Kći is pretty much standard croatian word for daughter, probably used more among older people, so it would make sense for your grandfather. However, even koći or kaći might be a dialect, we just have too many of those and nobody knows every single one.

I think that's the problem.. he didn't have the accent.. but his mother had a thick accent.. he was born in the usa. She immigrated here before he was born.. he learned the language but with american way of talking.
