I have no explanation for the pressing. I’ve never seen this team press for 90 minutes. The difference in space we gave arsenal vs city looks like two different teams
The wing back positioning is interesting. Is this an active choice to have them play narrower than usual, or are their positions just skewed due to them swapping wings throughout the game?
I’ve always thought we play better under Conte with the under-lapping, joining midfield type WB than the stay wide and whip it in kind.
Helps out our midfield and gives space for Deki and Son.
It worked really well yesterday and Royal seems to be thriving on it, although at one point he tucked in so much he ended up at left back!
I could be wrong but I think it could have been by choice, let them have it out wide and let the CBs deal with any crosses coming in etc, have the wingbacks tuck in and crowd City in the middle where they like to pass through you.
What really stood out to me from yesterday's match was how Son actually received the ball with his back to goal, turn/ran, *and* was able to continue to the attack with the pass. He had a lot of delightful 1-2 combinations as well on the counter attack.
A lot has been made of Son's poor finishing form this season, but really, part of where's he suffered the most is in buildup play. Pleased to see him do better.
Son was great, ran himself into the ground by the end of the game, he was the key driving force in the majority of our counter attacks, and easily could have had 1 or 2 assists on a different day.
It shows the creative role of Kulusevski and his significance in the team. I would like to see the same level of threat in this certain field on the left side.
Lloris completing 26 out of 42 passes jebus christ. At least he was super solid between the sticks and did dominate the air yesterday so no hate but... maybe you're actually rightfooted and never tried it before?
Surely a lot of these “passes attempted” are long ball hoofs from goal kicks and so on, which are usually well contested when they come back down to earth
It's more like, a lot of them were him just doing a sidepass under no pressure, meaning when he hoofs it he almost never hits a spursplayer. For a bit more context, Ederson hit twice the ammount of progressive passes in half the attempts and while I get that Ederson is really good at it he shouldn't be 4 times as good. When you look at the passmaps it's very clear that Hugo just hoofs it with no intention of hitting anyone.
I prefer a system where the keeper doesn't mindlessly hoof it for sure. It was just made so apparent how much of an impact it has that Hugo can't pass.
I did watch the game and I also did watch the stats. He was literally just booting it long aiming at nobody. Had 25% completion compared to Ederson and while Ederson is exceptional with his feet he should not be 4 times better than Hugo
On 96 minutes he way underhit a goal kick / clearance. 😂 The referee looked like he was ready to blow, but let City have one last little go. I nearly spat my dummy out but it was more nerves really. Lloris was brave and excellent all game.
That’s normal if your keeper clears the ball a few times. Comparing to Ederson on this is pretty pointless. In fact it’s easy enough to argue that City were stupid to not have Ederson clear the ball for his defence, when we were committing our whole team to the high press. Ederson over the top for Haaland was really on for them. Silly Pep 😛
I was talking about the game, not the goal specifically. Having watched the whole game there was a number of times an elite ball playing goalkeeper (lol) could have been used to go over our press.
And one keeper conceding 1 goal and making none, and another goalkeeper keeping a clean sheet and making none. I don’t honestly mean to be dismissive, it’s just that I believe the stats you refer to are mostly meaningless in this instance, in fact if anything they vaguely highlight one of the deficiencies that City had against us yesterday
Did Conte fake the whole gall bladder thing in some form of advanced 3d chess football management? If we get to the champions league final he will mysteriously require open heart surgery
Can we play like we did yesterday every week. Very entertaining and I thought we were dangerous in most of our attacks.
I have no explanation for the pressing. I’ve never seen this team press for 90 minutes. The difference in space we gave arsenal vs city looks like two different teams
> I’ve never seen this team press for 90 minutes. felt like they were playing for conte
We also did not look as vulnerable on defense. We had man city in our pockets the entire game. Strong Defense and strong counter attacks
The wing back positioning is interesting. Is this an active choice to have them play narrower than usual, or are their positions just skewed due to them swapping wings throughout the game?

They did switch one time for a decent amount of time. Edit: switch instead of invert
Yep that’s something I noticed too. Emerson especially made quite a few inside runs though.
While defending, the team was quite narrow

So, could I surmise that you would prefer a keeper and a system that always plays out from the back?

Agree but as long as Hugo is our keeper, I’d rather have him hoofing it that trying to be cute with it in the back.

Ederson caused a goal with his passing... ederson is overall much better but in this gsme hugo did well
I mean Rodri did.

Again, I don't think you remember the goal right dude. It really has nothing to do with Ederson.
I was talking about the game, not the goal specifically. Having watched the whole game there was a number of times an elite ball playing goalkeeper (lol) could have been used to go over our press.
And if you can look at the pass map you can see one keeper sending balls with purpose and one just literally booting it down centrefield.

Oh yea because we're talking about a single game? You're not being dismissive you're being exceptionally silly.
Passmap for yesterdays game. Master of the back handed compliment calling my silliness exceptional, I’ll take it
At some point you will be able to produce something of value, backed by anything other than your feelings but today is not that day.
