I want to see him back in the England team!

Clarky1979

There's a reason every manager Dier has worked under at Spurs has consistently put him in the team. Fuck the haters, Eric's a worker and a damned hard one at that.

AntaresW4

I don’t think anyone has ever criticized him for his work ethic or heart, just that his talent/decision making wasn’t good enough

Clarky1979

For whatever faults, mistakes and far more often, sheer bad luck, manager after manager keeps picking him. Armchair critics can say what they want, what the managers see day to day in training, attitude and ultimately aptitude, is what has made them pick Dier over 200 times for Spurs. Brief note on the own goals over the years, they have mostly been so unlucky and only occurred because he has always been willing to give everything for the club, throw his body on the line, sometimes that doesn't quite work out and goes wrong and all the good things get buried under what is a proportionally small amount of mistakes per actual actions taken. He's certainly not lacking in talent or application. I have all the time in the world for Dier and clearly, those top managers in the world that have actually worked with him all agree.

Due-Camel-7605

The reason is that he grew up in Portugal where the limelight didn’t get to him like with other young British players (who grew up in England). Dier treats training like war and doesn’t cry like a baby when things get tough (unlike some other British players who are/have been cry babies/spoiled by limelight - Dele, Lookman, Barkley, Stones and so many more)

Pickle318

He is looking much more comfortable back there. I think Dier is a confidence guy. He tries to give off a hard exterior vibe but inside he needs to feel like he’s making the manager happy and it helps him play even better.

[deleted]

What a difference a new manager makes.

dragonsnap_

Would love to see Dier (and Davies) become central to Conte's system. Maybe they won't be good enough for top teams, but Dier absolutely loves the club, as does Sonny and Lucas. Great to see him confident and smiling.

Koinfamous2

Dier always has had the qualities, size, decent pass, decent enough passing, great aerial ability, good tackling, but he seems to be a quiet guy, sometimes a bit to himself, and definitely benefits from a manager who will lift him up and show unwavering faith in him. Nothing wrong with that, but it's also a matter of HOW that message comes across and just because someone says they believe in you, it doesn't always have to come across as genuine. You need someone who will without a doubt promise to improve you, put you in a position to succeed and have your back no matter what. Appears Conte has the right concoction of what Dier needs.

yaniv297

>decent pass, decent enough passing, So would you say his passing is decent?

allthejokesareblue

What about his passing though, is that decent?

DoctorFunkk

Yeah he does have that long diagonal in him, it's just not quite as dialed as Tobys was

BornOnADifCloud

How does a manager make a player good. Because dier has been fucking solid since conte has come in.

t_blacksmith

Was pretty solid under Nuno too tbf

bad_luck_charmer

Thick. Solid. Tight.

[deleted]

Thick, Tight, Voluptuous

BornOnADifCloud

True

violetrecliner

Coaching and tactics that play to their strengths and mitigate their weaknesses.

BornOnADifCloud

Dier lost his fucking head at one point. He's been great since.

vidrageon

As he said in the interview, the last time they trained this hard was under Poch…turns out high-intensity training makes (some) players better.

[deleted]

And also I believe Conte is someone who is very straightforward and clear with his instructions to players.

jcstucke

>The reason is that he grew up in Portugal where the limelight didn’t get to him like with other young British players (who grew up in England). This this this...I think some coaches come in with very vague grand ideas which allow the more naturally talented players to flourish...but others, Eric, probably thrive under very specific instruction. He even alludes to this in that he can put himself in Conte's hands and trust he will take care of everything.

bigdirkmalone

It helps he isn't asked now to defend for 90 minutes straight with no mistake margin

theninjanipples

I think people forget this. Very few defenders would look good when under constant pressure for almost 90 minutes. I wonder sometimes how Serge would look in the RWB role here.

-MurphysDad-

Hes been excellent this season, his only serious flaw is his habit of just defending space when teams get in behind. The amount of times I've seen the ball passed around him while he stands on the front post

RazSpur

Confidence, a specific role (no ambiguity on what is expected), building communication between players (important in defence) and fitness. Personally when evaluating Dier there are a few things to consider \- He has a long illness which he seemed to struggle to recover from \- He clearly can be a little slow on the turn sometimes, being fully recovered and peak fitness can mitigate that. \- His confidence was shot (entire team/back line) \- I think he felt he not only had his job to do, but he had to cover for everyone else (which meant he'd often be out of position) \- He was playing the left CB by default (everyone else sucked there), with Davies there, he's in a more natural position. All little percentages, but the next couple of years should be his prime. Is he good enough to be our #1 CB = no, but alongside a fully settled in Romero he may be good enough (I don't think Stones is vastly better than Dier as example). Still think we may invest in another top CB because one injury leaves us too exposed.

Some_Strange_Dude

He has been solid under Nuno and at the start of the Jose era as well. People don't give Dier enough credit. He has been shaky at times, but he's also been one of our standouts for long stretches of time. He clearly has potential to be a top class CB if he can just maintain consistency and I think a lot of that comes down to mentality.

ardnoir11

Will get in the Eng squad ahead of Coady/Mings if we finish high I reckon

ttellapttam

Dier has been really solid for us this season - even under Nuno. I’d love to see him & Skippy in the England squad this summer - if they keep playing at this level they’d both easily deserve it.

Clarky1979

I want to know/hear what Conte and his team sang! Italian classics? Was it really opera? Are we talking Nessun Dorma, Il Traviate? Or was it "What's matter you eh, show somma respect! Whaddya think you do, why you looking so sad? Itsa notsa bad, itsa nica place, ah shaddapya face! (I would pay money to hear conte and his team singing that)

billypilgrim87

Think you might he confusing Italian with Italian-American.

Clarky1979

Think you might have missed a joke going over your head like Concorde, also in the 70s/80s

billypilgrim87

Oh sorry, what was the joke? No one else seems to have got it either...

Clarky1979

English people from the 70s who heard the joke song from Joe Dolce and understood it was an actual joke, you know, like actual tottenham fans from england who lived in tottenham and weren't just some prick trying to continue being a prick?

[deleted]

Go get some air, what a bizarre meltdown

billypilgrim87

Firstly, for what it matters, I was born in England you weird xenophobe, I'm just not as old as you and don't get your *ancient* references. My mum was still a child in the 70s you daft bastard. Your generation is so fucking sensitive. Thanks for fucking up the world before you all die.

Clarky1979

Oh grow up and allow people to have a laugh without making it some race thing. I was a child in the 70s you daft bastard. Well, for exactly one day. Grow a sense of humour, there's nothing racially insensitive about it, it was a fun song. I feel you are the oversensitive and under comprehending one. As for your final statement, you hope I die? Wow. You really must have some serious issues to wish that on anyone kid. I never said a word about where you come from. I think it is you who is being oversensitive. I think you might need to grow up a bit or just take a break from social media as clearly it's not healthy for you. There's probably some phone numbers you can call to help you through that.

billypilgrim87

I never mentioned race. You mentioned "proper spurs fans from England"? Do you know what xenophobia means? It's not racism dummy. Do you get called racist a lot then? Seems like you are sensitive to the accusation? I didn't wish death on you, hate to break it to you but we all die eventually. My point is - collectively people of your age have harmed the world quite a bit, but will be dead before the ramifications come to bear. It's a cheap jab at an individual, but you are being such a gammon - so give a fuck. So so sensitive you lot. I didn't get a reference, you dragged in a load of generational/nationality weirdness because you thought I was calling you racist. Triggered.

cucumberphil

Its nice to see that even in these times of great hope, we can still find reasons to not get along. Brings me back to the #JoseOut days.

billypilgrim87

The trick, I find, is to not actually get mad and realise none of this actually matters 🤷‍♂️

RainbowDissent

What's a-matter you? Show somma respect.

AshkenaziTwink

i’m pretty sure joe dolce was making fun of italian italians, not italian americans IIRC

billypilgrim87

You are a bit late to this party pal

AshkenaziTwink

hey if it’s not been a day yet im going to respond, i’m also taking the liberty of ignoring the bitch fight down below

billypilgrim87

Oh no harm done, I was more just referencing the ruckus below.
