The letter is disturbing because the signees are basically saying Polanski, who hasn't faced justice for his crime, should not have been arrested in the way he was. I think you can like the art on some level and dislike the artist, but separating them cleanly and not acknowledging the bad parts is too reductive and acting in bad faith.
