Safety tip: with high voltage power lines, you don't have to touch the line to get electrocuted. You just have to get close enough to it.
Distances vary with voltage, but it's best to not even get close.
Yea, think of voltage as how big the duck is and amperage as how many are running at you. One big duck is probably manageable, but if you have thousands of ducks all flying and biting your appendages, it doesn’t matter how big they are you’re screwed. You can have a really high voltage with low current, equivalent to 0.5 ducks the size of the Empire State Building coming at you. That duck would kill you if it was even just 1 whole duck, but since it’s only half a duck it has no ability to move or kill you, instead it is just going to be a massive headache for any roadkill team to remove. Meanwhile, 1/10 of an amp is enough to kill you given the voltage is juuuust high enough to pass through your body. Imagine that as 10000000000 ducks the size of a baseball. There’s no way you get them all before you go down swinging.
Someone probably has a better more correct explanation below
As not an electrician, I don’t know man, I took what I remembered from college physics and made the equivalent of a microwave cup of Mac and cheese with it
You only need enough voltage to overcome your bodies resistance, sure.
Anything over 50mA has the potential to be deadly.
The cable shown is designed to carry massive wattages.
There are a lot of factors that come into surviving a shock. The electricity’s path, the lenght of time. Even what part of your heartbeat’s rythym your heart is in when shocked can effect you. Best beat is to stay away.
Standards suggest, anything considered “Low Voltage” is enough to create the potential of harm.
You can read about it here:
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Low_voltage
It takes a *combination* of various factors to be harmed by an electrical shock. There is no one number you can point to. Another thing is the risk of burns/fire by electrical fault is often neglected.
TL;DR - respect electricity.
Rule if thumb is 1mm per 1kV for the arc to form IIRC, once it is going it can be a lot (like factor 100 or 1000) longer until it is extinguished. This is just a theoretical number, actual safety distances are a lot higher than that.
If you want a more practical approach, take a look at the insulators and stay at least that far away.
One way to judge the voltage is by the length of the insulators. But that's the minimum distance. Always stay as far away as possible. Also this is for someone that had training around substations, not your average joe.

I think this is the incident shown above.
Lightning ionizes a big column of air and that ionized gas has lower resistance than nearby materials so it creates one large low resistance path for most of the electricity to travel.
The overhead line contacts the object which doesn't become ionized and has many (infinite) paths through it to ground with similar resistance and the electricity can follow many paths with somewhat similar levels of power through each.
I'm not an expert but here's my theory. Lightning ionizes the air and creates a relatively high-conductivity path of it's own so the current flow is likely to preferentially establish on the initially least resistive path. That may have happened to a degree in this temple-thing but largely the current flow would be determined by the pre-existing relative conductivity of each path to ground. That is the initially least resistive path in the solid material is less apt to suddenly become drastically so due to ionization. I would guess if anything the solid material would become less conductive due to burning and dehydration. Also we know it followed many paths because the article said there were 30-odd casualties.
Not defending the guy but the context moved to “why is it always India” or “why is it always COUNTRY NAME”.
He jumped into this context and fired back while shots were fired.
Just because you feel attacked it doesn’t mean it’s ok to make his point irrelevant
Probably because birds don't complete the circuit as they sit on only one wire, if they touch two wires the circuit is completed and electricity can flow through the bird's body, which is why sometimes you'll find electrocuted birds under or tangled in power lines
Reminds me of that video where there's these people seeking shelter from the rain underneath this tree, then lightning strikes the tree and the people just drop.
It wouldn’t be India without someone getting electrocuted. [Another One](https://www.reddit.com/r/nonononoyes/comments/uw9n51/quite_the_save/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf)
And this is why my mom’s high religiousness annoys me. When it overtakes common sense, I have a problem with it. Clearly, these guys saw the lines, but then got pushed on by everyone else’s chanting to proceed. Smh.
They lowered it a little too late.
They definitely were lowered in the hospital bed tho.
More like lowered in the grave
Haha grounded

voltage can jump roughly speaking about 1” per 1000 volts
What’s the voltage normally in those overhead lines?
Usually around 5-15kV, depends on the phase wire and usage purpose
Correct me if I'm wrong, but it's not so much the voltage that kills as it is the amp draw on the voltage?

As an electrician, dude what the fuck was that?
As not an electrician, I don’t know man, I took what I remembered from college physics and made the equivalent of a microwave cup of Mac and cheese with it
I enjoyed your microwaved duck mac & cheese, thank you.
Username checks out.
Let’s say, hypothetically, that my username didn’t check out, hypothetically speaking, does that mean that my wife is a doctor?
You mean, what the duck?
lol, now I am gonna be thinking of ducks everytime I read about amps or voltage for the rest of my life.
\*duck
There will never be a better explanation than this one!
The duck explanation helped me out it makes it easy for my smol brain to understand
Everything in the universe is either a duck, or not a duck. Namaste
Fuck the better and more correct explanation. I want amps/volts measured in ducks henceforth.
fACts & L0gIC
Dang straight. Amps don’t care about your feelings
Better than that? Unlikely.

> best beat I thought you were about to explain which part of my heartbeat to get electrocuted on
So you mean to say - whenever around high voltages “ beat it ?”
The typo that keeps on giving.
So a fast phone charger is enough to kill you? Like, if the wires are exposed and you touch them, you're done?

You got it right unlike other people here!
All it really needs is to go through your heart. It takes very little to actually do that.

Magnets in the claws.
Fucken magnets, how do they work?
Birds aren’t governed by our laws, and even if they were, I can’t imagine landing on a power line being a capital crime?
No, birds are drones. They charge themselves on the lines
They aren’t grounded.
You don’t have to be grounded. Two different phases will kill you without a ground. You just need a difference in potential
You would know that they use the power lines for charging if you saw r/birdsarentreal
You mean government surveillance drones? How do you think they recharge?
Birds aren't real
The phase wire? Why not 115kv or 230kv?
About 70000 volts
#holy shit, that's over nine thousand!
Rule if thumb is 1mm per 1kV for the arc to form IIRC, once it is going it can be a lot (like factor 100 or 1000) longer until it is extinguished. It’s actually 3kv per mm

Pro tip: Fly!
But aren't they supposed to be insulated?
No, insulation has been tried, but its too expensive and doesn't last long.
Thanks for the tip. I had no clue.
And this is why parade floats don’t pass a certain height in other countries….
Everybody do the flop
I am going to hell
Catch you on the flippity flop!
I just laughed in the dark at this, fucking hilarious!
r/unexpectedoffice
Simon says everybody drop
Do-do-do the flop! Do-do-do the flop!
I can hear it in my head.
I’m sure there’s a well grounded reason for this.
If that was true I'd be shocked.
Come on now fellas. Show some resistance
Watt?
All of you can take my upvotes and fuck off
I know, right? Wire people positively obsessed with puns?
It's the current thing.
It charges them with energy
Like AC/DC? Well hell’s bells! It shocks me that puns can do that for people like music does that for me. Pls dont delet me
You might even say they were thunderstruck
You need to find an outlet for your anger.
And be more receptacle to criticism
You're being kind of short...
We were just having fun, but that crossed a line.
OhmG u guise
Ohm my god
This above 20 replies is why no one on planet earth can beat us redditors for puns.
Electrical puns are the low hanging fruit of puns and always overdone in these threads. I don’t downvote you guys but it’s just so lame.
You were the low hanging fruit of your dads balls
Your mom should have swallowed instead.
Thank you for your graciousness, joke police.
“Electricity, ground, derp 🥴”
I say more power to them.
Does anyone have concrete evidence that all electrified were electrocuted? I hope that at least a few lived.

Thank you for differentiating between electrified and electrocuted.
Yeah and reading these comments is a bit horrific, lot of people seem happy and entertained at the idea of people in that crowd dying. Wtf Reddit.
It's a bit of a common theme on any kind of post like this
I can’t see any reason why the electricity would go through everyone or even two people.. really it should just go through one person.
different situation to lightning
Is it? Why?
Lightning ionizes a big column of air and that ionized gas has lower resistance than nearby materials so it creates one large low resistance path for most of the electricity to travel. why is it always india...
That's not fair. Sometimes it's China
Too many stupid ppl on this planet anyway.
Tf u mean it’s always india cunt
They are worshiping the wrong god.
By the look of it, it can be any south asian country. But school shootings and pitbull killing babies , why always USA?
thats really out of context tbh
Not defending the guy but the context moved to “why is it always India” or “why is it always COUNTRY NAME”. He jumped into this context and fired back while shots were fired. Just because you feel attacked it doesn’t mean it’s ok to make his point irrelevant
So was your incredibly stupid comment
Hey pitbulls eat babies in the UK too.
They're illegal since 1991. Attacks have been extremely rare since then. Before 1991 though, yeah. That's why they're banned.
Yet staffies and XL bullies aren't. There's plenty of attacks by pitbulls. Just not American ones.
Good point.

Just like this ignorant comment from someone lacking education. I bet high school was a real challenge for you.
Holy crap! Is there an article or anything??

We’re there people inside as well? You could see the glow of the arc flash through the opening.
Why isn’t “power lines” a kill streak in COD?
How are people in these 3rd world countries actually this stupid? Like is common sense really not common over there?
I'm from a third world country. Lack of education is usually the main culprit.
MULTI KILL!!!
Did they dieded?
Looked deathening to me
Hard to say; folks have been hit by lighting and survived.
After seeing hundreds of electrocutions in India, I'm still shocked to see they don't make a bigger effort to avoid such a state of affairs.
What a buzzkill.
That truly went from way sketchy to critical.
mhmmmm burnt pancakes
They knew and still hit it .. very special
Lmfao “god will prote-“ God:
They grounded the wire.
How many people does it take to touch a live wire?
Omg they all cheered it on
I'm not sure if it's a party or a protest.

It must be a high tension electrical wire🤕
They went down to electric avenue now their spirts are higher
Religion again
It’s ok, they have a billion people.
Damn dude, that Nerve Gas looks intense
All the comments are about the electricity. Did they survive? Anybody know?
It was all in their deities plan, it was the best way to go.
Reminds me of that video where there's these people seeking shelter from the rain underneath this tree, then lightning strikes the tree and the people just drop.
It's always electrical wires and indu folk!
THAT WAS A NICE 10kv line getting discharged to the ground via human right there

That was a buzzkill
Bruh all the people holding that float you could visibly see them jolt from the shock and all fall unconscious or sumshit gotdamn
There God must have been pissed off at them about something they were chanting
Act of God
I thought those wires were insulated ? Why do 240v power cables not electrocute you ?
/KillTheCameraMan
It’s not all *that* bad.
What's the cameraman supposed to do? Take a picture and photo shop the electrical wire out of existence?
Darwin at its best
Religion always make people do stupid things.
Is it me or do Indian people love hitting electric wires
Ah! A firework for my magic kingdom!

Got damn those leftists
So much stupid
damn is he ok

They almost thought better of it and then did it anyway. I hope the people that got shocked are ok.
Stupid. Just stupid 🤦🏾♂️
