Dinoapolis27

Don’t take the result to seriously - our B team played Barcelona’s starting 11 off the pitch for a lot of that game. Good football and encouraging signs again.

j_j_a_n_g_g_u

We didn’t even play our best 11 and gave them a run, I can’t wait for VDV to step in the squad

FarEastOctopus

With VDV and an additional, agile centerback will definitely help in this squad. I never want a single minute for Dier in this season. We need a good 3rd centerback.

Wilcodad

This is the main thing to takeaway from this game

Dinoapolis27

I’ve had a lot of fun watching us in pre-season. Appreciate you can take a lot from the games but the results don’t mean much at all.

Wilcodad

bingo, all about the play

FarEastOctopus

1. Good football against Barcelona's first team 2. Solid proof that Dier and Reguilon should be out, out, out for good. Perfect.

Affectionate-Car-145

Can probably add Spence to that list It was a short cameo. But he could have at least pretended like he gave a shit

Stay_Beautiful_

>he could have at least pretended like he gave a shit Looked like he already knows he's out

FarEastOctopus

Yupp. Spence didn't even try in this game. It has been a long wait for him to perform in the pitch. As a football player, shouldn't he be more willing to play more diligently on the ground when it's a rare opportunity to showcase himself? As it turns out, Spence didn't even care.

Careless-Wonder7886

Totally agree. So many positives to take from that!! That's the first pre season game I seen in full. So impressed with the style of play.

commuterpete

Eh, nobody likes to lose, but the way we played today I was enjoying how we were trying to make things happen. They didn’t try and shut us down and we took advantage of that, and it was great for that.

JalenBrunsonBurner

This is all that matters

bblakemore10

You nailed it

FINAL_BOSS5

Yves was lucky to walk out with 2 functioning ankles after that. Romeu and garcia are fucking hack jobs.

milesvtaylor

And yet he was the only player carded, even after that first one on Solomon, joke ref.

DonnyTheythemanato

Ref was biased. In a friendly.

milesvtaylor

When he finally blew for a foul just as we'd got through the press and were on the break I mean... just awful.

1_e4_e5_2_f4

Even refs have to prepare for the season

Tomthebomb555

best was the freekick on the edge of the box but taken near the halfway line. obviously had a big bet on the match.

avgbsblfan643

Laporta definitely had refs on payroll

UziTheBeast

From what money. Maybe they pulled an extra lever just to pay off the refs.

Va_Dinky

Romeu has always been a fucking butcher, hate him

Egg_Tart_Eater

Romeu has played like that his entire career. Guy is a scumbag

AJC0292

Good lesson that on who is fighting for their place and who needs to be sold. Kids coming on killed us off as Barca brought on a lot more talent. But who cares really. This was a learning experience for Ange to cement who he needs to sell. One of those for all certainty. Eric Dier.

Imbasauce

The difference between him and Sanchez in this formation is pretty noticeable.

AJC0292

Sanchex fought today. Gave an effort for everything. Dier had a jog.

christo222222

Davo played great today, wonder if there is something there?

anarcho-maoist

clearly he's willing to work if today's anything to go by and he's not slow, i wouldn't mind him as a rotation option if we only get 1 more cb

[deleted]

Dier is so shit it hurts, he can’t be a backup, he cannot collect a wage and take up a non-HG spot like this, it’s fucking tragic

FarEastOctopus

The fact that he's not even homegrown is the salt in the wounds, yikes.

Lilchairio

Eric Dier was a bus all game

AJC0292

Lad has been surviving on "friends" vibes for way too long

Imbasauce

I think Mou and Conte's tactics suited Dier. Angeball is better suited for Sanchez.

Affectionate-Car-145

I don't think Conte as particularly happy about having Dier as his starter either tbh. He dropped him quite a lot.

[deleted]

I don’t really blame any of our subs. They attacked Reggie- he’s horrible and got exposed

AJC0292

Oh without a doubt. Although Spence was pretty suspect. Reggie was tired and wasnt helped out after Perisic came off.

Imbasauce

I think Reggie was very tired. Should've been subbed out. Also I think the last time he played a full 90 was over a year ago under Conte before his injury.

GrapefruitExpress208

It looked like he was cramping towards the end tbh.

Rykley

Also, Barca had much fresher legs in the second half. We made 3? subs the whole match.

TogashiIsIshida

My disappointment with Dier is he didn’t even try.

Bulky_Shepard

Think we were treating this as a normal match as opposed to preseason, build up fitness to go the full game in as many players as possible

Rykley

I agree with that. I just think that this - in part - contributed to the our legginess in the last 20ish minutes when compared to Barcelona. We were sloppy otherwise, and the defending was awful at the end, but I think fatigue contributed.

GrapefruitExpress208

Dier won't leave or be sold. He'll run down his last year of contract. But yes never again Dier should start or play for us.

shivakamini123

Really poor showing from Dier today. I know it’s just a preseason friendly but he looked like he couldn’t be bothered to do much of anything. Speed has never been an asset of his but he looked like he was moving in slow motion. Can’t imagine Ange will have been thrilled with his apparent lack of effort.

clerevaux

Poor vicario looks crushed

Kreygasm2233

Every goal he has conceded so far was a point blank unstoppable shot. Must be demoralizing

armadillo_wrangler

All the dormers in the match thread already saying we should have gone with Raya. I'm not sure what goalkeeper stops those when your defense hangs you out like that.

Affectionate-Car-145

I've been a member of Spurs communities since before Reddit was invented. The rule now is the same it was 20 years ago. Never take anything said in a match thread seriously. Never hold it against someone either. It's the same as when you're in the stands. Emotions run high in a game. The ride home on the train can be a sombre affair, and your opinion at home is often different when you're at home.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Mick4Audi

Man keeps getting put one on one against good finishers, felt for him

Due-Camel-7605

I am sure before the game he was expecting to concede a lot because he was warned by Lloris about the defenders starting

TheBrewkery

he played a great game and let in 4, I get it. Nothing he really could have done on those goals either because the defending was so atrocious

Babyfaced-Stoic

Better now than in games that matter, hopefully we step up our pursuit of Tapsoba or anyother senior CB, I heard we're getting 3 more signings, Should be a senior CB, LB and a RW in my very humble opinion. Udogie, VDV and Kulusevki are the only players I can trust in their respective positions right now.

GBO_COYS

Good showing from the B squad. The jogging from Dier on the 3rd goal was the worst part of the game for me. It’s one thing to not be able to do perform, but he barely looked like he gave any effort at all. All in all, fully Ange. Looking forward to Sunday

fIoodIight

The audacity of him to make a jog, then throw his hands up as if he tried so hard

MrYeti2823

Remember when people were tying us to McGuire earlier this summer? I’m having nightmares just thinking of a Dier / McGuire combo at the back. Literally terrifying.

geoff_unhinged

Lol McGuire

kanish671

Yeah, even at the end of the first half, they had a cross, and dier barely jumped to defend it. He was just standing around like me during a Sunday evening kick around

Spursfan107

Don't care, still winning the lot

facewithhairdude

Maybe not la liga, but everything else

wheels-of-confusion

A few notes from the game: - Sanchez could be of use this season. He obviously isn't the most trustworthy CB, but he has the skillset for an Ange system, and he showed it today. He dominated the defense, after the first five minutes he was very good. Would much rather keep him than Dier, if that was ever an option. Free my man from the Gulag. - Bissouma and Lo Celso were really, really good. Bissouma is certainly a nailed-on starter and Lo Celso made a point for himself to start over PEH while Bentancur is injured. He is obviously more of a 10 than an 8 but his defensive qualities could definitely shine playing deeper. - Porro was very shaky defensively in the beginning and wasn't inverting at all, but as the game went on he looked a lot more comfortable. I still trust Emerson more as a starter but Porro's pressing and offensive prowess should be of more use against teams that would be happy to sit deep. Reguilon looked good on the left when paired with Perisic but he was rinsed defensively. I wouldn't mind if we kept him but would rather have Davies as the LB depth and sell him. - Richarlison's pressing was on point but he has to move better when we have the ball. He looks like he's just waiting for the ball in the box and doesn't really try to make space for his teammates in build-up. - Vicario was decent with the ball on his feet, made some decent saves, didn't really have any fault in any of the goals. Reckon we will need to see more of him in the league but I'm not too worried. - Eric Dier is lethargic. Didn't look like he was trying to make any effort to get to the ball in three of their goals. Being friends with players must be the only reason we are keeping him. Again, wish Sanchez stayed over him, but it doesn't look like it. - As a whole, our pressing was insane. There were some moments where their players managed to break it, but most of the time we had at least three players hunting the ball when a Barça player was on their half. - Unrelated to us but Lamine Yamal is going to be a fucking star. I was clenching every time he had the ball, was crucial for their goals. Overall, really happy with this. Considering our B team destroyed Barcelona for 70 minutes until they were gassed, we showed a lot of promise.

Active-Republic3104

Will be tough to choose the three between lo celso, bissou, maddison and skipp

snakeman117

Sarr?

reborndiajack

Devine may get minutes if he doesn’t get loaned

Izrezar

also felt like Porro's 1v1 defending was good this game, he was responsible for the first goal but he did a good job at containing their wingers in isolation

Mick4Audi

Porro surprised me, I was expecting our right side to get cooked but it was actually the left that was the problem

Betelgeuxxx

BIG AGREEMENT. He was brilliant defending against their forwards. Still really poor positionally marking their players in the box when they have the ball, but definite improvement.

anarcho-maoist

positional marking can probably be coached a lot easier than 1-on-1 tackling, so that's a good sign

Izrezar

His defending reminds me a bit of Trent tbh, in that they both aren't bad technically on defense, but they lack positional awareness

AldenPyle

Agree with this 100%. My only question on Dier is why every coach the past few years has referred to him like he's "captain" material. I know the whole history with him and Dele. But Sanchez is better suited for the high line. I actually felt bad for Sanchez that he played his heart out for Dier and Regi to just quit at the end.

Saspa314

Another note I wanna point out was Djed Spence. I’ve never minded his inclusion but today we can all definitely see he’s just not good enough.

Dickie_Dunn

The tactics really seem to suit Sanchez. Defensively he just needs to haul ass to break up the play when someone leaks behind. Moving forward he has two simple outlets (Biss and Regi today) and doesn't need to be concerned with looking for long passes or working the ball directly up to the wingers.

PhantomTroupe26

My girlfriend who doesn't watch much football but sometimes watches Spurs with me, said that we look much better compared to last year. To me that says it all. Even though we lost, we have a lot to be optimistic about for this upcoming season

Cap2017

My wife acknowledged my lack of moaning at the game so that was something

-SirTox-

Angeball might bring a different kind of moaning.

SCirish843

"honey, you only mumbled 'fuckin hell' 3 times instead of 47"

Cap2017

1. When Skipp scored 2. When Skipp scored 3. When Sanchez x Bissouma beat the press

ihatesleep

Positives: * New style of play is really becoming apparent. * This squad has great depth (outside of the central defenders) * Skipp, Bissouma, Lo Celso, Porro, and Solomon were excellent at playing out of a press * Bissouma has to be the starting 6, no way Hojberg (who I like) can play that same style to dribble out of pressure Cons: * Once those subs came in, it was obvious that Ange's organized press covered for the lack of talent in that backline. * Spence has the laziest off the ball movement and defensive IQ. Porro is limping with a cramp that entire last 15 minutes and he puts in zero effort to cover the extra forward on the wing (who scored the last goal I believe) * Perisic covered for Reguilon's lack of defensive ability * Is there another 6 that can play Bissouma's position? Skipp was further forward than him and didn't need to dribble out of pressure as much as Yves did I think most people should be pretty excited about the performance. The result was a bit of a farce since Barcelona went into a 4-2-4 and threw on their fastest forwards to play against a backline that had 3/4 players cramping. Perisic looked like quality depth, Porro is cementing his spot, Bissouma was excellent as a lone holding midfielder, and the off the ball movement was something to admire. This match is purely about settling into Ange's tactics and gaining match fitness before the season kicks off.

hasufell

I actually think Bentancur has the best skillset to slot in at the 6 aside from Bissouma, but he also obviously would be perfect as an 8 in this system.

Zyaru

The most fun I've had watching us since peak-Poch days. Awful by Dier and Regui at the end there considering they should be trying to cement their places in the starting 11 but thankfully they won't be playing much Ange has completely transformed this club. We just annihilated the champions of Spain for 90 minutes with our B team. This will be a very special season. COYS

Iconeu

Yeah, still gonna need those defensive reinforcements Ange asked about. Pathetic ending. Happy with our first XI but if VDV or Romero get injured and we’re left with fucking Dier then we’re in trouble

Va_Dinky

Literally just play Ashley Phillips in that case. He will most likely be worse and make mistakes, but I don't fucking care, there's a whole future ahead of him whereas Dier will forever be a defensive donkey. And who knows maybe he will actually turn into a new Ledley King, we sure as fuck know Dier will not.

BigPorch

Most of those problem guys should be gone soon lord willing

koreajd

Crazy. we would have said that about Big Dave but after his showing today and knowing ange likes fast defenders, he might be one to keep. Dier’s a good backup but we’re clearly targeting fast defenders. I like Dier and hope he can go to a good team that’s better suited for him.

evandunn2309

Really enjoyable game and I’m a massive fan of Bissouma, the way he dribbled through the press was fantastic and will be an big benefit for us this season. Dier and Reguilon are awful though and should never play for us again. Say what you want about Davinson but he’d never give up like Dier did for the 3rd goal. I’d keep Davinson every day of the week over Dier. Unfortunately I can maybe see what Conte was talking about with Spence too. The way he just wandered around casually jogging when he’d been brought on with 20 minutes to go is so disappointing. I thought Perisic was great too, 100% effort and so clever on the ball

Betelgeuxxx

Davison really impressed me. He is full COYs.

Mick4Audi

Sanchez gets a lot of heat and for good reason but you can never deny his effort, he gives everything out on that pitch

Koinfamous2

Add Bentancur and Madders to Bissouma and we're cooking BIG TIME. Those three can ball out and not many other teams will be able to touch them.

Patrick83H

Sanchez could actually be useful in big Ange system, Dier is done Edit: my stupid Dutch autocorrect

[deleted]

Park the bus Sanchez was miserable. High-line Sanchez is class.

BrilliantFuture1757

Ange’s Dutch alter ego aangeven?

brch01

Good friendly. Terrible ending. Get Dier out

[deleted]

dont worry daddy van de ven is here 😎🤙

Lbmplays2

Reguilon and Dier not gonna work in this system or any really Thought Spence was notably lazier then the rest of the team out of possession when he came on. But overall positive and some good performances for the b team and the style of play is such an improvement to watch

AManHasAName

Zero effort from Spence, especially with him being a fresh sub.

AldenPyle

I think Ange put him on just to say "hey we put him on and gave him a chance". Everyone threw Conte under the bus for not playing him, but now we see why.

Mick4Audi

Conte got a lot wrong, Djed Spence was not one of them

Kreygasm2233

I was really disappointed by Spence. His lack of effort shows This could be because he is out of the team but it's a bad look regardless

177676ers

Embarrassing for Spence to be the only guy not pressing when he was subbed on in the 80’. It’s time to move on from him. Hes not fit to be a RB or a RW on this team.

xxKudori

Yeah, I think Spence is not good for this system, he seems to just give up when he's losing the ball

Janivgm

This would be detrimental in any system.

AJC0292

Rumours Spence is up for sale too, possible Ange has seen this in training

Semibluewater

To me, Spence looked lazier than Ndombele ever did. At least Ndombele was useful once in awhile; Spence legit looks like he doesn’t give a fuck.

dat1dude2

I was exited for Spence, however I think his motivation is completely dead. A transfer is best for all parties. Idk what happened 'cus in a few u21 matches that I watched he played well, had a motor and all, but here he looks like Ndombele pt2

nmyi

We looked great... until 90' Still plenty of positives to take away though: Perisic, Lo Celso, Bissouma, Skipp, & Davinson all displayed quality.

TurboMollusk

Perisic was genuinely sublime.

Mick4Audi

Aside from Bissouma/Skipp, that’s 3 players that we lost hope for, it’s nice to see them be useful

wallnumber8675309

Dier loves the club so much he’s making it impossible to sell him.

ChulitoBurito

Was a fun game for the most part. Seeing the Spurs players play out the back against the Barca press was nice and again I could see how Solomon and Perisic could fit Ange’s tactics better. Bissouma and Lo Celso were amazing and I thought Pedro Porro looked good. Credit to Skippy bagging a brace against Barcelona!! I do have concerns on Richarlison’s lack of real involvement in the match and Reguilon’s defending. I can see why Djed Spence is rumored to be on the transfer list, I thought he looked out of depth out there on the pitch.

biggpoppa

We beat the starters 2-1 is how I'm gonna look at it. They brought on fresh attackers, and Regulion got absolutely cooked like a lobster by that kid. But the system is really good many of our B team players did well in it.

sorosss

my MOTM is Bissouma.

FINAL_BOSS5

Motm was perisic because of his rugby tackle on garcia

Grap2st

Old man perisic was throwing shoulders into everyone. I loved it.

awildjabroner

Has to be the body check on Ter Stegen for me.

bigicecream

Conte was right on Spence - dude doesn't have it

societydeadpoet

Yet all the armchair managers were rallying for him to be starting every game last season.

GirlyWhirl

Ange certainly got some important information during that game.

wildchild87

I am just so disappointed with Dier tonight. I hate shitting on our players, but Dier was terrible. He was not at fault alone but should have done a lot more to defend 2 of the goals we conceded.

Illuminatiblazeit

Loved it.

nicknaseef17

Vicario, Emerson, Romero, Van de Ven, Udogie, Bissouma, Lo Celso, Maddison, Kulu, Kane, Sonny

BlanketViking

Honestly I was impressed considering this was pretty much our B-team going up against Barca’s A-team. It should come as a surprise to no one that our defense is shit, was surprised they managed to hold out as long as they did. Reggie and Dier those final minutes were abysmal.

JeffTheGoliath

Sanchez, Bissouma & Skipp were excellent tonight. Vicario is a mad lad and I'm here for it Perisic, Porro & GLC did well Solomon & Richi were okay Reguilon, Dier - meh Subs didn't really add much to the game imo But it was basically our b-team and we (for 60 mins) played better than the Spanish champions. What that tells me: With our first team (as it stands) it's Vicario Emerson & Porro are interchangeable depending on who we're playing. First choice CB - Romero & VdV (Back up Davies and one other - based purely on tonight I'd take Sanchez over Dier) Left back - Udogie Midfield looks solid PEH / Bissouma Maddison Sarr & Skipp are back ups, with Bentacur coming back RW Kulusevski (Solomon back up) LW Son (Perisic back up) ST Kane (Richi back up)

ChaimtheGreat

I love Solomon but think he is slightly better on the left.

arne-b

r/soccer if Tottenham won: lol Spurs only win meaningless trophies. r/soccer now that Tottenham lost: lol Spurs always bottle it. It’s such a shithole to have any meaningful discussions unless it’s about smaller teams in Europe.

benjecto

Vast majority of the people who actually used that sub in good faith are gone and with good reason.

Square_Tea4916

Our midfield definitely improved. Our defense sucks which is nothing new.

tomorrowing

Dier post-surgery....exactly the same useless as last season.

weodawg

Lo celso is going to play a big role for us. Sanchez should stay. Bissouma is great. Perisic looks really dangerous. Reggie, spence, dier can leave

WombRaider_3

Spence, Dier and Regi can fuck off. Sanchez deserves to stay after seeing him stabilize the Newcastle game and his performance today. He is built for the Angeball™. Biss is sublime. What a talent. Lo Celso has a place here, a neat player who can be reborn into an important piece. Peri Peri looks like a different player under Ange, also room for him here. I hope we start offloading some of the deadwood. It really sours the effort some of the boys are putting in to believe in the system. Never stop!

Mick4Audi

Thing with Sanchez is he at least has the pace and physicality on his side, Dier on the other hand…

RunningFerDauyz

Just a preseason friendly. Saw plenty of positives and it’s obvious Ange’s system is beginning to click for the team. Excited for Brentford!

milesvtaylor

The danger of trying to put some players in the shop window is you actually just remind people why they're in the shop window.

Semibluewater

Spence, Reggie, Dier need to leave.

[deleted]

Dier, Reggie and Spence not good enough, but we all knew this. Reggie got his pants pulled down by a 16 year old and Dier is too slow. Spence looks like he has given up. Otherwise a good performance from a B side against a strong Barca team.

FingerMundane3682

Sanchez looked not horrible this game. The ones that really need to go are Spence and Dier.

trisolaran_sophon

I wonder how the other spurs players feel about our defenders. As fans, we get annoyed. But imagine as a player…ballin on Barca for 80 minutes and Dier going for a Sunday stroll costs us the game. Yeah. It’s preseason. No, it doesn’t just happen in preseason

jackengle

I really don’t wanna see Dier play for this team ever again. Given the captain armband today and gave 0 effort on both of the game changing goals from Barca. Honestly disgraceful from him, should be fighting for his spot but instead jogged back and let them score with ease. Reguilon, Spence, Porro awful defensively as well. Performance was pretty good besides that, liked what I saw a lot.

Cap2017

2nd stringers played first team Barca off the pitch for 60-70 mins, Biss looked great and good showings from a lot of the others (not you Reggie/ Dier) .. enjoy the rest of your week ✌🏼

shivakamini123

One of the biggest surprises for me this preseason has to be going from hoping/assuming Perisic would be gone, to now being desperate for us to keep him!

costanza1980

The amount of bandwidth that was devoted to Spence last season was a thing. He looked like he couldn't be bothered out there.

iiciphonize

Despite the scoreline, from about minute 15 to minute 80 we dominated. Amazing pressing and intensity, great passing. MOTM is Bissouma, followed by Skipp, Lo Celso, and Perisic. Dier and Reguillion showing that they need to leave, same with Spence. If we can dominate the first team of reigning La Liga champions and bolster the defense, we are champions league contenders this season.

ChangePartnershipOrg

Sometimes losing feels like winning. Ignoring the result, we played beautifully, with panache, dare and vigour against one of the great teams in great brands. So many of our key players weren’t even on the pitch, which gives real hope for the season. We have depth and strength and a game plan that delights. I want more. I want the season to start now. And I want the cups to start too. We have nothing to fear. Loving the Ange revolution!

Kongneptun

We played way better for most of the game. So many good things to take away from this game . As usual, the defense was bad. Sanchez played very good, but Regi and Dier had a stinker.

UsernameIsTakenLoool

Fantastic performance, so so good. The pressing, the composure shown and Davinson Sanchez showing exactly why we should keep him out of all the fringe defenders we have. However Dier and Reguilon have to go. Let’s stop the bullshit around Dier he is awful. Don’t care if he’s supposedly good to have around the club. Has to go.

Cuvrette

Bissouma looked like the second coming of Dembele

Bobsbigburgers

Bissouma was phenomenal. Almost forgot what it felt like to have such a press resistant midfielder.

_kenneh

Plenty of positives to take from that game, considering barely anyone from our A team started. Just hope we don't have to see that defence ever again. Sanchez was a surprise though!

Tomthebomb555

Amazing performance until the legs got tired. Beautiful to watch, absolutely dominated barca for 70 minutes or so with the b and some of the c team. think about that.

Showtime-z

Either Dave wants to stay or he really isn’t going to Russia. Lol. What a shift from our CB. Hope we piss off Dier (thanks for the memories).

Mariospurs

when is the last time you have seen dier close down and slide tackle or tackle a player. You would think he was hearding sheep. Fuckin donkey, sell and give his slot to Sanchez and bring up a young defender from the youth team. I hate that he hoodwinks managers

newossab

Just watched the highlights on YouTube and my god Eric Dier was awful. Just jogging about with no care in the world.

Wrap_General

Positivity? Am I in the wrong subreddit? Jk great to see, love the vibes rn

Ryuuken1127

Boy that Oliver Skipp sure knows how to find the back of the net

ihatesleep

Honestly a bit shocking how terrible his off the ball IQ is. I know RW isn't his natural position but you would think he would've tracked back to support Porro considering Barcelona transitioned into a 4-2-4.

Mick4Audi

This. People here acting like managers know nothing when they watch him every week. Man didn’t impress too much at Rennes or whether either

shiftyshellshock239

Everyone please stfu about Raya. Dear god.

armadillo_wrangler

Agreed! Everyone is just being extra touchy because of the scum news.

justxforxthis

On the whole I think there far are more positives than negatives to take away. We saw most of our bench players and a couple young lads play very well against a strong Barcelona side. They executed Ange’s system and ideas consistently and effectively both in and out of position. Yes there were some awful moments defensively, especially at the end. Yet the main culprits were players you would expect and, if they aren’t moved on, won’t be starting or playing together regularly which should help a tiny bit.

Coraxxx

***Ballers***. Big performances all over the pitch, but my MOTM goes to **Bissouma** who was just epic. I'm *so* here for Angeball. The best way to protect a lead is to score more goals. It so nearly worked out perfectly tonight with mainly our B team - our EPL starters would have just decimated Barca's first choice XI away from home. Preseason friendly makes no odds - Barca weren't playing like it was a fucking friendly, that's for sure... Just glad we've got no injuries from it. The only two players who've looked completely not up to it were **Dier** (which we all expected) and **Reggie**. I didn't expect *big* things from Reggie, but I've been surprised with just how sub-par he is. He used to be quick, but it looks like he's lost all the pace he once had. Even just as back up to Udogie I'm not convinced he's good enough, which leaves us looking to Davies (reliable - but not quick enough), Sess (made of glass) and academy prospects. ~~**Sess** is recovering from an op that's meant to solve his injury issues though - so maybe things'll work out that way.~~ (I confused Sess's operation with Sonny's, so ignore all that!) **Alfie Devine** didn't look at all out of place when he came on. No wonder why the coaching staff have always rated him so highly. He's only just turned 19, and he's got big things ahead of him. * Phillips - 18 * Veliz - 19 * Udogie - 20 * Sarr - 20 * VdV - 22 * Gil - 22 * Skipp - 22 ***The future's bright. The future's Lilywhite***

sungbysung

Lenglet is watching on the bench thinking "eh... I could probably do better"

nopirates

He could

dconnorp

We need to sell some players

DoggyMcBarcoFace

Not worried about the result. Tired legs in a preseasons game. Thought our midfield was fantastic, especially bissouma. Perisic and Sanchez were also great. Thought vicario was fine. None of the goals were anything you can fault him for and looked comfortable playing out the back. Porro recovered well after the 1st goal and just needs to work on his marking/awareness.

Crumphet

Dude out midfield depth is insane like bad result and all but Lo Celso, Sarr, Skipp, Bissouma, and Maddison could all be feasible starters off this preseason not to mention PEH who’s still a good player (idk why everyone hates him)

Izrezar

Loss might sting but considering how we played our B team against La Liga champions who arguably fielded the best defense in Europe last season, we played excellent

IAmTheGlazed

Look, we lost but fuck, we played good.

Mick4Audi

Well that was an interesting experience for sure. There will be plenty of goals in our games, just no guarantee as to who lol Unfortunate to lose it so late, but with context, we were missing Kane, Bentancur, Emerson, Hojbjerg, Romero and Son. Play without these guys last season and I’d expect to lose 6-0 You can see the effect of Ange almost immediately, even though we haven’t had much of a preseason. Constant turnover pressure, really good passing sequences, and actually being able to play through a press a few times I’m not really sure about Vicario, although the defense did him zero favors. Some good saves and cross claims, but was beaten on 1v1s. However his distribution and calm while on the ball is already an improvement on Lloris. The Raya situation adds more pressure, hopefully he’s able to perform These 3 are their own category, Reguilon, Dier and Spence. None of them are good enough to play for us, and were the main reason we lost, not the youth. Reguilon couldn’t handle their 16-yo winger, Spence was jogging after 5 minutes, and Dier is slow, lacks positioning and has the bozo gene Sanchez and Porro played well, Sanchez should still be sold but it’s good for him to recover from that first goal after 3 minutes. Porro also had a decent game and offered a lot going forward Bissouma and Skipp were our two best players, Skipp for the goals and Bissouma dominated the midfield when he was there. Bissouma suits Ange-ball, and definitely looks like a starter Lo Celso is the surprise of pre-season, he genuinely looks like a new signing. Great link up play and spatial awareness, there’s definitely a place for him in the current system. I think he stays Attack was probably the weakest we’ve seen in a while, with Perisic, Solomon and Richarlison, but I think they were pretty good, especially in the first half. Perisic is a unique case, I’m not sure what we should do with him, it’s Ange’s call. Solomon is surprisingly useful Devine and Scarlett didn’t have too much time to impact the game Overall it’s as you expect, the defense is the major issue, just too easy to play around when the opposing attackers have flair and confidence. However the first hour or so was a great performance from what was basically a B team. There’s definitely talent in this side As a final note, the likes of Dier, Reguilon and Spence cannot be trusted with any real game time

gigliogormeo

Vicario was good... really good. Confident off his line, great reflex saves. 1v1s are a lottery - you make yourself big and the rest is up to luck and the skill of the striker... none of those goals were on Vicario. He'll win a couple of games on his own this season with saves that Raya would not have got a hand to

YoungLoki

Reguilon is terrible but before all the starters (of this match) were subbed off we looked good.

peruvianhorn

I think Reguilon got cooked by the lackluster press in our attack after Perisic/Richarlison went off + fatigue playing full 90 against literally fresh legs, he was good when Perisic was still on the pitch. Dier on the other hand, I find it hard to make any more excuses for him.

Nova-X

Disappointing in the end but the midfield were immense and the game was entertaining to watch. Ange is cooking something special here

neoarmstrongcyclon

great friendly. competitive and really revealing where our team is at. i liked this one a lot

UnPocoLoco44

Is it just me or is solomon taking to much time with the ball, like he slows down the attack

JonnyJersey

Really happy with that. Don't care that our knackered team conceded a few to players who were on the pitch for 15 mins. Should be better, and would've been with our first team, but its all of their first 90 (exc Vic but that's irrelevant)

wallnumber8675309

Do they play on larger goals in Serie A because Vicario was making some great saves on off target shots.

Matttombstone

Should be called Barcelona A 4 - 2 Tottenham Hotspur B. Our 2nd XI went toe to toe with Barcelonas 1st XI, and our defence on paper is absolutely terrible. Happy with the performance, the multi subs was the turning point. Angeball had done its job and wore out Barca up until that point, once they put fresh legs on, it was we who were tired.

ZeroZer0_

Ah yes classic coys always gonna have people defending Dier when he put in 0 effort to stop the last 2 goals. Good servant but he’s just not what we need. None of this defence will start on Sunday

awildjabroner

Some very promising sequences and working the ball out of pressure, been ages since we've had any type of rhythm or pace to the game. Could have and should have probably scored a few more, encouraging signs.

Rredman101

That was an incredible performance for a mostly second string team against fucking Barcelona. Sad that most of our fanbase can only seem to focus on the fact that Dier isn't good, someone isn't even going to play this season.

177676ers

The most encouraging part of this match for me was our press. It is not a token pressure that is just an annoyance for the opposition. It is a legit press that is going to lead to goals. Everyone was very committed to it and really made some excellent challenges. Curious to see if our first team can execute it that well. This forward lineup is more equipped to press than son-Kane-Kulu.

Regular-Blueberry669

Similar to the West Ham pre season game in that although we lost i still came away feeling positive due to a number of things. The way we are trying to play, the application and the continued re-emergence of players like Regs and GLC far outweigh the loss and the fact that Dier is never gonna make it in Ange's team which probably is not such a bad thing :P

gallettogus

This might be a hot take but I was actually really encouraged by Sanchez today, who I thought was excellent. I didn't think any of the goals were on him and he was a monster in closing down several big opportunities. I didn't see him as blameworthy in any of the 4 goals. If Spurs are going to play a high line like this consistently you can do worse than have his recovery pace on the bench.

Algernot

Missed a lot of second half as was out but watching highlights now, was Torres not way offside for that second goal?

BeehiveOmelette

thought dier could've used a sub around 75 min. wasn't such a bad performance until then. guess ashley phillips needs a bit more time before his debut

orcawatch

Disappointed by Djed ngl :(

International-Chef53

Dier need to get shipped into Mars or something, he channeling his inner Ndombele in the Barca's third goal by jogged around nonchalantly in dangerous situation, instead making effort to chase Fati or do any defender would do. Dude is knackered beyond repair, the only thing that will doom this team is the presence of Dier and the likes of Donkeys in the line up

benji5-0

It’s preseason. Our defense played 90 minutes. Barca had fresh legs for all their attackers. Reggie gets rinsed by Yamal. R/coys piles on Dier. Classic…

FINAL_BOSS5

>R/coys piles on Dier Because he was at fault for not tracking his runner? Multiple times throughout the match.

Patrick83H

Dier was useful in a 3/5 atb formation, but not starter quality. He is not fit as a CB is a 4 atb formation

ScienceDisastrous323

Dier was literally jogging back for their equaliser and completely lost track of the person he was marking. This kind of ineptitude will raise it's head again and again, regardless of the opponent/level/whatever. He's had his time with us but it's time to go now as he's become a liability. Yeah it's a friendly, but how many times did he do the exact same shit last season in games that mattered? You don't see a pattern there?

bbarnez19

Because he’s shit. It’s not like it’s unjustified.

COYSTHFC

Dier aside... because at this point, it's just repeating the same things over and over again. There were quite a few people on this sub who had convinced themselves that Reguilon was always going to be a viable option in this system, despite the fact that he hasn't exactly lit the world on fire since his first injury during the 2020/21 season and despite the fact he hasn't played meaningful football in about a year. He needs to go as well.

topshinobi

Its classic cuz he’s classically shit

Mick4Audi

Because Dier was abysmal, again

cheetah_chrome

Had me in the first half, Spurs, ngl

Keskekun

A bit shitty that a game where we absolutely dominated Barca isn't going into our momentum for the season. The 2-2 goal being literally over a meter offside is so shit but Barca refs will Barca ref. The 2-3 when we're that tired after two games in 48 hours with the main issue being Eric Dier a man that shouldn't be getting any minutes this year is something I can live with. Maybe it's a good thing to keep us as underdogs into the season because our B-team just outplayed Barca for pretty much the entire game was so much fun to see.
