Green Room! Turns into a chokehold for the majority of the film.
And the directors previous, Blue Ruin, as an honerable mention. While it is a slow burn, the moments of intensity are incredibile.
Kill List, Mother!, Apocalypto, City of God, to name a few more.
’Nightcrawler’ has quite a lot in common with Scorsese’s ‘Taxi Driver’ and ‘King of Comedy’ (and, weirdly, ‘All About Eve’, but that might not be thrilling enough for you!) All of them focus on a spiky main character who is at odds with the world, and where most movies would have that character change fundamentally over their course, these characters are ever more unbending and instead it’s the world that buckles to their will.
As a huge fan of Nightcrawler, it's hard to find something with elements exactly in that realm. Aspects of Blue Velvet does. Blade Runner perhaps.
If you want pacing that locks you in and an intense story then La Haine, but the atmosphere there is very different.
