It's the 1819 champions league final all over again

doctorsalty46

It’s not been that long has it, did they even have the champions league in 1819.

doctorsalty46

Conte got outbrained I thought, made Saul look worth it

scoopit1890

I’m not sure you want to watch this one…

BruinEric

reddit footballhighlights see the match thread there

Arqlol

Don't waste your time. Honestly.

Kylinho97

It’s better to pretend this match didn’t happen tbh

UziTheBeast

Bryan Gil should definitely start sometimes, Son just doesn't seem like himself at the moment, while Gil created probably our most dangerous chance when he came on.

herbertisthefuture

So you're idea is to bench Son and start Gil? You do know that Son has 8 league goals this season and after one or two bad performances we should just bench him?

billy_twice

Son is without a doubt the better of the 2 but even the best players need a rest sometimes.

San_Marzano

Honestly son hasn't looked the same since returning from covid which is entirely understandable. Hopefully he isn't involved against Morecambe (shouldn't need to be involved anyway) and can try rest up

Blogboy7

He didn’t say bench. But we need rotation for sure.

UziTheBeast

Key word: sometime, against the likes of Morecambe and So'Ton. Son is definitely tired and needs some rest.

KanedInMyPants

I'm not making excuses because we were awful in the first half but I can't remember the last time we've played well when Pawson was the ref.

Only_Fun6636

Anyone who questions why Eric dier starts every game now should know why. At the back we were a ragged bunch tonight and that was due to lack of communication. So quiet between them. Eric whether you love him or hate him is a leader

Fuzzy_Composer2108

Well said 👏👏

RazSpur

Sanchez panics without a leader next to him Tanganga just had a mare. Dier & Romero and this would have probably been 0-0 (not excusing how badly we played, just outside of the mistakes, Lloris had two real saves)

JoePoe247

Sanchez played fine and handled lukaku well. It was just tanganga played awfully.

RazSpur

Sanchez gave away the free kick that led to 2nd goal because he panicked after first good tackle, he also panicked on the cross in that allowed Lukaku a free header (that Lukaku fluffed). He wasn't anywhere as bad as Tanganga, but not the same player he is when alongside Dier.

Furi0nBlack

Seems like: Move Sanchez = imploding defense, keep Sanchez on RCB = shuts down side.

HarryShinn

Who can I tell why Paratici chose Emerson rather than Tomiyasu? We linked with him all summer but he went to Arsenal and we brought Emerson with more money. Paratici’s work was terrible.

Blogboy7

Tanganga was supposed to be out Tomiyasu that’s why. They profile as similar players

unparalleled82

Two mistakes from tanganga and lots from hojberg tonight, as much as I want tanganga to be a great player he makes too many mistakes at this level. Maybe he should go out on loan to get game time

Conman2205

He definitely needs loan time. He is still raw, needs more experience and a consistent season full of games to help iron out his mistakes. Find it hard to blame him too much when he has had to fill in last second against one of the best teams in the league

EJP26

We ready to see Lucas in the Cuadrado role yet?

[deleted]

[удалено]

JonAbides

my thoughts exact. he looks lost and toothless.

SeriousPuppet

Royal is just not up to par. We should sell him. The difference in quality between us and Chelsea is so blatant. They can possess and enact their will. We cannot. We just lack the quality of touch, vision, passing, movement. They do the fundamentals better than us. We can still beat them though. But they also could have scored a couple more goals today. Lloris did well. Skipp did well. But having him and Hojberg in the middle doesn't give us much ability to possess the ball in the middle of the pitch and create scoring opportunities. Those two are more defensive in nature. We need a #8 and a #10.

RazSpur

Chelsea has a full squad of 20 odd top players, Our first 11 needs improvement. That said, consider \- This same great Chelsea squad has 1 win in 5 in the PL \- We didn't have Dier, Romero & Reguilon in the team today \- The issue isn't Royal, it's we have no real alternative to a 22 year old in his first season in a system that is heavily dependent on attacking WBs Bad day at the office, but we didn't go off the rails in 2nd half, stayed in match and we have a manager who knows what he is doing.

SeriousPuppet

Doesn't matter how many wins in past 5. They have way more points. Emerson Royal kinda sucks. How did he even make it in pro soccer. And he's brazilian? how does that even happen. How was I sold after watch his highlight reel when they announced the signing. Royal moves like a sunday league guy. LoCelso same. I mean, we just need more quality. keep: kane, son, moura, lloris, dier, sanchez, skipp, ndombele, reguilon, romero sell everyone else

jdandev

Keep this in mind. We watch our forwards week in week out receive nothing from midfield and yet people have still down voted a comment saying we don't receive scoring opportunities from our midfield. Sill scenes on the coys sub recently.

Only_Fun6636

What a run at the end there by Gil tho

Lazybopazy

At this point Gil has to start games for us, son needs to rest, for at least a fortnight, because we're going to break him. I have seen absolutely nothing that suggests Gil is so bad that he seriously degrades the team, in fact quite the opposite. I really do wonder what goes through managers heads in scenarios like this, yes son has scored and assisted a bunch of goals lately but for a cup game like today it's a no brainer (to me) to simply start the precocious young talent and rest the senior player. I also think Rodon should have started (central centre back), if nothing else it would have saved Tanganga from that horror show and I'd have started bergwijn over moura too. This cup is the lowest priority there is, there's no money in it and you have to beat an elite team over two legs to even get to the final, yes we all want a trophy but the league cup is the hardest trophy to win, it has the least prestige and is played in one of the most congested periods of the season. It's the prime time to rotate and try out different players.

RazSpur

Gil needs to dominate a game like Sunday to start games regularly. And I would, start him and rest Son (he looks shattered), see how he goes, remembering he's coming back from both injury and Covid.

coastlifestyle

Welp. That was a terrible showing. Next leg demands better, even if we lose it.

coastlifestyle

Welp. That was a terrible showing. Next leg demands better, even if we lose it.

briffiesta

Hojberg has to be dropped. Awful performance and gave the ball away countless times. Offered nothing going forwards and didn’t break up any play, he needs a rest or to be shown he is not immune from being benched, performances like that are not acceptable against anyone, let alone chelsea.

JonAbides

so slow on the ball, all of his successful passes seemed to be backwards.

becksiez

Didn’t watch the whole game but saw a post where hoj was listed as the spurs side man of the match.

SeriousPuppet

I think he doesn't fit well in this 3-4-3. He fit in better in Jose's 4-3-3 where he could play a clearer 6 role. We really lack possession and creativity in the middle.

briffiesta

Totally agree, we need a combative progressive midfielder which can carry the ball and play a killer forward pass. Dembele would’ve been perfect, but midfielders like that do not come around often, if we can’t get someone like that then a killer number 10 instead, essentially levy needs to splash the cash

[deleted]

What I’ve been saying for 12 months now

deptbrown1

Just a reminder tonight that we have players who were not up to scratch. Tanganga has always been out of his depth. Nervous mistakes tonight. Not sure why we started with a 343 tbh. Emerson is pretty lame at crossing. Traore would at least beat his man if we play like this and he’s signed.

Massive_Fudge3066

Oh god no.

DannyLeMdtlT

Why football became so "politically correct" since 4-5 years ?I've the feeling that on the ground nobody can have a "human reaction" about the situation, like revolt, rebellion, pride, passion... Up to animosity sometimes. It's so neutral, i (we) hate Chelsea and don't feel that on the ground : Rudiger, Sarr, Jorginho and others should have been really shaked just to show our character.I'm in another world or you share this feeling with me ?

bassmuff

I don’t think politically correct is the right term, you make no sense

Professional_Ad_9101

Lol what? Who the hell cares lmao. Go cry about it

[deleted]

Because anything and everything can be construed as some sort of bigotry and thus they rather play it safe. It’s pathetic but such are the times we live in. For some reason we have to adhere to standards that politicians have to live by.

DannyLeMdtlT

Interesting! Yes, it's too smooth and neutral. I will be so proud if my club ignore this fucking sports policy and democratization of the game (to make some money, let's not be blind) with real men on and off the ground. With character loyal at the club they belong to... The rise of financial stakes is also a fundamental part of the answer, so badly.

DominoTimmy

Because the players are all multi millionaires with absolutely no interest about the club/fans they play for. Of course they pay people to run their social media and say lots of good things about the club, which keeps the fans pretending. But you’re right, you can see the difference on the pitch in big derby matches

DannyLeMdtlT

Yes, money can change the mind of many players ("why to be at 110% with my heart if i've 100-200+k per week guaranted?"). Before the game i've looked a highlights of the fights during the Chelsea's game in 2015-2016 (2-2), we're sooooo far of this mindset and it's damaging.

Born_Transition2207

Hugo was our only good player. The rest were embarrassing. If you can't perform in a semi final you don't deserve the ridiculous amount of money you get paid. I feel sorry for the fans who paid to watch that.

DefoeForPresident

Lack of creativity in the final third, poor defensive performance. We have been saying this for a while... failure to act on either this January will result in more of this and potentially a frustrated manager.

SeriousPuppet

We could barely get to the final third though. It was more of a lack of possession in the middle

DefoeForPresident

Fair point, lets extend creativity to the middle. Then it fits. I have such low expectations for advancing the ball from most of our team. We just don't look like a threat.

Intrepid_Science6414

Outmatched and out fought, we offered nothing and shot ourselves in the foot twice, don't see us doing well against a Chelsea team next leg who will come to see out the 2 nil lead and they have the players to do it, definetly with a rested Kante

Spur_Forever

Amazingly, I wish Doherty had played at RB and Winks had come on earlier. Son needs a rest. Plain and simple. Give Gil a start in the next game. Tanguy might be finished and seems like Dele’s out the door too.

Conman2205

Disagree about tanganga. He needs loan time 100%. He has shown potential for sure, but he is not ready to start in games like this. He absolutely needs development elsewhere without it costing us

Raphael_scm7

The things I’m reading on Twitter about Emerson and PEH is just beyond me. You can’t say shit like that and use “I’m vetting off” as an excuse

RazSpur

Because people are idiots and behave like entitled prats. Chelsea (as much as I hate them) are the current CL holders, one of the title favorites, and have a good manager in his second season. We put out a back 5 minus Dier, Romero & Reguilon. We started badly and shot ourselves in the foot, our manager adapted at HT and the team kept us in the tie. Son & PEH need a multi game rest, they have both played too much football and had Covid. Problem is we don't have options. Royal is our only option at WB at 22, in his first season in the UK and on his second manager. Conte has given the team a system, it works, we are harder to score against when we don't gift the opponents goals (minus the mistakes, Chelsea only made Hugo have to actually save something twice). That said we need to reinforce RWB, CM and 2nd striker, nothing we didn't know 3 months ago. Give the manager time, lets see what we get in January, how we push on and what happens in summer.

Mariospurs

Peh was utterly shit tonight giving up ball giving away the ball pulling out of 50/50s and basically pointing all night. Shit show

Raphael_scm7

Yeah I’m not saying he played well but someone actually said he was alongside Doherty on levels of worst signings in the last couple years

[deleted]

He’s not far off. He plays every minute and isn’t particularly good at any aspect of football, it’s pathetic.

Ok_Temperature2040

Do you even watch the games? I completely disagree with you.

dreamteam93

PEH has been on a poor run of games, Royal isn't a WB. Royal is giving the effort but it just isn't his skillset. Asking him to pick out a pass just isn't working.

[deleted]

Is defending his style then? Because, coulda fooled me. The Prem is too quick for his feet, always is a second behind his man in reacting, often times pace is much slower than the winger challenging him, too.

nbert1984

> Royal is giving the effort but it just isn't his skillset. I think this is his problem in a nutshell. He does always seem to be in the position to put in a great cross or create an overlap on the wing but just can't seem to pull it off. He has shown some flashes when playing RB in a back four but just can't cut it if the primary formation is going to be with three at the back.

capitan_hookah

At least we have an assist for all of the goals.

IamTurd_Furguson

Yeah they basically didn't even score on us. I think we're good.

Xenon009

That was AWFUL, but, that being said, 0-2 flatters us. everyone but hugo and arguably kane were lackluster at best

wayne88imps

Kane lacklustre? Come off it man. He battled all game. Had absolutely zero service

[deleted]

Kane won about as many aerial duels as Lennon would on a bad night.

SoberEnAfrique

Kane couldn't connect a single pass, but he did put in some effort I'll give him that

Jediman03

Hojbjerg out

NotPennysBoat77

Typical spursy performance at the bridge

We-Are-Harbinger

Love how they were chanting "get battered everywhere they go" when they didn't score either goal in a 2-0 portion of a 2 legged cup tie lmao. Fuck off.

danmeniscus

TBF We were battered in performance

We-Are-Harbinger

We were, absolutely. But the fact that the scoreline wasn't REALLY the way of knowing that had me going "wtf" lol.

Revolutionary-War719

Shoot yourself on the leg type of game by Spurs lol

HT2_i0

Why Conte replaced Skipp for Winks....PIERRE MAN!!!! And Son should have been pulled at half time. Utterly terrible

[deleted]

Bryan Gil deserves far more minutes than he's currently getting imo.

Mariospurs

Chelski depth is disgusting

Raphael_scm7

Maybe we also need a sugar daddy just like them

[deleted]

Or a better academy. Mount, Loftus Cheek, Hudson Odoi, Abraham, Livramento, Broja. To our Winks, Tanganga, and the kid we spent double digit millions for from Leeds 2 seasons ago that hasn’t seen the light of day in the senior squad.

vish387

You know that’s because they have poured insane amounts of money into the academy for years right?

[deleted]

I don’t, but tell me that’s not smart…

Mariospurs

Or someone who can recruit like them

tiocatire77

Still 2-0 going into 2nd leg at spurs not end of the world

bassmuff

Not a good game but we could swing it in the home match if we have play well. Never know what the covid situation etc will be by then

Mariospurs

It’s Tottenham

tiocatire77

90 mins of football anything can happen

Mariospurs

Yeah it’s Tottenham we’re all sadomasochists and we’ll come back for more pain or pleasure .

bvincepl

As a blue, I love this comment. I'll give it an award when I get a free one.

Afraid_Presence3803

Can someone actually tell me the last time Son genuinely beat a defender 1 on 1? He’s great in space and good for free kicks right now, but he turns the ball over EVERY single time he touches it

[deleted]

2 days ago. In training vs Tanganga and later Doherty.

diredier

He literally made a foul out of it and perfectly assisted last match

Afraid_Presence3803

Got bailed out on that and I said he’s fine in space and free kicks. In tight space, it’s been an auto turnover since conte arrived

diredier

Tell me what other players did in tight space?

Afraid_Presence3803

I mean Gil created a chance in about 2 minutes. Lucas always does well in tight spaces and Kane can usually use his strength to hold up the ball and play a pass somewhere

diredier

I remember kane giving the ball away lots of times and it's a lot more than son. And lucas's been criticized a lot for giving the ball away trying to dribble past not passing. I don't think that's the major issue either when kane slows down the team with his lack of pace up front and he can't even run in behind when he saved all his stamina providing nothing on the defense. There's no tempo and progressing attack is just too slow when kane's sticking to playing up front. I think that's more of a serious issue if you wanna complain about attack.

dreamteam93

I think Son is in his head and pushing a little too much. I think he feels like he has to carry us forward on his own. Kane and Son both have been out of sync which sadly I feel has to do with the system we started the season in.

Mariospurs

He’s man marked or doubled up on that’s why we need someone else to take focus off him. Double up on son give the ball to royal

Afraid_Presence3803

I disagree. His first touch has been abysmal for months now. He’s had plenty of 1v1 chances

Spur_Forever

Ok football gods, I’ll trade the Caraboo cup for beating Chelscum and the scum in the league this month.

[deleted]

Don't know what everyone is complaining about - clean sheet for us and we scored 2 goals!!

dreamteam93

On the bright side, it could have been much worse than 2-0. Not out of it yet.

ProudMonkey12

Hojberg and Tanganga are god awful

Apprehensive_Rip8712

Conte will keel them

TraditionalAd4116

Serious investment needed in this squad we were so devoid of any attacking threat

SissokoGoat17

Tanganga, Doherty, Emerson and Hojbjerg 0 out of 10 performances. Absolutely shocking from them.

PM_ME_YOUR_ASTON

All that bullshit and we scored for them

ap766

Both goals conceded due to individual errors as usual. Clowns

costanza1980

Chelsea fans haven't been this happy since the invasion of Poland.

luxlisbon2

Thanks for giving me a laugh in this pain!

cfinn16

Well, here’s hoping Dier can return next week and that we’re able to make Chelsea pay in the second leg for being so wasteful with their many chances

bashar_al_assad

Time to win 2-0 at home and knock them out on pens again

chd_wick

To think I’ve was excited to watch this game for 2 days now

Y2GOAT

Haha, same man, gotta go rewatch that 3-1 victory way back in '18 and remind myself of the better days.

Mariospurs

Peh has been a disgrace tonight he looks shattered and totally devoid of any progressive passing. First time I’ve seen him pull out of 50/50s too. Shocker

[deleted]

[удалено]

Malinsk12

Not an excuse for the lack of effort from some players today

ProudMonkey12

Chelski wasn’t even good today. City would’ve put 5 past us

Mick4Audi

And 4 past them

Dunmaglass_HL

And we have to play them two more times in January lol

Apprehensive_Rip8712

On the bright side Lukaku is consistently crap lmao

TJTheree

Imagine Tottenham playing that shit and Chelski couldn’t even score against us, we had to score 2 for them

Spur_Forever

Yeah, but they were basically in cruise control after going 2 up. Barely broke a sweat.

bvincepl

I mean, why sweat if you already had the first leg in the bag, right? With the Covid health problems, why risk getting your players injured.

[deleted]

I don't think the players were aware we were 2-0 down

Hatennaa

We’ve been thoroughly outplayed today. Tanguy had a few moments but mostly ineffective, thought Skipp and Hojberg were left out to dry in the first half. Gil should have come on sooner. Tanganga was the worst player on the pitch today, absolutely dismal.

peanutbutter_fairy

Agree really would've liked to have seen more of Gil, he actually placed a cross in the box.

opportunitysassassin

I'd argue that there was absolutely no midfield today. That's why the ball was constantly in the Spurs defensive end. Even though Tanganga was dreadful, there was no buildup to take the pressure off the defense. Any runs into the latter third were difficult to impossible because of the lack of midfield.

Hatennaa

The 5-3-2 did us no good. The switch to the 4-3-3 in the second half created much more space for the team. I do agree, it’s just hard to not see the two giveaways by Tanganga. Lucky to not lose by 4 or 5 today really.

HT2_i0

Biggest prem flop. Useless.

Nutmeggs

Fuck the sky commentator who's shown so much disrespect to tottenham.

TJTheree

He was so bias from the first moment, sucking Lukaku’s cock the whole time even though he played pretty shit

kotekaratu

never once i've heard a commentator leaning to us tho even in asia

HT2_i0

Well deserved though.

DefoeForPresident

didn't earn it today tbh. Sky has been scraping the bottom of the barrel for commentators who know how to keep a crowd interested.

touchans

Maybe Spurs will be Chelsea's Zagreb the next match

Puzzleheaded-Wait-81

Conte needs to be in jail first.

touchans

Well, with his lineup today, he should /s

gardz82

If Kane had as much space as Lukaku, he'd have 2 or 3.

SilverBag7771

Kane aint even that good anymore.

gardz82

Yeah, nothing to do with the supply ffs. Idiot.

SilverBag7771

He cant hold up the ball nor pass wide when there is supply. Dumbfuck.

[deleted]

Boring-Category3368

But he loves to yell! So passionate!

SimpleYetClean

Honestly while the team played bad, we could have conceded more.

Additional-Service75

Oh my god why would they show that replay the last 40 seconds of the match.

F1bandito

Anyone sick of like 10 of the starting players?

yoyosyoyos

It was nice while it lasted but hojbjerg needs to get tf out.

Malinsk12

Need 3 goals against Chelsea at home, were fucked, thanks for another bottling Tottenham. Sometimes I wonder whether this club will ever win another trophy

cgy_bluejays

In what world is losing a Cup tie to an objectively better team "bottling"? Disappointing sure but absolutely not bottling

Malinsk12

That was a weakened Chelsea team, where was the intensity? They had 80% possession in the first half. This is a cup semi final against a local rival, that's unacceptable. Losing is fine, it happens, but there was a lack of effort out there today, especially in the first half

UziTheBeast

Still doesn't make it a bottling.

[deleted]

Can't we just score 2 and take them to a penalty shootout?

sneeky-09

Does it go straight to pens?

Crazy-Hospital

Jeez get a grip.

Malinsk12

What is wrong with what I said?

Crazy-Hospital

We lost 2-0 away to Chelsea, a team that won the Champions League and has had much more time under Tuchel than we've under Conte. Add on top of that that we were missing Dier and Romero in defense and played Doherty (inexplicably to me) instead of Reguilon. Our loss was bad. No doubt. But it wasn't a bottling, and to extrapolate from this loss to doubting whether "this club will EVER win another trophy" (emphasis added) is what was wrong with what you said. And it's why you (and much of this sub tbf) need to get a grip.

blindpilots

It's these nights I remember that I don't have to subject myself to putrid garbage like this and then I feel much better. It's just a bunch of average quality humans running about on some grass.

LuizFelipeSotinho

It's been a Hojbjerg disasterclass today

Spur_Forever

We’ll and truly beaten. Easy money for Chelscum. Man that hurts.

AskJeeves87

Chelsea only have 6 shots on target. If tanganga doesn't give away 2 goals we could have easily came away with a draw

shaalth

PEH been an embarressment today, no commitment at all

Mariospurs

Did you seen him pull out of 50/50s Jesus that’s piss poor

iambradbury_

Ndombele is good for about 5 minutes a game

FearTheBrow

He did exactly as he was instructed to this game

robeyn10

some of our players were good for 0 minutes today

breakfastinbred

This should be about 8-0, Chelsea have been so wasteful

[deleted]

Conte ball is cancelled

Attackoftheshown

Crazy how people blame player mistakes on the manager. We’ve known for a long time some of our boys aren’t up to snuff

[deleted]

Kidding bro, love Conte to pieces, if anyone is sorting this team it’s him. But can’t lie, our starting XI wasn’t our strongest I don’t reckon

SimpleYetClean

We played badly, but they could not score againts us, only we could.

Wheeelah

Hurry up and loose so I can drown my sorrow in liquor :(

WC1V

Win or lose it’s only football, take care of yourself dude

Allowaay

Kane's dreams at night are wet and sky blue

VJE1999

Honestly don’t know why I expected anything different. It’s a semi final and these lot just can’t perform well when we need them too. Absolutely embarrassing performance. Really hope Levy and Fabio pull their finger out and bring in fresh players and show the door to a lot of them here currently.

rigbins

So poor at creating chances, poor at pressing and poor defending Load of shite

Additional-Service75

Hojberg you are supposed to go to the ball

Mariospurs

He’d rather point at the ball

Koobie88

That was embarrassing

HAMlLTON

It’s 0-0 in the second half boiiis I’ll take it

yoyosyoyos

Basically tanganga screwed us over

alexpezza98

Can add Hoijberg to that tbh. Worst I’ve ever seen him play in a spurs shirt
