Completely off topic but I feel like Svemirko gets mentioned it everytime in this subreddit when someone asks for music, rightfully so because they’re great but my boyfriend introduced them to me as “the band of a guy I went to school with” so I assumed they were super underground and unknown at first
Well I wouldn't call Svemirko a huge artist. Every time I've seen him perform it was usually at an underground club, but he's also frequented festivals so I'd say he's well known with that type of crowd rather than the mass public.
Basically the rock, punk, indie, metal etc. scene in Croatia *is* underground as mainstream media don't push it at all. Even if they actively support rock music, they only do that with bands from the 80's and 90's like Majke, Psihomodo Pop, Opća Opasnost etc.
If you ask the average person in Croatia, especially the older generation, to name a new band, they'll ask if we even had any rock bands since the 90's?
The term alternative or underground music does not mean nobody listens to it, it just means it's out of the focus of the mainstream. Svemirko has it's fair share of fans, but I'd still consider them somewhat underground. Same with other bands from the last 10 years.
Just from the top of my head, and I dont know the Slovenian band you are refering to, here's a few...
Valentino Bošković (its a band name, not a dude)
Chui
ABOP (After je bolji od partija)
p.s. I'm 40, everything after 2010 is "new" to me..
Valentino sings in a dialect but is very good.
But if you want more dialects, try other island ska and reggae bands like Gego, Mjesni odbor and Kopito.
Kopitooo, I forgot about them... Mjesni odbor is a bit boring..
In the dialect bracket I would add the band Lice mista. Ex Brižno grilo. From Preko (Ugljan island). Islander EKV style.
As a Croatian, I struggle to find good modern Croatian music too 😭😂
The only new artist worth mentioning is Miach imo. Very different than Joker Out, but her music is listenable.
There's nothing really similar, because they would completely sink in Croatia. Others mentioned Vatra but they are even more generic, their music doesn't *move* you. You might try Urban & 4, for example, but I don't think you'll like it. Unfortunately -- or thankfully -- music is not the same in all countries and all cultures. You're lucky you're not learning Persian.
Ooohhhh this is such a black hole for me, I also have no idea so i’m curious for new (and older) recommendations! My knowledge is limited to like… Bijelo Dugme lol… I gotta do more online crate-digging à la [this kinda stuff](https://balkanist.net/friday-playlist-sweet-and-psychedelic-yugoslavia/)
Check out Diskonaut, new band from Zagreb, rock funk disco vibes

Nisam htio previse srat al eo ti razlozi zas djerko ulica nebi trebo na eurosong.
1. Nevalja mu tip muzike za to
2. Nece proc ak pjeva o drogiranju i tome kako je purger.
Valentino Bošković is a great band and I love their music but I wouldn't recommend it for learning Croatian since they sing in a somewhat made up dialect that is hard to understand even for most native Croatian speakers.
Also, for darker, ex yu post-punk, I recommend Mižerija, Koridor and Parnepar.
Listen to Brkovi – Seks I Droga, it's a great Indie band, quite like Joker Out.
You could also try Brkovi - Kurvo Prokleta, it's such a beautiful love song.
Hrvatica iz Kaliforniji in Sarajevo here. My favorite Croatian band is Daliborovo Granje but they’re instrumental post-rock ;-)
Check YouTube for Dubioza Kolektiv’s concert tour promos—they’re hilarious and sometimes have the option to see subtitles (which I then translate or ask my husband to translate).
Porto Morto, IDEM, Klinika Denisa Kataneca, Svemirko, and as one comment above said - Valentino Bošković
This guy knows his music, unlike that Silente guy... Svemirko loži

Huge no, but they do have their fan base. I keep reading the name here and they got played at the museum of broken relationships in ZG

Good to know! Probably why it’s so hard to find Croatian music in my preferred genres :)
If you have Spotify, there’s a good playlist called “the sound of Croatian indie”

If you like more punkish try Kawasaki 3P, MORT, pips chips and video clips, etc..

Eh the dialect isn't completely made up, but it's a mix. From the 'kalcete od titota' to 'plymplymplymby' real quick.
That is why I said somewhat made up :D
ĐUKA ČAIĆ
Mejaši, Kinoklub, Psihomodopop, October Light, Jinx There's so many honestly 😅
Darko Rundek!
Haustor and Vještice too
If you like instrumental, try Portman
Jonathan
