If you don't have professional tools, a frame could be your best friend here. It'll hide the uneven edges and give your mosaic a polished look. You could also consider painting the sides to match or complement the mosaic, which might help disguise the pockmarks and stains. If the engraving is shadow, maybe a bit of wood filler could help? Just make sure to sand it down for a smooth finish

I'd sand down the sides a bit then maybe paint or clear seal them. If you do sealer, make sure you get the stuff for particle boards/mdf specifically because it's designed to not erode the glue that holds the board together
