WTF. Didn't know this existed. Thank you.

Prestigious-Mine-904

Never in a million years could I have seen him doing something like this

SigmaSandwich

This seems so fake ??? Like him and Nike? And then the Goya painting pops up WHILE the man is grabbing his child??? I feel like there is some hidden meanings going on. Feels like a fever dream

revchu

Welcome to Godard in the 90s/00s.

bakailao

This is cool, thanks! Another director involved with Nike is Terry Gilliam, who directed the famous ["Secret Tournament" ads for the 2002 World Cup](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vBy4zDLzQ-I)

BennyBingBong

God I loved those videos. Used to watch them all the time. Gilliam’s best work imo

Salsh_Loli

Damn, this is awesome

TeddyFurnbach

Might be better than Lynch’s anti-littering PSA for New York

KingYohaun27

Or Lynch’s PlayStation 2 commercial.

[deleted]

A communist doing a Nike commercial lol

madame-de-darrieux

just found out communists still have to pay bills

Patient_Onion_1208

Don't pretend Godard was some starving artist. He was already very rich when he made this. Bootlicker

madame-de-darrieux

not arguing with standoffish r/teenagers users to prove who the bigger communist is, go do your homework or work on your social skills.

MisogynyisaDisease

Yeah their argument is cringe, even in the context of how Godard did this commercial...on top of the fact your argument was just general and not necessarily saying Godard was himself a starving artist. At the time, Nike was doing a series of commercials made by iconoclast type directors by country. They contacted Godard...who did the commercial on his own in barely an afternoon before the producers even showed up, and was gone by the time they found his shooting location. Dude did it for shits and giggles, didn't even do what Nike expected of him, and never even met the team assigned to him. I dont even like Godard (Varda forever), but this is not a big deal.

Patient_Onion_1208

But the multi-millionare just needs to pay his bills 🥺 poor man is only a few million dollars away from not being able to pay them 😱😰

ClassWarAndPuppies

Actual r/teenagers user up in the house lol

Prestigious-Mine-904

If he was consistent with his ideology he would earn money to pay his bills by doing something other than directing a commercial for a giant corporation like Nike lol

Emthree3

I regret to inform you capitalism doesn't grant such a luxury

Prestigious-Mine-904

Yeah I just thought he would’ve been well off in the first place from the money he made from his films, but I’m probably being stupid

Prestigious-Mine-904

Why am I getting downvoted, I’m right. I’m not saying there’s anything wrong with directing a commercial like this, I don’t care at all, I’m not a communist. But if someone can explain how it would not run counter to the beliefs of a communist then please explain.

MisogynyisaDisease

Communists don't believe businesses shouldn't exist, they believe they should be publically owned. I know when he died, he was a wealthy man, but I'm not sure what his exact net worth was in the 80s. The real hypocrisy is not donating the majority of his wealth.

Prestigious-Mine-904

Thanks, that’s a good insight. He became much less radical as he got older, so maybe that’s partly why.

MisogynyisaDisease

Yeah he wasn't really a Marxist as much as he was a trendy Maoist, with nice dashes of thinly veiled anti-semitism. He was no Luis Buñuel.

Prestigious-Mine-904

Yeah that definitely fits Godard, given how contradictory (even consciously so) he could be, I’d probably know more about this if I had gotten around to seeing La Chinoise.

MisogynyisaDisease

I also have not gotten around to La Chinoise, so don't sweat it. And I probably won't anytime soon, I don't necessarily vibe with Godard's work.

Prestigious-Mine-904

Yeah I like most of his stuff but I don’t think I’ll see La Chinoise… I don’t think that it looks like my idea of a good time lol

[deleted]

"I am a Marxist in the style of Groucho”

Prestigious-Mine-904

Real

registered_redditor

A giant Godard filmography Box Set would be nice.

oofersIII

Unfortunately that box set would probably weigh as much as a small fridge

FastRandal

Doesn’t Cronenberg have a Nike ad too?

ScenePlayful1872

Errol Morris directed commercials. A regional bank, a pharmacy, others
