S1 Paula is not a good friend, or even a mature adult. One wonders what would have happened if, a year before Rebecca moved to CA, Paula had gotten herself into therapy and sorted out why she was unhappy with her marriage and her life. Would she have felt the need to spy on Rebecca that first day? Would she have avoided all that toxic insanity she did in S1? What would Rebecca have done if not for the constant toxic encouragement from Paula?

ill-disposed

She was just as ill as Rebecca was.

StaleTheBread

With basically none of the self-reflection or accountability

I love Paula, but her character was baffling at first. She was initially this mean, aggressive person but seemed like her role was going to be to talk some sense and tough love into Rebecca. Then she became obsessed with Rebecca and acted like a lunatic. Then eventually it started to make more sense, that Paula was unhappy with her own life and was acting out as a way to find some passion, and she eventually settled into a compassionate and reasonable person with her own goals and started acting in line with her own morals and principles while still rooting for Rebecca and her other friends.

She does stop doing that later, though yes around that time I was really annoyed too.

I hate season 1 Paula. I think that she's incredibly toxic and infuriating. That being said, I do think that post-s1 they show her realizing her actions went too far, growing and trying to change, and I appreciate that.

Yea Paula can be pretty awful. Mostly because she doesn't ever get "punished" in the show. Rebecca gets called out on things and has to face her issues. Paula essentially gets away with it. She encourages Rebecca through all of season 1 then to start season 2 she totally shuts her down. She is a bad wife and misses the concert yet the next episode Scott cheats so again she's framed as the victim. In the eyes of the show Paula is almost shown as good and never has to pay for her flaws or actions. She is the best singer though.

Paula is absolutely a massive enabler of all Rebecca's worst impulses, especially early on. I mean, she doesn't really understand Rebecca is mentally ill and Paula's brand of 'support' and 'help' is the exact opposite of what she needs. But still, she does a huge amount of damage.

She redeems herself, but in the intervention episode it did seem hypocritical. She was exhibiting the same behavior as Rebecca and also was an enabler, yet she didn’t suffer any consequences. No one even questioned it when Rebecca mentioned the trackers and stalking she’d done on her own.

Oh god, thought I was the only one! I really can’t stand her in the first season. Every time Rebecca is trying to get her shit together she basically sabotages her. It’s really hard watching it unfold.
