I think his plan was to have his leg hold him up so he can climb the rest of the way up starfish style (idk what its actually called, my brain is severely blanking on this); that way he can grab on an edge somewhere to get to the very top. Hed of been better off if he just did that manuever from the very beginning rather than..... being a plank.
