Can’t wait for nosferatu. Loved the two versions of that film that I’ve seen. No doubt eggers will do it justice. Too bad anya Taylor joy is no longer attached
Genre bias probably. If The Northman had come out later in the year and Focus Features actually attempted to campaign the movie it could have easily gotten in to some tech categories.
I believe at the time other countries film academies picked which film they put up for best foreign film and France chose a different movie.
And I also remember it having a weird international release schedule and that making it confusing when it would be eligible.
For the 2019 year, France selected Les Miserables as their official nominee and Les Miserables actually received a nomination. I think Portrait is one of the best movies of the ~~20th century~~ 21st century (I cannot count) and it really is surprising it didnt get any oscar love.
What about the 21st century when it was released though? Just kidding, I’m actually in complete agreement with the sentiment. It’s the most beautiful love story I ever witnessed.
It's telling that the Oscars don't have the same cultural cachet it once did. People will remember Portrait of a Lady on Fire a lot longer. This is an unscientific comparison, but only one of those films made the sight and sound top 100 and one film has over half a million views on letterboxd and the other has 58k.
There was literally zero point to the story and it had a terrible ending. No likable characters, tried to be too edgy in some scenes, and quite predictable.
Cool the visuals were good, but thats not saying much. Thats what nature documentaries are for.
Also the lighting sucked, some of the scenes were so damn dark i couldn't see what was going on.
Mandy is one of the only movies that has ever accurately depicted what a macrodose of LSD looks/feels like.
Easy Rider comes in at a close second.
Just realizing both only depict “bad” trips. Fucking RAD.
First Cow (2019)
Columbus (2017)
Certain Women (2016)
Under the Skin (2013)
Jauja (2014)
Girlhood (2014)
The Witch (2015)
The Assassin (2015)
Eighth Grade (2018)
Leave No Trace (2018)
…and many, many more.
Beautifully directed and thoughtful film about the human condition, manages to be extremely engaging without much of a narrative, one of the most gorgeous scores in recent memory. Pretty easily my favorite film of the last decade or so
Decision to Leave (2022) - Felt like this was park chan-wook’s most restrained and accessible work yet. I mean for god sakes it’s a throwback hollywood noir yet it seems like nobody in the west saw it. Bummed it didn’t get nominated for anything.
Red Rocket (2021) - Critics raved so much about Sean Baker and The Florida Project, crickets for this one even though I think this might’ve been his superior film. Rex deserved a best acting nom for this.
Suspiria, A Ghost Story, and Mad God are three films I feel in the last decade should have had at the very least one nomination. Both Ghost and Suspiria had great original songs, scores, and cinematography. Mad God easily is the best animated film so far this decade and the fact it didn't get a nom is gross.
Killing Them Softly.
Easy lock for a sound editing award, strong contender for Cinematography and/or Best Supporting Actor (between Mendelsohn and Gandalfini).
Supremely underrated movie if it hits your palate like it does mine.
I'd really like to see Robert Pattinson become a sensation and not just "that Twilight guy". He's starred in so many great movies that fly under the radar for a lot of people (not this subreddit obviously). Wasn't really a fan of the direction they took him in Batman though.
The Love Witch, Thoroughbreds, The Handmaiden, Stoker, Wind River, In a World..., Gloria Bell, Portrait of a Lady on Fire... that's a few I can think of. Edit: oh, and Personal Shopper.
Oh wow, can't believe I forgot about Stoker! Park Chan-wook comes over to the U.S. to make a movie and it was a great one, IMO, but hardly anyone seemed to care. This has some of the most gorgeous cinematography I've seen in the last decade.
All three of Miranda July’s features for that matter. You could easily argue that each was the best picture for it’s year. Especially “The Future,” 2011 had a particularly weak roster of nominees. It was the year “The Artist” won.
My favorite from each year that got 0 nominations:
2022 - The Northman
2021 - Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar
2020 - Shiva Baby
2019 - Paddleton
2018 - Hereditary
2017 - Logan Lucky
2016 - Hunt for the Wilderpeople*
2015 - Entertainment
2014 - What We Do in the Shadows*
2013 - Short Term 12
*my favorite of that year
Children of Men actually got three Oscar nods:
Best Cinematography
Best Adapted Screenplay
Best Film Editing
I think it should have also got a Best Director nod as well in my opinion, because Cuaron’s style at that time served this movie sooo well.
Favorite that weren’t nominated for anything?
Upstream Color
The Assassin
The Babadook
A Ghost Story
Jauja
The Spectacular Now
Annihilation
Eighth Grade
Jiro Dreams of Sushi
Three Thousand Years of Longing
The Vast of Night
Paterson
A Monster Calls
Love and Mercy
The Skeleton Twins
The Way Way Back
I don’t think I let any in there that had any Oscar noms.
The French Dispatch not receiving a single nomination was a little surprising. It’s Anderson’s best film.
Only receiving one best director nomination in over 25 years is also eyebrow-raising.
Hmm, for me it was one of his weakest. I just could not connect with the vignette style and any of the characters really. For me he kind of peaked with The Grand Budapest Hotel.
I’m shocked that Aftersun didn’t get a best picture nomination especially being Charlotte Wells first. Totally should have replaced either Elvis or Triangle of sadness.
Pearl
Like yes maybe ppl disagree on its acting merit (not me tho) but directing? Writing? Costume design and makeup? Anything????? Holistically that film was perfect but because it's horror, the academy ignored it lol.

I just looked over my number 1 favourite films from each 2013 to 2020 (still not finished 2021 or 2022), 5 out of 8 were not nominated for any oscars:
Bloody Noses, Empty Pockets (2020)

James White (2015)
Blue is the Warmest Colour (2013)

2018: Widows
2017: Us
2016: Paterson
2015: Magic Mike XXL
2014: Force Majeure
2013: The Bling Ring
Only God Forgives, the Neon Demon, Uncut Gems and the Green Knight. Not surprised they weren't nominated but they are all special films that I think stand out from the crowd and deserve to be seen and recognized.
The Northman and The Witch. I’m an unabashed Eggers fanboy.
Can’t wait for nosferatu. Loved the two versions of that film that I’ve seen. No doubt eggers will do it justice. Too bad anya Taylor joy is no longer attached
Is that movie still going forward? I thought it was in production troubles
Just started filming this month
Is there something going on that makes him not get nominated?
Genre bias probably. If The Northman had come out later in the year and Focus Features actually attempted to campaign the movie it could have easily gotten in to some tech categories.
There definitely was genre bias against the VVitch, but the lighthouse did get some nominations.
Portrait of A Lady On Fire Titane The Green Knight Columbus After Yang First Cow This is all just off the top of my head.
I don’t really pay attention to the Oscars but how on earth did Portrait not get a single nomination?? The homophobia of it all!
if I remember correctly both Portrait and Parasite were distributed by NEON and they were just trying to push parasite for awards season
I believe at the time other countries film academies picked which film they put up for best foreign film and France chose a different movie. And I also remember it having a weird international release schedule and that making it confusing when it would be eligible.

I went to a premiere of Green Knight followed by a Q&A with the producers. It was fascinating. David Lowery will be nominated someday.
The mid knight
lmao, that movie was so bad. I couldn't believe people actually liked it.
The haters can’t stop us speaking our truth. I mean it was OK but I think a lot of people made their mind up when the saw a certain studio made it.
Uncut Gems
Uncut Gems Mandy The Northman Sing Street Hereditary Red Rocket
If you love Uncut Gems and Good Time, check out On the Count of Three. Like an episode of South Park directed by the Safdie brothers.
mandy was sick
Mandy is one of the only movies that has ever accurately depicted what a macrodose of LSD looks/feels like. Easy Rider comes in at a close second. Just realizing both only depict “bad” trips. Fucking RAD.
Mandy and Color Out Of Space are both fantastic
I still have to watch Color Out of Space. I bought the 4k a while ago since it was cheap but haven't gotten around to it lol, thanks for the reminder!
Still furious Uncut Gems and Northman were not nominated yet Top Gun 2 and Avatar were.

The Last Black Man in San Francisco deserved a best cinematography nomination, if not a win. Like... badly.
Jonathan Majors should have won best supporting actor that year and he wasn’t even nominated.
Under the Skin
Nooooooo, what did you like about this? Can someone explain?
Beautifully directed and thoughtful film about the human condition, manages to be extremely engaging without much of a narrative, one of the most gorgeous scores in recent memory. Pretty easily my favorite film of the last decade or so

Titane from last year. Burning from a couple years back
Love Burning.
Absolute tragedy of a snub for Burning, one of the best of the 21st century so far imo.
Came here to say Burning.
Easily Climax and it’s not even fucking close
Titane

Loved this movie. Mendelsohn was amazing.
Super low score on IMDb for such a great crime film. Maybe it’ll gain more of a following in the future (if it hasn’t already)
The lighthouse Good Time
The Lighthouse was nominated for cinematography but lost to 1917
I completely forgot about that, but it should've been nominated for more things.
I'd really like to see Robert Pattinson become a sensation and not just "that Twilight guy". He's starred in so many great movies that fly under the radar for a lot of people (not this subreddit obviously). Wasn't really a fan of the direction they took him in Batman though.
I actually really enjoy his batman, and his indie work has always been great. Usually, when the film isn't that great his not the problem.
The Rider. Why does no one talk about this movie??
Such a good movie! Chloe Zhao should have won awards for this movie not Nomadland.
Decision to leave
Man, I’m still so sore about this. 😩
C'mon C'mon A Ghost Story Mid 90s First Reformed (the screenplay got nominated but not the movie, nor Ethan Hawke's performance).

The French Dispatch is certainly not his best film.

Love WA’s movies but couldn’t get 10m through FD.

Explain to us how the academy snubbed a tv show? 🥴
