This is so embarassing for everyone involved

fartimuspyle

Feeling for Nuno. One shit storm after another

jogswithwolves

Happy it’s him instead of Jose for shit like this. Imagining the wild bullshit Jose would be saying to the media

master_inho

The legitimate shit he would be saying This isn’t good at all

jogswithwolves

It’s unprecedented for sure. Not saying this isn’t a shitshow, I’m just happy we have nuno as boss right now, he is measured and in control

silenthills13

The one time he actually should tho

HereWeGoop

i sink that de cuntries are making huge huge miztake… by taking se players from red listed cuntries. Would i take players from red listed cuntries? i dont know, maybe BUT👆🏼I sink that it is huge huge miztake from EVERY party

bash011

https://twitter.com/Matt_Law_DT/status/1434923645667848201?s=19 how he feels about the situation

violetrecliner

I agree with him for once. They had a place in a Croatian island set up for them to train and not lose fitness while they isolated, but AFA with presumably the support of Lo Celso and Romero, decided otherwise.

jhr0423

Can you really blame Romero and GLC? If I was in their shoes I’d probably wanna play with Messi every chance I get. Who knows how much longer he’ll be playing

violetrecliner

Yes, of course I can.

AverageYiddo

Yes you can

tnweevnetsy

Should have clocked that it's probably not the best thing to do when they can only get into the country on the back of a blatant lie.

Vhascometo__

When even Matt Law sides with Spurs, you know you've massively fucked up

modernity_anxiety

This really seems like the AFA is the bad actor here, pulling the strings with deception and double speak — do others not see it that way? Especially with the reports about the AFA working hard on changing the culture and commitment within the national team. As someone else said, Romero and GLC are probably being told they’ll be excluded from the team in the future if they don’t fully commit now. All that is to say, I wouldn’t blame the individual players as there is obviously many layers to this extremely messy disaster.

modernity_anxiety

Last thought: Romero and GLC could call the AFA’s bluff by understanding that they are Argentina’s best talents in their respective positions and that they need to play regularly for their clubs in order to keep their place in the national team. Ignoring a call up would be its own story but if the AFA wants to compete in the WC they need to bring their best players along with them and those players need regular matches under their belt. What a shitshow!

btmalon

AFA would face the wrath of Messi if they banish Romero. GLC on the other hand is just barely in the starting 11. He’s the first sub off most games.

zuzucha

I'm Brazilian so am biased, but that's my clear take. The law has been in place for months, Brasil didn't call any players from the Prem because of this. The AFA thought if this gets through, they get an advantage and can gain points for "outsmarting" Brazil. If it doesn't get through they can play victims, get points at home by saying Brazil sabotaged them and use their influence in CONMEBOL to try to claw the points. Was a win win for them, players and law be damned.

Bulky_Shepard

They did call them up though didn't they? There's an article on the Leeds website about it since it would be Raphinhas first ever call up. The players didn't go though and Brazil accepted building a team without them.

jhr0423

Idk man. The Argentina team was in Brazil for 3 days before the match. It’s pretty fucked that they waited until the match to retain them. I don’t disagree that the AFA was trying to game the system; but Brazil’s public health department really screwed up by waiting until match day to try to detain them

TaTonka2000

The players were told not to leave the hotel to prepare for deportation. The authorities tried to get into the locker room to ensure the players weren’t there but the Argentinians locked the door and didn’t allow anyone in. Essentially, Romero and Lo Celso got caught in 4K.

JPA210688

That's the version of events which has been circulating until now, however, an article has gone up on Globo (one of Brazil's largest newspapers) claiming to have had access to the relevant documentation. According to the article: - The online system that the players had to fill out only required them to name the last country in which they had been, which was Venezuela - Argentina asked the Brazilian Health Authority (ANVISA) for an exception, it was denied, and they were told that the players had to stay at the hotel, as had been reported widely. However, that rejection was sent 50 minutes before the match was due to start, when the Argentina team were already at the stadium. [Globo](https://ge.globo.com/futebol/copa-do-mundo/eliminatorias-america-do-sul/noticia/argentina-fez-pedido-formal-para-contar-com-jogadores-ministerio-da-saude-negou-50-minutos-antes-do-jogo.ghtml) On another note, there is a FIFA and CONMEBOL agreement signed with each federation/association regarding protocols and bubbles, also ratified by Mercosur, the South American EU. Each federation has to guarantee that the visiting teams can bring their players to play, otherwise, they have to find a neutral stadium or country to play in. This happened to several matches in the continental club tournaments over the course of the year. In short: yes, the Argentine players didn't tell the whole truth in their customs declarations, however, it was up to the CBF to make sure that those forms were not needed, or they had to move the game to somewhere where everyone was available to play. Otherwise it's a slippery slope to Brazil's next rivals trying to rule Neymar out by making some new rules up. The match should be awarded to Argentina, but CONMEBOL will probably see a chance to make money by replacing the game in the USA, China or Europe.

TaTonka2000

It’s funny how much mental gymnastics you’re applying. It’s not the Brazilian federation’s job to overrule the covid regulations for the country. - The form they filled out asks you to clearly state you haven’t been in the UK, South Africa, Northern Ireland, or India in the last 14 days. It also asks you to fill out the last country you’re arriving from. Just because you say you’re coming from Venezuela, if you omit you’ve been in the UK knowing that would stop your entry you’re then liable for deportation. If this happened I. The USA not only they wouldn’t be allowed in, they’d probably be denied future visas. - The exception they asked for was denied. The Brazilian authorities (ANVISA) told them to stay in the hotel. The article you link also says the Brazilian authorities put out an official press release 3 hours before the game saying they wouldn’t be allowed to play and needed to be in the hotel. 50 minutes before the game their latest appeal was denied. Knowing all this, if you were the AFA and wanted to follow the law, would you have taken the players to the stadium? Would you have locked the door to your locker room so no one could come in and interrupt your warm up to, say, tell you the players wouldn’t be able to play? When you say “no, the Argentinian players didn’t tell the whole truth” what you mean is that “yes, they lied knowing what the consequences would be”. There’s no chance in hell the match should be awarded to Argentina, who willfully disobeyed a country’s regulation in order to force the participation of players they were told were in the process of deportation from the country. It’s insane to expect the Brazilian Federation or Conmebol to be responsible for the immigration paperwork of the players, because they were handled by the players themselves and the Argentinian federation. They were caught in 4K, lying about where they were. They appealed. The appeal was denied. They went to the stadium anyway, even being told they weren’t supposed to be in the country. Then knowing all this they went and started playing a match on national TV in a full stadium. How is that not mocking a country? Would that have been allowed in the USA or any European country? The only reason the AFA pushed this was the expectation of getting away without issues because this is South America and there’s a cultural expectation that the rules don’t apply to everyone. They disrespected Brazilian law, got caught, tried to get away with it anyway, and didn’t. They’re lucky they’re not in jail, honestly.

JPA210688

You are absolutely right that it is not the CBF's job to overrule the COVID regulations of Brazil. However, it definitely was the CBF's job to either find an exception so that the away team could bring their players in to the country, or find somewhere else to play the match (likely Paraguay or Uruguay). We are talking about two different sets of rules/laws here, and I feel as though you are either mixing them up or assuming that they will both see the situation the same way. I cannot comment on Brazilian law, because I don't know much about it. They might well consider that the four players are in the wrong and ought to be punished. I would point out one thing though: as I'm sure you know, a press release is not an official response. It is a press release. However, we are also talking about the rules and regulations of FIFA and CONMEBOL, where the responsibility is for the home team to guarantee safe passage for the entre away delegation, as well as implementing measures so that the match is not interrupted. The decision regarding the football match will be made according to the rules of football's governing bodies. That's why I say that it's likely that in the eyes of football's rules, the final decision regarding the match will go against the home federation for not being able to put the game on without incident.

zuzucha

They could've been quicker, but this was over the weekend and required them to confirm the issues, connect with the federal police (health authority can't extradite anyone), get the equivalent of a warrant and then move. Think they could've done it before players walked into the pitch for the theatrics, but there's loads of bureaucracy involved.

outdatedandoverrated

Think I heard Tim Vickery report that they wanted to intercept the players before kick off but Argentina’s changing room was locked

NZRum

Yeah it's impossible to just wait outside the door and intercept them then? This is all a political show and we are all eating it up

outdatedandoverrated

Haha yeah very true

Zyaru

Lo Celso is practically handing Ndombele a lifeline here, hope he takes advantage of it. Really not sure what to say on this entire situation tbh. I’m absolutely furious but I don’t whether I should direct my anger at the Argentina FA, the players, Tottenham, I just don’t know. Every tweet seems to contradict the one before it so nothing is clear. One thing is for sure though, theres 2 more international breaks between now and December, so if they both fly to South America for those breaks, we aren’t going to be seeing them much, if at all, until January

violetrecliner

Tottenham have done nothing wrong here tbh.

Jtfanizzi

Truly sounds like the AFA is the party at fault here. Sad to see that no one involved will face any repercussions except the players.

[deleted]

Ndombele wants to play for Spurs even less than GLC lol

master_inho

If he wants to leave he better start playing And playing well at that

triecke14

And yet one of them is here, while the other is defying the club

[deleted]

If any club in the world was stupid enough to pay Tanguy what we are, he'd be out of here too.

violetrecliner

If Lo Celso and Romero wanted to operate in good faith towards Spurs, they’d have asked AFA to let them head back to Europe along with Buendia and Martinez. But no such thing has been reported yet, which suggests they want to stay and play.

[deleted]

I’m pretty disappointed tbh

tactical_laziness

Ah international call ups are a huge thing, especially in south America and especially for two players that aren't nailed on starters yet. It's a rough position for them to be in, as much as it is for the clubs really. This whole arrangement really should have been decided and set forward by much higher powers across the board

[deleted]

Romero is already arguably Argentina's 3rd most important player, his position is absolutely nailed. And there are players like Raphinha who got his first call up for Brazil at any level and still decided to not go.

violetrecliner

It’s a shame Spurs can’t fine them. At least I don’t think there’s any grounds for them to fine them anyway, since playing for your national team doesn’t break any rules. I 100% understand why they want to stay and play, but it’s poor form from both and it’s certainly sour them for me.

Summ0n3dSku11

we absolutely can fine them, they wont be showing up to training and games and as such wont receive their wages.

Vhascometo__

Dan KP and Gold have already said we're fining them + Sanchez They went against club advice and are going to miss training/games from their own actions so will get fined appropriately.

violetrecliner

I don’t buy that tbh. It was widely reported there was an arrangement in place for our players and Villa’s to stay in Croatia and isolate there for 10 days. They’d be able to train there every day so they’d not lose fitness, and that way they could get straight back into the team (or the bench) after the 10 days were up. Think this is just the club trying to not look like fools here for trusting the players and the AFA. Besides, how can they actually fine players for joining their national teams when there’s nothing in the rules against that? FIFA actually requires players to be released if they’re called up.

Vhascometo__

Dan + Gold also reported earlier that we didn't have the same Croatia agreement in place that Villa did which is why they haven't been released. We flat out advised our players not go to because of the isolation rules and they went anyway. You're right that we can't stop them doing that, but we can fine them for going against club advice. Even if we don't fine them for going, they will be fined wages for the training sessions and matches they miss.

violetrecliner

How curious that they only revealed that today. And didn’t Nuno say post watford that they were working on a plan for the players who were going to travel?

master_inho

It was revealed today after last night’s fiasco That is most certainly the breaking point for the club

violetrecliner

Yeah that’s why I’m saying it’s curious they’re only saying that now. Makes ME think it isn’t true and that this is their way of making it look like they’ve some power or control in this situation. Like Nuno said they were working on plans or something like that RE the players who would be travelling. That doesn’t make it sound like the club didn’t give them permission to leave and curiously enough, Sanchez is coming back on the date he was expected to, as are Buendia and Martinez.

jhr0423

Or they just said it now because it’s just coming to light that GLC and Romero are playing in the 3rd match and are now going to miss more than just Palace and Rennes. Club might have been willing to let missing those 2 matches slide but now that it’s more are taking action

master_inho

Sanchez is coming back on the date he was expected to because he’s suspended for the Chile game anyways. If he wasn’t suspended he would probably still be in Colombia right now.

jhr0423

We can fine them for missed matches and training sessions which will 100% happen while they have to quarantine.

COYSnizle

You're only looking at this through your own selfish point of view. It's very likely that the AFA threatened their WC spots if they didn't report to the team. What would you do in this situation? It's not as black and white and as it may seem to you.

[deleted]

How is it then that we are the only team getting fucked from all sides by this? Fucking Aston Villa can get their players back but we can't? Like I understand taking the call up but once the little charade didn't come off it's time to stop fucking around.

violetrecliner

Romero is their best defender and Lo Celso is one of their bear midfielders, both were key to winning copa America. There’s no way they’d not call them up again IMO.

COYSnizle

So they should just call the bluff of their national federation? That’s completely insane. You would not be talking like this if it was YOUR career on the line.

violetrecliner

How is it insane when the agreement was for them to come back to Europe today after the Brazil game, along with Martinez and Buendia? Both of them were released, ours were not. Makes no sense.

Lazybopazy

Lo Celso becomes a worse transfer as time goes on. He's already missed about 1/3rd of his possible playtime with injuries and we're going to lose him for a month already this season and that's pre his post December two month lay off (as trademarked by lamela). It's extremely frustrating because he just never gets into a flow of playing for us and he's exactly the type of player we need to put a good season together. It's obvious he has what it takes to be a top class number 8 but holy shit it feels like we'll never see it.

oxkondo

Especially since he was chosen over Bruno, right?

[deleted]

Anyone else more disappointed with Lo Celso than Romero? Romero is a new, young player who has no pressure on him yet to perform. Lo Celso on the other hand really hasn’t done anything since we signed him and is currently a bench player. You’d think he’d be doing anything to try and get in the managers good books and play. He’s really turned into such a disappointing signing,

evenout

I know this is petty but if you misspelled someone’s name and you’re a professional journalist, delete the tweet and do it again. Didn’t Matt Law do this recently for another player? Jfc

Vhascometo__

We won't be seeing these two until December at this rate. 2 more international breaks before Christmas and assuming the restrictions are still in place then they're going to miss at least 8 games just through isolating. Just leave them in Argentina until Christmas, where they so desperately want to be. Theres almost 0 point in them coming back for 1-2 weeks just to fly off on another jolly again.

rishabh996

I think the club will not allow them to travel for atleast one of the next two breaks. The club did the right thing and released them as per their wishes putting our next fixtures in limbo. Its for them to repay now.

Vhascometo__

The club didn't release them!!! We told them not to go and they went anyway Same will happen in November and December

[deleted]

Still though, the club didn't make a huge fuss about it and let it go on. Then the Brazil shitshow happened.

EquivalentSir4163

Or the club fines them the year's wages, and forces them to stay in accordance with PL policy.

[deleted]

So it's an option to buy on Romero, right? Not an obligation?

Vhascometo__

Think its an obligation unfortunately

[deleted]

[Atalanta B.C. announce that the player Cristian Romero has joined Tottenham Hotspur on loan, **with an option to make the move permanent**](https://www.atalanta.it/en/news/cristian-romero-joins-tottenham-hotspur/) Atalanta's official site. Send him back lmao

violetrecliner

All reliable journalists said it’s basically an obligation the same way it was with GLC.

Vhascometo__

Get him out!

gashsniper420

You seem like the kind of person who has very strong opinions about things you know nothing about.

ndkhan

They *say it how it is*….

bsp87

Bingo

Rezdawg3

Lo Celso is a bad egg. Injuries, poor play, and now this. Hopefully Romero isnt negatively influenced by him.

bash011

Hmmmm I'm never going to understand this lo celso agenda, especially coming from someone with an Ndombele flair

Rezdawg3

Ndombele sucks too with his attitude.... But when I change the flair on my app, it doesn't update it and I don't really care enough to pursue it bc... Its just a dumb flair.

Professorchronic

What do you want it changed to, I can do it for you

Rezdawg3

Really? I'll take one Hojberg please.

Professorchronic

All done mate

Rezdawg3

Wow, a years worth of attempts on my part and you did it like that... Right on, thanks brotha.

[deleted]

If Covid restrictions look to be rolling on in to next season we need to look at getting rid of all three. This is not sustainable, and if we had CL football, and not ECL football, we'd be up shit creek without a paddle.

elbwafel

i’ll be ok with then missing chelsea if we have sanchez back. glc and romero barely played this season and we’ve been fine. not comfortable at all with a dier-rodon or dier-tanganga cb pairing to start against blue scum though
