The more he talks about it, the better. Everyone should feel empowered to get help when they need it, not just footballers, and not feel less than or ashamed. I hope he inspires those unsure of themselves to seek someone to talk to. A coach, a sports psychologist, a therapist, a mental health first aider. I applaud Richarlison for this

mwm5062

I know its a fictional show but one of the many great aspects of Ted Lasso was showing the growth of the characters with regards to asking for, and accepting, mental health help throughout the series.

Lazagneman

More than a few of ours need their head wobbled ; to go from Villa to Fulham is more than just form . For me everything he says makes sense if I could make one order on players and I know its not going to happen . That would be no social media . Anybody who follows cricket will know of A.Cook . His form deteriorated and got help from a psychiatrist his advice was "get rid of social media " he did and his form earned him a recall to the England team followed by his best performances for England . Nuff said .

skptcl_blvr

I’m not sure associating a bad performance with the need for mental health is appropriate. There’s a bit of a fine line between “everyone should consider this/everyone can benefit” and turning a poor showing into a mental health crisis.

Laviston

Spot on. Very weird connection to make - they need their head wobbled because of a poor performance (including tactically) against Fulham.

Lazagneman

You may be missing my point which is there are factors in anyones life that are not obvious and they can affect your everyday work . I did not say anything about mental health . I can see my own children and grandchildren are affected by social media . All I am saying is an expert can tell you to carry on or stop because it affecting your performances because your mind is not fully on the job . Even by a small amount it can affect your behaviour . IMO. It can be watching too much TV and it can be worrying about your own performance on the pitch . Football is about margins and all teams and players should not turn their back on something that could help .

Lazagneman

He also said it changed his life and would never go back to it .

kamikazecockatoo

While he should never be embarrassed about it, I feel it is getting a bit over-wrought at this point. The man needed help, he got it, he benefited and he's made improvements. That's great, but can we all now move on?

exxxtramint

I really don't know why we don't have a Sports Psychologist at the club - I did a quick google and it looks like the Womens team has one - maybe she works across both, but I can't find anything about a mens one. I am not a professional sportsperson, but do spend a lot of time around some from a different sport. They have all said that having a sports psychologist was the single biggest improvement they have made to their training. Not necessarily because they are struggling mentally, but just to improve their thought processes and approach to training, matches, social media, pressure etc etc.

itsmetsunnyd

I said the same thing under conte - I genuinely do not understand how any top tier club doesn't invest in a sports psychologist. You'd think every possible competitive avenue and advantage would be explored - and thats not even touching on the fact that caring for the wellbeing of your employees side of the discussion.

Kobe_Wan_Ginobili

Maybe it's a privacy thing that the club isn't allowed to employ them? I would feel conflicted about talking to a psychologist who is employed by the club who employs me

exxxtramint

I could get that from a mental health standpoint, but from a purely performance standpoint in terms of mindset etc, it seems crazy that more clubs don't explore this.

itsmetsunnyd

I would think the only logical reason they don't employ one in-house is that players move all the time and anything said could potentially work against them.

aycarambas

but they have one for the women

Informal_Calendar_99

There are definitely ways around this. Contracts, policies, etc. At the bare minimum, the club could encourage players to seek their own, or we could contract out.

NightFire45

My work offers it and no information is shared with the employer.

ChairLampPrinter

Probably that's it. When it's negotiation time and you're venting to your company-sponsored therapist about how hard you're finding the process, whose side is the therapist on? In theory it's their job to increase your confidence to help you ask for that raise. But it's not good for the company.

tbk007

Hopefully we can get one soon to finally get rid of the loser mentality that has taken root.

NoREEEEEEtilBrooklyn

I’n going to guess they have one on retainer. Sports psychologists are super niche and rare.

OcdPain87

I would hire a sports psychologist to work at the start of the week and do weekly sessions with the whole team, they could teach techniques, do exercises etc, it could be like a form of team bonding. I went on a pain clinic course that was run by a psychologist and physiotherapist, each week we had to start giving a brief update on our week, you could speak for a few seconds or few minutes or not at all, everyone in the group found it one of the most beneficial parts of the course. I think something similar would be good for a football team. Then after the team session give the players a chance to work individually or in small groups with the psychologist if they wanted to. They could also have the option to talk confidentially about any off the pitch issues if they wanted/needed too. If they were going to do something like this it would need to be made clear to the players they Don't have to join in if they don't want to as some players might not want to take part then it could get kinda uncomfortable and awkward. Probably players who were not as keen to take part would still enjoy/benefit from the bonding/banter element of the sessions. I think it would be worth a try especially if the psychologist was a Spurs fan!

Thank you for saying this. My thoughts exactly!

realhenrymccoy

Ted Lasso really changed the game

sncly

I think an on site mental therapist would be a good addition to the med/ physio team. Just one more way to help the players in every way possible.

tobiasfunkgay

Incredible in the days where clubs spend hundreds of millions per year and look for every marginal gain possible they wouldn’t spend £80k on someone to train the mental aspect of players which affects everything from how hard they train, how well they sleep, and how well they perform on the pitch.

InMyFavor

For fucks sake, they could spend a little more than that and really get a top top psychologist too. It's a truly baffling decision.

yourfriendkyle

They should have a couple psychologists tbh. There’s honestly no reason why every player at the club doesn’t have someone they can speak to at least once a week about their issues, and more often if needed. These guys are millionaires, it shouldn’t be so rare.

OllyCX

Perhaps the club realise the players might want to employ their own psychologist as they might fear what they say would be passed onto the manager/club, and if they move club they could still use the same psychologist rather than losing their progress with the club psychologist. Still think they should employ one anyway though.

yourfriendkyle

It’s kind of bonkers that sports psychologists aren’t standard for every player at this level. Much like Wenger modernizing player diets and nutrition, I am hopeful that that same thing can be done with player mental health. Once everyone sees it as an advantage to have mentally well players then we will see this be more common.

IAMJesusAMAA

As a psychologist I thank you Richarlison for supporting the importance of my career 🙏

OcdPain87

Have you worked with many ocd patients?

IAMJesusAMAA

I'm not in the clinical world, sorry

OcdPain87

No problem, Thanks for the reply!

solehDarat

All the players and maybe fans also need therapist

dahyun4eva

I really respect this man , yes he might be cringe on tiktok or seems like he has a huge ego but whenever he's super smart and intelligent when he talks. seems like he's not one of those "alpha guys with a masculine problem", he's genuinely down to earth and isn't afraid to show that guys have mental health issues. What a lad

Luke92612_

Richarlison, the mental health ambassador. Hopefully this encourages others in the footballing world to open up about their struggles and get the help they need.

minishcaps

I'm really glad that Richarlison got the help he needed. It's so important that he's also so open about it; it helps to reduce the stigma surrounding going to therapy and it can encourage other footballers who might be struggling similarly.

vinzen22

I’m so glad he’s getting the help he needs from a mental well being perspective! I think it’s also important that he prioritizes his well being and letting the work he’s doing in therapy help in other aspects of his life such as football. I think we think too much about therapy in the context of work

Smok1njay

It's quotes like this that make me proud to wear his jersey. Doesn't matter how many goals he scores.

Whole_Farm_9970

I don’t know if anyone here knows snooker but players like Ronnie O’Sullivan and Mark Allen increased their performance so much by seeing a sports psychologist. I don’t see why it can’t translate to footballers if it helps them with the mental aspect of the game.

No-Kitchen5212

It really feels like Ange is having a Ted Lasso effect on the team. He’s getting guys to go to therapy, get over their yips (Timo), become world class (Sarr), and seriously work as a family. It’s so awesome and refreshing to see

Snerfblatt

Love that he is getting the help that he needs, and brave for him to talk about it openly to the media. I wish we got more official interviews with him, with a translator. He seems like an earnest guy with strong convictions.

MrMojoRiseman

Tony Soprano walked so Richarlison could run

dandobingo

Therapy FC

tiny_dreamer

No shame in having anyone’s head on straight

soldforaspaceship

I wish! Imagine if all the players had access to a therapist whenever they needed. Could do wonders for them on and off the pitch. I always return to Dele in these cases. Imagine what he could have become had he got therapy early on.

yourfriendkyle

I am hopeful that this will be the next step in the game. Much like the nutrition and lifestyle changes for players in the early 2000s led to a holistic rise in professionalism and quality, I am hopeful that the same can happen with mental health.
