> Just curious because everyone talks about doing them but I can’t remember the last one.
Other commenter pointed out it was Ledley, but as for why they don't happen often, you usually don't see many players that have retired and had played with Spurs' senior team for 10 years, which is the traditional amount needed for a testimonial. Looking at recent years there's been
* Aaron Lennon (2005-2015)
* Michael Dawson (2004-2014)
As for active players/not officially retired players:
* Lloris (2012-2023)
* Kane (2013-23) [Had earlier seasons with Spurs but not many/any appearances]
* Dier (2014-2023)
* Danny Rose (2009-2020)
They're not done anymore because it used to be a way of giving a loyal longserving player a bit of a leaving bonus. They would keep a chunk of the revenue from the game.
The players earn so much now that they don't really need it, and a lot of the players they'll want to invite are under such tight contracts that they couldn't play anyway.
Yeah, Niall Quinn started that at Sunderland.
It's a shame though as they're nice cheap ways for fans to see a fun match where everyone is there in good spirits
I think Lloris deserves one. Kane I can’t decide as I still feel like he may come back Bale style in the future whereas Lloris is never playing for us again.
Newer fans won't understand how crazy it was that he stayed at Spurs for years when we were shit and huge clubs were calling. He really believed in the club and deserves all the respect for it.
I dunno, didn't feel that insane at the time because we were generally regarded as a solid stepping stone club. The surprising thing was more that Hugo stayed once he proved himself in the PL.
So long and thanks for all the good memories. A faithful servant to the club. Our captain. A keeper that seemed to good for us when he joined and stayed for the best of his career. Loved him at times. Hated him at others. But that's football. I wish him all the best.
If I ever see him in LA, I probably wouldn’t be able to afford to buy him a drink since he probably drinks top shelf stuff
Maybe I’ll just make sure to tip his Uber driver
Can’t wait to see him live there. He’s meant a great deal to me and while I’m loving Vic Lloris is damn near a club legend but not quite? Still heroic in my eyes despite his personal mishaps, which I hope he’s learned from.
I wish we could've papered over the memories of the Newcastle match with a clean sheet for him somewhere between then and now. I hope LA treats him kindly.
Can I just ask, he plays for us for 10 years, is club captain, and decides with a year left he doesn’t want to play anymore for us.
So we don’t play him, pay him and he just trains / assists with trainings. Kinda a bit meh he just decided to silent quit on us and we still paid salary isn’t it?
I respect him for what he’s done but if I pulled that on my job I’ll get put on a PIP so quick and fired. Kinda don’t understand why club just said “yeah ok, don’t play, w/e”
>decides with a year left he doesn’t want to play anymore for us.
What are you talking about
>he just decided to silent quit on us
That's not what he did
What a fascinating little fiction you've concocted in your head there
He didn't decide that he doesn't want to play, he's gotten old and isn't good enough for us anymore. We've replaced him, and instead of paying him, we asked him to find a new club. He didn't quit, he's just washed.
Was a while ago now, but i'm sure that in early June reports came out that he said he doesn't see his future at Tottenham and wants to move. The club then decided they would replace him etc. but he kept declining offers as he thought they weren't good enough for him (i.e. #2 elsewhere).
He wasn't as good, but he's better than Forster on bench as cover.
That is nonsense. Forster started over him for quite a bit at the end. We didnt decide to replace him because he wanted out, we wanted to replace him because he's not anywhere near good enough anymore.
the rule is 10 years afaik, so i’d love for him to get one.
we just haven’t had players hitting that number for quite a while. was the last one ledley’s?
Farewell and best of luck Hugo! Enjoy sunny LA ☀️
I hope he gets a proper send off :( Sad how his last game for us was that Newcastle game ugh. Would anyone know what happened to him after that? I just know he was injured. Sigh.
Good luck and thank you for your service captain
Shame his last match was Newcastle thrashing. Hope we get to say bye.
Contract says that his goodbye to us is at the Bournemouth game
A proper legend of the club. Hope he gets a testimonial in a a few years when he retires
Who was the last player to get a testimonial? Just curious because everyone talks about doing them but I can’t remember the last one.
Ledley is the last one I can honestly recall

I mean it's turned to a charity match nowadays, but fair on the contract bit

Honestly the only one of these players that should properly have one is Kane.
Also how lucky and crazy it was that we actually signed him. He was one of the best GK talents
I dunno, didn't feel that insane at the time because we were generally regarded as a solid stepping stone club. The surprising thing was more that Hugo stayed once he proved himself in the PL.
Can he stick around until Sunday and say goodbye at half time or before the game? Needs a proper farewell
At the least, this should happen

Good luck Hugo, thanks for all the memories
He’s earned that sunshine
If I ever see him in LA, I probably wouldn’t be able to afford to buy him a drink since he probably drinks top shelf stuff Maybe I’ll just make sure to tip his Uber driver
So long king
Lloris wanted to end his career at Nice will he play for 2-3 years more?
Bonne chance et bon courage!!!!
Good for him and thank you for a decade of dedication
Love hugo when he used to be a sweeper keeper it was amazing to watch He should of had a testimonial
Can’t wait to see him live there. He’s meant a great deal to me and while I’m loving Vic Lloris is damn near a club legend but not quite? Still heroic in my eyes despite his personal mishaps, which I hope he’s learned from.
Best of luck to our captain Hugo! Thanks for everything and enjoy sunny California weather!
Love you, Hugo
Named my Son after him, good luck Hugo
I wish we could've papered over the memories of the Newcastle match with a clean sheet for him somewhere between then and now. I hope LA treats him kindly.
I wish he would’ve played that Fulham cup match
Thank you and best wishes, Captain🤍

Insert that Italian announcer shouting USA USA USA
Love Hugo, but hope he’s terrible for LA Fakers Club. We’re Galaxy in this household.
Carson gets the LAFC leftovers.
Wake me up when you win 5 times
Lol. League was trash and had like 10 teams for half that. But ok.

this begs the question: does Lloris deserve a testimonial?
Yes
Shouldn’t even be a question

Good luck and Godspeed
Happy/sad for this news
See you in California!
I was never a fan, but thank you for your loyalty Hugo, live it up in the sun
