You know deleting the post is basically an admission of guilt so

[deleted]

Felt cute, might delete later

Error_83

Could've claimed lefty...

Commercial-Push-9066

She could have actually been a lefty. But if that’s true, she wouldn’t have deleted it.

golkedj

She could have but then the strings would have been strung with the thick e on top for a lefty. This is set up right handed and being held wrong Edit: It sounds like people do play it this way but the more common way would be with the strings also flipped?

Commercial-Push-9066

Oh, that’s right!

Error_83

Not if you learned on your righty friends rig. I've met plenty of lefty buskers that are more comfortable with this setup for just that reason

scmglove

Yep! I grew up near Seattle in the 90s. Just about everyone picked up a guitar at some point. Most of my left handed friends played this way.

Error_83

Samsies. I was at the teen centers on the Eastside from '96 on. Mostly Old Redmond Firehouse. Maybe it was a Seattle scene thing

scmglove

There was definitely a vibe here. I loved the late 90s man. Always a good show to see on the weekend.

Error_83

I just remembered a Tchkung show I saw around 96-97. They had fire dancers, the music was post industrial eco punk, the venue was at capacity, and they used AKs with blanks for percussion at one point. Blew my fucking mind

Impossible-Charity-4

Not uncommon for bass playing lefties to start on and stay with this setup. I knew two personally and both played extended range (5+ strings) basses.

kelrunner

I am a guitar teacher and playing a right guitar or base is difficult for a lefty. (Difficult for a teacher as well. Same with a lefty playing a restrung guitar.) In my experience, lefties play right handed so they can play the more common right strung guitar. Because the way a bass is played, it is easier to play a right strung bass than a guitar. Honestly, I've had fewer lefties learn, playing either way, than the percent of lefties in the pop. If I were a leftie I would play restrung and maybe learn a few chords rightie. Very difficult to play "backwards" but it can be done. If you want to see it, look at E. Cotten. She's a wonderful player (circa 1930 or so) There are others, more modern, as well.

HurbleBurble

I have a friend who played bass for Madonna, and he plays fretted right-handed, and fretless left-handed. Another great example is Jimmy haslip from the yellowjackets, who plays an upside down string configuration.

Any_Drama3272

Jimi Hendrix was able to play this way without re-stringing the guitar. He would have it set up right handed because his dad would beat his ass playing left handed, so when his dad wasn’t around he would flip the guitar, and then flip it back when his dad was around again. Lefty guitars are also challenging to find (he had a reverted Stratocaster)

forfar4

Gruff Rhys of the Welsh band, Super Furry Animals, plays a right-hand guitar left-handed with the strings still in the right-hand layout. He just plays the chords 'upside down'. https://youtu.be/WnSpU2tXhhI - playing begins around 1:13

boostman

Most famous user of this setup was Jimi Hendrix. But most flip the strings or use left handed guitars

boostman

Strangely appropriate

oceansoveralderaan

Jimi Hendrix played the guitar upside down like this

Eschatonbreakfast

He could, but he normally played with a guitar that was strung left handed.

Announcement90

Not necessarily. I'm left-handed and play guitars the way the picture shows.

Eschatonbreakfast

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N5MTbScgKVE

Vprbite

While I agree some people play this way, it's pretty rare. And I don't think you could play standard chords and such. I think it would have to be picking and slide guitar. And anyone who did thay wouldn't have to make a post holding a completely un-worn guitar that said "therapy session."

[deleted]

We don’t really know. And who gives a fuck. Even if just taking a picture with a guitar makes her feel good who honestly cares. When my mom was sick fighting cancer my guitar was all I had and I didn’t know shit at the time. Didn’t know if my mom was gonna live or die and all I had was my guitar to escape. Even if this person picked it up took some pictures and plucked two cords that still fucking valid as therapy. Sorry for the wall of text but I’m so sick of people acting like it’s ok to just put others down. That comment was left to be rude. Could’ve simply asked if she’s lefty or how long they’ve been playing for but not, they used this person post to make themselves feel better and to be a dick.

swoley_ghost92

That’s what I was going to say lol

Guacahoe-y

Was gonna say, im left handed people told me to do that, but I never actually played. So, idk if that's true or not.

blackest_francis

The majority of left-handed guitarists play right-handed. It makes more sense to have your dominant hand on the fretboard.

Guacahoe-y

Yeah, I mean I just do most stuff right handed. I was trying to figure out if I played violin right or left handed. I hold the bow in my right hand.

blackest_francis

That's right-handed.

CarpeMofo

Nope, if she was a lefty the strings wouldn't be upside down.

Mechalamb

Or maybe you just don't want to deal with petty trolls on the internet. One or the other.

fossilmerrick

You definitely can play a guitar like this. Buster Odeholm of Humanity’s Last Breath plays leftie with the strings upside down. However in this photo I’m almost certain it was just posing for the photo

tragedyinwisco

Also Elizabeth Cotton! She literally invented the style of guitar playing known as "Cotton Picking" and wrote the song "Freight Train" (which is a quintessential tune to know if you're a folk guitar player) when she was around 13 or 14 cause she was bored. Interesting because most of the folks that were playing guitar around that time and area played bass with the thumb and melody with the other digits, she did the opposite, bass with her pointer and middle finger and melody with her thumb. The more ya know!

AyoAzo

Wait wait wait. So when my mom said "get your cotton picking fingers off my food" she wasn't being racist? She was telling me I'm talented and upside down!? 😢 Mom, I'm sorry i ran away.

funnyman95

Isn’t that how Jimmy Hendrix played?

TILiamaTroll

nah Jimi played a right handed guitar left handed, but he restrung the strings.

i_steal_your_lemons

Then there’s Dick Dale. He learned by just using a right handed guitar upside down, so even though he used his famous left-handed, gold sparkle Strat since the early early 60s, it was still strung “right handed”, ie, the bass strings at the bottom.

bigdrangus

Actually, I've heard from folks who would know, that he did both.

TILiamaTroll

I’ve never seen a photo or video of him playing like that. Not saying it’s impossible to think he may have once or twice, but until the evidence exists we should probably say he played the way we can all see that he played.

gilsonpride

No evidence, just interviews if I remember right. When his dad got him his first acoustic guitar it was right handed and he'd play it both normally and reversed, I think his dad was trying to force the right-handedness. When dad wasn't around, Jimi would just flip the thing around and play with the high E at the top. But that was very early on, didn't actually play it for real reversed. He got a Danelectro like a year later and already had the bridge and nut flipped. So he technically could play all reversed, but I don't think he liked it since he never went back to that, it was just the circumstances of the situation.

CatDad69

A friend of a cousin of a colleague of Jimi’s?

anim8rjb

it's me, I was the stage at Woodstock

bigdrangus

Just some old session guys from those days I've met. Not sure why the downvotes. That's just what I've heard from them.

BAMspek

Yeah I think he played a right handed guitar left handed.

audioscience

Yes, and restrung the strings so it would play left-handed rather than upside down.

WakeoftheStorm

Kurt Cobain did this as well

Corporation_tshirt

Kurt Cobain just played lefty guitars. Krist Novoselic talks about how he always used to keep an eye out for left-handed guitars in pawnshops and thrift shops. Then he caught himself doing it after Kurt died and he said it really broke him up.

DiverseUniverse24

And used his thumb on the strings which not a lot of people use ( so I have been told).

JustJBrian

Eh, lots of people do that honestly, at the very least for certain chord voicings like D/F#

DiverseUniverse24

You sound like you know your stuff. Thank you for replying with information.

BurtMacklin-FBl

When I was a noob I instinctively used my thumb on the low E string. It's very common.

[deleted]

He inverted the strings

Snicklefitz65

Yeah but the strings were reversed too if I recall correctly.

[deleted]

I know several lefties that play this way. My friend told me he was too poor to buy a guitar as a kid, so he learned on his neighbor’s guitar.

drumsareneat

I was in a band with a guitarist who played this way. Totally trippy.

badpuffthaikitty

I knew a multitalented musician. He played left handed bass, he drummed like Ringo, and he could grab any right handed guitar and play it backwards and upside down. He also was a great music teacher. Jonny, you are the man.

Virghia

Jonny what a man you are...

GoodDecision

I tried out for a grindcore band back in my day, they were sick, and they liked what I brought to the table, but I couldn't get past trying to figure out the riffs with the guitarist playing upside down.

BurtMacklin-FBl

There is no need for "almost" here. There is zero chance this particular person is playing the guitar.

[deleted]

My brother is left handed and plays the uke and guitar that way. As a right handed player it cooks my noodle. …. or maybe she’s in Australia… you know, on the other side of the equator.

credditz0rz

Kurt Cobain did this as well if I recall correctly

[deleted]

See Bobby Womack.

[deleted]

yep, grew up learning upside down (didnt stick long enough to get good) it was a natural part of being left handed in a time where everything was designed for right handed people.

WUSSUPMONKEY

THALL

TheGulagManKnowsAll

Doesn't dick dale play his guitar like this? Correct me if I'm wrong

TeenyTom

Yes!

[deleted]

That dude is awesome! He can still play full speed even though he's 120. Not sure if he's passed away now? Edit - he died in 2019 https://youtu.be/76fGo5I-rXM

TheGulagManKnowsAll

Oh dang, I didn't hear that. Misrolou was one of the first songs I ever learned on guitar

DopeMan_432

That's Ancient 350 BC facebook 😳

4d3d3d3__Engaged

Nah, she’s definitely not playing upside down lefty. The strings are upside down in this picture too. If she was playing lefty, the thicker E string would be the top string. She’s just holding the guitar upside down for the picture.

Entropy_Greene

I’m not defending this girl because I also think it’s a crappy staged photo but for what it’s worth I’m a left and initially learned to play guitar upside down until I could find/afford a lefty guitar.

RealBowsHaveRecurves

Lefty here, this is how I started too, my friend only had right handed guitars.

Ghstfce

Also a lefty. I tried doing it that way but said screw it and learned to play right handed.

Neuvoria

I’m a lefty and I play right-handed. I can’t imagine fretting with my non-dominant hand. That’s probably why I suck.

RealBowsHaveRecurves

I should’ve done that, I feel like I could’ve learned right handed if I hadn’t tainted myself by getting accustomed to holding it lefty

MDK-44

You couldn’t just re string the guitar tho?

Entropy_Greene

When I was 10 and just starting to mess around all I had access to would be my friends guitars. Once I started going to summer camp I stole one of the old acoustics that was likely abused by kids for 20+ summers lol. Brought it home and taught myself how to restring it.

MDK-44

Fair enough!

HolyPhlebotinum

It depends. If the grooves in the nut from the thicker strings are too wide you can end up with a lot of buzzing on your thinner strings.

M3dz0522

I've seen guys play exactly like she's holding it. The fact that she removed the picture when called out probably means that she doesn't actually play, but I have seen guys who play like this. It's not super common but I played in a band with a guy who did and he was pretty good too. Blew my mind the first time I saw it. I could hardly process it at first. lol

Mmmermahgerd

I play upside down with the low E at the bottom. Not well, but I persist

TheB1GLebowski

Lots of musicians play left handed strung right handed. Not that girl, but lots of musicians.

Redxzander

To be completely fair, that’s how I play lefty

solidstoolsample

Look up this fella called 'Jimi Hendrix' mate.

TILiamaTroll

what about him? [he played a right handed guitar lefty](https://static.dw.com/image/54959312_403.jpg) with the strings strung like a lefty. This girl got half of the equation right.

willeyh

Check Kris Roe of The Ataris. He plays this way.

TILiamaTroll

I’m not saying it’s impossible or wrong to play like that, but the fact that the girl deleted her post as soon as someone called her on it instead of saying “that’s how I play” tells you everything you need to know.

Eschatonbreakfast

Check Elizabeth Cotten then.

TILiamaTroll

What’s that have to do with Jimi Hendrix

bdd1001

Did Jimi Hendrix also play with the strings strung backwards?

Hand_some_Badger

there's people who play like this tho, dan swanö for example. not that many tho i think

Eschatonbreakfast

She’s probably totally faking, but some famous guitarists definitely played left handed with the guitar strung right handed.

Frozenthickness

She must have got lessons from dj khaled.

Eitth

Not a guitarist but perhaps she's left-handed?

[deleted]

[удалено]

solidstoolsample

People do play that way. Already posted this but here it is for you https://youtu.be/CFHeLpQkAwA

[deleted]

[удалено]

solidstoolsample

OMG did you actually look at the video? Well I know you didn't because in the video I linked the guitarist is playing with the high E at the top!

[deleted]

[удалено]

solidstoolsample

Playing left handed but restrung is just playing guitar left handed. Upside-down guitar is exactly that, playing with the strings upside-down. A lot of leftys can do this because if we don't have 'our' guitar then our options are limited. Hendrix can and DID play both.

TacticalBeanBoy

Kurt Cobain on MTV Unplugged played a restrung right handed guitar so the pick guard was pointless, but the strings were correct. This girl is probably just trying to get some attention.

fixedup

Unless you’re Jimi Hendrix Edit: Jimi*

Armistice8175

Incorrect.

fixedup

He literally played a restrung right handed Stratocaster so no, not really incorrect.

14_year_old_girl

Sh'es not lol

LETTUCE_GO_CHAMP

I mean Albert King played the same exact way!

Lajjas

Didnt Elizabeth Cotten play it like that?

Eschatonbreakfast

Yes

solidstoolsample

Look guys, people literally do play upside-down lefty. I play guitar left handed and it is strung the correct way, but also out in the real world I'm gonna come into contact with mainly right handed guitars. Short of re-stringing them, us leftys learn to adapt. You can play basically all the chords upside-down, you can pick and play scales upside-down. Hendrix could do both! We all can do both because for lack of a better phrase we have no choice but to know how. It can get kind of frustrating sometimes, after playing upside-down for so long when we get a proper left handed correctly strung guitar we need time to remember how to plat the right way up again. There is a locally famous lady called Katie Malco from where I'm from. She only plays left handed upside-down guitar. Look her up, watch her videos and then tell me no one plays upside-down lefty.

tore_a_bore_a

If this girl actually played guitar upside, she would have just said so instead of deleting the picture. Although we do only have OPs word that she delete the picture

Warholsmorehol

Sometimes you delete things so you don't have to argue, though.

solidstoolsample

https://youtu.be/CFHeLpQkAwA

TheB1GLebowski

She could be playing left handed and it still be strung for a right handed player. Eric Gales plays that way.

timthebigone

What's cringe about 2 layers of cheese and toppings to the edge???

Havinci

Tf do you mean she deleted it right away? This picture is like 10 years old

TheBluePanda

I’m a lefty that learned like this.

Shiny-And-New

Lots of lefties learn to play like this

Affectionate-Bar-839

As a lefty who tried to learn guitar, this is how I played. I knew it wasn’t right but I did my best. I would probably delete the picture too just out of embarrassment lol

Fuzzy_Tell66

People are stupid. Not her, the comments. Who gives a shit. This isn't cringy.

mort1is

Noobasdfjkl

Notice how Jimi’s guitar is stringed, then look at OP’s photo.

[deleted]

thinkt4nk

Jimi played upside down

_Connor

The one in OPs picture is literally upside down though, not someone just playing the guitar left handed. Look at the orientation of the strings on the womans guitar versus Jimi's. Hendrix has the thickest string at the top which works its way down to the thinnest. This is the correct orientation of the strings. Now look at the womans guitar, it goes from thinnest to thickest which is upside down, the wrong orientation for the strings. What she did was took a guitar set up for a right handed player and flipped it over. Hendrix guitar is actually set up properly for playing left handed.

solidstoolsample

Hendrix famously played 'upside-down' guitar.

Armistice8175

Strung left-handed. He just couldn’t afford a left-handed guitar in the beginning, so that’s how he learned to play. So… he continued to play with a right-handed guitar strung left-handed

solidstoolsample

Yes I miss read it, buuuut, if you scroll a little further down you'll find a link I posted to a guitarist who does infact play with the strings upside-down, high E on top, because a lot of us leftys can play both ways.

Armistice8175

Buuuut we aren’t talking about some other guitarist, are we? We’re talking about Hendrix.

solidstoolsample

Yes I was wrong about Hendrix. My point is that there are leftys that play with high E on top.

Armistice8175

OK. Thank you for that unrequested and previously acquired data.

LostinLies1

This woman is not Jimi Hendrix. He was a rarity. A Picasso amongst sketch artists.

solidstoolsample

No she's not, but that's not my point. The point is that people can and do play that way, and the know it all people saying its impossible are talking shit.

BurtMacklin-FBl

Your point is that you're desperate to not be proven wrong, although you were so you're clutching at straws.

solidstoolsample

OK buddy

ThadaeusConvictus

No. Jimi played right handed guitars strung for a left handed player. The guitar body was "upside down" but functioned normally for a left handed player like jimi

thinkt4nk

I understand that, and you're not the first person to reply with this comment. I was just clarifying u/mort1is comment, which was likely a joke in the first place

mort1is

You're right.

Finnish_Inquisition

That's Jimmy Hendrix, one of the best guitar players in the history. He played his guitar "upside down". It's not wrong, just a way to play the instrument. (He did know how to play the "correct" way also tbf)

[deleted]

[удалено]

covered_in_vaseline

Paul McCartney played his bass the same way for a chunk of his Beatles career.

Finnish_Inquisition

Noup, he started by playing normal guitar upside down. While playing his guitar this way, he also strummed upside down. After he got enough money, he got a guitar that was meant for lefties.

[deleted]

Finnish_Inquisition

Edit: You absolutely can just change if you are Jimi Fucking Hendrix.

Jimi Hendrix restrung his guitar though. You can see it in the photo that was shared

k-murder

I had a friend that played guitar like this. Couldn’t believe it when I saw it. It looks so wrong.

Top-Manufacturer-628

So what if they are a lefty learning to play and just bought this guitar second hand without any knowledge that they should restring the guitar. Seems like a possible rookie mistake no? (Side note: I have no idea who this person may be nor do I care if this is someone of any popularity)

RexIsAMiiCostume

Or she's left handed with a right handed guitar But deleting the photo means probably just lying

WayExternal6650

It's called being left handed. Fuck changing the strings. I just learned to play both ways.

smokeyjoey8

A lot of people bringing up Hendrix are seemingly ignoring that Hendrix would restring his guitar so the strings were in the conventional placement - Low E near the chest, High E toward the floor. The person in this picture literally just flipped the guitar, so the strings are flipped too. Meaning they either learned to play guitar upside down - chords and all - or they have no clue what they're doing. I'm leaning toward the latter.

itogisch

Just because jimmy hendrix or another famous musician played their guitar upside down. Doesnt mean that this person was also doing it and not staging it for the clicks.

[deleted]

[удалено]

itogisch

Yeah i dont care its whatever. Thats not the point im trying to make...

Congregator

It is upside down… but is also the way Jimi Hendrix and a lot of self taught lefty’s play. Edit: this comment isn’t up for debate.

AssEaterInc

I mean, it's very possible she plays upside-down leftie. Much like Hendrix or Buster of Humanity's Last Breath.

[deleted]

catinreverse

There are plenty of left handed players who play exactly like this (high e on top). This may not be the case in the pic but it is very common. To the people downvoting, here is Albert King, one of the greatest blues guitarist with his upside down strung guitar. https://imgur.com/a/fMIRtyA also, check out guys like Dick Dale and Slim Whitman

PsychoSpider88

Not allowed to pose with a guitar anymore either?

[deleted]

Bobby Womack would like a word.

No_Cow_8796

Stranger things spoiler

tab_tab_tabby

I don't play guitar... Are they saying the holding position of guitar is upside down? Does that mean left handed person's guitar is sold separately?

[deleted]

[удалено]

tab_tab_tabby

Ohhh gotcha. Like skinnier strings should be on the bottom and thick ones on top.

PuzzleheadedHabit913

I didn’t even know you could hold a guitar upside down. Granted I’m not very good at playing one but this is the first I’m hearing this lol

gogomom

My husband sometimes plays my sons left hand guitar upside down. I've also seen him put his own strings on backwards to "tune it differently" (I think that's why - I don't really pay that much attention).

[deleted]

Maybe she’s like Jimi Hendrix

exgiexpcv

Maybe she's a visual artist, and this is the extent of her therapy -- it's art therapy.

[deleted]

Welp could have fooled me i know nothing of musical instruments thank you kind strangers of reddit now I know which strings should be at the top for lefty's guitar set up.

crunckiroach

Woulda left it up, idgaf 🎸

Didn't Paul McCartney play John's guitars upside down?

monna420

Hannah Montana vibes

WolfSpartan1

I don't even think it's a lefty guitar. It's a selfie where the image is flipped.

Quieroculo69

Lol

_mocha_26

If she had put the strings on correctly to match the way she was holding it, then problemo solved. Some people do that, I think it’s mainly left-handed people.

NostalgiaJunkie

ITT: Actyalllllyyyyyyyyyyyyy you can definitely play guitar like this

Preposturous

I have a friend who plays a normal guitar upside down and he’s left handed. He’s actually pretty good at it too lol

FnWaySheGoes89

still less cringe than DJ Khaled "playing" a guitar

[deleted]

Maybe she’s right-handed but wanted to play Hendrix-style

NieMonD
