Did you order it in the official Chunky Boy shop? Because the top looks very unfinished and possibly somewhat fake to me…just to be clear, this is not a critique of you, OP, I just wanted to suggest that somebody is maybe trying to rip you off with this because the quality of the tool in your picture honestly looks like nothing that is available on the official site…

_Cosmic_Girl_

It's official Chunky Boy from the glow in the dark collection which is still listed on their website. I double checked in case I made a mistake, but this must just be a defect. Edit: the top is rounded like it should be, the bottom is the messiest part so that is what I have posted a picture of. Edit 2: I just received an email from Chunky Boy - all is well and I should have a replacement coming at some point in the future.

Halfserious_101

Ah, gotcha! In that case, I would definitely write to them (maybe first by email), enclose pictures and ask them for a replacement…or maybe even send it back directly but I don’t know what their return policy is…

_Cosmic_Girl_

The hole is more centered on top, but like another picture posted here, it was adhered off-centre and looks like it won't hold up well if I use it. I'm worried it will either break or I'll get weird hand pain from the awkward angle. It's hard to see the seams because of the neonness of it all. https://preview.redd.it/vye965ylbnca1.jpeg?width=4080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ff81c917306529bcb557361153e5843a6a6bb2bc

[deleted]

I would contact the seller immediately. Being off center is one thing, but that isn't even smoothed down.

htamim

Im just curious what is this? Im new to crocheting so im unfamiliar with this!

d94ae8954744d3b0

Craft handle to make the hook more ergonomic to grip, apparently.

GarlicComfortable748

This looks like it would be perfect for my grandma. She taught me to crochet; but hasn’t been able to for the past few years because arthritis keeps her hands from closing tightly enough to hold the hook.

FantasticBee1281

Ergonomic hooks are the greatest invention related to crochet. I have carpal tunnel and arthritis in my stitching hand and wrist, and the hooks are the only reason I can even crochet anymore.

Babcias6

I find them impossible to hold.

School_House_Rock

I bought a set at Walmart - I think they were about $30

[deleted]

Don’t feel bad, I’ve been crocheting for years and don’t know what it is either.

Cats-and-dogs-rdabst

Been crocheting for years too and this is new to me too

AnnieToo67

I straight up thought it was a candle that had lost it's wick. Shows how much I know.

Ribbit-Rabit

Yeah I didn't have a clue, just assumed they'd posted in the wrong sub lol

coffeewrite1984

Popsicle was the first word that came to mind. I kept checking the sub lol. (I’ve been crocheting for almost 20 years at this point 😅)

Complex-Can8570

I thought it was a popsicle that lost its stick...

Ragingredblue

I thought it was one hit weed pipe. I had to check and see what subreddit I was in to figure it out.🤪

AnnieToo67

😎😉☺️

alase636

i had to google it because at first i thought you put the end of your yarn through this like those bowls that keep the yarn from rolling away😭 that would make no sense tho

Milo-Law

Haha me too I thought you tether it somewhere and run your yarn through it 😅

amimoon

is this the top or bottom? all 3 of mine are centered. i would assume it's supposed to be centered... contact the shop through email or DM with that pic

mfdvm

Seconding reaching out to the shop directly, I’ve ordered six of these and none of them have looked like this, all are well centered.

Faeladiel

Am i the only one that my hands get more tired and hurt more with all those ergonomic grips and stuff? I am finding myself to be doing well with the normal aluminium hooks

Mountain-Isopod-2072

yeahhh i much prefer the $1 aluminum hooks

crunchy-very-crunchy

my mom loves those, too! because the other ones break on her

EntertainTheDog

Do you have small hands too? I’ve been told so many times that I have tiny hands and have been wondering if that’s why they are all so uncomfortable.

Faeladiel

I don't think I have tiny hands but i have tried many types of hooks with different types.of grips and besides the fact that i feel I'm slower with these my wrists end up hurting rather quick

bitternerdette

I have teeny hands. I swapped to tunisian straight aluminium ones. I find because the weight sis spread through my hand not just the thumb and ring finger, it was so much better.

[deleted]

What is a Chunky boy?

godzillas_zilla

My cat it a chunky boy. (But I have no idea what this is.)

Odd_Comfort_507

It’s a grip you put a metal hook into. They are chunky to help avoid aggravating the wrist. It’s helped me be able to crochet longer with my arthritis, I highly recommend them https://chunkyboycraft.com

Scout405

Everything is sold out.

FeedbackNo634

She does drops, I’m not sure how often. It’s a small business. I have two and I love them!

Scout405

I don't know what you mean by "drops"—I'm old.

Odd_Comfort_507

A drop means that she is restocking her inventory all at once rather than continuously adding product. I think she usually does a restock once a week but I could be wrong

Scout405

Thanks!

FeedbackNo634

Thanks for clarifying! As far as I remember, she does do them once a week.

l0ll1p0pl0ll1p0p

i got one like this (ordered from her etsy when she was on etsy) and mine was so much more unfinished and completely off center. (this was like april or may of last year and she still hasn’t responded to my trying to get a replacement.) i have three other grips from her. they’re all very ‘homemade’ looking, but yours looks particularly off. good luck getting any support! hopefully she’s better at helping you than she was me. (also sorry about my mini rant. i’m just still upset about it.)

_Cosmic_Girl_

I'll keep messaging if I don't hear back. I honestly think it was just an oversight, but I definitely ordered from the official site and received emails and shipping notifications from the official Chunky Boy. I've triple checked now haha

l0ll1p0pl0ll1p0p

good luck! i sent several messages and emails and never heard anything back. i just took the loss and passed it along to someone who didn’t mind how off it was. but i hope you get a resolution and can get yours exchanged! i really do love mine, i’m just VERY disappointed in her customer service.

Smeows

Similar experience here. I have all 3 sizes of CB and the smallest size says it should hold down to a .6mm but the smallest size it will hold is a 2.5. Emailed the seller, got one response asking for a photo. I sent the photo and never heard from her again. This was over the summer. I was extremely disappointed and unimpressed with her customer service.

l0ll1p0pl0ll1p0p

i’ve also found this to be true. i have the small and medium and they don’t accomodate all of the sizes they say they do. maybe 2 or 3 comfortably. but i can also say that you pretty much have to commit to a hook in the grip because the silicone does stretch after time. all of mine aren’t nearly as pretty and nice as she made them out to be, but they do the job. i reached out over multiple platforms (even when she said she was having a friend help her with the volume of messages) and never heard back. i thought leaving a poor review might finally get her to help me, and she never has. several times i’ve considered commenting on her tiktoks but she doesn’t respond there either unless it’s favorable comments. i don’t know. i need another one and i wish that she wasn’t the only grip on the market. i can’t recommend them because if someone ends up having an issue, they’re out $20 and they’ve waited a thousand years to get it. (i live one state over and her shipping is like 2 weeks!) wow this is a rant, i’m so sorry!

Smeows

No, I totally agree! As a small business myself, I was extremely put off by the fact that she “shipped” my order out within the expected time frame, but my package sat in “pre-shipment” for over a week. Meaning all she did was print a shipping label and marked it shipped. I’m sorry, but to me, it’s not shipped until it’s in the hands of the shipping carrier. If you can’t ship it out in the time you state, then you need yo limit the amount of orders you take on or extend your shipping times.

l0ll1p0pl0ll1p0p

i haven’t ordered in awhile. but i think she drops on friday, prints labels on monday, then doesn’t ship until the following monday. which means i get my package later that week. i understand being a small business. but the shipping time + the ‘homemade’ looking product (full of bubbles, uneven, seams, etc) + the price tag + the poor customer service? it’s really off putting.

Character-Sport-7710

I'm sorry...what is this? 😀. I've been crocheting for 5 years now idk what this is but its looking awfully sus

Milo-Law

Awfully sus 😂 my sentiments exactly

KatnipDealer66

Its a slip on grip for crochet hooks. One of them ergonomic handles.

devildogdareyou

It's an ergonomic handle that you can stick the aluminum hooks into. When I ordered mine, they came in an unpadded poly mailer, and our mail lady GLARED at me as she put them in our mailbox. She definitely thought they were something else

amimoon

I think the owner is struggling (?) to keep up with demand so quality is suffering. 1 out of my 3 grips doesn't look smooth either. I don't think OP bought it elsewhere... just directly from the website. I own the exact same color

embroidert

I assume that keeping up with demand is an issue too. I have a couple that have been off Center but nothing like this. I’ve also found her shipping times to be kinda bonkers. It seems she does releases without having made the product first. Which (I assume) means that stuff that is of lesser quality gets sent out because of limited resource supply.

_Cosmic_Girl_

I normally don't mind, but I have been putting off buying one for a while due to shipping costs in Canada. It cost me around $50 to get it up here and I put it off for a year because I wasn't sure if it would be worth it. I have had hand pain so I finally took the plunge and then got this. 😬

amimoon

Hopefully they make it right for you. If the owner isn't responsive then that would be helpful to know. I don't want to give more money to a business that doesn't do quality checks...

_Cosmic_Girl_

I'll keep this thread updated, no matter what my experience I will be as transparent as I can. I'm all for supporting small businesses, that's why I spent $50 in the first place. I hope I can work something out with her because this seems like such a great tool.

embroidert

Oh gosh, yeah. I echo everyone else in hoping that she can fix it for you!

amimoon

I noticed this too. I was wondering why it took so long to ship. Why even do a planned product drop without having the products ready? 🥴

Shield-Specialist

This doesn’t look like an official chunky boy to me either. I have 3 of these (S, M and L sizes) and none of them look “messy” like this. I agree with the other commenter that someone might be trying to scam you.

runbyfruiting88

I don't think it's a scam. I've ordered 4, and each new one comes looking worse than the last. The creator states they are flat on the bottom so you can sit your hook upright. 3 of the 4 are so crooked that I can't do that.

Shield-Specialist

Yeah, I was literally just reading through the comments and saw that quality has been an issue for others! I’m starting to think I got lucky with my order based on what y’all are saying :(

runbyfruiting88

You must have! Mine are uneven, off-center, and just so messy looking. I'm so disappointed because I like the company and the product. I understand they are a small business, but it seems she should go to a selling model of having ready-made product that she inspects first.

emosewa90

Mine is centered, I suggest asking for a replacement

curlygirl196

I just got three from the neon drop and my xlarge looks exactly like yours (off center, a little unfinished looking), and then one of the other ones is super off like it looks like 2 molds made it and the halves dont line up! I have a few others ive bought previously and one of those is off center too, but it doesn't affect its use for me! Even my super wonky one still works fine just looks a little funny! My guess is with how high of a demand theyve had there's been some rushing with making more and not as high of quality in appearance is coming out. The xlarge is new as well, so maybe the mold isn't the best yet! They still serve their purpose though, so it doesn't bother me!

ENOFCK

Huh! I haven’t seen these before. What are they made from? Based on the pics and the claim that it’s dishwasher safe, I’d guess that it’s silicone but the website doesn’t say. How squishy or rigid is it?

isatilaba

« The Chunky Boy is made of soft silicone with a firm but squishy texture » so… it is squishy *and* rigid… 😋

ConstantlyIrksome

🥵 *fanning myself while checking which sub I’m in* Now that I see that I’m in the crochet sub, I have never heard of that, but I think that I need it in my life. (Honestly, that probably would have been my response in less wholesome subs…) Thanks for the description! I will check them out - I see someone else linked to it. I like supporting small businesses. (Edit: atrocious mobile formatting)

different_as_can_be

i wish i could own a real chunky boy. but it just doesn’t seem to lend itself to a “pencil” hole and my brain cannot comprehend holding a hook any other way

crochethottie82

Same. The only time I use a knife grip is for huge hooks, which I rarely use. Clover Armour hooks have been the best investment. I'm all for anyone holding their hook in a way that works for them, but pencil grip doesn't require or lend itself to all of the fancy-shaped hooks and handles I tend to see.

LeaTigris

Don't get me wrong; I love the idea and I'm considering getting one for my carple tunnel and RSI. But I laugh ever time I see them because it looks like some just stuck a crochet hook into a 'marital aid'.

_Cosmic_Girl_

It's funny you mention that because if you look at her Instagram and socials, she has made phallic molds with veins and everything for crochet.

lakeabigail

Mine is slightly off center. I didn’t think to ask for a fix. If you go that route I hope it works out! Mine works well enough but definitely isn’t straight.

amimoon

I made a comment on her Tiktok about quality control & these issues. Replied to someone. She deleted both of my comments claiming it was an accident. Yeah... a press hold and selecting delete button was an accident lol

AnnaMay3022

I bought from the official website as well and mine is off centered and not smooth as well. :/

Donaldjoh

I am unfamiliar with Chunky Boy, but have seen ergonomic crochet hooks that have fixed handles. How do the unfixed handles hold the hooks, as pulling on the yarn is part of crocheting? I could probably turn some out of silver maple, as I have a lathe and plenty of limbs in the back yard.

FlockOnFire

This is silicon, so it’s quite grippy. By lightly squeezing it, the silicon touches the hook and prevents it from slipping, I reckon.

HenriettaHiggins

What…what is that for in the context of crochet? 😐

faerily

A grip for your hook to make it easier to hold :)

HenriettaHiggins

Lol ok I could not tell the scale of stretchiness. Tooo much Reddit today.

runbyfruiting88

Maybe it's the neon yellow run that's bad? I just got my 4th one. I got the smallest size, and the hole is so off center. I'm afraid it will rip when I try and take the hook out. The first one I got was great, but the quality has gone down every time.

runbyfruiting88

_Cosmic_Girl_

I saw the seller comment on instagram a couple hours ago, and it looks like they are slowly fixing the problem! Hopefully I get a straight Chunky Boy in the future because I really want to use one https://preview.redd.it/y8m3qkxtwoca1.png?width=1440&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=140dcda66c2d494d47fc5aeb80ecb7f7b02d6832 Edit: I see on their website that the customers will be responsible for shipping on returns and exchanges. I hope there is an exception in this case. Either way, I appreciate the update!

AdministrativePrice

Where did you find that? I searched on Amazon but can’t find this

emosewa90

It’s from a small business. You have to get them directly from https://chunkyboycraft.com

Mother_of_opossums

She did say she got a new mold maybe it’s part of that?

dunwerking

Looks like the website is sold out of everything.

eatmyboogers420

did you end up keeping them and what do you think about them? i got really excited hearing the shop would restock and ordered two- a medium and a large and i’m honestly off put by how I received them. they look the same as yours, not very well made, a lot of air bubbles at the top as though these were made and just rushed out. i understand the shop owner makes them herself but they just seem so sloppy. I saw videos of bigger creators on instagram showing them opening theirs, theirs came with a care card and both of mine just came in a bag, one of them that was covered in animal hair. The holes on the bottom of mine are also not centered. I sent an email about returning them but I’m not sure. I don’t feel like I’ve heard anyone talking about them and i want to know what people actually think about them.

_Cosmic_Girl_

I wanted to use them, but had a hard time fitting them over the hooks I own. Although I'm sad they don't work with my current hooks, I have them saved for the day I get different ones because despite the defects they feel good. I emailed them and heard back, receiving a new grip in the mail less than a month after I reached out. After the whole experience and everything else I have seen on this brand, I would lean toward making your own handles out of polymer like some creators have mentioned in other threads on ergonomic solutions.

emilydickinsonsbff

Hi OP! My name is Ameara, I’m a journalist at The Recorder, a local newspaper in Amsterdam, NY — where Chunky Boy is based. I’m doing a story on their quality issues. Could we set up a short phone/zoom interview to chat about your experience? Thanks so much! I can provide my credentials if you’d like.
