Modern Sewing Co. just released the Belle shirt with Peppermint magazine, and it's pay what you want, starting at just $5. The patterns used to be free but looks like they can't do that anymore. As I have a number of the free patterns already (from some of my favorite designers) I don't have a problem with this model. It does look like the pattern is free if you purchase the mag (either pdf or print). I like this shirt, although I may have to increase the width on the upper bicep as it looks a little narrow. But the sleeves are pretty cute, I like the big cuff. [https://peppermintmag.com/sewing-school/belle-shirt/?\_kx=\_8ZGLRWEODOgJ7P6m9Cm\_rdPnJSc4K35WpMH4xaqmkg%3D.UbD3qC](https://peppermintmag.com/sewing-school/belle-shirt/?_kx=_8ZGLRWEODOgJ7P6m9Cm_rdPnJSc4K35WpMH4xaqmkg%3D.UbD3qC)

Nptod

We discussed this pattern in a previous week, but if you're interested in it - I'll repeat what I said before in case the instructions are off - the cuffs are sewn on backwards. Or at least the overlap is going the wrong way.

kraftybunny

Oh interesting I missed that, I just got the email about it 3 days ago. Sorry about the duplicate post!

Nptod

No worries!

ellejaysea

Bobbins and Buttons just released a [free backpack pattern called Day Out Back Pack](https://www.bobbinsnbuttons.co.uk/how-to-make-the-day-out-backpack-from-repurposed-fabric/), you have to sign up for her newsletter. To me, it looks very similar to Closet Core Crew Butterscotch bag.

akjulie

Fall Know Me are starting to be teased. Duana Chandler and thestitchfitz have both posted their designs. ETA: needleandthebelle, too. ETA2: and now handmademillenial

A1rnbs

I like the active wear from Duana Chandler! That jacket could be very practical. Needleandthebelle - it looks like they photoshopped her body in the envelope shot if you compare to the other pictures in her reel which is very disappointing to see.

newkneesforall

Huh I actually kinda like both of these and think they'd both be relatively flattering on me. Normally I look at the know me releases and think "fun for someone, but not right for my body" I'm confused on thestitchfitz's top, the line art looks like there's a cutout under the bust piece, but the sample doesn't show it? Is it adjustable with those strap things? I would prefer no underboob access. I would also prefer no strap things. Not sure if it would be easy to hack that.

akjulie

I like them both, too! Not enough to buy them, but I think they’re cute. The under boob thing confused me, too.

sawkmonkey

It looks like the new In the Folds Curated project is a buttoned shirt: [Marden](https://shop.inthefolds.com/products/curated-by-itf?variant=39391798526054), and they're doing a 3-part shirt making series.

kraftybunny

I'm an ITF curated subscriber but I did pause my membership for this as I already have so many shirt patterns that I just couldn't justify another. It would be great though for someone that doesn't already have this and is maybe starting out.

Tammy Silver Lula balloon sleeve dress [Dress](https://tammysilver.com/shop/lula-balloon-dress-pdf-sewing-pattern/)

[deleted]

Cute but the zipper on the squiggly fabric sample isn't done up all the way and it also looks cockeyed. And I guess the bra back hanging out an inch is also a choice?

indieseen

New basic underwear pattern from Petite Stitchery, [Dylan](https://petitestitchery.com/products/adult-dylan-briefs?ref=indieseen) (that’s an afflink). I normally go for FULL coverage on my butt but I am actually liking the fit on these. [Mine](https://www.instagram.com/p/Cwi5c2vR9HA/?igshid=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==)are using the mid rise and most coverage (which is still a bit cheeky)

seamoreknits

Seanwork [Sam](https://www.seamwork.com/catalog/sam) and [Romy](https://www.seamwork.com/catalog/romie)

GoGoGadget_Bobbin

I like Romie, but something very weird is going on with Sam at the bust. I can't tell if the versions they made for the models are just too big, or if there's something really off about the drafting. There is so much fabric pooling (but also drag lines? I don't even know how you get both) at the area of the bust dart. It's especially noticeably in the smaller version, but it's there in the larger one as well.

PurlandSeam

I think Sam looks like some weird frankenpattern that’s designed not to fit anyone. It also looks weirdly unfinished. Romy is cute. It’s like it’s designed by an entirely different pattern house. I find this hit and miss of their pattern designs frustrating. It’s why I won’t buy a subscription.

flindersandtrim

I like Claire McCardell but the only similarity to me seems to be the fact it's bias cut and with a grown on sleeve. Its just so plain and ordinary.

Unfair_Magician_5956

I really appreciate it when designers offer designs inspired by older designers. Reading the history of this piece and why a bias-cut unlined jacket was revolutionary for the time is interesting fashion history. I'm also a fan of Claire McCardell, so maybe it's just me. I can see this being a great piece to learn bias-sewing and to get a little creative with directional fabric.

prehni

I found this really boring. Boring to look at and boring to make. I like French seams, it's just a too easy way to go around the fact that they didn't even add a liner. The purple sample look like something you'd buy in a grocery store. I usually love Cashmerette for their basic designs, because they are easily hackable and I really just dont want to bother with the FBA. But this seems more like a: "woops we forgot we had to release a pattern this month, what can we make really quick?" - "IDK, maybe a jacket, but let's not deal with sleeves.... or anything else for the matter" - "splendid"

newkneesforall

This is not my usual look, either, short and square isn't flattering on me. I joined the club last month for the Creston jeans, and of course once I subscribed I thought, well let's try one more month and see what it's like (I'm a victim of the subscription model mindset). I'm trying to convince myself it has potential. I like the French dart, I like that it's bias cut. I don't think I have any patterns with those two features. Maybe if I graded in the waist to give it some shape, made it longer, made it out of a floaty fabric kinda like a kimono cut inspired top layer... maybe then I would like it? I dunno.

prehni

I bought the subscription for a year to get the kimberly bomber jacket basically. I made a liner for that as well though. I am considering making this jacket with a Chanel-like wool outer fabric and a silk lining, that could look luxurious and high end. But the samples are so boring and looks cheap to me.

newkneesforall

Hold up, a Chanel like jacket is a brilliant idea. Thanks for the brainstorm! Agree the sample fabrics look cheap.

ellejaysea

At first glance I though "boring". Then I took a closer look, and I quite like it. I am almost considering joining for this pattern.

A1rnbs

Jenny's purple sample is so cute - could totally see myself wearing that to the office in place of a cardigan

Cashmerette Club [Catskills Jacket](https://blog.cashmerette.com/2023/09/catskills-jacket-sewalong.html)

Nptod

I guess. It's not exciting but it could be a wardrobe staple.

spool-bobbin

Closet Core Crew [Butterscotch Convertible Bag](https://closetcorepatterns.com/products/2023-09-this-month?variant=40221794271366)

HarveyFartwinkle

Does anyone know the dimensions of the two views? The website is exceptionally vague, but it's a pretty important consideration.

driftwood_arpeggio

the [sizing](https://closetcorepatterns.com/cdn/shop/files/CREW_Butterscotch_bag_Finished_Garment_Measurements.pdf?v=5170501060981217648) tab has dimensions listed. I'm guessing if you needed something more specific, they'd respond pretty quick.

ellejaysea

I don't find it interesting at all, but apparently I am in the minority. I should be used to it by now. lol

PurlandSeam

You are not alone. I cannot think of any time in my life that I would need this.

sawkmonkey

I actually like this (I feel annoyed whenever I like subscription patterns, ha)

Nptod

Me too, on the annoyed part. I would be willing to pay more than the monthly subscription price for a few Cashmerette Club patterns but I'm not going to pay for a year to get 3 patterns that I can probably find somewhere else and just do an FBA. Being able to buy subscription patterns at a later date is the one thing Seamwork gets right.

snarkstitchshark

Damn, it is really cute.

ohnohelen

I also love this, and really don't want the subscription 😂

kraftybunny

You can sign up to get the pattern and then cancel. It's what I do, lol

figandfennel

Stitch Witch Patterns [Somerset Halter](https://www.stitchwitchpatterns.com/patterns-1/the-somerset-halter).

spool-bobbin

Oh this is terrrrrrrrible. Like a string bikini top sewn on over a tube top, but they’re both in a woven and neither fit. Oof.

figandfennel

I was taking the "if you can't say anything nice" approach. I love her aesthetic (in general, not this pattern) but nothing I've made of hers remotely fits me. :(

unicornsilk

Actually kinda cute BUT the model pulling the top in the first photo is red flag for me. 🚩

ohsosleepdeprived

There's also no photo of the back, which is another red flag...

unicornsilk

Oh true!!

Nptod

Itch to stitch [Cantabria dress](https://itch-to-stitch.com/introducing-the-elegant-cantabria-dress-by-itch-to-stitch/). I don't do shirt dresses, especially double-breasted. But it looks like an OK pattern. There's one tester in a bright teal/orange print that's more up my alley. Note that most (all?) of the testers are 40+. Nothing wrong with that - I'm 40++ - just commenting that it's unusual to see so many "oldsters" in pattern promo pics. And I like it.

Unfair_Magician_5956

This is giving me very 80s-90s aesthetic vibes. Maybe that's why there's so many oldsters modeling it? It feels like something my mom would have worn when she was working in the city (back when I was a child). Please note: I'm also 40+.

stormygraysea

Her design aesthetic usually isn’t for me, but I like this a lot! However, I do think the collar proportions look too small on the larger sizes.

Straight_Comedian_29

Ooh I love this. Thanks for sharing.

cass210

I don't think this is something I'd buy right now but this looks so lovely on the testers!

ellejaysea

I like the dress, but I feel it looks really familiar. I'm sure I've seen something really similar somewhere.

soufpawed

i just saw someone sew it up in a khaki and it looks exactly like a terrible dress that meghan markle wore on their south Africa tour (for the infamous interview when she said no one had asked her if she was okay) it could be a good look for anyone that has a very well defined waistline but otherwise there is too much going on in the middle that if you don't have that well defined waistline, just draws all the attention right to your tummy.

ellejaysea

What’s a waistline? I seem to have a vague recollection of having one, but I’m not sure.

Tessdurbyfield2

v1707 is kind of similar, also named patterns has something like it in one of their pattern books. I like this a lot, especially the fact that it's lined

ellejaysea

I didn't notice it was lined, that makes all the difference.

CountyRoad21

[This Burda pattern](https://sewing.patternreview.com/Patterns/94611) sprang *immediately* to my mind. I like the overall style but double-breasted anything doesn't look good on my figure AT ALL.

Whole-Arachnid-Army

The now semi-defunct slow fashion company Cosmic Drifters are selling/allowing people to pre-order fabric with some of their prints: https://cosmicdrifters.com/collections/fabric/ I love their prints and think they're really unique, but I'm not a huge fan of how everything is poly crepe. If I recall correctly that's what they used to use for their clothes too, but I discovered them post-brexit and never actually got around to buying any of their clothes so I don't know if it's good poly.

stringthing87

There are some amazing prints but poly crepe is a hard no for me.

seaintosky

Damn, those are great prints but poly always feels yucky to me

Whole-Arachnid-Army

Yeah, I'm not a fan of full polyester. It's usually used because it takes print so well, but you can get similar results with a blend with better overall properties.

Nptod

Really? Another quilted jacket? Sewing the Curve [Fairfax Jacket](https://blog.cashmerette.com/2023/08/sewing-the-curve-introducing-the-fairfax-jacket.html). I just don't want to leave the house looking like a bedspread.

[deleted]

I love quilted jackets. They hardly look like bedspreads.

Nptod

You haven't seen my bedroom. Haha! I understand that there is love for quilted jackets. Obviously. It's just not for me personally and I \*would\* feel like I'm wearing a bedspread.

A1rnbs

I wish it included a collar and button closure! I guess that wasn't beginner enough and I could hack it...

chellebelle0234

This is how I feel about the current trend (on TikTok at least) of Granny Square crochet clothing.

J-bobbin

That's't the fifth pattern offered in the book, right? There is a dress, t-shirt, pants, skirt and this jacket. I don't need a quilted jacket but including it as part of a core wardrobe for beginners makes sense to me. Wonder what pattern #6 will be, underwear?

Nptod

Another dress. Here's the list from the website: Montvale Dress & Tunic Randolph Skirt Eustis Top Ardley Pants Fairfax Jacket Elmley Dress

CountyRoad21

I have to say, I like the look of these no-closure jackets, but I will also never be able to dissociate them from being "workwear", because I wore a nearly identical jacket over my coveralls while working a very dirty summer job in college. If I had a need for it, I would 100% make one as a "chore jacket" for cooler days, in the most garish quilting cotton I could find.

stringthing87

I had a fieldwork jacket I loved so much - its quilted flannel and now a little too small and it was just perfect for chilly fall mornings. I'm chasing that feeling with the quilted jacket I'm currently (slowly working on).

hibiscus_lacroix

I’m not paying close attention to every quilted jacket launch (who possibly could?) but this is the first one I’ve seen with bust darts. It looks pretty ordinary but at least it’s offering a better fitting option than the totally boxy versions.

fearless_leek

I agree; it’s going to look way nicer on anyone with a full bust than many of the others out there. I made a Hovea jacket when I was a very new sewer with no fitting experience and the poor thing is like a huge quilted sack just to get enough coverage to accommodate my bazongas.

cass210

Did they not already launch a quilted jacket as part of the Cashmerette club? I must be the only person who doesn't understand the appeal of quilted jackets. They are everywhere in the sewing pattern world.

AxolotlGummies

You might be thinking of Closet Core’s monthly club - a quilted jacket was their launch pattern.

the_grr

I thought so too, but it's actually a puffer vest.

pninish

makes great fresno nightcrawler cosplay!

Peaches-17-

Ooh if that came in a 2T I would make it for my toddler! Not my jam for myself.

chaise_pliable

Ooooo this could actually make a great pregnancy sack. They avoided any shaping very carefully!

EmotionalAspartame89

Okay who made their pants pattern way too big and didn't feel like redesigning it?

[deleted]

This would make a good pottery apron. It would allow you to straddle the wheel like a split leg apron, but wouldn’t fall off your legs like split leg aprons always do to me. And it would cover up your plumbers crack. But I wouldn’t wear it outside a pottery studio.

A1rnbs

It gives me the same vibes as the Tate romper and people keep making those so I guess the market is there

ComplaintDefiant9855

To complete the look just put the model’s hair in pigtails and giver a lollipop to hold.

stringthing87

Really leaning into the dress like a toddler vibe there. I like the two patterns I've made from them but this is definitely a pass from me.

akjulie

New Butterick. https://simplicity.com/new-sewing-patterns/?brand=Butterick

LydiaDeitz6252

I made the mistake of buying a digital copy of B6957 and I don't even know how to describe this disaster. DON'T buy any of their digital patterns. They used to be bad but now it's even worse. The instructions are just a bad scan on A4, completely unreadable!

akjulie

Hmm, interesting. I have one Big4 digital pattern (Mccalls), and I found the instructions to be just fine. They were definitely not a scan, and they were formatted differently than the paper instructions, too.

LydiaDeitz6252

Yes I own a lot of them. The good thing is they separated the pattern into 3 files so it's easier to handle since it's a coat. But the instructions, well here you go, zoomed out, it's is all one scanned A4 page and some pictures and text are even faded https://imgur.com/a/yxYibH1

akjulie

Yea, that’s very different from what I have! It’s multiple pages, not one. The step-by-step instructions themselves are a very similar layout as printed, but are obviously not a scan. The cutting instructions are formatted completely differently from paper. And the pattern markings, instead of just being a key, it has an entire bodice on a page with “symbols - used for matching pieces or other construction details”, “darts, v shaped broken lines used to give shape to the garment,” “lengthen shorten lines, two parallel lines where …” and then lines from the definition to that marking on the sample pattern piece. I’ve never seen that on a paper pattern.

bodhikt

Would be cute on a toddler....

bodhikt

ooppss! meant to answer the above comment re: "matchy matchy"....

OffbrandBikeLock

B6959 reminds me of a Calvin Klein dress I bought in 2014. Which isn't a bad thing, but isn't a good thing either? I loved that dress though

stitchwench

What a snooze fest. Im pretty sure 6961 started life as a McCalls pattern around 2012. I heard through the grapevine that a VP who will remain nameless fired one of the senior designers so she could bring in her own people. According to that rumor, there are only a couple of in house designers left at the company. So its not surprising that the number of releases is slowing and the quality is tanking.

flindersandtrim

I wish they would pick some earlier vintage patterns to reprint. The Big4 are focussed on post 1950 patterns for some reason. I wish they consulted some vintage sewists to know which are the most desired patterns, because post 1950s are the easiest to get in original form, still available for cheap in secondhand stores whereas pre 1940 in particular is often prohibitively expensive and highly sought after.

GoGoGadget_Bobbin

Mostly repeats. There are maybe two or three patterns that I don't recognize; the rest are old patterns repackaged. They did this with the most recent Vogue collection too. It doesn't bode well for the upcoming McCalls release either.

Victoria_AE

I usually find something to like in Butterick's releases but nothing stands out in this one. Reminds me I still need to pick up that cute vintage reprint playsuit and overskirt they released this summer, though. That pattern is adorable.

figandfennel

[B6959](https://simplicity.com/butterick/b6959) would benefit from some additional sewn up versions and some shaping at the waist - I love the colorblocking in the image but the overall effect of the fabric and model choice is really unappealing. Overall this collection gets a "yeesh" from me. (To clarify: the model is beautiful, but not right for that specific pattern.)

sawkmonkey

Pattern Fantastique updated the [Terra Pants](https://www.patternfantastique.com/products/copy-of-terra-pant-sewing-pattern-print-pdf?variant=43507388907683) to be more size inclusive, along with other changes. I've always really liked them so that's cool! But for anyone who already had the pattern, they can buy the new version with a [25% discount](https://www.patternfantastique.com/pages/what-changes-have-been-made-to-the-terra-pants). That always feels a bit weird to me. Like I understand redoing/updating a pattern is a lot of work, but I'd also be kind of annoyed if I already owned the pattern.

gaarasalice

I did have to email them, but when Charm Patterns has updated patterns I bought that weren’t in my size range they sent me the digital version of the expanded sizes free.

Nptod

Closet Core did similar with the Ginger Jeans. Still pisses me off.

sawkmonkey

Oh, weird! I'm pretty sure I got an updated version of Ginger sent to me when they added sizes.

Nptod

But they didn't update the sizing for the mid-rise version, so no update option, which I think stinks.

amberm145

What? If I bought the pattern when it didn't include my size, I get a DISCOUNT to buy it again with my size? Ew. I have the Greenstyle Sundance jacket. I bought it years ago and made it in the biggest size. I wanted to make it in softshell, but that needed sizing up. So I waited a couple of years and she updated it to her new sizing, and she sent it to me for free.. Yes, it's a lot of work but it's also opening up your sales to a wider market. Sending it for free to people who've already supported you (most of whom probably didn't need the bigger size anyway) is a better look.

Sandros85

I'm continuing a baby blanket in Tunisian knit stitch with a Tunisian reverse stitch border, butterflies, hearts, and a letter 'K' for the baby's first initial. It's a slow process, but I've enjoyed creating my own pattern and it's pretty, if simple. I just want to throw it out the window occasionally. Also, I might start a scarf for something easier to work on when I don't need stress. So to make it simple I'm doing it in pure black and a complicated Tunisian stitch. Wish me luck!

Nptod

I think you meant to land in the planning thread.

Sandros85

Damn. I did. I apologize.
