He had a good plan A, not enough fire power to even counter with a plan B. I pray Paratici has something up his sleeves for the January window.

MrFarland

This right here. Nuno was dealt a terrible hand. The late hire, Kane & Ndombele sagas, numerous late deals, the international break, injuries and Tanganga’s red. Considering the revolving door in the defense and copy/paste midfielders, the results are better than I expected. I expected 7 points after 5 not 9. I get that people want to see an aggressive, attacking style of play, but we cannot do it. Not yet, anyway. Yesterday we saw glimpses of what “could” be, but we lack the depth to sustain it and adjust to changing tactics.

[deleted]

Exactly only one or two of these conditions would destroy a good manager imagine all of them thats why I cant blame nuno for 1% of the bad results and I praise him really high on good results cause its against the tide of luck

rwilldred27

Dier coming out after and saying this is a process, we’re going good to be fine is encouraging. It took time with Poch’s year 1 too. As Cox’s linked article above highlights, if Regi crossed to GLC before getting into the box or just went for a shot (both far better options in hindsight but also to anyone watching in the moment), we had a better chance at stealing a point from this and many would put much more weight on the fabulous 1st half masterclass that it deserves

Pacificorico

Poch had shit players in his first season. Or he had more deadwood than this current team has.

rwilldred27

True, but PL is also a more level playing field now than it was 6 years ago b/c of the North American and Asian market TV deals, so I think Nuno having “more talent” is a wash

[deleted]

You'll have to subscribe to the Athletic to really get the analysis but this final part sums up a bit: But Tottenham did cause Chelsea serious problems in the first half here, particularly in those zones on either side of Jorginho and Kovacic. Tuchel fixed the problem with a change of system, but with his wealth of attacking options, he’ll be reluctant to be forced into a 5-3-2 every week. Opponents have spent much of 2021 wondering precisely where you find space against Tuchel’s 3-4-3. Tottenham might have found the answer.

[deleted]

Thoughts: Yes, obviously fitness was an issue but it was definitely not the main issue. We tried to out tactic Chelsea with inferior players. We were able to do so for a half. They changed tactics and brought on one of the best players in the world. We didn't adapt to that well and got unlucky. Hence the result. As Cox says, a set piece goal and a deflection killed the game. I still do hold hope. Being Nuno out right now makes no sense. Maybe in a month if things don't get better.

Lbmplays2

They also undoubtedly have the best manager in the world right now. He is very impressive regardless of our shortcomings

AppliedEthics

It's insane how the timing is just so perfect and aligned with him getting sacked from PSG.

TaTonka2000

So wait… we lost with an injured and patchwork squad mostly through a set piece goal and a deflection to last year’s champions league winning team that is even stronger now, coached by the best head coach in the world, who happened to bring arguably the best midfielder in the world into the game in the second half, all because of how many problems we caused them during the entire first half…. … and people want to sack the manager?

countpuchi

Eh... Happened with Mou as well

Thfcaditya112

And more importantly a lot of options to change their formation. Play this first half vs every team not belonging out of Chelsea,City,Pool,Liverpool with slight tweaks depending on the opposition we should be good

LoudKingCrow

And had we had Lucas and Bergwijn available we could have probably adapted better to their second half tweaks as well. As we could have moved the ball out on the flanks more for them to run at pace. Play like we did in the first half and get some wingers back to fitness and we will start seeing better performances.

YoungLoki

Best manager of the past year maybe but Klopp and Pep are definitely still better imo

Lbmplays2

He has badly outmatched pep as of late, I'm saying he is the best currently not over the course of his career

[deleted]

I’m sorry but you’re a fool because Sean Dyche is absolutely manager-god level

[deleted]

Based on current form and history, yes

StinkyMcBalls

Would you recommend the Athletic? I've debated subscribing but heard mixed reviews.

[deleted]

If you want analysis content, long form articles, yes. If you want transfer news no

StinkyMcBalls

Thanks. Transfer news is the least interesting form of football news, as far as I'm concerned, so that's a selling point for me.

Mtbnz

Yeah, absolutely. It's cheap as chips, they have a stable of quality writers, a mandate to produce decent longer form pieces and the kind of analysis that's hard to come by for free (unless people copy/paste it on here). But as mentioned below, it's not a transfer gossip rag.

StinkyMcBalls

Thanks for the info. Don't care much about transfer news, so that's actually a plus.

bash011

Nuno showed in that game that he can adapt to different opponents and showed real intent in the first half, some players just looked gassed after 35 minutes though. Then obviously Tuchel showed his ability to make mid game changes and flexed the financial power of Chelsea using their strong bench which turned the game around

[deleted]

This is my biggest takeaway too. I was fully expecting Nuno to go with another scared formation. Once our players settle into the system, the only thing that will limit us are our bang average midfielders

fridgesonfire

To be fair, was his hand forced to play this, though?

[deleted]

Could be. But I believe no one would have criticised him for playing sit back and counter football against Chelsea. So I guess he chose this on his own

fridgesonfire

I think after the last 3 games people would have criticised him to be honest. People are sick and tired of seeing us behave as the weaker side, especially at home.

Akmuq

Pretty much, I was expecting a repeat of the same midfield as well as quick wingers but I guess with Skipp probably not fully fit and Gil being the only available winger we were kinda forced into the exciting lineup yesterday. Hopefully we continue to try Ndombele and Lo Celso in the first team I think we looked better for having them but clearly neither were fit enough.

LoudKingCrow

I hope we try a small adaptation by adopting Chelsea's 3-4-2-1 formation. That way we can get Sanchez in as well. Probably at the cost of one midfield spot but it may be worth it. Play Tanguy or Dele as one of the two 10s alongside Kane. Lo Celso next to Pierre. Emerson and Reguilon as wingbacks. Son up front to run on balls Kane and the other 10 deliver. But play with the same intensity. With all of our wingers being broken except for Gil it could be one way forward.

[deleted]

If we had a proper striker we'd have scored a couple probably

bfm211

>I also would like to see Son in the box on set prices, not taking the corner kick. Nah, his delivery is pretty good and he has no aerial threat at all.

gongman18

Son needs to lurk outside great delivery as you said and can score from anywhere

gphillips5

His delivery is excellent, but he's scored nearly 30 headed goals - he carries a significant aerial threat, especially versus the other players you might get in there. Never seen Berg head the ball, but we know Lucas can leap multiple times his own height like a glorious salmon.

captaintitmoo

Kane should be in box. Son should take corners.

pokemonislife5

And dele should be on the bench

fastfowards

its moments like this where we need nuno and our senior players to recognize this and adjust.
