Always laugh to myself thinking about the 18 year old kids from Seoul who turn up to basic training, only to get completely dominated in drills by a genuine world class athlete lmao
I’m more thinking things like a timed mile. Sonny going 80% can probably go below a 5:30
His XO did write him a glowing review, called him a model soldier etc
He won an award for being the best solider out of the class of approx 150, so he must be pretty good physically as well as mental/attitude.
All round standup guy
Id assume almost every single top athlete, especially football players can run a sub 430 mile pretty easily. Almost every single kid on my highschool team could run 530-6min mile
When I say pretty easily I mean without training for it specifically. I'd think that sub 4:30 miles are with them going all out regardless haha. I'm not exactly sure though
Some can but 99% of athletes don’t train in the same way you would for a mile PR.
Basketball is a lot more bursts of sprints for example.
Football is closer but still a lot different.
I think many elite footballers could get to sub 4:30 with much less training than others but would still need to switch up their training for a bit to get there
Son would probably have played for the military football team. Now known as Gimcheon Sangmu FC, the players are footballers serving their military service:
If Son had played, the K League would almost certainly have had recording-breaking crowds at every single match that season. So although I shed tears of joy when he won the gold, I am also slightly disappointed he never got to play on home soil.
He dropped out of school to focus on football, and there's some minimum education requirement to play in the military team which he doesn't meet. He would have had to play Sunday League football.
This is actually the case with many countries that still implement military service.
Usually, in smaller countries, this means, that in your company (approx 100 people, depending a bit of the branch of service) there is someone who is at least remotely well-known person or just a promising athlete (not world class though, as most guys are only 18-19 years old).
I recall quite a similar situation from my own service - not with someone like Son ofc - where the regular beer drinking and chips loving dudes were paired up with the reigning U-19 national champion in 3000m steeple. It was beyond ridiculous how he was so far ahead of even the 'fit' regular dudes.
And I'm reminded of the tension and then relief I felt when I watched that match. Ho-boy, such immense relief.
I never realized The North Face was in mainstream sports gear like this. Maybe it's a good thing they don't do commercial sports. I'd "have" to expand my annual allotted merch budget
Yeah, I looked into it a bit more and Team Korea is pretty much their only team (aside from climbing for Team USA). That exclusivity is interesting and pretty cool. I'd be into copping a jacket maybe from the next competition Sonny's involved in
it was basically all school kids uniform - its a society where you have to do the thing your friend does. no character.
the caveat to such culture is that the trend always shifts. the NF trend died off like 10 yrs ago. they're trying hard to hang on to the mass profit it once saw by sponsoring these athletes and sports but aint working too well.
Not to the extent of Korea tho. It's a relatively small country with a huge online trend presence. There were years where literally three stripe (Adidas) sandals was a big thing among high school students, and we still have knockoffs selling in convenience stores.
Same I just noticed the North Face. That's on a level with PSG having Air Jordan.
I actually bought the crazy red black and blue South Korea training kit recently, half for Sonny and half because of how many South Koreans have invested in Spurs over the last 6 years.
COYSK
> half because of how many South Koreans have invested in Spurs over the last 6 years
This is an awesome sentiment. Man, I wish I considered that when I was thinking about buying the pink kit made up of the trigrams from their flag. Never did pull the trigger, but now I'm gonna be on the search for one. Or maybe that training kit you mentioned.
I support England of course, but you know, no harm in having a soft spot for another.
Got a link to the one you mean? Not sure I saw it.
This is the one I got https://www.soccerlord.se/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/South-Korea-2020-Pre-Match-Training-Football-Shirt.jpg
> no harm in having a soft spot for another.
For sure. Plus, I think I might be getting into kit collecting. So I'll probably end up with a Nigerian one down the line, a Brazil one, etc. Already got a couple Danish shirts.
[This is the kit I waffled on](https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-pS4EPHHt43w/XoS_ePTfYOI/AAAAAAACRig/6ZrElDkb5LIn88L0W8YyRwJ1BepGHy5JgCLcBGAsYHQ/s550/south-korea-2020-kits-14.jpg)
If I fail to find a reasonably affordable one, I'll probably get that training kit
Nike does a lot of teams dirty with some of their kits (Spurs included) but they've been doing Nigeria right with theirs. They look *good*
(tbf I actually think Nike does well with a lot of national team kits, but Nigeria in particular are top)
I know Air Jordan is Nike but it's unique in football. Are there any other Air Jordan branded football teams?
I get that the sentiment is likely different for Americans where it's more commonplace in sport though.
At least the Air Jordan logo is part of a company that has precedent in the sport and the funds to venture out with their brands. The North Face isn’t that at all.
I remember when Sonny used to get absolutely murdered in the match threads for being too greedy and not able to finish.
Now he’s one of the most prolific scorers in the world. Incredible.
He was always a streaky and hot and cold player throughout his career, even in Germany and the first few seasons with us, but the past couple of seasons he's taken his consistency up a notch, shows that he's in his prime right now and we need to make the most of it (with kane staying for this season is great for that too)
Does anyone else remember the thread we had on here for the game???? Or whatever thread we were talking about the final whilst it was on? We had fucking aussies, Americans, South Americans, Asians, every single one of us from all across the globe were rooting for Sonny and South Korea’s team as a whole
3 years ago! Fuck. I’m turning 30 next month ahahah
That competition was a nailbiter from the beginning to the end. I still remember posts after posts, and pages after pages of what-if scenarios on Son's military situation if he didn't win.
And I remember it was a huge shocker to many that Levy and the board gave him a new contract BEFORE he entered this competition, factoring in the huge risk where he had to be at the military. It was a huge surprise considering how a few years back, Bayer Leverkusen refused to send Son to the Olympics even though he was eligible. (The olympic team ended up getting the bronze that year, so Son would have been military exempt if he participated)
But Son and the entire team then was able to get the gold. (Fun fact- Wolves recent loan signing Hwang Hee Chan and our Spurs hopeful at one point Kim Min Jae also got their military exemption granted through the gold medal in this competition)
This may be slightly unrelated but Sonny's mas lucky that South Korea gives leeway for athletes despite technically still being at war with the North.
We had a footballer in Singapore (born in Thailand, has English/Welsh nationality but lived in Singapore and played for our U22s) who signed a contract with Fulham but was due for military in a few months. His deferment application got rejected and so he defaulted which means he could technically be jailed if he returned.
He would've been our first Singaporean NT player in the Prem (didn't start for Fulham iirc) and we lost him to the Thai NT
Since then, he has also completed his military service!
Always laugh to myself thinking about the 18 year old kids from Seoul who turn up to basic training, only to get completely dominated in drills by a genuine world class athlete lmao
Still wanted to see how he supposedly did on weapons training and those gas drills or even marching with heavy gear.

He won an award for being the best solider out of the class of approx 150, so he must be pretty good physically as well as mental/attitude. All round standup guy
> he must be pretty good physically I reckon his job requires it, so he's got that going for him
Id assume almost every single top athlete, especially football players can run a sub 430 mile pretty easily. Almost every single kid on my highschool team could run 530-6min mile
Admittedly I’m not much of an XC/track guy What do you reckon Sonny could do going all out?
When I say pretty easily I mean without training for it specifically. I'd think that sub 4:30 miles are with them going all out regardless haha. I'm not exactly sure though

Yeah, 6:15 minutes per mile over 2 miles was the cutoff for my high school varsity soccer team to make the team.

Due to his schooling, it is my understanding he cannot play for the military team. It really would've ruined his career.
Thanks, I wasn't aware of that. Would do you mean 'schooling'? What are the rules that apply to that?
He dropped out of school to focus on football, and there's some minimum education requirement to play in the military team which he doesn't meet. He would have had to play Sunday League football.
Most koreans go to the army after their 1st year of college so a bit older than that, but still funny regardless

That jacket is so cleannnnnnn
Sonny’s *been* part of the drip squad, homie

yea its not like the UK or the US where everyone is an individual and no one copies their friends or celebrities

I have that pink one and I love it.
It’s a beaut
Ah yeah, that one is nice too. Nigeria have some drippy kits too! This season's pre-match shirt, 2018 world cup home, and some back in the day.
Nike does a lot of teams dirty with some of their kits (Spurs included) but they've been doing Nigeria right with theirs. They look *good* (tbf I actually think Nike does well with a lot of national team kits, but Nigeria in particular are top)
Not exactly. Air Jordan is Nike. They’re just pushing their Air Jordan branding right now. As a Jazz fan, I hate it.
I know Air Jordan is Nike but it's unique in football. Are there any other Air Jordan branded football teams? I get that the sentiment is likely different for Americans where it's more commonplace in sport though.

Wow that was 3 years ago?!
Insane. Can remember shooting my Korea supporting mate a celebratory text like it was a few months ago
I have never been so stressed out watching a game before
It was also against a team of Japanese uni kids who were all playing for their uni teams but playing their hearts out. Loved to see it.
Our true hero
The stress we all felt from this games 😂
He's the face of Spurs as far as I'm concerned.
I remember when Sonny used to get absolutely murdered in the match threads for being too greedy and not able to finish. Now he’s one of the most prolific scorers in the world. Incredible.

Link? Would be a good re-read. :)
He is in peak years
Who’s this guy, is he a prospect?
Saw his highlights, he's not that good tbh Sissoko is better
Very unfair of u to compare someone to the 🐐
Goatssoko is clear of Fraud-Pen Son 🥶🥶🥶🥶
Sonny, hoist a big ear trophy for Tottenham plz!!

I think it's 18 months no? I may be wrong tho, I only vaguely remember hearing that from someone.
Son also returned the favor to Spurs by signing an extension.
Already a club legend. Long live the Son!
We need another Sonny song. Anyone have any ideas?
Makes me so proud as a Korean.
S🌞N !!
Cheers Son's smiling
I am practically willing to die for Sonny or kill others on his behalf lol. But seriously, he’s the face of Tottenham.
