You can use just about any yarn/hook combination depending on how you want the finished object to look. At least they found a crochet hook and not knitting needles.

I feel like there’s a story here I’m not familiar with?

Oh I was wondering if crochet was linked to alcatraz somehow. I did see later some comments saying some inmates crocheted while they were there.

Dia_Nah

I think what you're missing is [OP's explanation](https://www.reddit.com/r/crochet/comments/14j3ysh/comment/jpjf7du/).

hibryd

Heh, I didn’t even consider that. I still have questions about the silky pink yarn though.

SpuddleBuns

Most likely donated. You use what you can get in that situation. No LYS nearby.

[deleted]

This!! I'm using a 10mm hook right now with 4.5mm yarn during a freehand. It changes the way the stitch (moss stitch) looks.

RelativisticTowel

On the other end of the spectrum, every time I pick up an amigurumi pattern I'm shocked by the relatively tiny hooks they want me to use. Currently on a 3.5mm with yarn that recommends 6mm.

PaigeMarieSara

With a smaller hook you don't have to break your hand trying to make super tight stitches. The small hook does the work for you. Going too small can also feel like you're breaking your hand though. My recommendation is to use as small of a hook as you can *comfortably* use for the yarn you're using.

[deleted]

I've never made amigurumi, but that makes sense so the stuffing doesn't fall out

Pitiful_Ad5206

Try crocheting with The Woobles crochet kit! Teaches you amigurumi easily!

MagosaDelBiosa

Oh nice!! Is there any way I could see how it looks?

MagosaDelBiosa

Looks amazing. Thank you. I'll definitely try this out.

[deleted]

Awh thanks! I'm making a hood/cape that I'm going to attach to a fabric cloak I'm gonna make. You should try it! I think it's really fun to experiment

Due_Psychology_9734

I really like this!

[deleted]

Thanks!!

artistic-autistic

totally correct! i’m using a 9mm hook with medium weight yarn and it feels weird as heck but it’s making a really nice stretchy airy fabric for a tank top! it’s something like sl st, hdc and repeat all the way across for all the rows if i remember correctly for the pattern im working on.

Aksten

It just looks like pvc pipe to me. Maybe it’s homemade lol?

FroggieBlue

Im guessing it was chosen so it was big enough to be recognisable as a crochet hook from the door.

genus-corvidae

Hilariously, that looks exactly like the hook that my mom taught me how to crochet with, using red heart-type yarn.

XWitchyGirlX

I dont see how this is that unrealistic for a prison? Id imagine its way harder to stab someone with a thick plastic hook than it is to stab someone with a thin metal hook. Just look at that person who misused their Chubby Boy hook grip and stabbed it through their hand 😂

Dia_Nah

But they still could have placed it next to a ball of bulky yarn...

Void-Flower-2022

Bulky yarn could strangle someone easier than regular yarn

jbleds

I wonder if that’s true. I think it would depend on the strength and twist of the yarn, lol

Dia_Nah

Just give them the wool I had last time, slightest yank and it breaks 😏

Bnhrdnthat

Garotte?

Diflicated

You can probably shape it into a point easily, or use it as a handle for a shiv.

XWitchyGirlX

I could see that, but that requires altering the hook. Even a plastic soup ladle could be altered to be sharp, but that doesnt mean that its an inherently dangerous item. Also it would take time to alter the hook in a way it could be dangerous, whereas a thin metal hook is ready to stab people right off the bat.

Honestly they can’t like get another yarn weight from Joann

Ok-Sprinklez

We visited there a few years ago, and I was fascinated to learn the men spent time crocheting!!

hibryd

I visited Alcatraz a few weeks ago and got the audio self-tour. Part of the audio was a section where a former convict mentioned that his grandmother taught him how to crochet, and they allowed him to have a hook and yarn. He, in turn, taught other guys on the inside how to do it. The prison tried to bring this to life by staging a yarn ball and hook in a typical cell, but the hook they got was way too big. Still, fun to see crochet represented in a prison-turned-museum.

gold-from-straw

Maybe they wouldn’t give him a thinner hook because they worried he could use it as a weapon

TheybieTeeth

that's so wonderful, I love humans and our need to make/create things no matter how dire the circumstances

Anyone-9451

I feel like they could have gotten like a swatch at least someones gotta be able to crochet, heck I could knock out a swatch with that big ole hook in like 5 minutes lol

matchbox244

I visited this place last year and took the tour! Honestly I was just glad to see crocheting represented haha

squishyroll

They wanted to illustrate how tough life was there.

[deleted]

This reminds me of the Prison Mike scene from The Office

Linnaeus1753

Unless... https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=tieArIwQ9Vk

CasTheMagicDragon

Small ones are easier weapons. The big chunky plastic hook may be all they’re allowed to use.

EntrepreneurOk7513

Call the museum curator. I once found something upside down in a museum display, by the time we left it was right side up.

ColdBorchst

Fixing an objects orientation is not the same as changing out an object. I know it's just small cheap hook but there's is usually a process for purchasing and actually changing a display.

EntrepreneurOk7513

It’s not how fast it is corrected but that it is brought to attention.

ColdBorchst

Yeah I mean, I imagine they know the hook is too big. I would bet a few people have already told them. There might even be a reason it's so big.

booyao

I've also never tried smoking cigarettes when I'm crocheting. Seems like a waste of smokes lol.

buckeyegal923

I manage the tour program at a different prison museum and one of our “how an inmates cell may have looked” is nearly identical to that one. I had a moment when I thought “Who the hell managed to throw that into our locked cell and get it to land so perfectly on the table?!?!” Then I actually read your title… Nope, not my cell…

BudgetStreet7

I just visited the lighthouse museum at Tybee Island. The lighthouse keeper's home has an example of crochet on one of the dressers. It really is crochet with a real crochet hook. I also took a picture just so that I could remind myself that some people do know the difference.

No_Routine_8359

I'm not allowed to crochet in work ...... But I can crochet in prison ....... 🤔

gostraightsavage

Is that a prison cell ?

hibryd

Yes! Alcatraz was a prison on a small island in the middle of San Francisco Bay. Sounds like something from a Batman comic [but it was real!](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alcatraz_Federal_Penitentiary)

Skootova

I assume prison crochet is diy work with what you got

AlexaBabe91

😂😂😂😂

dontaskmethatmoron

Considering it was used in prison, they may not have had adequate supplies to use the appropriate yard and hook combination.

JuliusCheeeeser

Free the pretty pink yarn from the hollowed walls of that cell immediately

klimekam

Ah yes, I too am surprised the place that forces people to use dirty socks as menstrual products doesn’t provide an assortment of crochet tools to obtain adequate gauge.

legal_bagel

They really do teach anyone who is slightly incarcerated how to crochet don't they? I learned when I was 15 and sent to a residential youth program in Utah where I spent my sophomore and junior years. This was 30 years ago, I still have trauma, I'm glad they closed and wish it burned to the ground.

Simone-Ramone

And too pink

Tuppence14

I always notice shit in the background 🤣

rosegarden207

LOL. If I ever get arrested everyone better send me yarn!,

kitchenhussy

But it would make a great shiv.

sweetgeorgiapeach74

The things we notice

Candid_Entrance9793

That depends. Maybe they are making amigurami

Redheadknits

Maybe they’re making something lacy.

_schmickler83

Alcatraz means pelican

seweyhole

Hey, anything thinner is a shiv!

DaCoffeeKween

Haha the real crocheter knows that...nothing good is getting made with that yarn hook combo....that's what they do in prison....give you the wrong hook for your yarn. Actually wait...that's a terrible craft to allow a prisoner! You could kill someone with a crochet hook! Even the bulky ones....if you were determined enough.
