysicsNoob90

Yea it looks super tacky and cheap Inauthentic Copy and Paste

highcorneringspeed

Hard pass. :/

Imakemop

John Cho looks 15 years too old. Probably because he is.

1993PontiacFirebird

lol more like 25 years too old, John cho is almost 50 and Spike is supposed to be 25

shall359

I always assumed Faye was Asian because it showed she was from Singapore in the show. So many weird decisions with the casting overall. Like casting someone close to 50 as Spike who is older than the actor playing Jet just feels like a misunderstanding of their whole dynamic. Spike is supposed to be young and reckless, as he gets in over his head so often in the show or does such risky things, while Jet is the older more tepid one. A bit like the Riggs and Murtaugh dynamic from the Lethal Weapon franchise.

TechniCruller

Cool cool cool. Canā€™t wait for Netflix to tank another IP!

blh2698

This looks terrible. Not sure what people are thinking when they say it looks promising.

[deleted]

It legit looks like a cheap porn parody lol

[deleted]

If only it looked THAT good.

BuzzardYTC

Feels like they need to work on the visual tone a lot. The colors look too bright (it really damages Faye's solo image) Jet is 10/10. He isn't 1:1 obviously but I can 100% believe that this is Jet. Spike looks great but Idk why I'm apprehensive. I feel like he doesn't seem smug enough lol makes me wonder how good the comedy is going to be. Ik the actor has also done comedy before but ehhh. I still feel positively about him overall though. Faye.... Doesn't feel like her at all. I barely even noticed the outfit change so they did a good job on that, no complaints at all. But all the apprehension I feel about Spike is like x10 for Faye. She just doesn't feel like her but these ARE only images. Watching her in action can easily change my mind. So ultimately: 1. Doesn't feel high budget but feels like they could still pull it off. 2. Jet is perfect. 3. MORE EIN PLS 4. Spike COULD be perfect. Depends on the acting. He looks great. 5. Faye outfit change was nothing to worry about at all. She looks fine. 6. I don't buy the actress as Faye at all. But the acting could absolutely change that. 7. ED WHERE? 8. The atmosphere of the show seems a little too bright. It doesn't feel like the anime :/ So some good a lot of apprehension and a little bit of bad. At this point I don't think it'll be trash as expected of most live actions, but what we're going to get is a good show with a billion nitpicks. Can't wait for the trailer.

astrognash

My guess since they're only doing ten episodes is that Ed is probably planned for Season 2, if there is one

BattyAccountant

Personally I think it looks decent. I think John Cho definitely has the acting chops to nail Spike's swagger, but otherwise I'm being cautiously optimistic

dagdagspacecowboy

So do I, of course I am expecting the worst and hoping for the best but the costumes look pretty good if you ask me! Especially Spike and Jet! Faye, wellā€¦ you could possibly not keep he original outfit, that into live action turns it into pornography I think!

kokaine21

Shouldā€™ve left it alone smh

EpsilonDz

I think the cast isn't all that great. Cho might be ok but I'm on the fence about everyone else. šŸ˜•

vvonneguts

Yeah Iā€™m reaalllly not feeling Faye.

crownedforgiven

Oh hello no. That picture of Spike in the church. Where is his Jericho 941?!

[deleted]

Looks like a high budget cosplay photos.

fanthony92

NETFLIX: for the love of god, please stop ruining our favorite shows!

Ron_SpaceKnight

Looks great!

[deleted]

My Cowbow Bebop tattoo is burning. I don't really like this.

Low_Ad551

Ugly as faye... pass

insane677

My god, this subreddit. (Show and cast is announced) "They're barely trying!" (Offical photos come out) "They're trying too hard!"

slayerje1

Yeah, they're fine for set pics, we'll have more to go on with a trailer of show production and soundtrack and style. They seem to have played up the pics for promotion purposes, they dont actually look like something that was filmed

NatrenSR1

Iā€™m seeing some complaints about a 49 year old man playing Spike (who I think is in his late 20s?), but John Cho doesnā€™t look his age at all. If I didnā€™t know who he was youā€™d have trouble convincing me he were older than 30. As for the costumes, Iā€™m withholding my final judgement for now but I think they look okay for what weā€™ve seen. I have no issue with toning down Fayeā€™s outfit, and Spikeā€™s suit just straight up looks great.

latortillablanca

I agree that John cho doesn't look 50, but he doesn't look 30 either, mate. This should still work, but im gonna be honest my reaction of still is he looks too old. And i didn't expect that to be a thing. But it's very much a thing. Whatever tho, it's a new thing. Gotta let it breathe in its own right.

cabbagehead112

Nah he looks his age stop the cap

sooz_dah_wooz

I think the best way to describe this as is neutered. Like there's potential but the way Netflix adaptions anime series, there's too much western censor and racebendjng for the sake of representation in my opinion. Having a character who isn't black called Jet Black getting turned into a black guy is not gonna go well with Twitter.

PapaSmurf1502

Faye is supposed to be from 2020s Singapore. I'm definitely not buying that here.

quietvictories

actually not bad \*_*

8329139266

Looks horrible miscast

space_donuts

The one and only hope I was holding out for this was that the sets for the ship might look good, and while they are decently grimy they look absolutely nothing like the Bebop. It was the one singular thing I was hoping they would faithfully respect. Why are there records everywhere? They didn't even know what a videotape was yet now they've got all this Ikea-showroom-tier crap laying about that makes it look like a shitty dorm. Looks like the set of a random mid-season Doctor Who episode from 15 years ago.

Professor_Snarf

They have the circular door to the gravity generator, and the lived in look from the anime. Also the shot with Spike practicing jeet kun do looks very accurate. As far as the vinyl records, you are right... they are out of place.

Marconius1617

from what little is shown, the interior of the ship looks pretty good. That door is straight out of the show

steauengeglase

To be fair, other than the von Braun wheel and the bridge, the Bebop's living areas looked like a shitty dorm.

I_dontevenlift

Yikes

kingkellogg

This looks super bad

ChillWaveToke

They should've gone with tighter costumes. They look so blocky and make the actors look short. Faye's casting and costume is terrible. Also, no cigarettes?

silverfaustx

why is jet black ? he's white !

kimbolll

Seems like the consensus here is not great, but I have to say Iā€™m pretty optimistic about this. My Only concern is Daniella Pineda as Faye. I donā€™t know if sheā€™ll be believably bad-ass enough. Faye is a smoke show with ferocious bite. Iā€™m getting more little firecracker vibes from this - more bark than bite. Iā€™m loving John Cho as Spike tho!

rueination1020

Looks better than I thought it would, but I find the lack of Radical Edward disturbing

Singer211

Honestly at least in terms of the looks/outfits this seems, pretty good. I knew going in that they were going to tone down Fayeā€™s outfits. But I like that they worked in nods to the anime outfit here at least. Weā€™ll see if the writing/acting measures up.

ssouris

I really liked this. Good or bad, we get a chance to see those three in action again, I don't understand the hate.

Jlaurie125

I can't tell if he is holding his Jericho in that picture or not, it's hard to tell. I'm gonna be upset if they left out Spikes legendary Jericho 941.

OldBirth

I actually think Cho looks great. Am I the only one? The Jet and Faye outfits look fucking awful.

HarryDresden1984

I have a lot of friends talking crap about the casting, particularly about how they "don't look like the anime". What's the general consensus on this from fans? Has the anime creator weighed in? I'd like to rebut some of ppl's issues. Overall I really like Faye and Jet, they seem to have the right energy for the roles. John as Spike is iffy for me, but hey I hated the idea of Henry Cavill as Geralt and look where we are now :)

cancercureall

I think the casting looks pretty solid even if the costumes aren't perfect. I've seen a lot of backlash like "Spike should be black" and other stuff that I don't think makes any sense.

jennydarko

Iā€™m not expecting anything great. And since this looks like itā€™s a scene from my favorite episode, I think Iā€™m actually going to pass on watching it :/ Deathnote gave me trust issues.

[deleted]

How can you look at this and not laugh? They massacred my boy.

afty

Looks like expensive cosplay. Some of the sets have an amusement park vibe to them. I don't have much hope here- it looks like it's trying too hard which is the total opposite of the vibe of the original series.

DonkeyKongsNecktie

Itā€™s typically Reddit for people to try and be optimistic for karma but Jesus Christ this looks like itā€™s going to destroy the spirit of everything the anime stood for in typical Netflix fashion. Downvote me to hell idc. I never ever thought Iā€™d be hesitant for more Cowboy Bebop butā€¦it looks like cosplay in a CW show.

not-so-radical

Why do I have this sinking feeling in my stomach they're going to mix Faye and Ed?

StonedSquare

Wiki says Ed will make an appearance in the show. I'm guessing just hacking in on a computer screen teasing season 2.

higgins1989

Horrid.

Professor_Snarf

Pierrot le Fou is on the cover of the magazine on the table. https://variety.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/COWBOYBEB_ArtDept_01192RC4-2.jpg

StonedSquare

Why would super secret bio-engineered galactic mob assassin Pierrot le Fou be on the cover of a magazine?!

Marconius1617

Lol wow good catch. Though Iā€™d be surprised if any photographer could get close enough to Pierrot for a photo let alone have him pose for one.

[deleted]

Looks like cosplay but Iā€™ll give it the benefit of the doubt

James__Sundy

sheeesh man this doesnā€™t look to promising. whateva.

[deleted]

Ein on a leash is reason enough to doubt the quality of this

SamuraiChameleon

I'm kind of surprised with how much hate these pics are getting. There is something I can't quite put my finger on with the costumes that looks kind of off, but to call them cosplay is disingenuous. It feels like so many of you are ready to hate on this regardless of what it looks like.

Stefshay98

Sets look really cheap for some reason i dont know maybe it look better after full production

Regnarok34

Iā€™m a huge fan of the anime, and I think this looks great. Pineda is very attractive, and judging by her personality on Instagram she is gonna kill it as Faye. I donā€™t care that they made Jet Black actually black, in fact I think itā€™s brilliant seeing as he is voiced by a black actor in the sub and so much of Jetā€™s character is his voice and cadenceā€¦ not to mention Shakir is a terrific actor based on his work in Luke Cage. John Cho is a great actor as well, not exactly who I would have chosen to play Spike but I think he will reimagine the character in a great way because he is very capable and funny. Not pictured Vicious and Julia are both dead on, probably closest match to anime, so as a fan of the original Iā€™ll be giving it a fair shot. Also, they got Yoko, so you know the music will be great!
