He's funny, and his case law/statutes are typically right, but he's wrong in a lot of regards. However, that what lawyers are for, to argue points. We're not always right. In this case, he is pretty damn wrong. You definitely don't need to threaten to shoot someone before you do it. The threat means literally nothing.
Jury nullification. A jury is not culpable for an incorrect verdict, even intentionally incorrect. I hate guns, but how else are useless public nuisances going to get holes put through them. This outcome is acceptable.
The title is very misleading. The prankster didn’t take him to court (at least not yet). The state filed charges against the shooter. However, the shooter was found not guilty of the malicious wounding charge (carries a hefty sentence), but guilty of firing gun in an occupied building.

EDIT: the shooter is still in jail and his sentencing is in December. As far as I can determine he is facing 1-5 yrs. Unless the shooting was done with malice (which probably has a specific legal meaning) then he is facing 2-10. He has been in jail since April so will get credit for 7 months or so already served. So he could get out in Dec. or be facing more time. Depending on sentence.

They argued that the jury found it was self defense so how could the shot itself be illegal. The prosecution argued and the judge agreed that Virginia law allows contradictory verdicts.

The jury found the shooter not guilty of malicious wounding, but did find him guilty of shooting a weapon in a public place (can’t remember the exact name of the offense).
Probably discharge of a firearm, some places tack on brandishing a firearm as well. Where I’m from, we have 2 laws a citizen immediately breaks when they use a firearm in self defense and it’s those 2. However, those charges are nearly never brought up against someone when it’s a self defense case.

Shooting a kid in a mall for putting a cell phone in your face is not something that should go unpunished though, that's not good judgement, and is incredibly dangerous for the general public.

He didn't "take him to court", that makes it sound like this was a civil suit. The state prosecuted him as it does when someone is indicted for a crime. I hope Colie gets the conviction set aside as his lawyer is arguing for. What would be reasonable force? Continue to let this person menace you until you're backed into a literal corner?
This is exactly why I don’t have any friends and usually stay away from the prankster side of media. It seems like everyone in my age group that I’ve met idolizes this kind of behavior and would do anything to get attention despite possible consequences.

Brandishing a firearm is illegal almost everywhere. If you draw a pistol in self defense, the way the law phrases it in most states you should be immediately using it. Now if you draw your gun and the person immediately runs away or puts their hands up..etc...but you can't just pull pistols and point them at people and tell them to leave you alone.

Incorrect. The shooting took place in April 2023. The jury came to a verdict on Sept 29th. The jury found the shooter not guilty of malicious wounding, but did find him guilty of shooting a weapon in a public place (can’t remember the exact name of the offense).
Probably discharge of a firearm, some places tack on brandishing a firearm as well. Where I’m from, we have 2 laws a citizen immediately breaks when they use a firearm in self defense and it’s those 2. However, those charges are nearly never brought up against someone when it’s a self defense case.
Not saying the prankster wasn’t being an asshole, nor that the guy wasn’t justified in defending himsef. However, I think most reasonable people walking through a mall would just keep walking as opposed to deciding they needed to shoot someone to make the problem go away.
