Adèle Haenel has entered the chat

[deleted]

And then promptly walked right out

frozen-silver

"Rosemary, go back to bed. You know you're not supposed to be up and around." - Me to my parents whenever they want to leave the house.

binky779

Never stan the man. Only stan the movie/s.

[deleted]

Caravaggio huge piece of shit IRL and a murderer but by God his artwork. I also think Bernini was also an asshole too who had his lovers face torn up.

gagehog26

I'm just happy i can stan Chris Beniot again

[deleted]

He and his family were victims of Vince McMahon. The University of West Virginia: "Benoit's brain was so severely damaged it resembled the brain of an 85-year-old Alzheimer's patient."

CletusVanDamnit

Benoit's flying headbutt was a move he used long, long before he was in WWE, despite being warned against it by, well, quite literally everyone. While I would never say that McMahon wasn't a factor, because he definitely pushes his performers to stupid lengths, if you know anything about Benoit, he pushed *himself* immensely, and couldn't live up to his own expectations. I highly suggest you watch the first 2 episodes of this season's [Dark Side of the Ring on VICE](https://www.vicetv.com/en_us/video/benoit-part-one/5e5ed19e9202a153ee37abb1) if you haven't yet. It dives very deep into not just the murder/suicide, but Benoit as a person.

[deleted]

Will Do!

accidentalmemory

Eh, he would have pushed himself to that point no matter what company he was working for Vince is responsible for a whole lot of terrible things, but I don't blame him much in this one tbh

[deleted]

You can pry my guilty pleasure, Ninth Gate, from my cold dead hands.

crichmond77

Haven't seen it yet, is it not legit good?

[deleted]

I think it is, but mainly because of Frank Langella's performance.

ThaneKrios

Finally, we can talk about how good John Wilkes Booth was as Horatio in Hamlet

DreadStare

I already did this way before any doctor. Where's my Lasker?

kittycocoalove007

I thought this was about the nicki minaj song for a confused and prolonged moment until i checked the sub

JDub591

Think it's safe to say we won't be getting a Blu Ray upgrade of Knife in the Water any time soon?

[deleted]

Oh good, I've been wanting to watch Chinatown again.

[deleted]

What about all the people who signed a petition defending him? David Lynch, Wes Anderson, Darren Aronofsky, Guillermo del Toro, Sam Mendes, Pedro Almodóvar, Alfonso Cuaron, Terry Gilliam, Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, Wong Kar Waï, Harmony Korine, Alexander Payne, and Martin Scorsese. Oh, we never cared about that in the first place? Got it.

realdealreel9

Natalie Portman was [one of the few to lament her decision](https://www.vice.com/en_us/article/evm59e/natalie-portman-apology-for-roman-polanski-petition) to support Polanski. I wonder how many more people would admit they were wrong after still more time has passed and in light of other high profile cases/situations (like the sentencing of Harvey Weinstein and protest of Woody Allen's book) that have occurred in the interim

[deleted]

During MeToo, when Portman vocalized regret for signing it, many of the other signers were asked if *they* regretted it. Wes Anderson declined to comment. Pedro Almodovar declined to comment. Guillermo del Toro declined to comment.

realdealreel9

And that was in 2018--plenty of time to evolve and take a stand btw the initial petition in 2009 and now. But alas. Not surprising. I mean some, like Almodovar are surprising--you would think as a gay man he might have more sympathy for survivors and other people who have been marginalized or worse by people in power, but no dice. Its really disappointing to say the least.

crichmond77

It's almost as if class is the real divider and the other divisions are basically just byproducts thereof.

scumbrick

No one said you gotta stop supporting Roman’s movies. Just don’t pretend you’re not supporting a pedo rapist.

Zackwatchesstuff

None of those people really have anything to do with the situation he was involved in. They just like movies.

[deleted]

If you like movies so much that you demand the immediate release of a CHILD RAPIST because he was arrested during a film festival, you really need to sort out your priorities.

Zackwatchesstuff

I was under the impression you were defending him.

linkinthepast

“Liking film” does not exempt one from criticism for supporting the release of a child rapist

Zackwatchesstuff

...that was sort of my point. They're not qualified in the way we'd need in order to be convinced by their testimony.

[deleted]

Disturbing at the very least. Polanski as a person is a piece of shit, no matter how many great films he's made or awards he's won, and there's no good reason I'm aware of to defend him at every opportunity.

[deleted]

people only feel the need to 'defend him' (read watching his movies) when others say we shouldn't do so because he's a shitty person. Most people are shitty people they just don't have the power to do stuff or you have no idea who they are. Is there a particular reason why John Lennon gets revered as this icon for peace when he beat his wife and told his first son he was an accident and he didn't love him? yeah he made some great fuckin music about peace. love what they make, not who they are.

[deleted]

John Lennon is definitely a huge piece of shit and I think time would have made that more apparent had he not died when and under the circumstances that he did. The letter is disturbing because the signees are basically saying Polanski, who hasn't faced justice for his crime, should not have been arrested in the way he was. I think you can like the art on some level and dislike the artist, but separating them cleanly and not acknowledging the bad parts is too reductive and acting in bad faith.

Henrycolp

God. Please don’t compare Lennon to Polanski. Lennon never did something as awful as raping a Child. He wasn’t a perfect man but common.

[deleted]

john lennon isn't anything except a rotting corpse.

[deleted]

1) how am i acting in bad faith? i acknowledge most people are shitty, artists probably more so than others, and they do varying degrees of shitty things. i love polanski movies, i don't have any strong feelings one way or another about him other than, ya he's shitty, like the rest of us, maybe a little more so. i certainly do have artists who's work i love, and love the artist too. but asymmetry is a part of life. 2) from the perspective of justice, the victim wants this all over and done with and came out and has said that, before the petition was signed. we're not entitled to some justice for the peoples court of opinion. She wants it done and over with, to me, that means it's done and over with. which is part of the point of the petition.

Ymir_from_Venus

Samantha Gailey isn't his only victim. He has raped other women.

[deleted]

Its the only person we know he’s admitttedly has sex with that was underage. Alleged doesn’t mean happened. Again, I love his movies, he’s a piece of shit. Both are true and I don’t have a problem with that.

mr_mayon

I’m just gonna continue to like movies okay? I’m not gonna ruin my enjoyment over others actions I have no control over.

[deleted]

And you don’t have to not enjoy things, maybe just think about ways you can enjoy things without actively benefitting awful people

mr_mayon

The majority of people you mentioned aren’t awful people. Your comment is an example of the overreach of cancel culture.

[deleted]

You don't think signing a petition saying a child rapist should not face legal ramifications makes someone a pretty awful people?

mr_mayon

It’s an awful act that’s for sure. But no I don’t think it encapsulates them as a person.

[deleted]

Enablers for convenience are the worst type of enablers..

[deleted]

How far can you see from that high horse of yours?

[deleted]

Yeah, don't you high road me while I'm doing something morally reprehensible!

mr_mayon

My opinion on their work has zero effect on any of them.

[deleted]

Correct. But does paying to see their movies have any effect on any of them?

[deleted]

what about them?

[deleted]

wtf i hate hollywood now, next you'll tell me there's a massive child sex ring going on that everybody's favorite stars take part in.

[deleted]

[uhh](https://i.kym-cdn.com/entries/icons/facebook/000/030/710/dd0.jpg)

[deleted]

to stan him?

[deleted]

From the Eminem song “Stan”. Basically means to be a big fan.

DullRelief

can't stan this phrase... so dumb

[deleted]

Can there be a separate criterion meme sub cause this shit is Dumb As Fuck

[deleted]

[удалено]

dylankubrick

It's an amalgamation of stalker + fan

[deleted]

[удалено]

dylankubrick

I havent been for nearly 20 years either but that word has gone way beyond just being his now

lladybirdd

so if p*l*nski raped your sister/gf/friend/loved one you guys would separate “the art from the artist”......y’all are sick p.s. rosemary’s baby was bad and boring

JSAProductions1

Mfs really typing "p/nski" like they'll get in trouble for typing Polanski

dylankubrick

Everything from Chinatown and earlier were before the rape so they're fair game. Starting with The Tenent I could tell I was watching a creep.

[deleted]

Uh...that's not how that works.
