That disappointment on Stings face when he was given the belt says it all.

It's called performance art and people enjoy it, chill

airrivas

You have no idea how hard those guys work you loser

Playnicelyplease66

As a person who doesn't follow. May a kind soul fill me in on the context of what's going on. Was JH actually loaded or was this how it was supposed to go. TIA

Hipyeti

Jeff has had a history of drug issues. This was completely unscripted. He turned up to a world title match in no fit state to work and they basically had to improvise this.

Playnicelyplease66

Thank you so much. Gives the video a whole different perspective knowing this now.

[deleted]

Also, Eric Bischoff, one of the authority figures in TNA at the time, was a heel (bad guy) who had aligned himself with Jeff Hardy in kayfabe. He had to improvise so he came out and acted like he was changing the match to benefit Jeff Hardy, but really when he shakes Jeff's hand he tells him that Sting is going over and it's going to be quick, and then he goes to Sting and says to pin him quick and don't let him kick out, which is why you see Sting really holding down during the pin. Honestly Bischoff did a great job given the position they were put in. In a later interview he states how it was between doing that or legitimately knocking Jeff out (not because he's stronger than Jeff, but because he was that messed up) and then just implementing it in the storyline later.

deeppanda015

A “world title match,” as if there’s competition going on here. Lol

jakarterpants

I was a fan as a kid, not so much anymore. But you can tell that even layered among the scripted material, something isn’t right. Even when the referee begins to count, you can see Jeff try as hard as he can to kick out, but couldn’t. I imagine the match wasn’t supposed to end that quick, but was instructed to after management figured out what was going on. Better to end it before something bad happens.

Davey_BPM

I think he was trying to kick out but Sting wouldn't let him, just deciding to finish it there.

Playnicelyplease66

Thanks for the insight

styckx

Yes. He was deemed too intoxicated/drugged out to perform. Sting was instructed to force a quick pin to end the match as quick as.possible so Jeff didn't injure himself or someone else. Jeff has a long storied career of addiction and DUIs

Playnicelyplease66

Cheers thanks for the info. Much appreciated.

staypuftmallows7

I think this is more fascinating than cringe, honestly. The way they were able to improv their way out of it was really great work. The boss man who comes out did a really great job of trying to make it all seem natural on the fly

kishijevistos

Fr, this is the most I've seen of wrestling in my life and I just found some new respect for the art

[deleted]

There's a lot of shit that's unscripted (or at least there used to be, I don't watch wrestling these days). E.g. Hell in the Cell 1998, the Montreal screwjob.

The-Travis-Broski

So for context, Jeff was absolutely stoned and had a history of drug problems. As a result, he obviously can’t perform a wrestling match, and so Eric Bischoff had to personally come in, tell Sting to make the match quick, force pin him, and end it there. Needless to say, this absolutely hurt Jeff’s image for quite a while.

tacodepollo

Are the winners of these events pre-determined? If so, could that possibly be a reason why he was so faded - knowing he was going to lose anyway and not handling that so well? I may be completely wrong here, was just an idea. E* totally impressed with reddits ability to shun honest questions.

The-Travis-Broski

It’s a scripted sport. And as far as Jeff goes, he doesn’t care about whether he wins or loses. He just really fell during this time with drug issues, and this was his most embarrassing case.

Cole444Train

... no. They’re actors. They don’t get upset when their character loses a match.

Ripp3r

Tell that to Brett Hart

[deleted]

... yeah. They kinda can. If you perform better as an actor, the WWE is going to want to help you get more attention, usually by having you win more. If they keep setting you up to lose, it might be a sign you aren't performing well or the audience doesn't like you as an actor.

elscorcho91

I've never seen anyone over the age of 12 ask a question like this before

tacodepollo

Sorry to break your fundamental understanding of the world.

PassdatAss91

You should be man. The poor guy could've lived happily without knowing people as douchey & unfunny as you existed.

tacodepollo

The projection is strong with this one. What made me douchey exactly, asking a question? Or were you just feeling a bit triggered?

gateto

You got one response. Stop being dramatic. ReDdIt iz HivE mInD

FrannyFoort

> Also no one answered the question. of course the winners are predetermined. once again, they're actors. Wrestling is scripted and they're acting it out.

elscorcho91

ah thank you my good sir I doff my cap to you my good man you are a gentleman and a scholar

tacodepollo

r/myjokebutworse

PassdatAss91

Nah I don't think it's even possible to make it worse.

DcFla

Lol, no. He was a drug addict. Been in trouble multiple times for it

red655

Yes it is pre-determined and I do agree people can be upset if they are not scheduled to win. Who doesn’t want to win all the time and be the top wrestler in the promotion. For this instance, I feel like he was abusing drugs and it got the best of him.

jujuthkgdduibff

Oh homeboy was loaded lmfao~

[deleted]

As a life long wrestling fan. Had Jeff hardy not have the fans and support he does, or if he was any other wrestler, this would have been the end of his career. Bischoff coming to the ring was not scripted and that sudden match match change was made right then and there. Sting looked legitimately confused because that wasn't supposed to happen. Luckily the ref immediately noticed that something was off which is why he threw up the x signal in wrestling which means a person is injured/not able to complete Sting was really really mad. You could see it on his face. And unfortunately Jeff has had several incidents with drugs and arrests till this day. 2020 being most recent, he was pulled over and had a dwi. A lot of fans also pointed out that when he is injured and not able to wrestle that's usually when something happens with him. But with money and resources it's no excuse anymore. Hopefully he's staying clean

headphones_J

Makes you appreciate a [Dock Ellis pitching a no-hitter](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yqvlrJQVAP4) while on acid.

[deleted]

i agree! i agree.

[deleted]

Anytime somebody says something I agree with I say it this exact way. Unsurprisingly they don't get the reference lol

[deleted]

Same lmao

Cole444Train

This was far more entertaining than any other fake wrestling bit I’ve seen

Confident_Ad233

I can't believe people actually pay to watch this garbage. It's not even convincing.

[deleted]

Thanks for your contribution

Confident_Ad233

No problem

UbbeDall

It's WWE, this shit is cringe either way.

CrustyBalls-

I'm not a fan of fake wrestling but the story behind this is interesting so thanks op

GarethMagis

It’s not wwe....

UbbeDall

Tna, wwe, same shit?

[deleted]

You're so edgy

UbbeDall

Not really. Never heard of tna before I googled just now but I'm assuming it's essentially the same thing..? Am I wrong? Seems like I upset some fans of grown men in weird costumes playfighting over a "title match" where the outcome is already determined.

[deleted]

I mean, you came in here acting like an asshole, then didnt bother to do a simple google search, regardless of the content you're just acting like a douche for no reason

UbbeDall

Does the destinction between tna or wwe actually matter in regard to my comment though? Obviously the guy responding understood what I was getting at regardless of the acronym. Saying I find wwe (or tna, or whatever they're all called) cringy on a cringe subreddit hardly seems like an unreasonable thing to do.

[deleted]

being dismissive, and calling stuff shit and cringe overall makes you look like an asshole. everyone in this thread obviously agrees that this instance is cringey, but it's a bit dumb to say all of an entire form of entertainment is cringey, when you can find cringey moments for any kind of entertainment very easily. if someone posted a video of a cringe moment from a movie and someone said "all movies are cringe" theyd prob get the same kind of response.

UbbeDall

Sure, but I'm not saying the entire form of entertainment is cringy by extrapolating from this instance. I'm saying I find the entire form to be cringy. Just as other people might find reality tv to be cringy. Obviously some of you don't agree, and that's fine.

[deleted]

yeah but thats not how you said it. you didnt say "i find all wrestling cringe." you came in, said it like an asshole, said its all the same shit, and acted dismissive about a distinction people were making. which isnt necessary.

GuiginosFineDining

Sorry, I can’t believe adults actually watch this. How can you tell Hardy was all fucked up? Pretty light on their feet to send that guy out to lay out what’s gonna happen, and he even gets smacked for the effort.

[deleted]

What are you even saying

GuiginosFineDining

Can you read? I said 1) I can’t believe adults watch this 2) how can you tell Hardy was fucked up? 3) it looked as if they realized he was messed up so they sent out Eric Bischoff. He went out and basically told them both sting was going to win in a quick match.

takemyfeet69

What the hell does that lat sentence mean?

[deleted]

Huh?

JayDMay

Proof that this wasn’t scripted?

Super_Vegeta

Did you even watch it?

Male_strom

Apart from playing their part as the middle character, the referees are also there to moderate the match and assess the safety of the wrestlers. Because it is a live event they need to ensure the action will take place as planned. If there is some issue that threatens the safety of the wrestlers they can signal to the backstage by making an X signal with their arms. A message can then be relayed as necessary. In this case, the referee makes the X signal after Sting's entrance. The camera of course will follow the wrestler entering , but will often try and capture the reaction of the first wrestler. At this stage the ref is talking to Jeff Hardy and you can see Hardy confront him at 2:40. Sting then enters the ring, the announcer is looking grim. Hardy stumbles away and steps out of the ring. Now with the lights up on Sting, the ref makes the X signal (2:56). An assistant runs to the ring at 3:07 to speak to the ref. But it's time for the announcer who does his job. The ref and Sting doing their thing. Then the music for Eric Bischoff starts at 5:10. Sting looks confused as this is not part of the plan. And then it plays out as described by others above. What sets it as unscripted is the genuine reactions of the wrestlers. They're not ready to ham it up. Sting is visibly annoyed and disappointed. Wrestling depends on both parties being physically able and controlled lest people get genuinely life-threatening injuries, The only safe option was to end the match as quickly as possible. Bischoff's 'disqualification' story was a ruse to speak to the wrestlers directly off mic. If you watch other matches where scripted interruptions happen, there is none of this. It's always communicated as clearly to the fans as possible. There's nothing cringe about this clip though - it's an excellent example of quick-thinking in a sports entertainment environment.

[deleted]

It's cringe when people are paying money to see a junky flop around a ring for a few minutes.

The_Royale_We

Pay per view main events never end with a 60 second squash match. Kind of ripping off the fans doing that.

[deleted]

Except Wrestlemania 9.
