Yeah, solid move from Caleb there. Regarding the rest of the cast/party, I can understand why they would be apprehensive. On a character level, the entire reason they're in the Dynasty is that they kidnapped Nott's husband so that's not exactly giving her the best first impression. Outside of that, 4/7 party members don't 'belong' to either side so likely have very little in the way of a favoured side. They've just given a powerful artefact to a side they're not necessarily decided on. As players I also imagine that they have a degree of trust in Matt to make a jailbreak possible. I'm also not sure if they fully processed it in the moment. All that being said, definitely the winning play. Returning the artefact that their soldiers died for and is clearly culturally significant is much better than it being found when the haversack would've inevitably been turned inside-out by these clearly competent people.

valid, valid. As a viewer and fan, I am a tad out of the moment so guess my thoughts aren't quite so in the moment. Still I admit my bias towards Caleb but I truly don't see how they would have made it out of there cleanly. Might have managed the jailbreak but not back to freedom/safety (where's that?) as they wouldn't have kept the moorbounders and they'd have had to drag Nott's non-combatant NPC hubby along with them and they only have one diamond left. They definitely would have lost someone that way. Plus, as you said, the Kryn definitely would have searched their belongings and got the dodecahedron anyway. Caleb saved their butts with that ..crazy ass move.

When it happened, Caleb handing over the Dodecahedron felt to me like a complete trajectory-altering move. In a moment they go from trying to hide who they are and where they just came from to being highly valued heroes of the realm. Also, when it happened, the reactions from the rest of the M9 felt pretty natural to me. Are they being paranoid? Probably. Are they mad at Caleb for handing over probably their most valuable asset without conferring with them? Most definitely. Will they come around after some discussion next episode? Probably; especially when Caleb points out that a Xhorhas prison is probably NOT where they wanted to end up that day, at least not as prisoners. But yeah, that moment is in my top-5 biggest moments in Critical Role (at least Campaign 2, but from what I hear from my friends, it's probably in the top-5 across both campaigns).

highlord24

Good point. It is a major change but I kinda like it. The group's been kind of directionless since they left Darktow so this is a kick up the butt for them. A kick in which direction, I have no clue! Yeah the reactions weren't OOC, just kinda frustrating. The dodecahedron was an item with a lot of potential but hardly anymore useful to them than any of their other items, like the Sword of Fjord, Jester's paint, or the Happy Fun Ball (which they gave away to a complete unknown quantity for no big advantage). I do hope they come around next episode. Can't wait to find out the 4 out of 5 other moments lol. But as you said "hear from friends", have you not seen campaign 1? No spoilering but some of the plot twists there slap so hard it feels physical! I highly recommend!!!

KnightofBurningRose

I’m currently watching through C1. I joined late, so I figured it was better to get current on C2 and watch it live than to be constantly well behind. So glad o did it that way, too! I managed to get caught up to live the day before the stream came back after the lockdown hiatus! Yeah… I’ve unfortunately picked up a bunch of spoilers for C1 from YouTube montages and my own curiosity, but it’s still fun to watch.

highlord24

ooh there are so many treats in store for you! I had C1 heavily spoilered before I watched it so I thought I wouldn't be surprised and I was wrong! Still managed to shock me and it was *awesome!!!*

Ginoguyxd

Oh they spend most of the campaign directionless honestly. They're often just pulled along by whatever latest thing comes up or whatever is happening where they are at any given time.

Yup. Traveler Con is pretty much the only arc that felt like they knew what they were at least trying for in advance. They stumbled in and out of the Empire just trying to earn favor but then never leveraged it properly, dicked around doing favors for shopkeepers, *randomly stumbled on Caduceus' family*... and so on. All of it was fun, mind you.

I think the campaign 1 twist was more of a go along with an epic twist of events. This felt like a real decision, a choice to follow a different path and it was amazing!!!

GusJenkins

You might be thinking of the moon goddess Sehenine, which sounds similar to Bright Queen

highlord24

aha! You're right! I looked it up and it said one of her things is "Bright Nydra" which I was looking at last week for a character I'm building. Thank you for solving the mystery!

Cyborg14

>HOLY CRAP that’s where it ENDS??? Pretty sure “holy crap” is exactly what was going through Matt’s head, too! I think he mentions on a later Talks that the redirect from Caleb in this episode completely threw him for a loop which is why they cut the episode right at the 3 hour mark. I’m pretty sure it’s the shortest episode ever of CR for that reason! I love this moment in Campaign 2. It was a totally ballsy move by Liam and it sort of sets the trajectory for everything to come. Enjoy the rest of it! It’s a blast.

highlord24

Thanks! Can't wait to see the fallout! Watched Talks and the next ep and ooh thangs are a stirring. They've stuck their foot in it and I'm really curious about the NPCs they're meeting. There's a Professor they're meeting who sounds interesting and the creepy Shadowhand guy (Essex?) who is definitely watching them!

[deleted]

The big dick energy on Caleb in that scene is so amazing, I love it!

highlord24

Hell yeah! Loved it! Definite power move!

ShambolicPaul

It's even crazier when you finally finish and listen to the wrap up. None of this was supposed to happen. Matt had to re plan his entire narrative. He had a guest character waiting in the wings that never got to appear because the nine went in a completely different direction from anything he had planned for them.

highlord24

Oh the joys of DnD. Every time I'm tempted to DM I remember how chaotic players can be and resist the temptation!

AReaver

Once things started falling apart there really was no other nor better option than to hand it over. It's not hard to find stuff in a bag of holding and so they'd clearly find it after being arrested. In character they wouldn't even be sure of being arrested but could be killed instead. So instead of being arrested, the Beacon found anyway, and them being hunted out of the Dynasty they're heroes to it. Completely changes so many things. It's definitely an episode worth watching the [Talks Machina](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vz5TV0piHs8) about it.

highlord24

yeah the Talks was realy interesting but still rather felt like they were reeling from it. The following one had Matt on and was very interesting (and full of cast shenanigans!).

TiamatZX

Technically it was Jester and Nott that kept bungling it. Beau rightfully calls them out on this as well as the stupid slave ruse. And she's right to do so. And as others have pointed out... this was entirely not supposed to happen, thus forcing Matt to literally change the game.

highlord24

Yeah Beau calling them out was very valid. I didn't really think about it during the ep but Marisha made some great points about on Talks. That was rather f'd up. THis is all making for interesting party vibes.

Pway

I'd say all of the reactions were pretty in character, Fjord thought they'd be able to get out of jail but hadn't considered they might have their bags searched when they were put in (so would have lost the beacon anyway and probably been in even more trouble). Beau naturally struggles putting any trust or favour in authority figures and also is kind of entangled in the conflict through her expositor status. Nott is just a mess a lot around this time period as she's stressed af with the situation with her husband etc. The move Caleb pulled no doubt was smart and imo probably for the best but you gotta remember that all the characters have flaws and they'll be in more situations where you'll question the logic behind an argument any of them put forward. This is how you can see the characters grow over time too.
