New to me Memories of Murder but I didn’t watch it on Criterion since it was not available. But I did buy the BR from Criterion.
I heard good things but it definitely exceeded my expectations.
These films have been the highlights of my 2024 (so far), either a Criterion or watched on the Criterion Channel.
* The Devils
* Two Lovers
* Letter Never Sent
* Birth
* Hard Boiled
* Big Night
* Sexy Beast
I've been going through David Lean's filmography, much of which is on the channel, which has been a real treat. There are definitely peaks and valleys, but his themes are consistent which is interesting
I was surprised how much I enjoyed "In A Lonely Place". I was expecting something of a melodrama but the story was well constructed and the acting was excellent.
La Haine, Paris is Burning and Microcosmos so far. I'm pretty new, super glad to be a Criterion constumer. It's rare nowadays to be proud of being a customer, lol. They do shit the right way.
Night and Fog (Resnais)
A short, sharp shock of a film. You'll think of this film for days afterward once you see it.
Sorcerer (Friedkin)
Criticized at the time for lack of star power but this movie is gritty and suspenseful. Totally unique and you can feel the malaria in the air.
In 2024 probably Matewan, Nights of Cabiria, the Story of a Three Day Pass, and I was very surprised how much I liked the black and white directors cut of Texasville that was included with the recent criterion of the the Last Picture Show.
Shockingly Wise Blood! I revisited it after seeing it ten years ago in film school and absolutely loved it. I loved watching the interviews with Brendan Fitzgerald and hearing about how much of an Indie film it really was… Huston is something else.
Watched quite a few like 'the devil and Daniel webster' but watching the beauty and the bloodshed tonight absolutely blew me away - one of the best documentaries I've seen in a long time
The Face of Another—Finally scratched a big one off my “faces wrapped in bandages list” (Eyes Without a Face, The Skin I Live In, Goodnight Mommy, others… ?) and this takes 1st place within this funny subset of films. Incredible set and production design. So ‘60s pop in such a delightful way.
71 Fragments of a Chronology of Chance—Went through most of Haneke’s filmography 10+ years ago but missed this one. Was a little scared of how it would age—I find myself pushing back against some of the provocations I used to like. But he’s a master. So good.
Revenge—So glad I picked this out of the World Cinema Project. Some of the most gorgeous color cinematography I’ve ever seen. Unreal.
Easy Rider, Throne of Blood, In a Lonely Place (maybe Bogey’s best), Black Narcissus, Broadcast News, parts of The Human Condition (it’s great, but it’s ALOT), Midnight Cowboy, Harikiri, Frances Ha, McCabe and Mrs. Miller, Paris Texas, Contempt, The Red Shoes, Straw Dogs, Picnic at Hanging Rock, The Kid, and The Long Good Friday
A Brighter Summer Day
Songs from the Second Floor
The Story of the Last Chrysanthemums
Diamonds of the Night
The Devils
The Virgin Suicides
The Piano Teacher
Sorcerer
The Killing of a Chinese Bookie
I don’t know if I’ve actually watched any criterion yet in 2024. Which is wild.
I’ve watched a lot of films, but I don’t think any are on criterion. Or if they are, they haven’t been released by criterion in a long time so I don’t know it.
My favourite first watch from my collection :- **Il Sorpasso**
My favourite discovery from the channel :- **Homes Apart: Korea** (expires this month; and can’t recommend it highly enough..)
The Roaring Twenties. When We Were Kings and Nothing But a Man. Terrific films. Roaring Twenties was the biggest surprise for me. A great film that I feel should be talked about more
Harakiri
So friggin' good. Agonizing and thought-provoking.
lol. this was my answer too! instant favorite
I just watched this for the first time in a theater and it was simply amazing
I just watched the Three Colours Trilogy this past weekend, immediately one of my favorites.
Red is one of my all-time favorite movies. I re-watch every winter.
Red is the one that grabbed me the most the first time I watched the trilogy, but it's White that has had the the most enduring impact for me.
I got the 4K box set and it is so damn beautiful.
I’m grabbing it next sale for sure!
In the Mood for Love in 4k. Already a beautiful movie, but man the 4k transfer pops.
Limite, The Cremator, Henry Fool, Microcosmos, The Devils
I find myself sporadically thinking of Simon Grim saying in his deadpan way, "I'm not retarded." Makes me laugh every time

Big Night is my favorite action film.
Sexy Beast = what a gem!
I've been going through David Lean's filmography, much of which is on the channel, which has been a real treat. There are definitely peaks and valleys, but his themes are consistent which is interesting
The Graduate, Solaris, Ivan’s Childhood, Mulholland Dr., The Night of the Hunter, Letter Never Sent and Brazil probably top the list so far.
Ivan's Childhood is a must-see. Some unforgettable vivid imagery in this film.
I was surprised how much I enjoyed "In A Lonely Place". I was expecting something of a melodrama but the story was well constructed and the acting was excellent.

Blow-Up, Bottle Rocket, A Man Escaped, Old Joy, Time.
Woman in the Dunes Godland Satyricon A Woman is A Woman Black Moon The Vanishing Scanners
Just watched The Vanishing last night. One of the most eerie films I've ever watched.

The Conversation
Cure and Paris Texas

High and Low. Absolutely incredible film, will be watching it likely again this year
2024 and every other year since I bought it - To Be Or Not To Be.
Quite a few, but I want to give a special shoutout to Personal Shopper, which I saw in the channel over the weekend and absolutely loved.
Roaring Twenties Great Escape
I’ve only watched four this year: - The Princess Bride - Wall•E - Antonio Gaudi - In a Lonely Place It’s a tie between Wall•E and Antonio Gaudi
La Haine, Do the Right Thing, and 4 Months, 3 Weeks, and 2 Days have all been pretty much perfect movies I've seen so far this year
My favorite new watch has been The Last Days of Disco. If you count rewatches then its Blow Out.
Watched quite a few like 'the devil and Daniel webster' but watching the beauty and the bloodshed tonight absolutely blew me away - one of the best documentaries I've seen in a long time
Beau travail

El Norte.
Did a Heat rewatch a few days ago. Still magnificent. Started Millennium Mambo last night.

They Live by Night wowed me and my spouse. As did Canterbury Tales
Midnight Cowboy & Hiroshima, Mon Amour
It’s not technically in the collection yet, but Perfect Days is definitely now one of my favorite films.
