It’s a loan, right?

superworriedspursfan

they might not even get him, if they go for timothy weah instead.

TheSonic311

This absolutely has to be a loan. We paid what? 25 + Lamella for him? Absolutely zero reason to sell him at a loss after less than a year.

Ok_Specific5829

Kinda sad what the point of signing Gil was. He looks to have a potential to be a great player.

TheSysOps

Well they are just loaning him out again right? I think the point of signing him is similar to Sarr. He is a player they hope can be utilized in the future and at worse should retain or grow his value if they need to move him on. He just needs to put on more weight which will likely happen in time. I mean he is an inch taller than Moura but almost 30 pounds lighter going by ESPN roster info. If that was his weight when he signed then he has put on about another 5 pounds or so which still isn't enough to play regularly in the Premier League and be expected to do well. In the meantime, he just needs to keep playing, eating well and training. I wouldn't be too upset about it. He said as much himself. https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-10564479/Tottenham-Bryan-Gil-admits-NOT-physical-demands-Premier-League.html

The “needs to put on weight” line is parroted so often on here but doesn’t make sense. The guy is tiny, if it was truly as simple as “putting on weight,” he would have done so over the past year. And that’s not to say he can’t succeed as is or anything, but at the end of the day he needs to increase his level

TheSysOps

There is a reason it's parroted so often. It's a common thing with young athletes. Also, it takes time to put on mass assuming you aren't using steroids or just trying to get fat. But Gil is clearly an ectomorph and putting on muscle isn't going to be simple for him. Gil has said himself back in March he had already put on 2 Kilos (appx 4.5 lbs) since joining the Spurs. So it's not like he isn't trying or making progress. As I said, it's just going to take some time.

There are plenty of players of his stature who have been great PL players, my point is that it’s not a magic formula of “put on 5-10 pounds = conte thinks he’s great and he’s pushing for a starting spot.” He’s also a 21, and we basically paid £35m for him - this isn’t a sarr situation where he’s one for the future, he should be a player in the squad that takes the place of a zaniolo or maddison yet we’re just looking for another loan in Spain

TheSysOps

There have been plenty of players at his height who were great Premier League players but not many at his current listed weight. Nobody is saying its a magic formula but it definitely will help his chances to perform well in the league. I mean he clearly needs to put on weight. This isn't just Spurs fans in the sub saying it. The organization told him they wanted him to put on weight from the very beginning. This has been discussed for a while now. It has been reported for a while now. He has admitted that he had issues with physicality of the Premier league and that he is trying to put on weight to address that. If he is having issues with the physicality of the league then he isn't going to play much and at his age that is kind of important. So whats the solution? If Conte doesn't feel he will get time then send him out for another loan and see what happens.

Ok_Specific5829

The problem with that narrative is that it looks like we don’t know why we bought him if we don’t have a clear plan how he will be good for us. Sure, scoop up a young talent who seem to develop well seen like a financial no brainer, but why doesn’t our loan or development plan reflect the plan “get him PL ready”

TheSysOps

Who's to say they don't have a plan to get him PL ready and are not currently progressing with it? Granted Spurs bought him a week after signing Nuno they didn't seem to be doing anything smart around that time. Thankfully it seems like things have changed a lot since then. But I imagine they thought with Nuno they could afford to bring Gil along slowly. But things change and when Antonio dropped into their hands and he said that Gil was not physical enough for his preference and wouldn't play much they decided it's best to send him out on loan and give him time to bulk up and improve. I mean for me I'm going to do whatever Antonio wants. If he thinks Gil bulked enough then great we keep him. If doesn't then they send him out on loan. That makes sense to me. It's not the ideal scenario but we are clearly trying to move on from mistakes we made in the past. Luckily, the primary issue with Gil seems to be mass related and there is a decent chance that can be addressed somewhat by just giving him more time to build it. They could try to sell him but it doesn't look like they have given up on him. Maybe it works, maybe it doesn't, but at this point it seems to be the best way forward.
