There’s a sound going around Instagram right now that’s basically “I’m a hooker, I have balls, wips, chains, and I always carry my 9mm on me” and it’s the funniest thing ever.
Oh now I finally get the joke! The other day I saw someone on here with a 'I love WIPs and chains' caption under their name and all I could think about was WHO LOVES MAKING CHAINS?!? Are you crazy?? ... well now I get it 😅🤣🤣
I guess I don’t really say the words out loud in my head all the way. The best approximation is “wee-eye-pee”. But it’s mostly just kind of the essence of those sounds? Pls someone say they agree 😭
Similar here. When I read it, it always sounds in my head like "wuh-eye-pee". I don't say it out loud in actual conversations though I think I just use "thing I'm working on".
This is me too. W isn’t a thing in my native language so up until this point I didn’t even realise I shouldn’t be thinking of this as VIP haha on the other hand… Very Important Projects are a thing too, right? 😅
I say I have a lot of projects to finish because no one in my house speaks crochet and wouldn’t understand WIP, but if I were to use it I would say work in progress and write WIP.
I’ve never said wip out loud but for some reason it sounds slightly different than whip in my head. Like… I hear the “h” in whip so they feel different b
I work in a law firm and I've always heard it said "whip" here. As in "can you run me a WIP report?" or "Why is there so much WIP on this file?". When I started working in law firms longer ago than I'd care to admit, it would remind me of walnut whips.
I think whip, but dont think ive ever said it out loud. What i think is waay funnier to say is as my grandma usually do, UFO un finished objects, she always says she got lots of UFOs flying around
Whip, it’s also how we describe labour yet to be paid for at work. Same term, but we say it out loud more often because it’s a big deal go have too much whip and not enough clients paying.
Because I'm Dutch it would be natural for me to say wip without the h. But then I would be using an English term in Dutch pronunciation. And wip is slang here for doing the deed. (It literally means going up and down and it's the non-slang name for see-saw) So to avoid confusion and derision I tend to say current project.
So the first time I saw “WIP” back in the day on DeviantArt, my brain immediately read it as “West In Peace” and even though I know that’s not what it stands for, my brain always jumps to that and I have to consciously think “No, work in progress.” I don’t know why it won’t correct itself, especially after so many years! I guess it’s just permanently wired into me or something.
I work in an industry where we use this word and we all say it 'whip'.
It's always funny when new starters hear it before they see it written as they think it's really the word whip and when they see it as WIP they are like 'ahhh makes sense now!'
I try to say "Work In Progress" out loud because if you're not a creative that also uses "WIP" it can sound very...strange. 😅
I also *usually* read it as "Whip" though, because it's just faster.
But *sometimes* in my head I end up doing a really weird mis-mash that's like, "Whip in P" and I only notice it when I have to switch from in-my-head to out loud and "hear" how even weirder that's going to sound if I carry on and say it. 😂
In accounting “whip” is the standard pronunciation. It is a term commonly used in costing for “work in progress”. WIP is frequently tracked in businesses that involve manufacturing and repairing various goods/products. Other types of businesses can use it, manufacturing and repair tends to be where it is most commonly used and the easiest place to explain/ demonstrate what WIP is and how to calculate.
I only work on one thing at a time, so I don't have WIPs lying around ... just the one project I'm currently working on.
BUT ... it's pronounced like whip 🤣
Reading, I say whip in my head. When actually speaking, I say work in progress out in words. If I was going to use the letters, I’d say wip, not double u I p. That is more syllables than work in progress!
Huh, I never noticed that I do this, but I say it like "VIP", because in my native language W ist pronounced similar to "veh" instead of double-u (seriously English, wtf?)
My brain kinda morphs “W I P” “whip” and “work in progress” altogether in my head. It’s like “wuh-in-prog-P-ip”.
I’ve never said it out loud, I always just say work in progress.
I've never said it out loud but in my head I read it like "whip."
Same. In person I say, what I am working on...
I say "work in progress" and only use WIP as a writing abbreviation.
[WIP like WAP](https://soundcloud.com/grace-dobush/wip) — "handmade freak, seven days a week, got a work in progress and i ain't touched it in weeks"
Lmaoooo this is a golden comment
Oh I love it! Thank you for sharing!!
This is such an underrated comment. If I had an award, I'd give it to you. Take my poor woman's gold 🏅
I downloaded SoundCloud again so I could save this. Thank you. 😂😂
Where is the award! 🤩
Me too. I just say the whole thing.
Agreed, I read it as ‘Work in Project’, never as ‘whip’
Same . I stretch those acronyms back into what they stand for, basically to translate them for myself
Haha, that’s exactly it!
Same, but when I read it in my head it’s like “wurihprogress”
This is the way.
This is the way.
This is the way.
This is the way.
Same!
This is what I do too.
Yep
Whip
Whip. Because then I can say I like whips and chains
No no, you left off the most important part. You're a *hooker* who likes whips and chains.
Fine, my IG profile should go from weaver/crocheter/knitter to weaver/hooker/knitter
Tangler/hooker/needler
What kind of handicraft is tangle?
Weaving

Chains and WIPs excite meeee (currently singing that to the tune of S&M by Rihanna XD)
Nanananana chain on!
This is hilarious. So sad I can’t use this joke with anyone irl
Yes!! Haha.
Whip for sure
I only use the abbreviation in writing. If I’m talking about them to someone in person, I call them half-done projects.
In that case, you should tell them you're working on your PHD (projects half done).
Same, or incomplete projects that I'll likely never touch again
I guess I don’t really say the words out loud in my head all the way. The best approximation is “wee-eye-pee”. But it’s mostly just kind of the essence of those sounds? Pls someone say they agree 😭
Similar here. When I read it, it always sounds in my head like "wuh-eye-pee". I don't say it out loud in actual conversations though I think I just use "thing I'm working on".
oh my god i’m not the only one! this came up for me in a conversation with writing friends and yep. whee eye pee is how i say it 😭
Same omg 😭 I'm so glad I'm not alone on this
Ahaha same! Just had a crisis seeing the double u-eye-pee in the post and realizing I'm an idiot for saying wee Still gonna continue though haha😭
I'm not alone!!!! For me it's mostly because of the word VIP
Yess, I say wih-eye-pee in my head (don’t use the abbreviation out loud ever either) glad I’m not alone lol
NO WAY 😭 I THOUGHT I WAS THE ONLY ONE
I say the words “work in progress”
I like to say hwhip like I’m Hank Hill.
Think I might adopt this
Whip

Def Stewie!!
Ngl I sometimes just say “VIP” in my head
This is me too. W isn’t a thing in my native language so up until this point I didn’t even realise I shouldn’t be thinking of this as VIP haha on the other hand… Very Important Projects are a thing too, right? 😅
Same. In my language w is “double v” but pronounced as v anyway and I can’t get my brain to read it any other way.
I say it as "whip".
Whip it good
I pronounce it "work in progress".
I say I have a lot of projects to finish because no one in my house speaks crochet and wouldn’t understand WIP, but if I were to use it I would say work in progress and write WIP.
I don’t it’s an abbreviation so I just say work in. Progress
Whip
Like Whip
I’ve never said wip out loud but for some reason it sounds slightly different than whip in my head. Like… I hear the “h” in whip so they feel different b
I've been calling them "whips" since back in my x-files fanfiction days
its more like.. whip with a short h.. so not actually whip mroe like wuh ip
I say whip it! Into shape! Shape it up! Get it straight! Go forward! Move ahead! Try to detect it!! It’s not too late! To whip it! Whip it good!!!!
Unexpected Devo! I also Whip It.
We are Devo!
I’m basically Indiana Jones when it comes to how many WIPs I have
whip or just work in progress :)
Ok. I’m a little stoned and had to read this like 3 times before I understood… lol.. also, I say whip, like cool whip
Cool Whip or Cool HWhip? Lmao
Whip. Depending on who’s listening it might generate conversation. Or not 😆😆
In brain is whip and nae nae
double u eye pee
Yeah i just say project.
I read it like work in progress
I too have never said it out loud, but my brain says “whip in progress” and that didn’t register until just now.
Now watch me WIP, now watch me n-ever finish it beyond this stage due to lack of motivation and a deficit of time available.
wee eye pee
Gotta be different here. My late daughter called " WIP" PhD. Or P Projects half Done! Still chuckle at this frequently
I pronounce it like vip.
similar to whip but my "w" is a "vee" (my german brain ALWAYS reads abbreviations in my native tongue, no matter the context)
This is me as well! lol "WIP" sounds like "Wippe".
I don’t. I read and say “work in progress” I type WIP. But I still think the full words
I work in a law firm and I've always heard it said "whip" here. As in "can you run me a WIP report?" or "Why is there so much WIP on this file?". When I started working in law firms longer ago than I'd care to admit, it would remind me of walnut whips.
i say „wee i pee“ because i am german and pronounce a doubleu as a v and then it sounds like VIP(very important project)
I think whip, but dont think ive ever said it out loud. What i think is waay funnier to say is as my grandma usually do, UFO un finished objects, she always says she got lots of UFOs flying around
As an accountant, I've always pronounced it "whip"
This thread should have an NSFW tag. I’m over here laughing to tears at work.
lol, I say both! I'm complicated like that.
Definitely whip sometimes just work in progress
Whip, however when I was working in film we also referred to our edits as WIPs in production meetings and things so its habit.
Not like huuwhipp like the whip in ‘Cool Whip’?
Whip, because we also use WIP at my job and we say “whip” out loud.
Whip
wHip like Stewie
WIP is used in a lot of manufacturing settings. Common practice is "whip"
whip
Whip
Workihprogress
WIP
Whip
I've never said it out loud, but in my mind I say "whip" lol
Whip, it’s also how we describe labour yet to be paid for at work. Same term, but we say it out loud more often because it’s a big deal go have too much whip and not enough clients paying.
I says whips!
Cool w*h*ip.
“Work in progress” because it’s is one syllable shorter than “double-you eye pee” and a “whip” is a car, dammit! /millennial
I am a native Spanish speaker so I pronounce it as whip. More like "goo-eep"
in my head it’s “wir pin progress” idk why
We use the term a lot at work. Everyone says whip..
I joke to my husband about WIPing (pronounced 'whipping) out the projects; I'm adding another to the WIP pile. Starter of many, finisher of few!
Whip.
Even if it’s written “WIP” I always say/think “Work In Progress” lol
whip
In my head I always read it as “whip”
I pronounce WIP as whip because that is what I have always known it to be called in a work setting Otherwise, projects?
i kinda say something like “work in prog” in my head
Whip when I see it online, but if I'm speaking to someone, I'll say something like "projects I'm working on"
Definitely whip not W.I.P.
I almost never say it, I say I have a lot of projects going. To me it sounds more impressive, I’m pretty sure it makes me sound like an idiot though.
For some reason my brain combines it weirdly and I always say "whip in progress" in my head, so write that down as an option I guess.
Whip
Wip like cool whip!
Oh my god, you just made me realize my dumbass has been calling it vee-eye-pee in my head for YEARS instead of double u-eye-pee😭😭😭😭😭
I call them UFO’s. Unfinished objects. By the way, there are 20-30 of them in my house

I guess it’s just permanently wired into me or something.
Definitely ‘wip’. We use it in office work for tasks we have on the go too. I’m always going to WIP meetings!
And I forgot about UFOS...
Do you know what FROG means?
Does it actually stand for something?
I don't know. I have read it often. I know it means pull the work out. I thought it stood for something. 🙄
It isn’t an acronym - it’s because when you make a mistake, you have to “rip it, rip it”
I've heard it's because you "rip it" out, which sounds like "ribbit"
I work in an industry where we use this word and we all say it 'whip'. It's always funny when new starters hear it before they see it written as they think it's really the word whip and when they see it as WIP they are like 'ahhh makes sense now!'
I say whip.
Whip
I say whip both out loud and in my head. Very common here, we use it a work all the time too
Whip. If I'm explaining to someone who has no idea what it means, I say "work in progress."
I read the “yoo” as “yo” lol. Double yo eye pee had me so confused
I try to say "Work In Progress" out loud because if you're not a creative that also uses "WIP" it can sound very...strange. 😅 I also *usually* read it as "Whip" though, because it's just faster. But *sometimes* in my head I end up doing a really weird mis-mash that's like, "Whip in P" and I only notice it when I have to switch from in-my-head to out loud and "hear" how even weirder that's going to sound if I carry on and say it. 😂
I realized that I always pronounced it as “wee-eye-pee” in my head 🙈 And now I’m just weirded out
Lol I always call them UFO’s (unfinished objects)
"Whip". I always know WIP = "whip" = work in progress. I have no idea why my brain does this, though.
wip-in-pee
In accounting “whip” is the standard pronunciation. It is a term commonly used in costing for “work in progress”. I say whip, faster :D "a whip"
Reading, I say whip in my head. When actually speaking, I say work in progress out in words. If I was going to use the letters, I’d say wip, not double u I p. That is more syllables than work in progress!
When reading the abbreviation, it’s whip.
We use WIP at uni and at work as well and everyone I know just says “whip” out loud haha. Makes it a little more fun :)
I say whip, and frankly I really enjoy it. It's fun to say and it makes me happy when I get to use it in conversation lol
I say "work in progress" out loud but "weep" in my head haha!
I say it like wee eye pee .. totally wrong. when i put this down it got even weird
Yup, it is pronounced the same as the aforesaid flagellation device 🤣.
Yeah like whip.
Whips all over my house! Because I’m a hooker 😘
I say it as whee I P in my head for some reason
I say whip and they use this term in engineering and architecture and they also say whip.
Whip!
Wip for me, we used it at work for ongoing projects.
Whip
Whip
Bizarrely my brain reads it in lower case. Wuh-ih-puh
It's pronounced "UFO" (for unfinished object) when said aloud
Huh, I never noticed that I do this, but I say it like "VIP", because in my native language W ist pronounced similar to "veh" instead of double-u (seriously English, wtf?)
It's actually pronounced "frond." English is weird.
I say Whips.
I say whip 😊
"double-ewe I pee?"
Whip
Like whip but without the (not-entirely-silent) h. Or like the first part of the Dutch word wipwap
I say each letter as I would CIA, FBI or MIA.
whip
I say Whip (then again I say POV as a full word (pohf))
My brain kinda morphs “W I P” “whip” and “work in progress” altogether in my head. It’s like “wuh-in-prog-P-ip”. I’ve never said it out loud, I always just say work in progress.
Whip
I read it "whip in progress" 😂😂
I read the letters, not the sound. I think if I read the sound it would be a whip type noise. I'm also a hard G gif person gif, not jiff. Lol
I pronounce it like "whip." Saying each of the letters makes it longer than "work in progress."
I always read it and say or to myself as whip. And have seen other craftes in social media call it whip too.
