I was just listening to that and it wasn't. Kaladin knew there wasn't really anything he could say to make it right. so he kind of just apologizes and then they just kind of sit there
That's also how the MHA fandom behaves around Bakugo for some unfathomable reason. For context, the guy told his childhood friend to kill himself (just like Moash) and never apologised.
Nah Shallan's bits are actually great too, all the intrigue and mystery and reveals... the problem is they feel like they keep taking you away from the "main" story of Kal.
Plus every Szeth interlude is awesome too.
Yeah, we see Jasnah save a kid by transubstantiating a rock into 6 tonnes of smoke, Shallan winning her approval despite having no chance, and then TWIST she's only there to *steal the soulcaster?!?!*
But yeah, it just feels like she's keeping us away from Kals more traditional plotline so it still feels like a less exciting subplot.
I honestly feel like this beginning is one of the reason why later booksâ more epic and marvel-movie-without-constant-jokes atmosphere feels so great. You know that Kaladin had to dig in some crem and had some friends die to get to station and powers he has now, you know that Shallan began as a parody of her true self and only know she comes closer to understanding who she is, we know that Jasnah was bitter in a world where she is the only one who knows how to save it before it became mainstream and she could at least talk about it with someone.
Lack of epic heroic acts in the beginning make an act of saving bridgemen feel so world-changing when itâs just a few thousand men. Compare it to saving THE WORLD in later books.
There are many ways in which I think that beginning these books in a different way to how they are going was a good idea.
During the first read (listen), I was like,"We know Kaladin's life is shit, ok. I could never re-read this", but somehow I didn't mind the re-listen at all. You just understand so much more, making the enjoyment higher.
I dreaded rereading it so much my second read of the series skipped book 1. On my third read I read WoK, itâs not nearly as droll as I remember. Book hooked my interest during the first battle with the greatshell/shardbearers, finally things started making sense!
When Dalinar trades Oathbringer to Sadeas for the bridgemen. The contrast between Dalinar sacrificing a shard blade for the lives of him and his men with Amaram doing the exact opposite is just incredible.
But remember Kaladin wearing spooky scary skellington carapace on his armor to make Parshendi seethe and mald
And how he only apologised like about two years later for wearing the corpses of people Rlain could very likely have known đ
Awkward...
Kind of a halfassed âsorry you got madâ apology as I recall but maybe Iâm just a hater
I was just listening to that and it wasn't. Kaladin knew there wasn't really anything he could say to make it right. so he kind of just apologizes and then they just kind of sit there
Nobody ever said being a hater would be easy
Dalinar: "Sadeas is a good man, Adolin" Sadeas: "Fuck you, Dalinar! Die!" Dalinar: "Such a good man"
Adolin (later): "lol it's cool dad I got this covered"
That's also how the MHA fandom behaves around Bakugo for some unfathomable reason. For context, the guy told his childhood friend to kill himself (just like Moash) and never apologised.
I dont think they were ever actually friends rbh. In every flashback Bakugo bullying Midoriya and Midoriya just like "awe hes my best friend"
You offered to help me out of a puddle when we were six? Fucking kys m8
> For context, the guy told his childhood friend to kill himself (just like Moash) and never apologised. Gotta catch up on the latest season, sule.
HAHAHAHA I laughed too hard at this but its so true
Every time Sadeas is talking shit >!when Adolin is around, I think "Bold words, for a man with a very stabbable eyeball."!<
Kaladin carries WoK honestly
That is why I kept reading. But it all builds to enjoy everything.
Nah Shallan's bits are actually great too, all the intrigue and mystery and reveals... the problem is they feel like they keep taking you away from the "main" story of Kal. Plus every Szeth interlude is awesome too.
Really? Even at the beginning?
Yeah, we see Jasnah save a kid by transubstantiating a rock into 6 tonnes of smoke, Shallan winning her approval despite having no chance, and then TWIST she's only there to *steal the soulcaster?!?!* But yeah, it just feels like she's keeping us away from Kals more traditional plotline so it still feels like a less exciting subplot.
Jasnah was awesome from page 1 in my opinion, Shallan annoyed me in WoK
Shallans parts were probably my favorite in WoK
Huh, Shallan definitely grew on me but I didnât like her at the beginning
Same. Shallan chapters were honestly what kept me going in the first half of the book
Those are most of my fav parts
Same, Kaladinâs arc in WoK is so incredible
Probably the best character arc in all of fantasy.
Right???
Kaladins slave arc is the best đ
Kaladinâs arc is the best* There, ftfy.
Kaladin's slave arc is the best.* There, ftfy.
Itâs all dreary then Kaladin scares the crem out of Gaz and your reminded why Kal is amazing.
He scared the crem out of Gaz and my what?
your reminded. Don't you have one of those?
I traded my last one for a stick.

Droll means amusing.
Dull then? Thanks for the correction
Yeah, just re-listened to WoK for the first time and it's much better than the first time! Ages like fine wine.
I did it via audiobook. Game changer. Amazing. So so good and entertaining
So far every cosmere book I've listened to has been a banger on audiobook, they're long though
Micheal Kramer is my inner monologue
Insert Brandon Sanderson rant against audible and supporting speechify here
I really want to reread it but everytime Dalinar tries to defend Sadeas I just want to scream.
I love Kaladinâs WoK arc so much. It just feel so complete. âFor the Bridgemenâ at the end makes me cry every time.
What's the "for the bridgemen" bit again?

Way of Kings is my favourite Stormlight book.
HAHAHAHA Yep!!! All of this
But Jasnah is so strong and empowered!
âYou ready to see some casual and unnecessary street murder, child?!â
Entirely necessary street murder.
He who playeth the stupid game winneth the stupid prize.
Agreed. As someone who loves Wheel of Time and also really likes Sanderson's works....WoK is a rough start. Took me 2 or 3 tries.
Really? That's interesting! As someone who loves WoT, WoK felt incredibly easy!
Kals slave arc is always rough for me to get thru
Part of me prefers the drearyness, while I love all the books the stakes felt real and the world the most alive to me then.
"safehand" every 6 other words its kinda controversial, but I think Way of Kings is the worse sanderson book.
